This is a sort of deal and was posted in the discussion thread, but since it's only $9.99 I've posted it in the deals section--mods feel free to move.

Available on PSN right now for only $9.99 is the classic FFVII. As I'm sure you all know this can be downloaded and played on either your PS3 or your PSP...
No Analog support? Eh. Oh well.
I guess "switching disks" makes sense, since its basically an emulator with ISOs.

And I swear the PS3 upscales PS1 games for HDTVs to some extent. I played Suidoken on my 720p 64 inch Sony HDTV and it looked smoother (and in a pseudo-widescreen) than it does on my normal 32 inch SDTV. My PS2 games, on the other hand, don't look great on the HDTV (maybe HDMI is "required" for PS2 upscale? I never looked into it)

Now to just figure out how to download it (1.3GB is a bit much for my Satellite internet limited at 7.5 GB in a 30 rolling-day period).
I downloaded mine at work onto the PSP via my PC. ha ha. :)

PS1 games can be smoothed out a bit on the PS3. Its one of the features you can change when you hit the PS button on your controller.
For the most part, it's fine. The gameplay holds up, and I don't mind the dated graphics, but holy balls, the translation is HORRIBLE - typos, grammatical errors, or confusing/incorrect translations every few sentences. When I replayed this on my PSP last year, I once counted an error in every single sentence for seven whole sentences, which I thought was pretty unforgivable. If you're not bothered by terrible, terrible localizations, you should be fine.
So they re-translated this version and it's WORSE than the 1997 US version?
So they re-translated this version and it's WORSE than the 1997 US version?
No, this IS the 1997 version. It's the same disc image you get from the game.

Hmm...so I guess if I own the disc version (from release day, bitches, and it's still in brand new condition!), that the discs can't be installed to the PS3 HDD?

I have yet to play a PS1 game on my PS3...hell, I've done little except half of Uncharted and watch movies with it thus far.

No you can't install any games from disc like you do on 360. It's either a disc copy or a digital copy downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

Make sure you guys turn "PS1 upscaling" ON in your PS3 options menu. The PS3 can upscale PS1 games to 1080P resolution. It should smooth out many of the jaggies and make the game look better, especially the summons. ;)
I find this sort of hard to believe. While the prerendered backgrounds of the exploration part of the game look hideous on PC (all stretched out from their native resolution=pixelated backgrounds), the character models and the battle sequences should look significantly better on the PC...

unless there's some sort of upscaling like someone suggested.

I've played the PC version exhaustively and have played the PSX version as well. The difference is not subtle at all.
I should have been clearer. I don't own the PC version of FF7 and have never played that version (or even seen it played). I was talking about when I play my own PS1 ISOs on an emulator on my PC. And the PS3 does do some upscaling.

Thanks for the quick answer. Lame. But, hey, screw it, I've got the discs. No biggie.
I feel bad for the guy who is buying this on ebay for 49.99
It stands to reason that any game, over a decade after its release, that can still create a response such as this from its fans is worth the cost of admission. Moveover, any attempt by Square Enix to bring more of the FFVII franchise to the masses should be supported.

Add on their any game that the average price on eBay is over $20($25?). I hate not having a physical copy of a game, but I hate expensive ps1 games more.

Fairly certain old sports games are out of the question. There would be too many issues with the licensing. They would have to go back and recode the game to have either generic players or today's players, and they would not make it a very profitable move for them. Definitely not saying it can't happen, though. Don't wanna look stupid if it does. Just doesn't seem like something that would be worth their time. This is very profitable, now, because they are basically dumping an ISO.

Now, Parasite Eve would definitely be a nice addition!

In my opinion upscaling is better for PS2 and smoothing is better for PS1 games.
Not a deal.
I'm not sure what you think a deal is, but when a game becomes available for instant download at a fraction of the price it's been going for in retail (not to mention significantly cheaper than most had predicted), I'd call that a deal.
I think the Japanese got FF7 International on PSN. Is this the same thing? Whats the difference?
IIRC, as far as the actual gameplay, FFVII international was just a re-release in Japan of the NA version. A few additions were made when it was brought over here, and they added those things and re-released it in Japan. There may have been a couple other things as well, but that's how I remember it.

naturally I have $9.23 in my playstation account so now I have to go and buy a 20 dollar card just to get the 77 cent difference...

Can't you add smaller increments directly through PSN? Like with a credit card?

Okay, since I'm new to the whole purchasing thing on PSN, can you install a copy on both the PS3 and the PSP, or is it device tied? I'm sure Google has the answer, but I'm lazy and taking the cheap way out. :)

You can install it on both.
have you seen the prices on ebay lately? at least before this came out

Definitely a deal. Don't be an idiot.
Not only is the game more than the standard PS1 Classics price ($5.99), the game will stay at $9.99 as it's MSRP while it's in the PSN Store. How exactly is this a deal? It should only be a discussion thread about the game.

We have threads about universal price drops. I think this qualifies under that category.

Well then, EVERY PS1 Classic deserves it's own thread then, wouldn't you say so?

I have a question! If you download FF7 to your PS3 and transfer to your PSP, is their a way to transfer the save back on you ps3 so you can occasionally play the same file that you play on your PSP on your PS3? Does that make any sense?
Well then, EVERY PS1 Classic deserves it's own thread then, wouldn't you say so?
Not really. Most PS1 Classics aren't even worth the $5 they're asking for on PSN.

Final Fantasy VII regularly goes for $50-80 depending on the climate/trends.

But it would be considered a price drop according to you.

...yes. I would consider $50 -> $10 to be a price drop.

The game's last price was $20. eBay prices don't really equal a price drop. I don't think there was a thread in Video Game Deals for the PSN/XBL release of Castlevania Symphony of the Night.

They most certainly do.

If you can't find Final Fantasy VII for $20, that's not the going rate for the game. In certain circumstances, listing an item's availability at "retail" is acceptable simply because the going rate is so ludicrous.

A case example would be a SF4 Tournament Edition Stick, where the premium paid on eBay would be 3 times the price of retail... thus, retail is a deal. You're paying less than the norm. Granted, given that it's a digital release in unlimited supply, the situation is a bit different, but the fact remains that this thread will allow some people to play the game at a much lower cost than had been possible before it had been posted.

You know what'd be great if you could buy the games on the playstation website and when you login to the store at home it would automatically download.

I really don't like people like you. You are wrong. Everyone has already said you're wrong. Just be quiet and move along.

But if you can, please go find a place where we can all pick these $20 copies of FFVII.
eh 10 bucks is a little too much for a ps1 game, why don't they all have the usual $5.99 price?
for a game like this, it's a good deal.

This isn't an 80mb platformer? It's over a gb total in size, so yea. I'll go with bandwidth.

They really should implement something like this. XBox Live does.

I have the same question. I want to be able to play it on both using same save files.

I was surprised that they didn't. This was going to be my first purchase.
All right, now that FF7 is out on PSN they need to go ahead and follow through with Suikoden II. :)
co-sign.... FF IX anyone???

The last retail price of this game was $20. eBay prices do not equal retail prices.

Also, your use of everyone is quite broken.
This is not really a deal since it is going to be on PSN for some time and is not on sale....if we posted all the PS1 classics here it would just clog up this forum.....

They once again break their own fixed-price for PS1 games on PSN ($5.99).

This should be $5.99. Not knocking the game, but it's just a digital version of a game that came out in 1997.
ALSO...
That's against Sony's ToS. Just pony up the $10. It's well worth it.
No it's not.

Seriously, I think you might take this entire thing a little to seriously. In my original post, I specifically said that I wasn't sure if this was "technically" a deal. But the response has been good, and the mods thus far have let it stand. Of course, your argument is flawed...therefore any universal price drop should be in a discussion thread and not a deals thread, as these games are not permanently cheaper. You could even say penny guide threads shouldn't be here, they are permanent price drops and therefore do not qualify as deals under a good chunk of your definition.

A lot of people didn't realize the game was out nor that it was ONLY 10 bucks. I think, maybe, you can let this slide and move on to other more obvious non-deals to police.
