Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

Bought a second pumpkin head today. :)

I tried farming dark shields on that island and it was slow going. I think I'd rather just farm grottos, and get XP at the same time. I have a level 93 map that I know where every chest is, so it only takes a few minutes to run through, although I usually evac before the bottom and start over.

I found to good maps.
The First Bronze Lair of Dolour land ed me some cool booty.
I got a Fuddle Bow, Combat Boots and a Glombolero.

The second one was ok, but it did have Moai Minstrel in it.
So I can do the Luminery quest finally.
More skill points. Hooray.

You get a new map every time you clear one.
I live in Montana so i can't swap tags but i may be moving so maybe ill get some more.

And I think the Gladitor is the upgrade of the Warrior.

Good day yesterday - stumbled across some Beast Claws in a grotto so I could make the Beastmaster claws for a quest, which in turn gave me the liquid metal recipes. Made a liquid metal shield and spear (I had happened upon metal slime shield and spear previously in grottoes). And making those gave me the 25% Alchonomicon accolade, which was nice.

Your only at 25%, im at 50%.
But i make stuff even if I don't plan on using.
I have the Metal Slime Helm and hope i get more.
Want a slime outfit of hotness.
Fought Sig Sig and that was a tough battle.

I have a confession: I just reached 250 hours and last night I started using hoimi tables. I really never expected to get this into the game, but I keep getting drawn back in. There are other DS games I want to play that aren't this!

But anyway, hoimi table: It worked nicely the first few times but on the third try I must have messed it up, probably because I had to move through over 250 spaces in the table and I lost count. Are large numbers like that typical? Are there reliable ways to minimize it, or is it just random?

I figure it'll be another 50 hours before I get into chest timers. :cold:
Since I've completed the game, what should I do now to keep myself interested in it?
Get the train back, if you haven't. I need to fire my game up and get the last months worth of quests and characters.

Absolutely go to Pt Llaffan and do the quest there. Then you can wander around exporing or whatever floats your boat. I'm trying to finish every quest, except possibly some of the Swinedimples ones you need weapon skills for.

I may or may not try to kill all the legacy bosses. Honestly, if I don't find a grotto with an all MKS floor soon I might just stop. I think I have around 94 grottos right now and only one even has MKS in it at all. Are they that rare?

I have two grottos that have MKS in them as uncommon enemies and I say they are overrated. I have a floor thats entirely LMS, and I think thats quicker, despite less xp per pop. Sure, MKS drop Orichalcum, but I think I've been getting it quicker from blue chest mini-medals/buying them. They're a pain to find, then they run away.

I haven't had the experience of having 1 enemy floors. I've fought plenty of Metal Kings in this one grotto, but only with the help of my one lance user, or the lucky critical from a multihit.

Gotta go vanish when hunting slimes, just so you can get up behind them to get the maximum chance to get a free round at the start. Every little bit helps. Unless it doesnt actually work that way :p

Yeah, a LMS-only floor would probably work pretty well, too. Maybe I should explore more of my 50-something and 60-something ruins grottoes to see if I have one of those. After I got more 70 and 80-level grottoes I stopped exploring the maps I got that were lower-level.

I haven't played much, but I have a question:
how can I damage metal slimes?
I can't even dent them, and my minstrel has the metal slash (?) attack which doesn't even work.
Damn metal slimes always run away too.

Pick up Fisticuffs until you get Multifist on all four characters, and have them all use it in one round. It'll take down the little bugger in one round, up until the liquid metal slimes.

Thanks for the quick reply!

That seems like an inefficient use of skill points that early in the game, when skill points are harder to come by. Metal slash should work fine, just keep trying it. In general, the only good way to hunt metal monsters (anything stronger than the basic metal slimes and maybe the metal medleys) is to use the skills that either miss or do critical hits. Those two skills are Hatchet Man for the axe and Thunder Thrust for the spear. If you go ahead and learn one of those you'll be well off for where you are and for later when you're fighting the harder metal monsters.

I generally combine falcon sword+metal slash, multifist, and a Thunder Thrust.
Man I wish I didn't try to level to max so quickly, since now all my characters except 1 are too weak to go down to that grotto.:)

Seconding/thirding Hatchet Man and Thunder Thrust over Multifists. I'd usually use Metal Slash+Falcon Blade, Flailing Nails (claws skill), Hatchet Man, and Thunder Thrust. I think the claws tree is generally more useful than unarmed, plus Flailing Nails has an advantage over Multifists in that it tries to hit the same enemy four times instead of targeting randomly. Backlash is right, though: eventually you'll want to go all axes/spears for metal hunting.

Ugh, that sucks. Although, last night (after bitching in this thread) I did get probably the best grotto I can without having revocated: Ruby World of Hurt level 99. It's a cave grotto and had MKS on floors 7 and 8 (along with other stronger enemies). So I'm somewhat happier. I anyway need 4 more tags to open up my inn, so maybe I can trade with someone who has a better map for leveling.

Interestingly, I had two separate Spellward Circlets in my DQVC yesterday. Tthey were listed separately, and one was 26,000 and the other was 13,000. I already had one so I didn't buy either, but I didn't know the DQVC spit out different prices like that. I knew the items were somewhat random, but it sucks that the prices are, too.

OMG. After getting mauled by Zoma lv. 68 for 21 turns to the point where my whole party is dead except for my last gladiator, who has 20 HP left, she kills him with a pitiful ~200 damage Falcon Slash because the idiot decides to tension up three times in a row. It was a real Dragon Quest moment.

I'm so close to getting that Aliahan headpiece and then I'm never fighting Zoma again.

The absolute best part is the gladiator was wearing the rest of the Aliahan set when she killed him. So awesome.

Same thing happened to me a with Spellward Circlets. I don't think it's that random. Generally DQVC prices = half of what you'd pay in a store. Maybe the rule goes out the window when there are duplicates.

Was anyone else disappointed by the post game? Seems like the only real thing is the dungeon crawling.

I was expecting something awesome like the DQ8 post game, but sadly it wasn't to be.

8 had the Dragovian trials, and then a "better" ending for the main game when you re-did it after getting all the Dragovian armor.

8 required massive grinding to beat the 8 dragons, but you got a better ending. 9 has all the quests plus random dungeon crawling in order to level up to beat the legacy bosses. So 9 has more stuff, but no better ending. 9 definitely requires more work to beat all the legacy bosses, but it seems like slightly more fun work. Just depends on your preference, I guess.

So far all the post-game story quests have been way more interesting than the stories during the main game. Like, "ooh, what happens next?" interesting. I don't think any of the DQs, except maybe VII, have had particularly compelling stories, so it's a nice surprise.

The legacy bosses are pretty fun. Just the fact that they're all in the game is really cool, but they end up being a good challenge and they drop awesome outfits as well. I don't think I'm crazy enough to level one up to 99, but thankfully it seems like the rewards top off around level 69. (Unless you want the Estard Clothes.
Which I do.
)

I guess my complaint with the quests is that most of them require you to grind enemies for rare drops, or something similarly annoying. I would've prefered 50 well written quests than 200+ fetch quests.

I'll probably jump back into it soon as I'm breezing through 4 Heroes of Light pretty quickly.

For the chest timer, do you start counting from the instant you click A on the load screen? Or does the countdown start after loading when you first see the dungeon (since it takes 3-4 seconds to actually load the game)? I might try it after all.

Also, regarding quick saves, can you quick save more than once in a row? Or, what's the difference between a quick save and a regular save? I have never used quick saves.... I just close my DS and let it sleep if I'm not in a good place to get to a church to save.
I gave up on the post-game content. I was never much of a post game guy. I was satisfied with the main quest and a few extra dungeons.
Same. I believe this one will sit on my shelf as a collectible now.

Quick saves delete upon a load. The idea of a quick save is to save immediately without needing to be at an actual save point. When you load the quick save it deletes itself. Many games also do this to allow the player to save but not be able to "cheat" by save/loading their way through situations.

It depends on the timer you're using. The one here gives you a few seconds before you're supposed to load the game. I've been using this one for the Kawasaki locker map and you start it and load the game at the same time.

Ok, cool, maybe I'll give it a try. BTW, what's so great about the Kawasaki locker map? I have my own map with some S and A ranked chests....

I think the main advantage is that enough people have it for someone to have made a timer app specifically for it, and so it's incredibly user friendly. You can even use it through Google Translate to avoid having to look up a bunch of Japanese names. Also it has quite a few chests with metal slime equipment.

Edit: Oh crap, I just noticed some guy made a real translation of the Kawasaki timer. No more Engrish guessing!

Oh, nice, I didn't know there was an English version.

...

Now I need to forget it exists or else I'll be tempted to check the rest of my grottoes with it.
Ah, I see. Now that we have tools like this (http://www.yabd.org/apps/dq9/chesttimer.php - English language timer that works with any map) it's probably not as big of a deal.
:drool::bouncy::drool:

Renewal of this game 100%

I was thinking of messing with the different language, but that was serious work... not fun. this on the other hand...

I finally tried out the English language timer this morning (with my best map) and it worked great. Grabbed a stardust sword and some metal slime sollerets (for one of the quests).

Only problem I see is that the items list starts at 7 seconds, but from my experience you can't really get anything until 10 seconds or later, just because it takes that long to load your game, press B to get rid of the dungeon message, press select for the battle screen (to rezone the items), and then press B to leave the battle screen. Unless I'm missing something.

This is going to be a really expensive week on the DQVC. Luckily 2 of the items available to me today are also available from DLC quests. Next July.
