In an interview Martin said he wanted book 3 to be 2 seasons, but of course he doesn't get to make that decision.

Its hard to imagine this show being on for 8 or more seasons. Its also alot to ask of your audience in terms and sticking with it.

If the show continues to be a hit, and more importantly continues to be financially viable, he may well get his wish. Assuming the ultimate goal is to do the whole series (certainly no guarantee) there is conceivably going to be a point where the show catches up to the books, if Martin keeps his current pace. They may end up splitting both books 3, 4, and 5 (though I suspect 4 and 5 will need to be intertwined) into separate seasons while they wait on 6. That's a long way off of course, and for all we know the show will never get there.

Maybe I should watch it again. I do seem to remember what you're probably getting at, but I thought that was the previous episode.

edit- And Littlefinger may have the most awesome job in all the series. He's practically a medieval porn director.
 
The numbers for Game of Thrones episode 1.8 averaged 2.7 million viewers, which is up 22% since the series began back in April. Add to that people who watched later, then the overall numbers for the night is 3.6 million viewers. Now that is good news to hear.

I just watched the preview for the next episode on HBO GO, it looks awesome, should be a great episode.
 
Okay I kinda saw what was coming, but what the FUKC. Sell out everything you believe in and you still get screwed.

At least they're establishing early on that you shouldn't get attached to any character. As long as Tyrion doesn't go I won't be totally upset.

Certainly a recurring theme.

We also have our answer on whether the show would follow the book's example and not show much of most of the major battles (or none at all). Can't say I'm surprised.. since Martin didn't write much for them, no need for them to budget for expensive battle scenes.

True Blood starts on the 26th, so there was only 10 episodes worth of time before it started, and HBO doesn't stagger series between ending and starting weeks.

Shame that it was only 10 weeks, as I think a full 13 week season would give them some more time to flesh things out a bit more. I guess since it was the first season, they weren't sure it would last the time of a 13 week season. Hopefully succeeding seasons will be 13 episodes long.

I wasn't prepared the way things were going but he got a punk death. His last moments were not knowing if his daughters would be spared was pretty fucked up. I'm really torn on continuing to watch the show now, simply because Sean Bean won't be in it anymore. They spent the last episode or two preparing us for his son to take the spotlight and follow in his footsteps, which was smart but I just feel like a part of the show died with him.

Also, the Khal Drogo subplot is starting to wear thin. I realize it's obviously going to be a major plot in season 2, but right now it's fairly boring and detracts from the real action. I'd liken it to watching a wrestling match (a lot of drama, no real payoff), really. From what it sounds like, can't really complain since they're just sticking to the source material.

Yeah I have to admit, without Sean Bean the show loses something for me. He was a major reason why I got interested in the show in the first place. Not saying I'll quit watching, but I am a little saddened to see him go.

Sean Bean is my favorite actor, but I'll certainly still be watching. Though since I've read the book I was prepared for him to die from the outset, I can definitely see how it would be a sucker punch for those who started watching for him. Ned's death really serves as the impetus for a lot of what follows though, so I encourage everyone to stick with it.

It didnt really leave anything out from the book so 10 episodes did work for this season and its not like they were going to cancel it midseason so it lasting wasnt really a factor. It does seem like cable shows are having less and less episodes to their seasons though.

Actually it was a factor. If you tell the producers to get it done in 10, you save yourself a lot of risk. These shows are expensive to make -- even though it's clearly awesome as we watch it, the HBO execs couldn't have known how good it is when greenlighting the season.

Has Camelot been cancelled yet?

Thats a different issue. He said maybe they were worried about it lasting 13 weeks. The cost is not the same thing.

But I dont see how they could have stretched the book out for 3 more episodes.

The first couple of episodes, especially the first one, had a lot coming out in a very quick timeframe, and two or three episodes might have made that easier to get everything in hand.

I think that since they'll have their first season under their belt and the show coming out on DVD / BD by the end of the year plus watchable on HBOGo immediately, it'll give them enough time to build up for Season 2 and beyond. I think anyone that made it through Season 1 will be hooked in for future seasons, especially with the 5th book on the way out shortly.

Well son-of-a-bitch. I just knew that little shit was gonna throw a fit, had just hoped (rather unsuccessfully, mind you) that Ned would be spared.

But why spare him? Ah, to stop a war. But that little inbred doesn't care. I'm just glad the Starks have Jamie in-hand now - I hope he gets what-for sooner rather than later. And that little inbred had better get the worst death ever.

I SO loved seeing Sean Bean in this, just glad looking back that Ned lasted as long as he did. Some love lost AND earned for the show, which I'm sure will be reflected in the books now that I've finished Patrick Rothfuss' The Wise Man's Fear and am now in the clear to start Book 1.

But son-of-a-bitch.

It already starting off somewhat slow. If they stretched that out people might have bailed.
 
Just read that Season 2 will also be 10 episodes. I'm a bit concerned they'll be able to fit everything in.. Book 3 definitely wouldn't be possible in 10 unless they made extremely substantial cuts.
 
I think the producers and HBO showed, in the little bit of GoT that I've seen, that they're perfectly capable of condensing the novels down to the small screen.

Say there's a buildup to a battle that was essential in the novels to understanding changes in a few characters. It's 60-80 pages in a book of 1000 pages, you don't have the space to follow that shit verbatim. Solution? Take the characters and a very rough outline of their conversation, and set it in a whorehouse.

Or maybe there's a lot of explication on court intrigue as seen through that chapter's POV. There's no way you can fit it in a given episode. Solution? Have character mumble of rough outline of intrigue while receiving a quick beej from a whore. You don't have to show the whole beej, fer crying out loud, a little chat just before and after the pop shot will serve.

Or maybe you're having a tough time fitting in that chapter where everyone gets herpes from whores. Wait, that'll fit, actually.

Point is, they can handle this. I'm interested in the adaptation of Book 3 precisely because I thought that volume was lacking a certain something. What's the word for it? Oh yeah. Whores, that's it. It needed more whores.

Also, I didn't realize that
Ser Jorah Mormont was the son of Lord Mormont at Castle Black, which explains why he made the commentary about his son dishonoring the family. Finding out that Master Aemon at Castle Black was the uncle of the Mad King and great-uncle to Daenerys was a bit of a WTF moment, which I'm sure wasn't for someone who read the books. I wasn't sure what Aemon said about his fathering being the first to rule in his line, though when I found a diagram of the Targareyn succession line, it was all cleared up.

This show is so engrossing & addicting, last night events really came out of left field for me (Never read the books), either 10,15, or even 20 episodes, one thing is for sure, I will be glued to my TV set ever step of the way.

Agreed. I don't think anyone who hasn't read the books is in a position to be pissed about it. I'm not saying that to sound elitist, after all I'm only now reading them for the first time myself. I do think it's a bit presumptuous for people who are new to the series to be like "durr, they ruined the show!", completely discounting the possibility that things could actually get better from here on out, which:
they do.
 
Killing off a major character is sometimes a great thing for a show. I remember watching the Wire
and when they killed of D'angelo, I was so used to seeing people coming back to life that I couldn't believe he was really dead. Made the show 1000x better.
