DS Redesign (real this time)
I don't understand why anyone would be upset if they just bought a DS. It plays the same games. It does not make your DS any less fun.
People like to make whiny bullshit arguments to make themselves feel better about adopting early technology when they full well know a redesign will eventually be released.

For the record, I have a launch DS. I will be getting the DSL at some point.

if the screen turns out to be really nice, I might actually get one of these. I love my DS, but I have trouble playing it outside when there is a lot of sunlight.

the improved screens alone will make this almost impossible for me to resist--it's what made me trade in my old GBA SP for the newer one.
I'm gonna have a hard time explaining why I get the nice new one, while she gets the hand me down... damn animal crossing...
Don't know why should would complain if she's getting it for free.

Heck, if she doesn't want it I'll take it. ;)

The DS actually isn't that heavy, but Nintendo always seems to have to improve everything. It will be interesting to see what is all improved on it and how much of a different it makes.

The microphone I see is in a different place where it should have been which is nice, the lights are in an awesome place, and it looks a lot more styling. I wonder if the battery life is improved. Overall looks interesting...

Playing games in the fresh air? Sacrilege!

Uhoh, just thought of something.

What's the deal with games that have online play? Doesn't the game bind you to your specifc DS or something?

So what happens if I buy the redesign, and want to play online?

I THINK that you just get a new WiFi ID. But as far as I know, your record and whatnot are stored on your game card, so you don't lose everything. But your friends would all have to re-add your codes.

I bought a DS the day after Thanksgiving. I have no regrets, this new one may not be out until summer and I would have missed out on 6-7 months of playing cool games.

Not to mention half the games are difficult to impossible to find already.

I'd rather have my Teal DS anyday of the week. This isn't big enough of an improvement for me to want to sell of my old DS anyway. I have no problems with my current DS, except playing it outside, which I shut off the light if I do anyway. So, no problems here.

But you've got to hand it to Nintendo. Heres another way for them to milk you.
I don't really think they are milking anyone, they aren't making you buy it.
Nintendo? Not milking the cow for all its worth? Sure, they're not "making" you buy it, but that doesent mean they're not milking. I cant wait to see the next DS redesign...

Is the N64 the only nintendo system aside from the Gamecube (which may still) that didn't get a redesign? I'm thinking it is but I could be wrong. Virtual Boy doesn't count either.

At first I thought "BS!" cause I really did believe the redesign is a rumor for the moment, of course it's Nintendo... that should have light a bulb in my head. But the redesign too big of a deal that I'm just going to dump my current DS for the new one.. although.. I have a need to give it to my lover and I take the new one when it comes out :D!. Anyhow, I never had too much problems with the DS now and I'm really glad it is a redesign and not a reinvention (but I would like that one prototype someone made up T.T).

Nope, the Nintendo 64 was redesigned as well...

Anyway, I placed a pre-order for the DS Lite at Play-Asia.com today... I can't wait until it's finally out. :)
No analog? No thanks. I'll wait for the redesign of the redesign. I'm one step ahead of you Nintendo.
They arn't going to do analog on the DS. The next gameboy format I could see that happening, but not while that screen is still there

You'll be waiting until DS2 then.

And the N64 had the Funtastic colors series. That's not quite a redesign, but it is worth mentioning.

haha some of you sound like you're trying to convince yourself you dont want it :p i havent got a DS yet, but i MAY get one when the redesigned one goes down in price..dont really want one right now...but i know i will eventually want one maybe in like in the fall....

The NES and SNES were released in multiple iterations in the US? I've never seen anything different. Or are we referring to Japanese redesigns?

I am pleased to see this. Probably won't ever get the new version unless something happens to mine... However, this new sexy version might help to get more mainstream acceptance for the DS. That would mean even more fun and original games.
You'll be waiting until DS2 then.
Then let the games...BEGIN!!

Sony blessed the ps1 gamers with an analog stick halfway through the system's life. If only nintendo were as cool as sony. :D

Oh don't get me wrong. I WILL be getting a Lite, just not anytime soon. I just got a DS for Christmas, so I wanna get as much mileage out of the original model before I upgrade.
Then let the games...BEGIN!!

Sony stole the analog stick halfway through the system's life from Nintendo, which had it from the beginning. If only Sony had any idea of wtf to do like Nintendo. :D
Ahh, there we are. I took the liberty of fixing your post.

Why doesn't the OP start a poll ala the one Kotaku.com is doing? I'm curious to see how many where the opinion of CAGers lie, although the general consensus seems positive.

Only mods can add a poll to existing threads.

I just wish it would come a lot sooner. I was going to pick up a DS in the next couple of weeks. Not some mucn anymore.

Nintendo's handhelds are built with shortcomings for future releases. They do it so things like major control issues won't be changed but minor things that will push people to upgrade. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion but people love to credit Nintendo as being somewhat holy and above being a company simply for profit which is not the case. Fanboyism is a nasty thing

Lookin forward to Nintendo DS Micro EX-SP LS

Either that, or they make the best system they can at the time it's released and upgrade it as new tech becomes more affordable (Li-Ions, backlight, etc.)

That's a dirty trick to make people buy a new ds , i know if i had an old one i would like to own the new one , this makes me mad for you people , they should stick to one model and that's it , i knew it was going to happen all along !

This is not for people who already have a DS. They have changed almost nothing in terms of functionality. All they did was sexy it up, make it a tad smaller and lighter, and make the screens brighter. You can still see and hear everything in DS and GBA games on the original system, and furthermore, all future games will play identically.

This is for people who don't have a DS yet, or who are reluctant to get one. Its also so when they market Revolution/DS functionality, they look related to one another. That's it. This is a LOT less dramatic than the GBA -> GBASP, and even less dramatic than the GBASP -> GBASP(BL) change, since both systems are already backlit and the difference will be noticable, but negligable.

Go Nintendo.

If I can get 80-100 value for my current DS and accessories, I would gladly pay 40 for the new screen. If that never happens, I could care less. I wuv my DS. Bring on the Metroid.

And don't forget, Nintendo will likely release a Metroid Black Original DS bundle, then in the late summer-early fall unleash the new DS stateside, in time for the Revolution.

the neo geo pocket came out before the original GBA and that had a backlight.....

It's never technology, it's strategic development.

No it IS technology. Nintendo publicly has explained that they never used backlighting in that era because it absolutely killed battery life, and of course they were right. The Turbo Express, Nomad, Game Gear, and so on, had backlit LCD screens with terrible refresh rates, but more importantly, that were absolute battery guzzlers. More recently, I think the SP could have been backlit, but once again, its about what their priorities and objectives were. A system with a screen like the PSPs would NOT have been possible even 3 or 4 years ago...the LCD technology and battery technology just wasn't there to make it VIABLE.

But of course, there is always market strategy behind it...it's just a matter of what they wanted to accomplish and provide for the consumer.

So did the Game Gear. You missed most of what I wrote. Afforadably apply the tech. They weren't going to develop something that sucked 6 batteries dry in 2 hours. So they waited for the Li-Ion technology to become cheap enough to put in and then lit their screens.

The neo geo pocket did NOT have a backlight.

Even though I already bought a DS (during december during that whole "price error"), I always wanted a 2nd DS. Guess I'll just wait and get the new one. I like the current DS design, but I like the new one too. The new one is pretty nice and worth waitin for. Originally, I was gonna sell back my DS for the new one but, the trade in values are probably pretty bad, so I might as well keep a 2nd DS for multiplayer wi-fi action.
