Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

I unlocked my first special class last night; ranger.. As if I want to make anyone in my party a dirty tree-hugging hippie.

Every 10 battles or so, I see a scarewolf around boat town, but I can't get the friggin credit for the martial artist special class.. I must be doing something wrong. I use war cry, they get scared, then I kill them - i never get credit.

I had the same problem with that quest initially. IIRC, you need to kill them right after the war cry takes effect and before they have another turn, since them getting a turn takes them out of the terror state. They still need to be in it when you land the killing blow.

That's ok, Ranger isn't a very good class anyway. I can't understand everybody beating the game with it, honestly. The strategy guide is right - Ranger pretty much sux.

Dealing 2/3-3/4 the damage that my Paladin does, to the entire enemy party? I'll stick with the Ranger, thanks! His Starburst throw or whatever it is one-hit kills a lot of stuff in the final dungeon - though to really turn him into a powerhouse, one would need some strength boosts and some levels in Mage/Priest/whatever to bump up his MP.

I guess I never posted the party I beat the game with:

Level 34 Paladin (lv 35 Warrior, lv 9 Mage, lv 14 Martial Artist, lv 14 Thief, lv 18 Minstrel, lv 15 Gladiator)
Level 42 Ranger (lv 23 Martial Artist, lv 12 Thief)
Level 44 Priest (lv 12 Paladin, lv 19 Thief)
Level 41 Armamentalist (lv 18 Minstrel, lv 20 Mage, lv 5 Ranger)

What I did was have my fastest person attack, then everyone else War Cry.
So even if the wolf recovers, another person would War Cry them back to fear, and then the fast person would attack first the next turn.

I've been leveling up side classes but mostly sticking to what I made them start at, so I still have Minstrel, Soldier, Priest, Mage at around mid 20's. I dunno. I think it's a terrible combination.

The person that war crys has to kill them I think. IF I remember the quest right, I haven't done it yet but I received it.
Draekon, are they regular quests which unlock legacy grottos? Or DLC?
There are some that are DLC-quest only if everything is the same as the japanese version. One of which is being offered at Comic-con as a tagged map, which pete reported on earlier in the thread.

I don't know specifics on the others, but I've been trying to find out info on how to obtain the others. Of course they're all obtainable through tag regardless should you find someone else with the maps.

Wouldn't getting omnivocational boomarang.. guy.. work better with a class with higher attack? Then again, I don't know how much attack the ranger class winds up with.

I've been banking skill points with one of my characters, saving up for one of the elite classes.. maybe on my next class switch - which I'll do once finish the stupid Scarewolves quest - I'll try ranger out. worst case, I get more delicious skill points.

It may already be burried in this thread, but how do the DLC quests work? I logged into the DQVC for the first time last night and got 1 quest, which I can't do yet anyway. Are they being released in a staggered fashion, or are they released randomly etc?

I heard it's once a week and someone had specifically mentioned friday. We'll find out tomorrow if that's true or not I guess. Last friday was the first day I recieved the first DLC quest.

MY DQVC did not update today. I walked down to Starbucks as I have every day this week and after it connected I had the same items as yesterday (some of which I'd already bought). Weird. Oh well, it's not like I'm going to miss another day of a Mini Medal, three Royal Soils and a Birthday Cake (has anyone figured out what that's for yet?)

The same thing happened last thursday too. If it keeps happening on thursday, we'll just have to assume that thursday doesn't get a new store.

nah, i completed it my way

Finally got to connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi at the Dentist's office lololol.

But when I went to the DQVC it disconnected me and Sellma said I can only connect once per day?
What? :(

It didn't let me see the items or anything.

Edit: I just read previous posts. I'm guessing it's a Thursday thing?

You can connect back to see the items. However if today was your first day connecting, there were no items today.

EDIT: Wasn't really clear enough that you can visit your last store you downloaded without wi-fi.

Any details on the map Gamestop is going to be giving away on the 31st?

Well the DS knows when your birthday is - might have something to do with that?

You can change your birthday at will within the game. I had set my characters birthday as the day I started the game and received an accolade for it. I didn't receive a cake or anything, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was related to a wi-fi quest.

I fought the boss at the front of the palace, but got wiped, and didn't save for quite awhile. Lost like 10k. I have to grind to beat the boss anyway.

Figured out what You guys were talking about finally.
Away to up your skill point for your guys.

Im starting with my Minstrel and swords, he's got the Miracle Sword.
Im doing Gladitor now and Warrior is next.

Then I'll switch Priest to Martial Artist and vise versa to up there Stave skill.
I beat the Academy last night and accepted a lot of quest for skills.

What do those do exactly?
Trying to find the red sign for swords and the Stave guy for my 2 guys.

thx guys

I'm glad I picked up the game on launch, as it's a lot of fun, but I haven't gotten too much playtime with it yet. No online shopping yet and I'm only on my third boss fight. I can't wait to see what kind of post game content there is.

So I just had a random issue with my DQVC. I tried to access it, for the first time, and wasn't able to. Was told I can only access the Wifi once a day and when given the option to go without wifi, she told me she didn't have the information needed to get the products.

It's not working for anyone today, if you read the last page of this thread.

Don't worry. It happened to me too.

Sorry if I derail the conversation a bit, but 24 pages is a bit much to scour through

I'm very curious about this game. I played DQIV and loved every second of it. How does this stack up? Obviously if we're 24 pages in on discussion, it must be half decent ;) But is it worth picking up?

Todays wi-fi produced...

Store (Although mine was crappy)
Quest (Two! 122 [Normal] + 123 [Story])
Guest (Accessable via elevator)

Heh... Birthday Cake and Party Popper is required for quest 122. Wonder when the store will give me a cake...

You have your answer right there. You'll love this one too. I like this one better myself, although I haven't completed the main story yet.

Hmm, I guess with several CAGs that have finished it's time to ask the question--where does everyone rank this in the pantheon of DQ games? I'm especially curious if you thought it was better than DQ V, since I haven't played that one yet.

It's different. In the traditional sense, definitely not better than V. I'd probably put IV and VIII above it as well.

However. I will end up putting more time into this game than I put into any of those (already closing in on 60 hours, which is more than I put into IV or V, but less than VIII), the addition of all the post-game content, especially the incentive to grind for gear, etc. It's very addictive.

Before it came out someone posted an article comparing it to Dragon Quest meets Diablo meets Oblivion. I'd say they got it 2/3 right. It definitely has the feel of DQ and the addictiveness of Diablo (if on a more limited scale). However, I don't know if they were comparing the epic sense of scope or the quest system to Oblivion, but either way it doesn't stack up in that area.

As a traditional game, I'd give it an 8, but once you factor in all the other stuff it does well it's a 9-9.5 easily. If they'd made the multiplayer wi-fi instead of local (so it would be of any use in America) it might have easily been a 10.

Thanks for the response.

SORRY I OVER LOOKED SOMETHING IN AN INTERNET THREAD. I WON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN.

But seriously, I can't believe I overlooked it. If I had made a thread, your comment would've been warranted. I thought I had kept up with the thread, but apparently just glanced it over quickly.

My tier list:

Top:
DQ 5 - Excellent story, perhaps one of my favorite stories in an RPG. The monster thing is cool too.
DQ 6 - Great twists, great gameplay and class system, just an overall solid game.

Very High:
DQ 8 - Really feels like Toriyama came alive for this one in terms of presentation. Loved the characterization, especially between you and the Princess.
DQ 9 - So far, I'm loving the gameplay. The story is okay but I never feel like I'm out of stuff to do in the game, and I haven't even gotten to post game yet.

High:
DQ 7 - I love these kinds of stories and feel like they've been mostly unexplored, the only other game I can think of off the top of my head that's like it is Valkyrie Profile. Retains most of DQ6's class system. Falls because of ugly presentation that really detracts from the game.
DQ 4 - Awesome chapter system, but it stretches a little bit.
DQ 3 - Nice twist in the end, fun class system, but I feel like it drags in the midgame after you get the boat.

Mid:
DQ 1 - Gameplay is still good and classic, but it's no longer challenging. Good for a refresher.

Low:
DQ 2 - God this game sucks

Someone is a pussy.

I would say 3 and 4 are the best followed closely by 5. After that my preferences are pretty murky, though 7 is probably my least favorite. Haven't played 6.

Store wasn't all to bad for me today, but I lack funds to get most of the stuff. But I did get a Dragon Scale and had a visitor, Alena. She gave me one of her dresses. woo

Anyone have a day where the store didn't update and there was nothing in it? (yes I did buy everything in the store the day before)

Yes, yesterday. For everyone. Seems like it's every Thursday.

Do Dragon Quest Monster: Joker and Rocket Slime count.
I loved Joker and hope they bring 2 to the states.

Got my guys up very high with skill points.

To find the dancer in the plains fight Goody o Bags.
Gold Golem quest- fight gold golems in the valley in the SE corner of the plains.

Anyone know how to get to the island North of Wormwood Creek.
I heard that's where the red sign is for the Sword master at the academy.

Also it is worth going to Tywell Cave for the Wand master as you get a pretty sweet Wand for your Mage, the Brouhaha Boomstick. It's pretty sweet.

Still loving this game, though my DQVC sucked. Alchemy items and a bday cake that i picked up.
May get the poppers, lol, since you said you will need them. I did et 2 quest too. Sweet.

PS, I went upstairs and didn't see anyone. Am I missing something?

Ha, I think I've bought a half dozen cakes and Party Poppers from the store so far. Good to know at least one of each is good for something.

If you're talking about guests, you go to the elevator and pay attention. I was used to just going to elevator and hitting A. But there was a list today and one was to go to character's room

Not that one. It's the one in the Realm of the Mighty. It's the last of three bookshelves together.

Ah okay, now I remember. No, I don't know what that's for, could have to do with a DL quest maybe?

So like some others, I got my first important guest today. I got Alena (not sure everyone gets the same characters). Even though the dress she gave me is a downgrade for my female characters, I equipped it anyway. It's really a cool feature and total fan service.

Liquid metal slimes are so much easier to take down when 3 people in your party have good odds of doing damage to it with each attack. But they're running away far more frequently today for some annoying reason.

Once I get my pair of mages (yes, I'm masochistic) leveled to the point where I don't think they'll die instantly, I'm heading out to unlock Sage. Luminary seems like it will take quite a bit longer to open up.

Sage took a while for me, Great Trolls are hard to find.

I find Liquid Metals a great grinding spot too. Three characters with Falcon Blades and Metal Slash really does the trick.

I seemed to have an easy time finding them during the endgame, so I'm kinda hoping they're no harder to encounter a second time through.

I've got my Warrior with Metal Slash, Thief with Metalicker, and Mage with Have a Ball so one round is usually doable for LMS, but sometimes it takes two.

I think there might be more of them in the last dungeon. It's kind of a pain to go back, so I was looking for them on the Ondor Cliffs (not sure that's the right name, I think so) which is the only other place they spawn that I'm aware of. I found 5 eventually, but it took a while.

Oh, and one of the best benefits to Sage I've found it the Jack's Knack talent, which lets you change vocations anywhere. Saves a lot of time in going back to Alltrades if you're switching vocations a lot to beef up skills.

There's none in there that I know of. The cliff high ground to the west of the plains is where I found them. There's a shack and a well there so you know you're in the right place. They never show up on the map, and from what I saw they only spawn with the prisma peacock thing, though I can't be 100% sure on that.

The Tower of Nod is where the Metal Kings are supposedly, but I've yet to find one.
