Gears of War - General Discussion 2 - Re-release 6/24 w/Maps and Extras (No PC Stuff)

Another update is in the works and it will add new achievements:
Folks,

The next Gears of War update is coming along nicely. We don't have a release timeframe for it yet but I just wanted to let you know we're making significant progress. In addition to the previously mentioned plan to improve roadie run we're also going to have new achievements relating to Annex and the Hidden Fronts DLC. Of course no title update would be complete without more exploit squashing and the ever-popular "general housekeeping".

...

The title update is free and that's what contains the achievements. However some of the achievements are tied to things relating to playing the maps in the Hidden Fronts map pack which currently costs money but will be made free in a few months.
I'll still be waiting to play till the maps are free, hopefully the update shows up before Sept.

Good news. My gears buddies and I have been thinking of new achievements and were hoping some new ones would be included. Killing people with the troika, etc. would be nice to see and breath some new life into the game.

That being said, if they remove the ninja flip I will be hella pissed. Things like the listening glitch and shotgun chainsaw should be removed though as I really dislike them (though the listening glitch is unknown by most, it allows the host to hear the other team while gameplay is going on and to hear people who are dead).

Is anyone up for some co-op? I haven't played online co-op and would like to give it a try. I've beaten the game a couple of times so I'm onlly a noob to the co-op scene. If you'd like to play today my gt is Frankysox, and I'll be around all day.

for some reason, I was getting very pissed last night... probably due to the host switching almost every gun with a sniper rifle, and that being my least fave gun.

I need to get back into this game. I haven't played since right after the last update. I won't be getting the maps any time soon, so that sucks.

^Don't worry, you're not missing out on too much. The new maps are too fit to Annex, which I'm not a fan of. I got the maps practically for free, so I didn't mind spending the points, but still, I thought the map pack was going to be up there with Canals or Fuel Depot, but fall short in the category of Gridlock. Except Subway, thats a great map.

I usually play with weapon swaps with my friends. I don't mind either, but sometimes it does enhance the gameplay of some maps (escalation, clocktower, etc.), but yeah Rolento, I played on a weird game with ALL snipers. The host wanted to practice his sniper and made up some weird rules. The rules being that when you down someone you had to let him get up and walk off, and not being able to use any gun other than a sniper rifle. Yeah, I left after the first round.. lame. =p

Process is pretty fun as well, but in general I agree that the maps are too designed for annex to be any fun. Bullet Marsh could easily be fixed for execution or warzone though if they blocked off the marsh and made everyone rush boomshot.

In general I think the maps are just too big.

Check this out...

On the flipside, it would seem that Developer/Publisher relations between Epic and Microsoft Game Studios is at an all time low and even spilling out into the public. In short, Epic has had to break every rule they've laid down for themselves and their reputation with the PC gaming community in the name of Microsoft profiteering... and they know it!

Cliff Bleszinski of Epic has even been quoted as threatening Microsoft to port over GOW to the PS3 to try to leverage some developer rights over the content of the game and XBox Live, but they have already inked the contract and Microsoft is winning much to the chagrin of Epic. Is there a change in the tides over at Epic? Have they learned their lesson from doing business with the devil? Unreal Tournament games have always used OpenGL in correlation with DirectX in the PC sector. These guys were also one of the first to show off their game engine running on early PS3 devleopment hardware at E3 '05. It seems almost like a perfect match. "

Not sure how real this is but is definately interesting if true. Wonder if thats why they held off for so long on announcing UTIII for X360.

I've been long gone from the game that I don't think I'll notice the difference with the patch, unless the patch is strictly for the achievements (doubt it.). I probobly won't play this until the new maps become free anyway.

EDIT: Info on update

Thursday, June 14, at 2 a.m. GMT, the stakes get even higher as Gears of War releases eight new Achievements for the “Annex” gametype and the “Hidden Fronts” Multiplayer Map Pack on Xbox LIVE®.
In addition to adding new Achievements, worth a total of 250 points, Gears of War developer Epic has improved the Roadie Run controls so players have greater control of their movement and can better annihilate their pestilent enemies. The title update will also help squash multiplayer exploits and provide general housekeeping.
For those who have yet to man up and join the battle, the “Annex” gametype is now available for free and the “Hidden Fronts” Multiplayer Map Pack is available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 800 Microsoft Points. All four multiplayer maps will be made available at no cost over Xbox LIVE on Sept. 3, 2007.
That pretty much sums up how I feel also. I used to play gow almost daily about 3 or 4 months ago but now I'm pretty much fed up with all the new glitches and people bitching that a person got lucky everytime they were killed.
can these achievements be unlocked in player matches?
I was wondering the same thing. I was hoping there would be a patch to allow achievements in Player matches, as Ranked matches are so stacking gay.

That may be, but player matches are full of n00bs who have no skill. I may team stack with my buddies, but I can pretty much go into a player match by myslelf and boss up the other team. Also it means that the host can't boot people so that if he is losing he has to eat the loss (unless he is an ass and exits the game which is doable in all modes).

I also hate weapon swaps and little kids and there are a hell of a lot less of those in ranked.

Also it sucks to be out of town when the update is coming out. Great to hear that they are upping the lancer damage though (I am already nasty with it and so more boosting should make it more worthwhile since the pistol and the shotgun and much more important than the lancer) and the new achievements are pretty cool. I already have a few of them or am close to getting them (playing 20 matches of bullet marsh and garden is going to suck though).

i stopped reading there, come back when you're not so full of yourself

Not so full of myself? Have you played with the people who play player matches? Everyone in them has to be 10 and most don't even know what active reload does (or they are glitching). I want to play people who give me a challenge and the majority of people in player matches don't and those that do are host. I am not saying I am the best player, but I rarely lose even when playing aganist host as long as I have one person who knows what the hell they are doing (aka my friends). Basically I lose 1 out of every 20 or 25 matches now and most of the time that is because people get up to eat or they let their friends play who suck (or we end up getting a lot of people on my friends list and we all play aganist each other).

In short, when people actually provide a challenge then I will stop calling people n00bs. I never even used to use the term, but playing on Xbox Live with 12 year olds has brought me to start using it (plus the one guy I play with who is number 11 always says it so it rubs off). I really want to get my ass kicked at this game more often, and if calling people n00bs incites them to bring their A game then all the better.

Hate Annex.

It's way too long / boring / chaotic (yet still boring).

you must not play player matches at all or something. They're much more mature than ranked matches from what i've experienced. We must be playing a different game or something. 90% of the matches i play in Player Matches are extremely decent with a good challenge. Plus the people there aren't trying to exploit glitches for extra kills like almost every ranked match i've played. The bitching is way more less in player matches. Everybody in ranked starts whining about why you're using the shotgun or chainsaw. Ranked matches are horrible as of right now.

Im actually glad you only play ranked so I don't have to deal with your elitism in player matches. People are there to have fun and pose a challenge in almost any setting i've played. It's obvious by your post that you have barely spent any time in player matches. There's whiny bitches in both modes, but so far it's all about people trying to boost their rank or get achievements somehow and start being cheap in ranked, which to me is a total downer.

yea i dunno, i've had way more annoying experiences in ranked because people are so anal about getting more points or killing someone in a certain way or something stupid like that

*shrugs*
Pretty cool it works in player, because I never player Annex ranked with people I don't know.
No one said it did, someone said it would be cool if it did.
Hate Annex.

Annex is about all I will play anymore. If the rounds are set at 3 and low scores, it isn't bad.

The other game types too often degrade into shotgun rushing, which gets boring fast and magnifies the host advantage the most. Hopefully the lancer damage increase helps stop this.

I love this statement:
I never even used to use the term, but playing on Xbox Live with 12 year olds has brought me to start using it ...
Influenced by a 12 year old to be brought to their level ... wow. Also, if someone is going to state that a "Noob" is one who presents no challenge, then that is idiotic. Noob = Newbie = A new player to the game; granted most new players don't show as much of a challenge, but there are many players who have been playing the game for a while that aren't as "1337" as yourself. Personally I attribute the lack of challenge from long term players to a lack of play time due to "extra-gaming responsibilities" like a job, family, homework, (i.e. day to day stuff that matters).

Yeah some little 12 year old shit could pwn us on the field, then fill our ears with the nonsensicle laughter and just of their pre-pubescence; but I think I speak for alot of players who just want to be able to go into a game, do their best, and not be ridiculed because they had 6 kills for 13 deaths. It's a game, outside of that 30 seconds after a match it really has no relevence.

Amen, brother.

The update ruined the game in my opinion, I dont think I will ever need the shotgun again. Im good at using it in CQC but the lancer is now a beast. And now in Execution with 5 second bleedout you wont be getting up from someone a distance away if they have a lancer either. The lancer was never underpowerd just not used because most people always are looking for the 1 hit kill. Hope they put it back the way it was when the lancer wasnt godlike

I'm glad they finally fixed the lancer. Now the cover will be more important and I think it will balance out the whole game in general.

Agreed. I had stopped playing because shotgun rushes got really boring. Now maybe I'll play again. And maybe people will actually find moving from cover to cover important, as the game was intended.

Before, you could charge most people and zig zag because the lancer usually wouldn't take you down. And that's lame.
