[quote name='asheskitty']For me it's a distinction.
After playing something I liked, it's generally worth more than I paid, e.g. BL1 GOTY I paid $7.50 for, played 128 hours. It's worth more than the $7.50 I paid for it; the difference between what I paid and what it's worth is gained valued. If I knew I would have liked it so much, I'd have been happy paying more for it.
After playing something I discovered I didn't like, e.g. NFS: Shift, it's worth less to me. That difference between what I paid and what it's worth is lost value.
I can generally only guess at a game's value before buying it, so I have to factor in risk of not liking it. This pushes what I'll pay for it down, resulting in most games I like being worth more than what I paid.
Games with known issues/controversy, I'll only pay much less for, though they might turn out to be worth much more. I will pick NFS: MW (2012) when the price is right. The PC version has had some bad performance issues that kept me from shelling out $20 for it at Xmas. Similarly DA2 has had quite a bit of rage around it, but hasn't hit too cheap on it's own (Tony had some good total-DA packs, but already owning DA:OU wiped out the value for me).
Anyhow, that's the difference. I tend to be very precise with my language.

NFS: MW 2012 -> Oh, yeah - I'm waiting for NFS: MW 2012 to drop a bit in price. I was not happy to hear that MW 2012 doesn't really have much of a story, give characters to the drivers, or even the purposely hammy cut-scenes that made MW 2005 so awesome, in the first place.
NFS: Shift -> I actually liked it, but didn't play much of it. And, I even own Shift 2 - ain't began that. I think I had too many other games pop-up that I wound-up playing. Thanks for reminding me that I need to play some more Shift 1, sometime.
DA2 -> I thought it was certainly worth the $30 or so I spent on it. I made sure I didn't spend $60 on it, given the amount of controversy surrounding it. Then again - I very rarely pre-order or buy close after its release; and/or very rarely spend full-price or close to it.
Borderlands -> I loved Borderlands: GOTY Edition. Spent around $45 week of release for it at Retail; $20 for first Retail DLC Double Pack; and then bought Steam-version for $7.49 from Amazon just to get the last 2 DLC's. I just still ain't got around to buying BL2, though - in due time, I suppose.
