Game of Thrones discussion thread - Season 5 debuts April 12th

Watched it on my PC, and I had a couple of moments when it degraded in quality, though it was certainly watchable. It might have been 720p at best, though it didn't hiccup except for a couple of times when it degraded, continued and then went back up in quality.

The special features was a nice touch on the sidebar.

In regards to the episode, looks like it'll be a long wait for Ep #8. I'll certainly rewatch it when it's on again on Sunday in HD, just to go back and see if there were items I missed the first time around.

epsidoe 7 was amazing so many interesting things happening. that
fireside chat was crazy a very cool speech and kinda funny too since if robert had listened and left the girl alone they wouldnt be facing an epic ass raping on horseback.

i knew the ending was coming the guys obsessed with his wife and corrupt as shit but i can see robetrs other brother coming in to save his ass.
now im screwed waiting 2 weeks for a new ep but who knows maybe they will toss up 8 early too.

This statement is what I was worried about. I think I'll just wait until the episode airs on Sunday.

Also, take into consideration the risk of someone spoiling a major upcoming plot twist(s) or not between now and then.

;)

Not a huge concern for those of us who've read the book. ;)

But of course the wait is also not much of a concern for those who've read the books since you already know what happens anyway.

So both spoilers and the wait really should only matter to people who haven't read the books.

Well the wait matters to me more since most of the other shows I watch have ended for the season or are ending, so GoT is one of the few shows I have to look forward to each week now. :D
This statement is what I was worried about. Fair enough. I don't watch much TV in general aside from sports. :D I mainly just wait and netflix shows these days so I don't have to wait week to week.

Same here. I couldn't resist this time though. I remember back when I read these books, the first one in like 2000 or 2001, and saying "They need to make a TV show out of these, but HBO is the only one that could show some of this kind of content." I damn near shit myself when George announced on his blog that HBO bought the rights to the books.

But for shows like The Walking Dead, Dexter, etc. I just Tivo the entire season and watch it all in a marathon. The Wire is the only other show I couldn't wait to watch all in one go. I still think The Wire is superior to GoT, because the first season so far has had some odd pacing. But I suppose the book did too because the entire first book is really just setup and introduction to characters and motives.

Honestly, I think the pacing in the books as a whole is a bit odd. You'll have hundreds of pages of nothing much happening, then a whole bunch of crazy shit happens at once with little build up/foreshadowing before it. But that's a discussion for the book thread rather than here...

And then you have seemingly major events happening but only being relayed to the reader third-hand in otherwise unrelated chapters. It will be interesting how the show deals with that, or if we'll have a bunch of characters standing around talking and then one of them saying "oh yeah, a major battle happened over there, don't know if you heard." :D

Yeah, that frustrated me as well. I'd hope the show will actually show that kind of stuff rather than going with a narration cop-out like the books.

They already dealt with something like that.
Tywin Lannister ordering Ser Gregor to do some heinous shit and make it look like the Tullys were responsible.
I thought that scene was pretty great, as far as explaining an event well enough that it wasn't just as you said, something said in passing during a conversation.

Not really a spoiler, but to be on the safe side for those who haven't read the books:

Through book 3 she's not came together with any of the other major characters as she hasn't crossed the sea yet. Book 4 didn't cover her story at all (nor Bran or Jon) and focused on other characters and a bunch of new ones.

She should be back in Book 5 this summer, so we'll see what happens then!

ah i see. thanks. :D

I'm seriously impressed with the actors that play Jorah Mormont and Rob Stark. I like how Jorah still seems like the most badass of the khalasar bunch and has never shown any aggression at all.

Damn, this show is so well done. Have the books on tap to read once I finish The Wise Man's Fear, but I almost don't want to read them and just let the show unfold instead.

Any of the readers care to weigh in? Read now or wait until the show (or at least the season) runs its course before opening the first book?

Read the books the series is good but the books are better

Agreed. And the series makes more sense if you've read the books as things only hinted at in the series are fleshed out more in the books as always.
Ha, those are pretty good. If you read the book, you get to see Ned's POV and understand his position. Basically, he is very honor bound and convinced that what is right will make might.

And if you know the back story behind the rebellion and the steps they took, they basically appealed to people's honor and sense of justice to set things right. He doesn't scheme like others do because he has no genuine interest in power. He's much like Robert in that regard, they just want very different things in life besides that.

The best question would be how much of a dullard you can make Ned out to be. His foolishness may be a result of him being a dullard, or it may just be the way he is raised to play the game of what is honorable rather than smart.

Lloyd portrayed Viserys excellently compared to my interpretation of him from the book. He's been one of my favorite performances along with Syrio and Ayra.

I think Dinklage has played Tyrion well, but I have a pretty high standard for what I expect out of one of the most cunning and entertaining characters of the series.

Bronn has been excellent too. His quip at the end of the battle was perfect, and Martin hadn't even written that. Reassures me that the scripts are in capable hands, even if I disagree with the way they've done some things.

As for next season, Martin has already seen some casting videos for some of the new roles. He hasn't seen any for Stannis, which is one of my most anticipated roles. I have high hopes for that role.
I didn't realize that Lloyd had played Will Scarlett on Robin Hood, i loved that show.

I had a few of these moments as well.

Grand Maester Pycelle (Julian Glover) = Donovan from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Also, I was re-watching Batman Begins the other day, and the random little kid who sees Batman in the Narrows is Joffrey Baratheon. :D

Psssh, that's nothing. I was happy to see Sardo Numspa getting some quality work.
I . . I . . . I . . I . . . want the knife . . . please.

I've watched up to the 5th episode so far and all I have to say is LOL. This show is just like Nip/Tuck. It makes me laugh and is as enjoyable as all the crazy shit they both have. Except Game of Thrones is set in ancient europe, amirite? hahaha. quite enjoyable, loving it :)

The show's (and book's) events are inspired by the War of the Roses from European history, but it is set in a fictional world called Westeros.

Regardless of if you were or not, the fact that the War of Roses inspired the story is interesting.

Great episode as usual.. Though does anyone else feel like they're starting to rush a bit towards the end? There's a lot of material left to cover and only two episodes in which to cover it. I wish they were going 12..

I wouldn't rule it out, especially if they expect to fit books 2 and 3 into one season each.

Book 3 might get split up into two seasons. It's too big to trim down into 10 episodes without losing a lot of important shit. Book 1, so far, has translated very well to screen. HBO took minimal liberties, almost everything I can think of has been shown, even some minor stuff I didn't expect.

based on? have they talked about this at all? id be very surprised if they split any of the books up, with the exception of 4/5 which might weave together.

It would not, however, surprise me if they extended past 10 episodes. There's no way they can fit book 3 into 10 episodes without making significant cuts.

I'd rather they extended the seasons. Go to 12 or 13 episodes. More is better! Plus HBO could fuck over consumers for an extra $10-15 on the box sets by having to toss in another BD-ROM.

Is this series actually any good? From what I see/read about on different boards it's mainly a sex fest, loads of nudity, and no real mention of any Fantasy story.....

You weren't misinformed that there is lots of sex and nudity, but the show is fantastic. It's certainly low fantasy (for the most part), but it's amazingly well done.
