Alright, ihadFG, take a look at this map:
Looks big, yah? I thought so too. I thought after I got out of that super green World of Warcraft forest (Dalenfarth), I'd have 75% more of a great game to encounter. After all, the weapons are tons of fun to try out (even the wand feels like a gun), the skills are powerful and satisfying (albeit pumping points into one skill will demolish everything in your path), and the melee combos look great. It's like someone got DMC in my Skyrim, took out any semblance of difficulty, and I'm loving it.
But you know, you're bored now, you're tired of facing wolves, spiders, bandits, and the little Covenant grunt like guys made of wood -- shit is too easy, too predicatable. Let's go to Detyre -- I hope we're ready!
What is Detyre? It's sand, and rocks. I don't even think there's music playing to its environment, either. It is a pretty dry place, thrown in their for the sake of being the desert region of another WRPG. And you know at this point the game has awful quest writing and structure (you knew it from the demo), like a scrunched together MMO made for one. But that's ok, you can ignore it, let's just explore these new areas and....more wolves...more bandits...more spiders. And whats the hook of Detyre, the mysterious desert region? What's the first thing the developer puts in your face? It's immediately another "oh please help me, my husband has gone missing!" quest line.
And the Plains of Erathell? It's a bunch of grass. The
entire thing. Grass and magical stones you have to go out and touch, and they're all placed 10 minutes of sprinting apart. Wolves and bandits.
And Klurikon across the river? A copy and paste job of Dalenfarth, except...wait for it -- fog! And wolves and bandits.
And as you're exploring this world, you've inevitably tried all the weapons, you've inevitably plowed through every encounter with little interest beyond testing the occasional new spell (they look super cool, really, I love it). And the story is so generic it's insulting. They literally took the Orcs from Lord of the Rings, and you're the only super badass that can stop them. Think the story of Dragon Age, minus
all the characters.
Stealth kills are cool too.
That's a shame. While I did enjoy the demo, I was somewhat worried about whether the game would stay fun for more than a handful of hours. And while most RPGs tend to keep you interested through story progression, I could already tell Amalur would be completely lacking in that department. I was hoping that the environments and enemies would at least keep the game fresh, but I guess that's not the case.
