In Bioshock's case, you still have to activate the game online when you install it, though they got rid of the limitations on how many times you can install the game. With Mass Effect, I believe that you're limited, but you can call EA or some shit to renew your key.
Honestly, it's complete bullshit, and it's one of the things I really hate about the PC platform, but the upside is that the games look sooo much better than their 360 counterparts. While yes, it's absolutely retarded, I still think the PC versions are the ones to own... just be sure to back that shit up once you've installed it so The Man can't pull a fast one.
