FW 1.8 out now on Network update!

So the old PSX demo I tested doesn't show up.
My tv says it doesn't get a signal, but I do get the sound from my receiver.

The game is playing, just nothing showing up on the screen..... I'll try a PS2 game.

FFXII looks nice ^___^; I'm done testing game for now going to watch DVD. Damn the best firmware update ever. BTW, all my test is done by upscale games and dvds to 1080p.
I dont see the difference in normal vs. full screen though, maybe because my tv is widescreen but i get the same view for most games I have tried, anyone else know the difference
I think it depends on the game. For me, "normal" mode makes MGS3 4:3 and ugly. Fullscreen makes it widescreen.

DMC3 looks so much better with this update! Nice. I'm excited to try a game like Okami but I haven't even opened it yet. Too many games and not enough time.

I am underwhelmed

1st DVD upscaling

It's ok about what I thought it would be I tested Spiderman 2 Superbit and The Fifth Element. First a good thing you can see an improvement and easily. When the dvds where playing I paused it and went to the sub menu you know the one that look like a HUD. There is an option that lets you to adjust the scaling on the fly I turned it off looked ok like a DVD on a playstation, changed it to normal nice improvement, changed it to double looked nice but it letter boxed the movie on double so I changed it back to normal. I can say that I will be watching all my SD DVD's on the PS3 now.

2nd PS1 Scaling

Really what did we expect Final Fantasy VII PS3 Tech Demo, I have the ps/ps2 scaler on Full screen I will get into this more in just a moment. I watched the openings of FF VII all I can say is pixels pixels pixels this game is and was meant for 4:3 on a 480I 19 - 32in CRT . I cant see me wanting to spend time playing a PS1 game on here I would rather rip to my PSP or play on my PS1 I have hooked up on a old TV. It looks better than before but there is only so much that you can do.

3rd PS2 Scaling

Back to the "fullscreen" I found something that makes me angry ok 2 things XMB needs to be made available in game so I can pause make a change then go back but oh no but lets hope for that in 2.0. 2nd if the game has progressive mode do not change into it I used 2 games SoC and GOWII. First up was SoC I went into the XMB and changed the ps/ps2 scaler to normal then started SoC changed the options to 16:9 and Progressive looked no better than my PS2. Checked my TV it was showing 480p 16:9 went back changed it to 16:9 and Progressive off, this changed the screen back to 4:3 but the game looked better really clean and smooth TV was showing 1080i but 4:3 but it looked Good. Back to the XMB changed it to Full screen and this pisses me off now I have the squashed effect of a 4:3 getting stretched out however game looks nice TV shows 1080i 16:9. Same thing with GoWII as long has you dont change it to Progressive mode the PS3 scales it well but now you have to decided if you want it stretched or 4:3.

All and all I'm a tad underwhelmed with the update. If I can or Sony can fix this issue I have above the PS2 games will get a new life on my PS3 but its getting late I will miss with it more tomorrow.

I get weird interlacing issues with 1080i hopefully it will upscale to 720p If anyone knows how to get a stream from windows professional or have it recognize that your ps3 is on the drive someone speak up :D
This update should allow nullriver to make a product like they've got for the 360 to stream iTunes to the PS3. They make Connect360 and it's a decent application. With the DLNA stuff, it should be a piece of cake for them.
I liked that program quite a bit, until my custom router firmware (dd-wrt) broke that functionality... (should've read the FAQ on their site... heh.)

Just an FYI to aspiring router hackers (mainly Linksys WRT56G users)... who might be using Connect360. :)
so how do you stream music over a PC or is only specific device types?
I'm curious as to how I can stream my music from my PC to the PS3, haven't tried much yet but I'd like to see an explanation.
Are any CAG's here having problems with PS2 games?

Look here at a thread I started:
http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/gen...topic=35574944

- No Full Screen upscaling
- GoW2 "Yes" on Progressive KICKS IT BACK to 480p

More issues are starting to pop up as well.
See my post a few post up
Re: GoW2 and stretching. Turn on widescreen in the game's options.
Will not work I tried on SoC and GoW 2 unless you tell it progresive it will stay 4:3

i'm confused...you can do 1080i in 4:3 right? and this works over component as well? (my ps3 is packed up right now)

Check your t.v.'s settings for aspect ratios. I know mine has options for "normal" "fullscreen", etc. If you've got your 4:3 games squishing when using the normal setting on the PS3, maybe your t.v. is causing the squishing and not the PS3. I'm pretty sure that's what's happening on mine.

Just to clarify, the DVD upscaling does 720p and 1080i both, I just checked on my TV, to me I can't tell the diff. between 720p and 1080i (for testing I used Sopranos DVD's, that is what I am watching now :p)

Boy, the update is really crawling along on mine.

Been downloading for 5 minutes and still at 0%.

I'll probably give it a go tomorrow.

I have 1080p, HDMI, 16:9 all setup, and it won't give me Fullscreen support. I can't even delete the update and try to re-download it. Jeez.

HERE IS A POSSIBLE FIX:

When hitting Full Screen on the Game Upscaler, when it goes blank, hit Left then the X button, and it should be in Full Screen when it comes back.
Shadow of C is full screen 1080i on mine. Check your TV's settings?
I know its not the TV with me, because if I change the Game say SoC to Pro Scan and 16:9 its 480p 16:9 change it out of pro scan no mater what it returns back to 4:3 same with GoW II . But If I set the ps/ps2 scaling to Full screen I get 1080i in "16:9" but its squashed a bit you can tell my looking at the loading circle at the bottom of the screen It becomes an oval.

Lets make sure we are all on the same page when you guys say full screen you mean 16:9 correct? Technically Full is 4:3 and 16:9 is wide think Full screen DVD
Full Screen is 16:9. It works people. It works. A guy in the thread I mentioned earlier figured it out.
no it isn't. full screen is 4:3.

According to the PS3:

- Normal = 4:3
- Fullscreen = 16:9

That's their definition, not mine. I guess by fullscreen they mean full "HD" screen.

that explains it (I haven't actually hooked mine up yet.)

so does this work over component too?

How to get Streaming media to work with Windows Media Player 11 (from PS forums):

1. Click on the arrow under the Library ( from Windows media Player)
2. Click More Options
3. Library
4. Configure Sharing
5. Check Share my Media
6. You should see under share my media an icon ( Unknow device) that's your PS3
7. Click on it and allow.
then click ok.

that's all

Could someone test blu-ray movies plz. Some said blu-ray movies can display 720P now. ^__^ please check it

It moved the PS3 from a 5-6/10 in my book to a 7-8/10. The games look absolutely amazing (PS2 at least). Time to go check some...ugh...32 bit...stuff. I'm not looking forward to it.

I have pirates of the caribbean running right now in 720P, so, this is confirmed, BLU RAY DISCS CAN run in 720p now :)

Hmm, for some reason my PS3 isn't showing up in WMP. I have my 360 set up to share, and it shows up fine. Anyone else experiencing this?

looks like Blu Ray is running in 720p my display says its playing at 24 Mbps so I am guessing that is 720p ?

My tv supports 1080i and 720p but when I enable 1080i it freaks out on my TV and flickers all crazy like. Any clues guys?

From GAF, via AVSFORUM.

And remember people the best results come from larger screens, and 1080P, yes P.

I have just completed the HQV tests on the PS3 on firmware 1.8. The good news is that the PS3 now passes ALL the tests on the DVD, cadence, interlacing, artifacting. The output is clearly superior over my Denon 3930CI DVD player. The PS3 extracts more detail from standard DVDs over anything else I have seen.
For those of you that dont know... The Denon 3930CI is probably the one of the most expensive and best upscaling DVD players out there.

Don't forget about the PS/PS2 memory card switching stuff. For me, that's good since I have a PS2 and my bro has this PS3. I'm using the PS3 now, but when I'm done, I'm switching my saves back to my PS2 card. Nice feature Sony.

Anyone know if there is any reason why I should allow my PS3 to display 1080i? I was wondering if others with 480i/p, 720p, 1080i sets are doing. Are you setting your max resolution on the PS3 now to 720P? Thats what I have mine as now...

To be honest though I can't tell a diff on a Blu Ray movie from 1080i to 720p, can you guys?

thanks, I might get another PS3 just for DVD and Blu-ray , maybe after price drop lol
This update finally added something really nice for the videophiles out there.

1080p/24 support.
Yeah, I noticed that while messing around in the menus. I was wondering if it had always been there.

Has the RGB full-range setting for HDMI always been there? Adjusting it makes my picture even better.

Edit: Checked AVS on the RGB thing and that's apparently just been added as well. Great feature, you all should check it out.

This update also fixed a number of other things.

Various BT stuff with headsets.
Couple features like the full range color HDMI option fixes out the washed out colors in the corners of some tvs.
Don't know what the super white option does.

Also, the HDCP issues with Westinghouse and JVC TVs are GONE.

Sony done good.

I'll give credit to Sony....it looks like they finally got one right.

Pics are posted in the supporting thread in the PS3 forum.

After tinkering....I've come to one glaring conclusion: They need to remake FFVII for the PS3....badly.

Even more:

Another fix unmentioned is that Dolby Pro Logic PCM audio through HDMI is being outputted correctly now even when you have all the audio settings chosen. Before it would always output as stereo even it was Dolby Pro Logic. Now at least from my preliminary tests it outputs Pro-logic correctly through PCM.

oh hoho seems like there's much to play around in this update
gonna check out the bluetooth stuff. maybe GASP They fixed the Bluetooth interference problems~!? OMGZOMZO!!?
And in case anyone is still wondering: No, this update does not fix the scaling issue with 720p PS3 games.
This is true.

But it did fix my weird resolution glitch with the Home BETA.
It would only display in 480p before, now it looks MUCH improved at 720p.

Never understood that problem.

only one more update to go... playing music in games! almost there! I just tested out Replacement Killers... nice improvement.
