Destiny Discussion Thread - Fear The Moon Wizards on September 9th

Not open for further replies.
Got a decent amount of play time this weekend.  360 here so won't be able to join most raids here.

I was nearing the 200 marks cap so bought 3 armor pieces for my Hunter to get it to 25.  Once that happened, I did a lot of bounties and...

Solo'd the weekly strike - non Nightfall of course.  This was only my 2nd time entering a strike, first time doing Nexus.  Apparently once I gained control after the cut scene there were no other players around!  It took a little over an hour.  I eventually was able to get into the high spot near where you jump down.  First time I got up there, I died as I got careless with timing my shield recovery.  Next time I played it safe and wasted ammo and until it regen'd (basically just Rockets and waste until regen) and used Golden Gun.  I think I got a lucky Knife Throw crit as well even though the damage isn't as good as the nades when they stuck.

I then completed several Tiger Strikes.  Only once did I join one mid way...it was the Nexus one - a 3rd or 4th Nexus run I got to the boss and both guys quit (had a guy quit on the moon before boss as well and it was just me until a pair came, left, and another pair came and took a while to kill it with me.

I have yet to do a Mars strike as whenever it was a Mars, I was the only person there and did not want to solo blind again.  Wonder if Mars has a lower chance of loading?

I'm really surprised at how some players are.  I could only have one person stay but the strike go well.  Some strikes (that I completed already) would take much longer when I had 2 other people.  Some people would camp in glitch spots and whittle at the bosses (Winter) which helped a lot.  Another time both guys camped on the mountain ledges (also Winter) and it took over 40 minutes to finish.

I also don't like how on my 2nd/3rd Tiger, me and another guy killed the priest in Winter and a player just joined.  That guy got 2 rewards while we just got one each.  No one got anything good but still.  Also have no idea how many players barely have any precision kills... I had more using an autorifle and shotgun on the moon.

I didn't get anything good from the Tiger strikes - no coins or legendary engrams, just blues including some kiddy animal shader?  I did get a legendary pulse, Bad Seed Down, from the weekly though.  That's my second legendary so far, first was a 77 Wizard Void Fusion from a blue engram.

Alright, it's that time again - what is everyone's availability for raids this coming week?

I will be running Nightfalls & Weeklies with my friend again (should be Mars/Solar this week) on Tues/Wed around 8:30-9 EST so if you see we have a slot open, feel free to shoot us a message.

Monday: let's do the hard mode Oracles/Templar. If we can figure out that right side sniping area to get that one hidden Oracle I think we can knock that out in 20 minutes. I will be on around 5pm Pacific and hopefully Rada5auru5 will be there so we can use his save and I can run my Hunter through instead of my Titan. I figure people have alts to use (or maybe some other people who missed out can join in).

Tuesday: I will check around 5:30-6 Pacific to see if you guys are ready, otherwise I'll try to join gotdott for the weekly stuff. We ran the Raid so efficiently last week so I hope we can knock it out in under an hour this week.

Weds: have to be out from 6:15 - 7:45 Pacific so I can't join an early Raid then. I could do it after like 8 Pacific no problem though.

My Titan can sit out since he's maxed. But I still want to run both my Warlock and Hunter. I had to go with randoms on my Hunter this week and it worked out in the end after one false start that wasted 2 hours. I'll start with my Warlock (who is level 29) on hopefully the Tuesday Raid, then if we do another I'll use my Hunter.

Mondays are always iffy for me, but I'll be on Tuesday and Friday night for sure (around 9:00 EST). It is likely I will also be on either Wed or Thurs.

Did the raid last night for the first time ever. Difficult, but a lot of fun. We had one guy who kept getting disconnected every couple of minutes so effectively we only had five players. The final boss took a bunch of tries; we kept getting close but some of us were still learning the ins and outs and the team couldn't quite pull everything together. Finally did though. :)

Ended up with the Corrective Measure machine gun, Hunter gloves, Chatterwhite, and a metric ton of ascendant materials.

Date night with my wife tonight, so I won't be able to get on until around 10est. When I get home from work I'll see if anyone is on to give the save to.

I'd like to do Nightfall/Weekly-Strike Tuesday, and will raid Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm out of town Th-Sun though, so I'll be MIA.

I have armor ready to be further upgraded, but I've been trying to save materials for raid gear. I guess I should at least upgrade enough to ge to 28 before trying to raid on hard. Would it make more sense to spread out the upgrades or max out one piece?

I would upgrade your helmet first. I don't know if it is 100% confirmed or not, but everything I have read, been told, and seen is that you can only get the raid helm from Atheon on hard. Therefore, your helmet is the piece of gear you will most likely not be replacing anytime soon.

I should be on around 8:30pm Eastern all week. Would like to to nightfall and raid (Normal and Hard run from the oracles) Tuesday. All my top weapons are solar so that should help out.

If you or anyone else are still running strikes tonight let me know. I have 20 more left for Toland's Exotic Bounty.

If
Weeklys (22, 26, 28) count as 2 strikes and Nightfall counts as 3 for that bounty. If you do speed runs (using rockets on the servitors and running by everything else) you can knock out 6+ an hour solo and finish in under 2 hours. I would recommend finishing this tonight as Mars is no fun :p

I think I have burned myself out on this game a bit. I still love it and I still want to keep playing it. But logging on every night for hours is just not able to happen currently anyway. I have had my Warlock at 30 for a while now and it just has lost its appeal once I got pretty much everything there is to get. I have my Hunter at 28 but it just isnt the same somehow. Hell, I only did 1/3 of my normal Raids this week and still have a Weekly to do!

I will keep playing because it is fun but really I wont be as intense as I have been about this game until the DLC comes out haha

That being said if I am on my xbox and you guys need help with anything just shoot me a message and I can maybe pop on for a bit!

Is the Nightfall only open after a certain level, or am I missing it? I am almost to level 24 and have the Daily/Weekly shown on the main orbit map. Then I have the strike playlist, but I don't see any reference to Nightfall.

Nightfall is a level 28 Strike and so with everything you have to be at least 3 levels away to even see it. So here you need to be 25 I believe before it is even an option. Though at 25 there is very little chance you will succeed alone!

You're on X1 right? If you can hit 25 tonight I can run you through so you can get some of that sweet coinsmaterialsloot.

Yea, I was putting it off while hoping to get some more raid gear to level up but I guess I gotta do them now or it will take up one of my bounty spots for another week. I think I still have to buy something from Xur and grind some MP stuff anyways so not like I can finish it anytime soon.

I'd like to put together a run... for Warlocks, Hunters, and Titanfall horde mode (this sucker just bought the season pass)
Hahah I was tempted to rebuy it digitally along with the DLC but I know between this and MCC and then maybe CoD once we can snag a good deal for it there would be no time for me to be playing ANOTHER multiplayer shooter. (Not to mention Sunset Overdrive, Inquisition, Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros...)

I did this on hard with some randoms last night and you need to crouch by the column on the right at the spawn to get the oracles in the back. Have three guys on that right side, two on the left and the last guy triggers the oracles then hides on the column on the far left side or in the cave with the spirit bloom chest.

I got a hard Atheon checkpoint if anyone wants to try it tonight. I have tomorrow off since its Election Day so I can be on all night. I want to get this done before the reset.

You are a Farcry from having too many FPS games 4 there is something missing from your list man.

:applause:

Very well done my friend hahah

But for me that isn't on my list! I LOVED the original Farcry and 2 was pretty solid but I never got hooked on to 3 or Blood Dragon. I have played them but it was more of a thing where other things were out and so I just never gave them enough time and that is going to be the case now so I will just hold off. Most likely I will end up getting FC4 NEXT Winter Steam sale or something.

Did anyone at Bungie confirm/deny that shards/energy will still be good come expansion?

Been a WoW player for too long where your mats are meaningless come expansion, and I want to know if I should consider grinding mats now.

Tuesday night works for me. I have to head out of town for work again so I will be gone the rest of the week. I don't think we should have any issues finishing it pretty quick. We're starting to get efficient.

Based on the item previews/leaks there are new exotic materials. But they are more than likely raid specific drops that are used to bump up pre-existing light levels to level 32.

I hope that the exotic material and stuff is used to increase weapon damage on previous Exotics (and legendaries). They currently max at 300 but now the new ones are supposedly going to 320. Having means to upgrade our old guns to be on par at least with the new ones would be nice.

I could give it a shot with my level 30 Titan. I wouldn't mind scoring a helm so I can use Armamentarium instead of my exotic helm.

I also want to run the other save (at Oracles) through quick though first. I'll have to give it to someone else so I can use my Hunter on that.

I completely underestimated the post-20 grind. At this point I don't think I'll ever make it to the Raid, which is kind of sad. After three solid evenings of Strike playlists, I managed to go from 21.5 to ~21.7. That took the wind out of my sails and I haven't touched it since. Is the progress less steep after I hit, say, 22 and Vanguard Rank 2? Because there's no way I'm going to play the same Strikes over and over for another 30 hours to get to 26 and maybe have a shot at the Raid.

Strikes should be supplementary - focus on bounties, patrols & public events and getting to vanguard rank 2. At rank 3 and every rank after 3, you will get free items in the mail.

A 30 minute investment a day to max out your Vanguard marks:

Do 2 public events a day - this will get you 8 marks (+2 in the mail)

*Most consistent event occurs in on Earth in the Divide at 0:15 and 0:45 every hour (+/-3 minutes)

Do the daily story mission on heroic - this nets you 5

If you do this, you can afford to slot out your gloves, chest, boots with legendaries within 2 weeks (195 marks/200 earned) which will put you at around 23/24 pre-upgrades and 26/27 with upgrades. At this point you can decide if you want to save for a helm (120 marks) or save up coins and wait for an exotic helm from Xur (recommended).

Slow and steady but raid ready all at the very low cost of 7 total hours ;)

Thanks, this is helpful. We always do the Daily Heroic mission first, then Patrol or Strikes depending on mood (always updating Bounties), but these steps give me a little hope. I'm fairly close to Vanguard 2.

What are you trying to accomplish by doing strikes? Maybe I am mistaken, but your comment about only going from 21.5 to 21.7 makes it seem like you are under the impression that you are still leveling up via xp.

Actually, the jump from 20 to the mid 20s is prety damn fast, just all based on your gear. Was trying to look at your gear, but I'd what your gamertag is.

Same, I went from 20 to 24 in weekend I believe. It is going from 28/29 - 30 that is the real difficulty ; P

got gave you a good layout of what to do for sure so you follow that and you should be golden

I meant that all the new gear I got via rewards or random drops gave me an additional 3 Light or so. I understand the best way to level up is by purchasing the equipment, but none of it is available to me yet. It was frustrating playing and making negligible to no progress. We prefer doing Strikes because they're actually fun to play, but I guess I didn't realize how inefficient they are compared to slogging through low-level Patrols.

The friend I've been playing with made it to 24 really quickly, and I've actually got higher Vanguard reputation than him. I think he got lucky with gear drops and I've been relatively unlucky. Either way, I think I've got sufficient pep talk to make me pick it up again this week. Thanks to all.

Wow. Great info! Havent done many public events, will definitely keep a look out. Are these posted/listed anywhere? When I look at the map at the tower I see something called "Events" but can not find it. Thought the position looked like where the globe is in the room with the Vanguards but couldn't find anything.

This was part of the mentality that lead to the rise in popularity of the "loot caves" as many people were expecting results from playing slot machines when there was a guaranteed route to items in front of them. Like I said strikes are supplementary, something to do after you get your daily checklist finished. Unfortunately if you were aware of this when you started the game, then you would have hit rank 2 shortly after 20 and experienced the bump to 24 that was mentioned. Everything will be OK though - it's a smoother ride from 24 to 28-29, and you will be swimming in exotics from the vault and nightfall.

There's a site called destiny public events but it's not entirely accurate. Take it as an estimate and get there 5 minutes before to do patrol missions and leave for the next area if it hasn't happened 5 minutes after the estimated time.

I still recommend the Divide as a guaranteed event 90% of the time though. You will probably see people gathering there around the mentioned time slots. If you are there by yourself, there's a chance it doesn't trigger or it already happened.

This site is helpful, though not always accurate: http://destinypublicevents.com

I always do at least one public event a day for the reward in the mail, but if there's a patrol or public event bounty I'll spend more time on them. This route has always worked well for me: Go to Mothyards by X:28 or X:58, after event (or X:05, X:35 if no event) go straight to Fallen Shore, after event (or X:10, X:50 if no event) head to Divide. Mothyards and Divide are very reliable. Divide is best because it's always a Walker, which you can solo; sometimes the other locations give a target who can be really tough to kill by yourself.

Also, I got really frustrated with life after 20 for a couple weeks, but once I got the marks to get one legendary things started rolling and I was fully slotted with legendary armour within a few more days.

Yea, like gotdott says, you have to purchase the Legendary Armor with vanguard marks, then add in an Exotic Helmet from Xur on the weekend with strange coins.  Then just focus on leveling those up.  That will take a pretty long time and cost plenty of spinmetal/spirit bloom/helium/relic iron along with Ascendant Shards & Glimmer but you will be on your way to raid level that way.

Max your exotic helm when you get it as it will be your highest light item +30.  I'd level your other Legendaries at a similar rate to get your light to 26+.  At that point if you max all your Legendary armor you can get to 28/29, but it is probably best to conserve your shards and start raiding for the Raid Armor drops you need because you cannot get to 30 without having a full set of Raid Armor and that will take anywhere between 1 and an infinite number of raid runs since the drops are completely random.

This article is a bit outdated, but it still explains how the light levels work and what gear gets you 'x' light value.

http://www.tentonhammer.com/guides/destiny/getting-past-level-20-%E2%80%93-guide-light-points-destiny

The Public Events gotdott listed are the ones I normally do.  You can also add in a trip to  Skywatch that spawns @ :00/:30 each hour, but is a bit less consistent than the :15/:45 event in the Divide  Also you can patrol Mars as right at the beginning an event spawns at :00, then quickly go to cosmodrome to get the :15 event in the Divide.  Here is a site that lists them:

Heh - I got my Hunter (3rd character) from level 1 to level 25 or so in just a matter of hours. But that was because I got lots of drops of Hunter gear on my other two characters. I had an exotic armor and a couple of legendaries. I think I was only missing one piece and then I got that as a drop or Cryptarch reward.

The biggest problem I had for my Hunter was a lack of sapphire wire or whatever it is that is the armor upgrade material. THAT was the biggest use for the loot cave when I did it with my Titan: getting the armor mats and also just random engrams to upgrade the Cryptarch rank.

Now with my Hunter I just end up buying tons of greens from the Vanguard armory and breaking them down. It doesn't take long to max out your glimmer again, especially if you use the extra glimmer items.

But yeah, you may find that what is slowing you down from going from 22-27 or so is the lack of basic upgrade materials. Make sure you farm stuff while doing those patrol bounties and waiting for public events. Always hit the caves and other enemy spawn rooms as they are reliable chest locations.

Listen to Glock - get an exotic helm and upgrade that sucker all the way (using your ascendant shards). You can hold probably hold off on the last few upgrades on the legendaries (the ones that require ascendant shards) to see if you can score some Raid gear. But I will tell you that being level 28-29 makes the Raid SO much easier than being 26. You definitely want to get that legendary gear up to the shard level though at least. So buy and break down green armor if you need those parts - glimmer will not be a problem later.

It doesn't take long to max out you glimmer again, especially if you use the extra glimmer items.

But yeah, you may find that what is slowing you down from going from 22 to 27 or so is the lack of basic upgrade materials. Make sure you farm stuff while doing those patrol bounties and waiting for public events. Always hit the caves and enemy spawn rooms as they are reliable chest locations.

I'm pretty much ready whenever at this point for that Hard mode Oracles/Templar run. Work is slow for me today so I can take a 30-45 minute break to knock that out.

You guys just let me know via CAG (this thread or PM). I'm all for doing it twice even - maybe once early and then again later (after 8pm Pacific).

Not sure if I'm right, but is the most shard cost effective way to hit 28 to max an Exotic and upgrade only one Legendary to the 2nd to last upgrade (everything else upgraded until shards needed)?  I believe that is a shard cost of 28 resulting in 99 light.

I got all legendary gear aside from the helmet for my Hunter.

on another note, what's a good way to powerlevel new characters without fireteams?
