CAGiversary!

Hey guys, I figured since we totally hijacked that DS Lite thread to talk about everything from cider to live local music....we might as well have a dedicated thread for it. Especially since I think we definitely have the most robust discussions in the Southeast CAG forum!

I'll kick it off by describing my recent EB experience:

I hit the Northlake EB (the one with the cool manager) today to grab some B2G1 goodness. I ended up getting Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (XB), RE2 (GC), and RE3 (GC), all complete and mint for 86.65. Considering that MvC2 goes for $50-60 on ebay, I thought this to be a pretty good purchase! As I was leaving, the manager guy told me that the North Dekalb store had some rare shit right now too, and that I should check it out. What a nice guy!

Anyway, I f'n hate that EB, but I figured it was worth a trip (its not that far from home). I ended up getting complete mint copies of REZ (PS2), LoZ Promo disc (GC, the one with Master Quest), and Cubivore (GC) for $72.20. Cool.

I also got 3 used DS games (preparing for the Lite on Sun) for B2G1. All three of the games (Trauma Center, Advance Wars, and MarioKart) were complete. But, somehow, as the dipshit was ringing me up, the Trauma manual somehow disappeared from the box! Since they insist upon slapping those damned clear stickers on the edges at sale time, I didn't notice the missing manual until I was on the way home. Jackasses!! Well, they had another complete used copy, so hopefully they can help me out tomorrow....but I'm not counting on it.

In the meantime, this dude with a baby was trading in 20 Xbox games (and getting ripped off, I might add), and the clueless employees there couldn't seem to get it all worked out. That poor bastard must've been there for about 45 minutes, and still hadn't gotten the right trade in credit. UGH.

My two trips today really showed me how utterly opposed two EBs within a few miles of one another could really be. And that is why I always go out to Northlake!

On to more beer talk!!
Almost sounded plausible until I remembered that the person arguing this is herself moving away. ;)
And why is gwen moving? Because her little brother can't take the over-crowding around here. Touche Tybee. Our battle of wits (or in my case, battle without wits) continues.

I still don't think that makes them the best locale for the kind of business magicite is proposing.
Oh I would never suggest that it is, but only because I'm not in that sort of business and I don't purport to know anything about the matter. I can only tell you that traffic around here is heavy from early morning till 8ish at night. Lots of soccer moms, high school kids with cars and nothing to do, and people who actually work for a living.

That's awesome. Congrats to him! As someone who was forced to work in retail while struggling to get a foot in the door in my chosen profession, I know what that frustration feels like...And how great it feels when the call finally comes.
I shall pass along the sentiments. =)

Overcrowding? :wtf:
I agree with the gentleman with Neutral Milk on his face.

Perhaps on Howell Mill or Northside Drive? Surely there are some affordable spots somewhere along there.
Actually, there was a place that opened up on the corner of Hemphill & 10th last year that sold nothing but board games and it failed miserably. It couldn't have been any closer to campus, and it had tons of traffic as it was next to the big bar spot and big sandwich spot. Obviously video games are bigger business than board games, but opening a nerd store next to Tech isn't a sure thing. In fact, there was even an old-school arcade opened in that same strip that didn't last more than a month. One final note, GaTech has a pretty established gaming club... they have a few Xbox360s networked and running on projection screens in the student lounge. It costs $$ to jump in, but your hypothetical store would already have some serious competition.

All that being said, I think your idea kicks ass. Good luck!

EDIT: Also, one of the cool things about being in Athens now is the nearby comic shops (3 that I can think of). When I was back home, I always had to drive to Marietta for comics because there are no shops in Hiram or Douglasville (however, that'd be great if I was wrong). Something to think about.
Sometimes there are comics shops, but finding them are a bitch. I did quite a bit of digging to find every store in cobb, fulton, and cherokee about a year ago. I was planning to open a comic shop last april, but plans were squashed when we found out a baby was on the way. I was planning to use my consulting business to fund the start up of the store, but there was no way I was going to do that with they baby news since I was planning on pushing $50,000 into it. I was planning to open the store in Roswell since both Roswell/Alpharetta just don't have any comic stores anymore. Everyone drives to Oxford or Dr. Nos.

As a kid my comic shop of choice was Book Nook (when my mom would take me there). In HS I would occasionally visit Dr. No's. There was a Titan Comics and Games less than a mile from where my wife and I lived in Smyrna, but comics were a brief period in my life and I don't think the finance committee would tolerate revisiting that little income diversion. She grudgingly endorses Wii and DS-related purchases as it is. ;)

Hello everyone! I just got a video iPod for Christmas and have been listening to the CAGcast since. I live in Oakhurst, near Decatur, and would love to meet other gamers to waste an evening or so. I'm a married 29 year old guy and none of my coworkers play video games...

Anyway, I'll guess I will add this to the list of forums to haunt!

Ha, you know, I've noticed that closed store just recently, as I've been visiting a young lady in the area. I didn't even think about it when I was suggesting things. That's a good point to keep in mind.

The point about Roswell/Alpharetta being devoid of comics is spot-on, though. I used to hit the Classic Comics on Hwy 9 years ago, but they closed. Then I moved my business up to the store by Mall of Georgia for a while. Now that I'm intown, I shop at Oxford. It works, but I would enjoy seeing a shop in Roswell or Alpha again...

Hey Sideswiper! Welcome to the forums (and, on behalf of Cheapy and Wombat, to the podcast). You'll be happy to see that Atlanta has one of the most consistently active local threads on the site. I'm in Decatur too (near the square), 32, also married. Of the frequent posters in this thread, we've got several folks in and around Decatur and then most of the rest seem to be farther out, but everyone's nice. None of my coworkers and few of my friends play games either. My wife enjoys them occasionally.

We've been trying to organize a local get together for a while now, but it hasn't worked out for one reason or another. I think there's some concern about inviting a bunch of strangers over to one's house. I know my wife was iffy on the idea. ;) Might make more sense to meet in public somewhere first to get to know each other and make sure nobody's an axe murderer and THEN follow that up with a gaming meet at someone's place. Brickstore, anyone?

Wow, I haven't visited this thread in a few weeks...I missed a decent amount of chatter!

To Tybee:
Glad to hear that your OTP exodus might be averted; nobody should have to live in Carrollton! ;) The wife and I are indeed returning to the Atlanta area, and though we'd like to buy another house in Decatur eventually, we're gonna have to live in an apartment for a while when we get back (we've got one waiting for us off N. Highland for March 1). Hopefully I'll be back near my beloved Brickstore soon enough!

To the guy wanting to open a store:
I think that is a great idea, but it is one of those things that would have to be done just right in order to work. Location would be everything, and a steady stream of well-advertised events would be your bread and butter. I agree that an intown location would be ideal; somewhere in the Emory-GSU-Tech triangle. There are lots of nerds there, but the key (i think) is to cater to 'hip' nerds rather than the pocket-protector crowd. There are lots of dudes like me (29, married, computer geek, PR professional, musician, etc) who love gaming and other geeky stuff, but who also appreciate some good rock n roll, tasty beers, and a fine cigar from time to time. In short, we're not Poindexters, but we do love to geek out.
/my two cents

To all else:
Once I get back to Atlanta, this thread will once again be started by an Atlanta resident! Imagine that! I miss the robust atl CAG community - San Fran/Bay Area has a shit CAG community compared to Atlanta!

Yeah, we were fortunate enough to get some help from my folks and were able to figure out a plan that looks like it will actually allow us to stay in our house. So we are very, very happy. Get back soon. We miss ya around here. They might actually have the Decatur Marta station finished by the time you get here (they just put up these cool glowing blue pillars with white metal ivy inlays, so it looks like it's going to be nifty).

Agreed on all counts *imagines Brickstore with a gaming lounge*

I'm working on it my friend....give me until summer '08.
Overcrowding? :wtf:
You don't think that the atlanta area/burbs are crowded?
Brickstore, anyone?
I'd comment if I knew what that was.

As to comics/gaming shops. During the 90s there was a nice surge and comic shops went up all over the place around the country. The bubble burts and now it's hard to run a profitable store, from what I hear. I'm not against them by any means, but I do hope that anyone with such a venture in mind does their research well and has contingency plans in the event that their store does not succeed.

Great heavens, NO TV?!?!?! So the reason we all don't meet there for a drink or lunch or sumpin is?

Listen to Weep For from the Big O soundtrack and look at the b&w photos in the gallery. It's the perfect music for those pics.
He's talking about http://www.brickstorepub.com/history.asp.
It's near the Decatur courthouse.
I thought that place sounded familiar, and now I know why. I actually had dinner there with a few classmates back in July. It was a cool place, but I probably would have enjoyed it much more if I hadn't been tired and stressed out from the two days of testing I had just completed.

I really need to pick up a copy of the Big O soundtrack at some point. That show had a great score. I have to say though, that the first season theme does sound a bit like the Flash Gordon theme.

Not at all. Not compared to any other big city in the world. I miss it in fact.

Yeah, it's a great place. The food's decent, but it's the amazing beer menu and atmosphere that makes the place great. It's a great place to just hang out (Decatur has a lot of these).

What about a week from Saturday (Feb. 17)?
What about a week from Saturday (Feb. 17)?
I'd be up for it.
Drinking beers, talking games, eating brats, sounds fun.

Brickstore? Did someone say Brickstore? I LOVE that place. Anyway, I don't say much in this thread, but welcome Sideswiper! This thread is pretty much always active. :D

Anybody else? You in, Travisty? What time works for everyone?
You say this like it's a bad thing...
It is not a bad thing. I just find the similarity to be amusing. I actually own a copy of the Flash Gordon sountrack (on LP).

Holla death, glad to have you post in here.

Don't you mess with the opening. That's the best Five Dollar Intro ever.
smile_eager.gif
I say that both in jest and in truth. For a *really* low budget opening, the music and the animation is just right. It fits.

Now for going Queen/Flash Gordon on me, I will have to hurt you. Because to this day, I can't decide if the music or the movie itself was worse than the other. You, my dear Detective have made me see that the Big O intro can be compared with the Flash theme song. And that I'm not happy about.
Not at all. Not compared to any other big city in the world. I miss it in fact.
I've done a good amount of travel in my years, and this citys sprawl vs the civic engineering (ie, roads) prove a very bad combination.

But for what it's worth, the younger brother isn't looking to hit another city. He needs a quiet area.
What about a week from Saturday (Feb. 17)?
If I'm not driving out the colorado with just mentioned younger brother for a peek at the area, I'd love to.

Well it looks like the Wii will get some love since my 360 died last week. From what I am told the average return time is about 10-14 days.

I actually agree with you about the movie itself. It is simply not very good.

That sounds about right. I had to send mine in for repairs about five or six weeks ago and it took them just over a week to get it back to me.

I managed to pick up a classic controller for the Wii this weekend. Target at Edgewood had about 5 left this morning. Highly recommended for those VC freaks out there like me -- I can finally make some headway in Super Mario World!

Wiis sighted at East-West Target yesterday (four of five of 'em), and a few other places. If folks are still needing, they're starting to show up and last more than three minutes on the shelves.

And Happy Valentines, guys. Now where's my kiss?
Thanks guinaevere. I'm heading to Atlanta this weekend (IKEA).
Plan on at least a 90 minute stop. That store is massive. Got our computer desk and entertainment center there. If you can deal with the customer service (or lack thereof), it's great furniture.

oh ikea! sounds like a good day of walking. Just not on the weekend. Too crowded.

Only 90 minutes? I take my Mum there and we're there for at least three hours.

Yeah, we aren't really planning on going many places except IKEA, Frys, a few eateries (Ru Sans, Varsity), and maybe a few Targets. It should be enough time (I hope).

You'll be driving a whole lot to go to all those different places, especially since Fry's are far out in the burbs. But it should be worth the trip.

I've only been to Fry's once around when they opened, and the kids working there were rude and clueless. I also didn't see any deals to get excited about. Has it improved?
I've only been to Fry's once around when they opened, and the kids working there were rude and clueless. I also didn't see any deals to get excited about. Has it improved?
Deals can be hit or miss, but it's always fun to walk around and see what they have. The variety of goods that they sell almost rivals a Wal-Mart. I mean, 12 packs of soda and transistors? Pocket bikes and 60" plasmas? Office furniture and car stereos? It's just crazy! As for customer service, I never expect much at a place like that, but at least I never have to wait for a register, which is much better than Best Buy or Circuit City.

So is there still any interest in meeting up tomorrow? I'm supposed to paint a bedroom, so I might be indisposed. On the other hand, it would be an easy way to get out of it. ;)

Let me know if anyone wants to meet up at the Brickstore or anywhere else.

Sandy Springs Target has about 5 Baten Kaitos (NGC) for $4.98. I almost bought another one because.. hey for $5 who wouldn't.

I also got a nice deal at Microcenter, Viewtiful Joe 2, Bloodrayne, and SSX Tour all for $11.. however that was the last VJ2 and last SSX Tour.

Ooh. Thanks for the head's up. Will head over there on my lunch break tomorrow.

Remember way back when, when someone (I think Gwen) posted about those Phoenix Wright's for $19.99 at the Douglasville TRU? Well, I finally got my wife to stop in there on Friday and they had one left. Hooray! Played it all weekend. GREAT, GREAT game. I was dumb for not getting this before now. I'm almost done with the third case. I'm sure as soon as I finish it I'll want the sequel.

Unfortunately, no luck finding the above mentioned $5 Baten Kaitos at Target. Anybody seen them other places around town?

While we're at it, if anyone sees Advance Wars for the DS at any Best Buys around town, please let me know.

went shopping thru central atlanta looking for BestBuys. Some guy with the list is sweeping pretty much everything himself at buckhead. The two others I went two were empty. I still managed to make out with 2 Kingdom Hearts, Worms, and I noticed Fire Emblem for $10 and picked it up as well.

Has anyone stopped by Edgewood yet? I'm headed there after work. Looking for Worms DS, Advance Wars DS, Killzone, and Katamari 1.

I don't suppose any nice ATL CAG happened to see that PS2 Rugby 2005 game, or either an Xbox or PS2 World Soccer Winning 11? I just recently got hooked on the sports, and now looking for the games cheap. ;)

Sorry. I was looking to grab Winning 11 myself. This was at 890
Did anybody hit up the Kennesaw BB? I went today and found exactly what I expected to...
nothing.
Them and Acworth. Zilch.

Did pick up Lego II at GR on Shallowford and MLB 2K7 at Chastain Wal-mart.

Anyone know if the CompUSA in Buckhead closed? I looked on their webpage, and they list Knoxville as having the closest store. I don't remember the one in ATL closing... weird.

In other news... ROAD TRIP!

Knoxville Knoxville!!! I can't wait to visit the Wig Sphere!
