FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

I can't call, but it's $17.99 which puts it between $4-$8.
If you trade in 3 games, do you get the extra 50% plus the extra $10 for trading 3 games?
Absolutely, you should go there right now and do it.

the trade 3 for $10 does not stack with the 50%. Their pos will give you the best deal. For all the questions regarding the guaranteed $25 games the way it works is, whatever the base value of the game was, thats what the 50% applies to. For example if a game on that list has a normal tiv of $22.00 you would get 50% applied to the $22 and end up with $33. They do not bump it to $25 and then apply the 50% giving you $37.50. After the 50% promo ends, those games will just get bumped to $25.
Wth, I was in a rush since I had to get to work, but isn't the trade 3 get $10 and 50% supposed to stack?
No it isn't. If you read the OP or the 500 similiar questions you would know that too :bouncy:!

Lost Planet Colonies- $3 (no change)
Shadowrun- $1.50 (no change)
Fallout 3 OA/The Pitt DLC disk- $4 (down $3 from OP)

It only says that the 50% can't stack with the guaranteed $25. It just doesn't make sense to me why the bonus $10 wouldn't stack with the 50% if your trading 3 games in.

Gamestop has never been one to make multiple promos work together to give that much advantage to the customer.

Here are a few more TIV values from today:

Avatar: The Burning Earth (DS) - $3.00
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (DS) - $2.50
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party (Wii) - $4.75
WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2010 (PS3) - $11.50

Promos never stack, it's in the FAQ. I tagged that one in particular because up until the day it went live we were unsure as to how they were doing the promo to make it work. Depending upon how they implemented the promo, there was a remote possibility that the 50% would work. GameStop took the route that wouldn't let them stack, which makes sense for them to do.

CAG Cares and we're here to help. GameStop doesn't give a sh*t about you, they just want your money and your trade-ins so they can make SOOO MUUUCH MOOORE MONEYZ!!!

Please remember this people! Don't be afraid to ask the employee questions to make sure you're getting the right $$$ amounts for your trade-ins. I went in with a NSMB which I knew i should get $40 for and 3x 360 games that I knew I should get base values +$10 for, so when he told me that my total was $52.something I said "NUH, UH... ring them up separately, please." What'dya know?! When the +50% game was rung up with the 3/$10 games it just applied +50% to all 4. Granted, it was only a $6 difference that I would've missed out on, but hey, that covers CA tax for a new $59.99 game.
quick question- can one purchase a GS gift card w/ store credit?
yep, ive done it before

Actually, though, this particular promo (the guaranteed $25) can cause some confusion and I'm not even clear on it myself. For example, NSMB Wii is on the list. It's value was $25 anyway, so does this mean they apply the promo to make it $25 and you no longer get the $50 bonus? Did they lower the base value since a few days ago and then apply this promo? How does all that work?

Anyway, trades from 6/9:

:wii:
TNA Impact - $3

:360:
Super Street Fighter IV - $17
TNA Impact - $3
Viva Pinata - $3
Where The Wild Things Are - $4

:psp:
LocoRoco 2 - $3

:ds:
Overlord Minions - $1.75

Of course I did two transactions (one with SSFIV for 50% bonus and a total of $27.20, and the other 6 for the 3/$10 deal and a total of $39.53).

So, while we know how to take advantage of these promos for maximum effect, there are still regular people out there who are clueless (and stupid) about it and GS makes a great profit off of them despite the promos. What I witnessed today after I did my trades:

An 11 or 12 year-old kid comes in with a stack of PS3 and Wii games. I couldn't tell what the PS3 games were, but the Wii games were fairly high value: NSMB, SMG, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Party 8, etc... He had at least 3 PS3 games and 7 or 8 Wii games. He wants a $20 PSN card and the rest in cash. The clerk warns him that it will be considerably less in cash because of the promos which won't apply. So he rings it all up and informs him it would be $116 store credit or $60 cash. I'm not even sure the promos worked out for the best as I thought it would be more than $116 so he might have gotten even more with them grouped correctly (but I'm not entirely sure as I didn't see all the games).

So this is what the kid asks for: the PSN card and $40 cash back #-o... So, yeah, even though he spent 1/3 of the money in the same transaction, he took the cash route for nearly half the value. I mean, I was a kid once, and I don't think I would have been that stupid. I've seen plenty of other customers choose cash over credit but in those cases they often seemed a bit on the shady side so i can see why they might want cash. This kid had taken his own games in (his Mom was waiting in the car and had to come in to sign for the trade) and despite wanting a PSN card, it didn't even occur to him to, I dunno, maybe get six PSN cards instead of the 1 and just $40 cash back?

you shoulda bought the card from him for $75. i know, not realistic, but really, rage, lol. gamestop hopes you will be that stupid. for every cag there are tons of people that go in have no idea what is going on.

oh yes, you def have to watch them. the prototypical game store employee either doesnt care, is flat out stupid, or wants to get over on you. I ALWAYS say "ring them up and let me know what each is worth" and they usually are still reluctant to let me know..

So def ask before they finalize it, that should go w/o saying, but its important to note

I'm confused, does the 50% apply to ALL games traded? I have like 6-8 older games that will probably trade in for nothing that I'd like to get rid of so I could possibly afford a copy of Red Dead Redemption or Alan Wake... I am just confused as to if my entire trade in will be doubled or what.

base values from today. just needed to get rid of them due to the low tivs and no one at home wanted to play them anymore. ended up with 118.96 cause the guy took a dollar off for refub fee.

ahh... your math is off.
This promo is only giving you 50% more.
To double the trade in value, you need a 100% bonus.

Why does this even matter? I haven't even brought games into a Gamestop since it was Funcoland, I just recently became unemployed so I'm trying to save money. I have no clue how any promotion works for basically anyone, since I got my Xbox 360 for Christmas... Sorry I guess???

Pretty funny. However, I ask one thing, change your last piece like I did in your quote so the filter picks it up. It doesn't bother me but some people the f word does offend. Put the first four letters in lower-case and it takes care of it i'm pretty sure.

jp - I think a (super) mod could also update the smiley filter to include the uppercase fuck.

btw, GH Smash Hits PS3 = $8. ALmost forgot i traded today.

Just for clarification. When trading in the 3 for extra $10. Is that any game from the listed systems or is that any game other than the typical exclusions (old sport games, games with less than $1 value). Also will that ring up automatically? There also seems to be the extra 50% deal going on at the same time and I'm pretty sure the extra $10 will be the better deal in my case.

Thanks.

PROMO'S NEVER fuckING STACK!
:shame:
OK, smartass, so explain to me how it works with NSMB Wii, then. A few days ago when I traded one for base $25 + 50% bonus + Edge I got $40 for it. Are you saying that now, with this "$25 guaranteed" promo they either dropped the base of NSMB or are making this promo apply to it anyway even if it is still $25, thus negating the 50% bonus (since, as you say, promos never fucking stack)? Or is their computer smart enough to try both the 50% and "$25 guaranteed" promos and pick the best one? I guess that is theoretically what it should do, but I know, for example, it isn't doing the best thing when mixing the $10/3 and 50% promos... I don't plan on trading another NSMB, but I think this should be cleared up because even to a GS trade-in pro like me, this is confusing.

This, however, is more clearcut. First, yes. the promos are automatic - there's nothing the clerk can do to pick and choose or decline an automatic chain-wide promo like the $10/3 and 50% bonus. As stated at least a few times earlier in this thread, the Trade 3 promo is good for anything over $1, but less than $6.66. For anything over $6.66, use the 50% promo. And the way to "use" the promos to make sure you don't get screwed is to do 1 or 2 games at a time for the 50% bonus, and multiples of 3 for the $10/3 promo. For example, I traded 7 games today and did 6 on one transaction for the Trade 3 promo (and yes, I got $20 total bonus since I had two sets) and the one game I wanted the 50% bonus for on its own. YMMV if you mix them all up on which promo applies to which games, though the GS clerk will always tell you it picks the best one (and sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't).

argh, just bout to plat Nier, was rushing it cuz I wanted 22+60%.
If it dropped to 12, yeah, I may just keep it...
I'm hoping badcompany2 and NSMB stays high, I wanna trade those in asap.
Badcompany2 is a lagfest and if I can get 35ish for it, it sells new for 37 at target this week so the used price should drop soon. I could rebuy if I need it cheaper, lol.
Yep you'd get double the credit. $40 versus $18 with edge/cag16.

Yes it would. If you have a 10$ coupon plus edge it comes out to 17.XX. Then it trades in for 25 plus 60% (50% and EDGE) for a 40$ trade in. 23$ extra in trade in is really good.

Even Amazon is offering 29.50 for the trade. I might use my 20$ SMG2 credit to get another copy for about 7-8 bucks, and be done with GS and these coupons. I doubt they will make it here to trade in for the 50% but getting Amazon credit isnt bad either.

Or 20pre which takes off 20%. The total comes to 21.59 before tax. I paid 18.09 after tax using a 10$ coupon.
thank you guys :D. I'll definitely trade in my NSMB wii tomorrow.

anyone have suggestions on how I can get an override for the $25 guarantee and 50%? I'll either be heading to a NYC GS on Friday or Westchester/Yonkers during the weekend.

according to the OP, Super Mario Galaxy has a tiv of $12. so with the 50% and edge that would be $12*1.5*1.1 = $19.80. If I can get the $25 promo and 50% bonus to stack it would be $41.25 (which makes me wonder why some are saying $40 for NSMBW when it should be $41.25). or just $25*1.1 = $27.50. if I can't get the promos stacked then eBay it goes.

also not sure if I should trade in a wavebird, though the analog stick is messed up so the "neutral" position is kinda off. $6*1.1=$6.6 is not bad. also got some low tier games (aka last gen crap) that would be decent with the 50%.
OK, smartass, so explain to me how it works with NSMB Wii, then. A few days ago when I traded one for base $25 + 50% bonus + Edge I got $40 for it.
I think since the base of NSMBWii is 25, it's confusing. But let's say it was 20. I would think in that case, you'd get 20+10+2=32 and not the $25 guaranteed deal. Because it's better. If NSMBWii would just drop 50 cents tomorrow, we'd find out.

I believe 50% ends before guaranteed 25. So when the 50% ends, you take in your SMBWii with $20 base and it should give you $25+$2.

There is no way a GS manager is gonna give you $40 for SMG1.

Also 25 +12.5+2.5) = 40, not 41.25. You don't add % onto %. you always calculate based on the base.
jp - I think a (super) mod could also update the smiley filter to include the uppercase fuck.
Naw, that's got to be either Cheapy or John. So like, a super duper exclusive changes-clothes-in-phonebooth+12 stamina type mod has to do it.
Because the $25 guarantee isn't so much a promotion that adjusts after ringing in, it simply is the current trade in value on specific games.

ok I got how edge works now (base*.5+base*.1+base=total).

and why no, IF I can get an override (which I think some CAGs did since they got $40 for NSMBW when base was $22) I will get $40 for it.

So one last question I have is its a good idea to take advantage of the 50% IF the game has a high TIV (like NSMB)

and if games have a value less than $10, then take advantage of the $10 deal?
