Game of Thrones discussion thread - Season 5 debuts April 12th

Having read all released books, I've had trouble getting into the show. However, last night, I watched Episode 1 from Season 2. Pretty good. Pacing is too quick for my liking and a lot of detail is lost, but the acting is top-notch and the setting is beautiful.

Yeah the quick pace of the show can be jarring. I really do wish they would have extended the season from the first one. So much happens in these books and Martin uses so much detail, they have to cut out a lot.

I've been slowly rereading FfC, and the Sansa chapters are interesting to me, dammit.

The joke's gonna be on all you motherfuckers when next book Sansa starts tearing shit up. You watch. She'll make Azor Ahai look like the punk he is/was/whatever/who gives a shit.

I just hope Littlefinger doesn't get hurt too badly. Still, though, he's a player, he knows the game.

I actually liked the Sansa chapters. The character doesn't bother me, knowing she's basically been branded "everybody's least favorite," but it's interesting to see her evolve into a potential "game of thrones" player from being completely naive at the start of the story, that's she's basically learning about the real world in the worst ways possible. And her POVs were where you got a lot of exposure to the more interesting secondary characters, like The Hound and Littlefinger.

I don't know, I felt his time with Arya humanized him a lot more. When it came to him quasi defending Sansa i felt it was because he (like others) knew Joff was an evil little shit. Sandor only tolerated him because he was King.

The Sansa chapters were fine. It was the Dornish and Iron Islands shit that I didn't care for in FFC. The saga already had too many characters and factions to keep up with IMO, so I wasn't thrilled to have even more and to have new PoVs in place of Tyrion, Jon, Bran etc.

Probably would have been less annoying if he kept books 4 and 5 chronological and just worked those PoVs in between all the existing characters more, rather than splitting it by character/area and having parts of book 5 take place during/before things that happened in book 4.

Yeah the Dornish stuff is the worst I think. the Iron Islands chapters are kind of annoying too, since Theon is the only one of them I give a damn about, and he's not in any of those chapters.

Exactly. Some of the stuff was interesting, but I just didn't care (and still don't care) about any of the new characters they introduced in that book.

Oh god. People defending Sansa chapters. It's too early to drink, assholes.

Dothog I expect it from, he likes Dorne and Dany chapters, probably wishes he could marry them, and have sweaty desert sex with a silver haired maiden all day long.

Actually that's not a bad idea. And it's MY idea, I said it first, go to hell Dothog, and take your crappy chapters with you that you love so much.

It's true, I liked the Dorne stuff AND the Iron Islands stuff. And the slowly progressing subplot with the maesters back at the Citadel, throw that in there. I'll have sweaty desert sex with them all.

My defense of the wrongly maligned stops at the later Dany chapters in DwD. Give it time, though, it'll be a while before I can re-read DwD and catalog the hundreds of arbitrary surnames invented by GRRM.

They would've hated me in Meeren, because I would've been that asshole that shoots the finger pistols of "I've forgotten your name" at everyone and gives them extemporaneous nicknames to get through it. Meeting Hizdar Lo Baqalaq, I'd have been all, "Hey, BIG GUY, lookit you! Ah, man, you look great, well done on lockin this one *gesture to Dany* down. If you get a chance, try the locusts! Seriously, great seeing you, dude."

Dany's acting is getting on my nerves and I'm not a huge fan of Snow's adventure anymore, though it seems to be finally getting somwhere. Otherwise everything has been awesome, I think I'll cry if Theon dies but I feel like that might be the season ender.

Such an epic payoff for the season. I'd have to say it even tops last season as the climax episode. I just hope they take this series to the end because I need to see it all before reading the books and spoil anything for myself.

this was the best episode of the season so far bigtime payoffs and as a bonus no whiny bitch whining about dragons. the imp is a fucking pimp.

This last episode...good gawd. Wildfire is both deadly and beautiful. Definitley best episode thus far. How will they top this off in the finale?

I don't recall there being much after the battle in the books. I'm predicting one of those slow finales, just wrapping up archs and then some huge cliffhanger.

Maybe the finale will BOOK SERIES SPOILER
have the climax be the victory feast where a certain someone suffers a boring death as opposed to the kind viewers would have preferred.

last night's episode was fantastic.

Please don't let the imp die!

That being said, could you guys who have read the book stop dropping spoilers in here? There's a book thread for the book stuff. iF you must, specify it TV Spoiler or Book Spoiler.

Even if you don't think it's that big of a deal on the statements you make, have a little courtesy on that front.

I don't come into this thread until I've seen the latest episode. But I don't need to know things like cool shit happens in the next city. That to me tells me nothing cool happens in Qarth and I don't need to know that right now.

Strells avatar also looks like Tommy Carchetti.

Next week? That would be all kinds of wrong. There is still at least a couple of important things that need to happen next week although I agree that I dont know how they end it that has the same kind of impact as dragons from last year.

Interesting fact the original plan for this episode was no battle at all and to have it all take place in the room with Sansa and Cersei. Boy would that have pissed people off.

The Cersei/Sansa bits were really well done, and usually I'd be a bit wary of a TV series attempting a battle scene. These guys obviously have the talent, though.

That's almost as bad as writing a book composed entirely of all the uninteresting characters.

Wow, what an amazing episode! I'm sure it will never happen, but Tyrion should be king!

I fully expect the wrap up story arcs end with huge cliffhanger finale at this point as well.
I was kind of disappointed that Bronn and Sandor didn't fight, that would have been interesting to see.
I think Bronn would have been dead. The series makes Bronn out to be much more than he was in the books. While the series makes The Hound look less. And, is it me, or is The Mountain skinnier now? When him and The Hound fought, Gregor was massive, but when Tywin turned Harrenhall over to Gregor, he was thin as hell. Seriously, he's just "tall" now, while Bronn looked like Tyrion standing in front of Sandor.

Its a different actor this season

No shit? That sucks. That guy who played him in season one tried so hard to get that role. I wonder if he walked away from it or got let go?

EDIT: I guess he left because of "scheduling conflicts with other projects."

So instead of standing over the ladder and throwing rocks, wouldnt it have been easier to just push the ladder over while they were climbing up it?
So instead of standing over the ladder and throwing rocks, wouldnt it have been easier to just push the ladder over while they were climbing up it?
Well, realistically you couldn't push it over with your hands. I suppose a simple trident like pole could easily do the trick. But then I would think people would be holding the ladders at the bottom.

This also distracts from the real reasoning. When you have large fucking rocks, wouldn't it be more satisfying to just ignore tactics and crush someone's head?

I was thinking the same thing. just push the ladder over. Even better, if they'd saved some of the wildfire they could have thrown that down and lit the bastards on fire as they walked up the ladders.

Bronn covered why they couldn't use wildfire for that. It's war, and people start panicking, and they'll drop the pots all over the place, and then light their own battlements on fire. So bad idea all around.

I thought the episode was okay. Some of the fight scenes were poorly produced in my opinion (the small space of the riverfront that just looked like a crappy beach). Bronn's character has been changed so dramatically it is frustrating. In the books, he was a behind the scenes character that helped Tyrion, but didn't have anything to do with the kingdom. I can't help, but not liking the changes they are making from the books.

I don't know how they are going to tie up the loose ends of A Clash of Kings with Jon Snow and Daenerys. That is a lot of stuff to cram into an hour episode. Danny still has to go thru House of the Undying and Jon Snow and Night's Watch need to deal with the wildings and wights. It would be so much better if it was a two hour episode. That way they don't have to rush things.
