Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

Dagnabit, I still haven't gotten the afros yet, just some birthday cake and a top hat. Now I keep fighting Elusids, though I don't mind that the dungeons are slightly harder and I can fight Moai Minstrels.

The top hat is nice - sadly(?), it's also the best helmet for my main char so I've been wearing it. I did get the afros, but they a) are expensive-ish for what they are, b) don't have great defense (although not bad) and c) look pretty dumb.

On the plus side, this autumn fayre has been good for alchemy items - several lucky pendants (3 so far) and a bunch of fresh water, even cloths, and even a few flurry feathers.

Sorry about the posts lately - can you tell I've been home sick?

All this DQ talk is forcing me to spend some of my BB rewards on it soon. Last DQ game I played was DQIII on NES. Hopefully this one will be just as awesome :)

If you have a way to play DQ8 (PS2), get and play that. It is excellent.

Hey, Alchaid 3 isn't horrible! Got a couple Lucida Shards and Birdsong Nectars to start things off. Bummed I didn't get the Brown Afro last week though.

Yeah, I got a Lucida Shard and an Astral Plume today. Is the alchemy recipe for a Lucida Shard something I should've gotten in-game, or is it a reward for a post-game quest?

Got 3 astral plumes (sold at the same price as fresh water!) and a lucida shard. The lucida shard recipe is not from post-game, but I don't remember where I got it.

You need to play the remake on GBC, as well as the remakes of IV and V on DS. DO IT. DO IT NOW.

LOL! GET TO DA CHOPPA!!11!! DO EET!!111!

Picked up DQIX last night, slow starter but I'm interested to play more. I have sooooo many DS games on backlog I don't think I could add anymore... oh wait, more are coming now that's it's Oct. 1st. /sigh

A little dramatic, maybe?
Is the multiplayer functionality, like tag/canvassing, compatible across regions? Like can the US version interface with the Japanese version?
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that DoK's awesome grotto tags that she got while in Japan most likely came from people with the Japanese version of the game. So I'd say yes...

I'm not sure if multiplayer works, but I know you can tag people in other regions.

I don't think multiplayer works, my husband and I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Though we may have screwed something up Canvassing DEFINITELY DOES work across regions.

Do the grotto bosses speak Japanese to you? :)
Do the grotto bosses speak Japanese to you? :)
No. And the people you canvass are all in English. Nothing is in Japanese. Their names are basically romanized versions of their kana/katakana names.
I need almost 50,000G to buy what I need in the DQVC today :hot:
yeah there was a couple high priced items in mine too.

back to back demon spears... now I don't have to craft them but they would be cheaper to do so.

Had a skull helm, I think my first...

And Hela's Hammer. Wanted 25k for it.

oh well , that's easy 5 mins. Glad there isn't any grind for gold.
I assume they got some monies to start and then used one of the alchemy to shop runs
Yeah that's the Ear Cozy trick, which is the cheaper version but only nets you 25k.

Getting Gold rings & bracers and then silver armor to alchemize will give you a better profit.

I have 453K in the bank, which is a rounded number to get 99x all three items. Then alchemize for 5 minutes all 99, and sell.

This will sell for about 30-33k and I just stick 453K back in the bank.

Easy 30k to spend at the DQVC. It's boring to do all the achemizing but there isn't a faster one, and I usually do it when I'm watching something on tv, so multi-tasking ftw.

Question: how hard is this game?

I consider myself an RPG fan but I've never finished a DQ game... I played a little bit so far and though it hasn't exactly drawn me in, it doesn't seem too bad. But I heard this is one of the best DQ games so I figured, it's either now or never for me.

Not to hard. Though some spots can be s lil tricky. But leveling up in super easy and fun. Skill points are your fun.
Easily one of my favorite RPG games.

If u get stuck or need help GameFAQs helps a lot with maps quest help and other pointers.

Some of the bosses feel slightly overpowered given the level of the regular enemies in that same dungeon. The game is pretty basic in its mechanics and presentation. Its purposefully classic to fault. It doesnt do a lot of things, but it does what it does do well.

need more Orichalcum to make so many things.
Upgrade my staff and the rusty helmet.
Been stealing mini medals from mimics and cannibox.

damnnnnn

Had a reckless neckace in my store last night. You definitely want to buy those up when you see them since you need Lucky Pendants for so many alchemy-only items (if you want to try to make as many as you can).

Are you guys just ganking those recipes off the Internet, or do you actually have them in-game? I have the rusty helmet and rusty shield (I think?) but no recipes for them. In fact, I've done most of the non-full-weapon-level quests but I'm still missing tons of recipes.

Seems like this game follows the formula of the last few games...keep thinking you're at the final dungeon...but wait, you're not!

I'm having trouble with gold, never thought to abuse the alchemy system.

About 70 hours in, and finally at the last dungeon (I think). Game is amazing, despite my hesitation about being on the DS, it is a very fun game.

Here are where i get them from, GameFAQs

I don't know if you get the Rusty armor recipes.

Heres a few
19) Erdrick's helmet = Rusty helmet x 1 + Glass frit x 9 + Orichalcum x 1
26) Erdrick's shield = Rusty shield x 1 + Glass frit x 9 + Orichalcum x 1

Most recipes i cant find so i head over to GameFAQs.
Seems like you need Orichalcum for lots of stuff.
Need Mini medals galore.

I have Dragonlord Claws in my store today. Even though A) I don't use claws on any character and B) they're uber-pricey (40k gold), I'm thinking about buying them just because you don't often see 4-star-rarity items in the DQVC. But I know I'm not going to get 100% wardobe completion anyway. Decisions, decisions.

Hey the Dragonlord claws are the strongest ones.
May pick those up.
13) Dragovian claws = Dragonlord claws x 1 + Agate of evolution x 1 + Red orb x 1 14) Dragovian lord claws = Dragovian claws x 1 + Agate of evolution x 3 + Red orb x 3 15) Xenlon claws = Dragovian claws x 1 + Agate of evolution x 3 + Red orb x 3 See Alchemiracles section for details

Didn't get a Ruinous Shield last week but doing the quest to get one.

I did have a wyrmwand in my shop but I recently did the quest to get one for my Mage. But may change it when she becomes a Sage. We will see.

One of my chars does use claws and I had to do the grotto chest timing trick to get those suckers earlier. I had no idea they'd sell stuff like that in DQVC.

I can't imagine myself ever doing the chest-timing trick. I am definitely not that hardcore. One reason I know I'll never get 100%. But anyway....

I just came across this a couple of days ago: http://www20.atpages.jp/dq9tools/tmape.cgi. If you guys haven't seen it, it's a way to check your exact grotto to see what level of chests it has AND where they're located. Totally awesome. Now you don't have to wonder if that astral plume or mini-medal came from a crappy chest or an A-level chest playing hard-to-get.

You just put in your grotto name and then hit the button, and then pick the location for your grotto (based on this map: http://www.woodus.com/den/gallery/graphics/dq9ds/maps_treasure/dq9grotto_eng.png). Full instructions can be found here: http://www.woodus.com/den/games/dq9ds/effectivetreasurehunting.php (which is how I came across it).

I finally got a grotto that has some A-level chests in it, which is pretty exciting. Although the grotto itself isn't that great, with respect to monster levels. My monster list still has tons of missing entries that I need better grottos for.

^^ The thing is, once you do all that, the timing trick isn't that hardcore ;). All you need to do is quick save and reload and start a timer and open the chests at the right times. You can keep it running the whole time you are in a grotto. I guess the only "hardcore" thing about it is having to compare the Japanese text from the table that shows what each level chest has (which you can translate) to the table generated for your particular grotto (which can't be translated - at least as an entire web page).

But yeah, I was lucky enough to get a few high level grottos from the Best Buy tag mode event. I would not even be getting those yet with my own characters. I have them all up to level 75-80 or so but haven't been hardcore enough to revocate them and all that which is needed to get the higher grottos. So while I have encountered some high level nonsters in the grottos I got that day, I am still missing many things as well that aren't showing up in those ones. I think my monster list is at 88% or so. The thing is, this game is so time consuming to obtain 100% (on anything: monsters, items, wardrobe, etc) that I kind of reached a point of deciding it wasn't worth my time going any further with it. I mean, if those were reachable goals within another 20-30 hours I might do it. But it is going to take way longer than that (on top of the 160 or so hours I've already put in!). I did want to at least unlock and beat all the Legacy bosses but I've even run out of steam on that and actually never even unlocked any additional ones besides Baramos and the 2 I got from the tag events.

I thought you had to do some thing where your character got almost dead and then you healed them a certain number of times depending on your magical mending stat, and then checked how many times it took to heal them against some lookup table, and then looked for red squares or blue squares and checked the kanji text and all that crap? Isn't the the "hoimi" table thing?

That is for getting the Legacy boss item drops and alchemiracle (100% success) items. Those are completely different ;). But those are actually even easier (with no need to parse the Japanese text). You should definitely be doing that as otherwise battles against Legacy bosses are kind of a waste of time.

When you guys updated how many quest did you guys get.
I only got one but thought u usually got 2.
According to gameFAQ ur supposed to get to.
One with Stella and one with Sterling.

i did too for my Martial Artist Lee
