Final Fantasy XIII - Gen. Discussion & Info

I just had to. It seemed appropriate and of course are not serious in any way, shape, or form.
"How superior is the PlayStation version of Final Fantasy XIII? Clearly superior, incredibly superior, or unbelievably superior?"
Clearly the Playstation version is clearly superior. I mean anybody who has clearly seen a clear side by side comparison between the two versions would be able to clearly see that the PlayStation version is clearly superior. It doesn't get more clear than that... or does it?
"Would buying the 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII just make someone an idiot, or would it actually cause them to contract a terminal disease?"
If the person who bought the 360 version of Final Fantasy has a Playstation 3, then clearly they are an idiot. And as we all know, idiots tend to contract terminal diseases more easily, so it's clear that statistics would show that idiots who bought Final Fantasy on the 360 would contract a terminal disease.
"Why is DVD, a relic technology from the dark ages of famine and misery, being allowed to taint anyone's experience of Final Fantasy XIII?"
Linus Torvalds would be appalled, you fiend!

Some of the dev team is in the States this week to talk to media. I have a morning appt with them tomorrow. If any of you have questions, let me know and I'll try to fit them in. The guests are:

Yoshinori Kitase, Producer
Motomu Toriyama, Director
Yuji Abe, Battle Director

I would personally want to ask the team what influence, if any, the tumultuous development process and polarizing reception of Final Fantasy XII had on their game. XIII was probably always going to be more of a descendant of X and X-2, given the team members' histories, but I wonder if there were any elements of XII that they deliberately incorporated or avoided.

I actually managed to get part of your question in. The coverage embargo lifts at 9AM PST on Friday so I'll post my interview then.

Something interesting in this post from Major Nelson about the FF13 Xbox bundle:

The Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle will release starting March 9 for $399, and include a 250GB Hard Drive, two Wireless Controllers, exclusive downloadable content and a Standard Edition copy of the game.

Seems weird to go out of your way to say "standard edition" if it's the only edition available.

Figure before people start going crazy, I should say that the "exclusive content" is Avatar-related stuff (confirmed via Kotaku apparently), so no extra quests or bosses or whatever.

Europe is releasing at the same time and they get an LE where as we in the US don't...perhaps he's just trying to make sure he covers his ass?

That just seems weird. No Microsoft hate intended (I'm a 360 owner who is getting the game for 360), but if you didn't have a 360 yet, you either already have a PS3, or you're specifically waiting on FF13 to make the next gen plunge... wouldn't you go for the PS3 version?

Or I guess the target could be existing 360 players who like Final Fantasy and have $400 to burn on a collector's item... in which case, can I switch lives with one of those people?

Good point. I sold my 360 a while back because I really needed the money to buy books for college. That being said, I do not see this bundle selling much so hopefully it can be discounted shortly after its release. I have a ps3 and already preordered FF13 but if this bundle drops its price to 300 I might have to buy it.

Went to gamestop today and they had a 36-page official mini strategy guide as the pre-order bonus. Just a preview to convince you to buy the full version (included a 10% off coupon if guide and game were bought together {I thought that was always gamestops deal?!?})

The CE Guide costs less at Amazon than the standard edition does at Gamestop.

I saw this over at NeoGaf. Thought it was funny, so I'm posting it here.

EDIT: Bandwidth LOL

Yeah, I know. I pre-ordered both from amazon myself. Was just saying this is the only preorder bonus I think we've seen yet and it's a pretty shitty one.

Or perhaps if they choose to go the same route as FFXII and put one of the best weapons in the game as a big " fuck you " to all those without a guide, avoiding four random treasures that nobody outside guide holders would know about.

...Damn I'm still way too bitter about that :p

Anyway, I'm trying to get the guide in my Gold Box. I could handle paying $18 or so for the guide I suppose. I do have to say that I like the minimalist approach of the cover.

@Nirron
nah bro I would be bitter too. Never played the game but i know you're talking about the zodiac spear. ridiculous of $quare to do that.

That spear made the game easy mode lol. You could one-shot everything, even a few mini-bosses. So glad I'm a cheater and read up about these things first!

haha I just read about it and that's a ridiculous way to get a weapon. who would even think of that to get it?

It doesn't sound like there's anything like that in this game though.
shocking news. when ps3 is the lead platform, the game looks better than its ported 360 version:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=19857881&postcount=12055
- 1024x576 2x MSAA on 360
- 1280x720 2x MSAA on PS3
- lower quality textures on 360
- graphic details cut out on 360
- 720P FMV on 360 vs 1080P on PS3
- compressed audio on 360, 7.1 uncompressed on PS3
- 3 DVD Disc swapping on 360, 1 scratch resistant PS3 Bluray

You already knew what you were getting into if you wanted the 360 version... Is this news?

This trend of "next-gen" games running at sub 720p resolutions is fucking annoying though, and FFXIII isn't the first game to do this.

hmmmm, i guess i should pre-order it at amazon...but no idea what to do with that $10 giftcard after I get it....i dont buy games much at full price (usually used)
Only the fanboys & girls truly thought FFXIII on the 360 would look just as good as the PS3 version...
Other than possibly being a FF fanboy (I'll likely be picking it up and completing on both platforms) that was the whole basis of the Crystal Tools engine, no? To port a reasonable facsimile of the game to another platform? Obviously FF13 on the Wii (lawl) wouldn't look nearly as good, but the graphical capacity between 360/PS3 isn't astoundingly different. Sheer processor horsepower is a completely different story however. :)

Considering FFXIII started out on the PS2 and then jumped to the PS3 when that was announced, this title has ALWAYS been in development for the PS3...the same cannot be said for the Xbox 360.

Indeed, that's why I can believe the slight bump in resolution with the PS3 version. Had the game been given equal development time for both platforms, I don't think there would have been nearly as much of a difference at the expense of possibly an extra dvd worth of data for the 360 to make up for the larger textures, etc.

I hope the difference in the last screen couple is because of gamma settings on the console/in the settings... the 360 version looks sort of washed out.

Who cares as long as you have PS3.

I'm glad the shoe is on the other foot - now we can all come together and agree that the bickering and pissiness of gamers in regard to PS3 or 360 as superior versions is an exercise in frighteningly compulsive stupidity. And stop bitching about smoke particles, or missing foliage, and just enjoy the damned game.
It's the bizarro world version.
Pretty much the exact same situation as with past multi games but in reverse.
360 version got GTA'd
Am I only the one who sees the face in the last picture?
360 version superior am confirmed!
360 version is still superior because it has Xbox Live, achievements and a better controller. PS3 fans can suck it lolerskatez, amirite.
Even if your post was sarcastic, I still feel compelled to correct you...
 1. Xbox Live will have nothing to do with this game since there is no multiplayer (TMK)
 2. I'd argue the controllers are equal considering every previous FF game on a console has been played with a PS controller (VII-XII at least)

Trophies are better than achievements and have fun messing up your commands mid-battle when 360's shitty dpad fails on you.

Trust me, he is clearly being sarcastic. He's just throwing out excuses that some xbots might be throwing out.

Yup, picked that up Saturday when I finished my preorder. I was in gamestop with my buddy and he was looking through the dungeons and saying, 'wow, a nice straight line' and goes on a rant about how the game is so linear.

This is nothing new for FF, no matter how many times you play FF7, aeris still dies no matter what you do (uh-oh spoiler alert ;)) To be a great game doesn't mean it has to be non-linear, look at Uncharted 2. Sorry for the rant, but all the people bitching about it being linear is ridiculous. Squenix wants to tell a story and I can't wait. Getting an HD monitor tomorrow for my ps3 and can't wait to play this awesome game on it! :bouncy:

Preordered this for PS3 with my credit from the 50% trade bonus. Not really especiialy excited for it or anything, but I'm sure I will get hooked once I start.

Wish there was a cooler preorder bonus than a sample of the strategy guide though
