Kudos to Disney. It took a while, but they've corrected the framing error in POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl that resulted in 7 minutes of people with no heads. The title has been reframed, re-transferred, and is being pressed now.

Corrected discs should start showing up on retailer shelves by the end of the year, and they'll also be offering a phone-in exchange for those of us who have the "bad" version.
Yeah, for a while there, I thought nothing would be done.

All started by one little poster at AVS.
Changing the world. Hehe.
BD spanks HD DVD once again Thanksgiving week.

Yeah I totally posted that last night. :)

But honestly, what did you expect, with release of:

Hairspray
Die Hard
Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Die Hard with a Vengence
The Die Hard Collection
Live Free or Die Hard
Pathfinder
Rescue Dawn
Badder Santa: The Unrated Version
The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

Plus residuals from Spider-Man 3 and Ratatouille

Against:

Tremors
Star Trek: TOS

and residuals from Shrek 3?

This is not exactly an average week. :)

Sorry, I was in class last night, and didn't bring it over. I got it from the prediction thread on AVS. Source was the hollywood insider.
100k? Really? Boy, oh, boy, my finger is not on the pulse of the American people.
Assuming you meant it shouldn't have sold that well, reserve judgement on yourself for just a bit. :) Reports are coming from an insdier that the LFODH numbers are, shall we say, "slightly exaggerated". We'll have to wait and see if it's an "error" of the magnitude of Casino Royale or Transformers, but it appears as if Fox reported shipped numbers as sellthrough numbers.

But FWIW, I enjoyed it. Don't own it yet, but maybe I'll get the boxset for christmas..... :)
It breaks my heart to think that people bought The Santa Clause 3.

That's the price of freedom, I suppose.
lol, i am one that is guilty of buying a copy on BD...but i swear it was because my wife insisted on it
^lol at a good amount of those being pushed back or cancelled
You mean 1 of them?

I find it interesting that they're using the old Sony cover of Robocop from the cancelled BD and not the Fox version.

I want the Sony version, the color is horrible in the Fox version.

You know I kind of started to really compile a list of movies I wanted to buy, but then I realized why re buy movies? Are they really that much more enjoyable in High Def? I am probably going against what those of you in this thread think, but I rarely will re watch a movie 2-3 times, ever. I just don't have the time, or maybe the attention, I am typically on to something new.

I do once in a while enjoy watching a movie again with new people, but again that doesn't happen a ton.

So are most people here just re watchers of movies, or just better visual nuts?

Damn that Independence Day cover is horrid as well as Robocop. Jeleous of ID4, Fight Club, & Simpsons Movie...hope that they show up somewhere overseas for HD DVD so I can import :D

I'm that way snake.
But sometimes I get an urge to pull something out, or share with someone.
And I like having it there.

Some of the movies I've bought in HD though are simply for the visual and audio treat.
It's made movies fun again, as guyver once said.
I saw Crank (and new Fantastic Four) on HD DVD over in Germany.
I'm going to order Children of Men BD soon as well.
Yeah, I'm going to pick those up in December. As far as your question Snake...Um I do tend to buy a lot of movies but I don't have the time I want to watch them, I used to watch atleast 3 movies every weekend but since my son was born, I'm lucky if I watch one every weekend. I'm sure things will change as he grows up though, and I'm not buying at full price (except imports) so Its not a total loss.

Independence Day is pushed back, Fight Club is MIA, and I think Ghostbusters is MIA

That's a good amount, especially if they're advertising them

But I wish Fight Club was on HD DVD

Cool guys, thanks for the replies.

I am going through my 200+ SD DVD's and am thinking 'what a waste'. I mean they will only fetch a few bucks each, after I put work into dumping them. Then there are others that we want, and I probably wont watch enough to rebuy. In those cases I am just keeping the SD versions. The only thing that is totally NOT acceptable is the Full Screen versions of a few DVD's I didnt even realize we owned. I mean I stopped buying full screen a LONG time ago, yet a few the wife picked up are full screeners.... i.e. a few LOTR, etc.

I see 2008 under their covers.
That's fine with me.

Heh, my uncle dumped his unwanted DVDs on me, and one happened to be the GI Joe animated movie, which seems to fetch a pretty penny compared to what most DVD's are worth now.

I'm just glad I've only bought around 10 DVD's up til now (going back like 3-4 years), and none of them have yet to be released on BD, so I'm cool wit dat ;)

Does or has anyone ever used the first gen HDTV's? I'm talking about the CRT HDTV's, the Big Momma's before Slim Shady came out. I find the picture to come out a lot crisper/sharper compared to most LCDs, Plasmas, DLPs.
The only downfall is that their pretty damn heavy.

So looking into the future, what can we possibly replace HDM with? Will it be 3D HDM...4D with smell-o-vision? I know its too early but curious as to what will replace HDM a few years from now.
CRTs have the best picture, even now.
Only a couple companies still produce them.
I don't know, I had a Toshiba 1080i CRT and my new Sony 1080p LCD looks a lot better. Hell, it loosk better than my Dad's 57 inch projection TV!

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1018/piratesofthecaribbeanatworldsend.html

And the New Pirates only gets 4 star rating, kind of weird how the newest one has the worse video transfer....

4000p prints.

Twice the resolution of BD and HD DVD.

It's hard to imagine it can get better.
But that's what I thought about DVD.

Still have a Philips 1080i CRT. Sucks arse because of the major overscan issues it has. But I don't want to have to pay $200+ for a repairman to come and calibrate it for me. I've heard there are ways to access the service menu using the factory remote, but I don't want to fuck it up.

Yeah, I have a Samsung 32" 720p/1080i Slim CRT looks great but the overscan pissess me off. I too thought about messing with the service menu but I had a previous Phillips 30" that I messed with and I could not get it right. My Samsung is heavy as fuck too!

I was watching my James Bond movies and boy does it make me mad that MGM/Fox suck so much dick when it comes to actually releasing movies in HD.

Those two have massive libraries and if they even released movies at 50% the amount Universal does, they would swamp HD-DVD when it comes to selection. Hell, even I would be horribly tempted if they actually got on the ball.

Don't remind me.

Is that what the new HD DVD fan tactic is? To remind us of what could have been!?!?!?

Because it's working. Christ I want classic Bond in BD.

;)

Not a fan tactic at all. I just bought all of the Bond movies since :bomb:fuckMGMBLU:bomb: and I was pretty amazed at the PQ on Dr. No.

Of course the fine detail isn't there but it, hands down, has to be one of the best looking DVD I have ever seen.

Then I started to thinking about how different the format war would be if Fox/MGM/Disney actually got off their ass and release some of the HD transfers they have in the vault.

Disney is better than the other two, but Fox and MGM definitely have cold feet with regards to catalog titles.

It's a catch-22, of course, as a lack of a robust back catalog certainly has some impact in preventing further adoption of either format, even if individual catalog titles wouldn't sell very well at the moment.

I'm skeptic about buying any back catalog HDDVD or BR, if the past has been any indication, the biggest catalog movies are gonna end up with multiple disc special editions for about the same as the premium we're paying today

Personally I'd like to see SED's happen but if they don't FED's might be close to that or CRT's either. FED stands for "Field Emissions Display" and it sounds promising in terms of replicating the picture experience that CRT offers.

SED"s are great, problem is only Canon can work with them and they aren't experienced with TV's. Which kind of sucks because they are awesome.

Well the nice thing about our current predicament is that there are only 3 real things they can double dip on.

1) Re-releasing new transfers to replace shitty one or releasing the Director's Cut.
2) New extras or extras remastered in HD
3) Adding lossless audio

Thankfully it's easy enough to avoid number one and the other two aren't important enough for me to double dip.
independence day is still coming out in europe apparently
mmm, this irony is delicious!

WHO CARES? This question will be relevant in 3-5 years when The HD movies have more than a 1% hold on the market. Personally, i think Blu-Ray will win with it's extra capacity. I've read a review that gave HD-DVD better picture quality though. how miniscule? who knows. I hope HD-DVD wins though, since i have a 360, but am willing to buy a blu-ray player if that format dominates, they'll be $100 by then...:D

I saw the new BR display at Costco today. It featured a PS3 playing Spider-Man 3 on a 46" Sony Bravia and a 7.1 surround sound system. It looked pretty good, there was noticeable lack of sharpness and the colors were sort of saturated. I'm guessing the LCD needed to be calibrated. The whole display looked very impressive: there was even a small crowd of three to five people taking a gander. Personally, I'm pulling for the HD format since it's cheaper and I already own the HD add-on for the Xbox. Having said that, I really hope that HD DVD gets its act together and creates similar displays in the future.

You know, before I bought a PS3 I supported HD DVD exclusively. Right after I bought a PS3 I was mostly neutral but now I'm moving more toward Blu Ray. Between the scratch coating and the higher disc size, I'm really starting to feel like its starting to show as the more technologically advanced format offering some definite benefits over HD DVD. Don't get me wrong, they rushed Blu Ray out the door without a doubt but as more time goes on, it seems as if Blu Ray's advantages are getting to be more important and beneficial.

All in all though, I'm glad I own both formats so that I know I can get any movie I want that releases in high definition.

As me and Dpatel have said, HD-DVD's advantages over Blu-ray will eventually cease to exist. Eventually Blu-ray will be just as cheap, will have all studio support (if they outright win) and will have some sort of interactivity. However, HD-DVD will never have 25gb per layer nor will they have hard coating. This is why I support Blu-ray.

I am shocked at the amount of Blu ray commercials that NBC shows in the morning. I would think since NBC releases are Universal, hence HD DVD exclusive, they would have more HD DVD ads.

Everyone of them also mentions at the end that Wal-mart has the low prices for Blu ray movies. Is it a marketing combination of the BDA and Walmart?

Im in the camp that I dont rebuy movies as I see no point in it.
I just rent blu-ray and hd-dvd because I see it being stupid to buy, when I watch once and then they just sit there.
