Grammy nominated King Diamond screams "Metal Heads Unite!!"
I'm going to disagree; after Suicidal for Life and the one before that (Art of Rebellion?), Freedumb was a fantastic shot in the arm. It wasn't s/t good, or Join the Army good, but it was decent late 90's style punk rock with a rather pretentious bass player (nothing new in the Suicidal world).

The fact that they never followed up on Freedumb is a disappointment - OTOH, the 7 Seconds stuff that came out at the same time almost washed away sour memories of "Soulforce Revolution." But let me not go too far, or else suffer chiding by the metalheads for not talking about metal.
The Art of Rebellion is where they lost me. I wasn't into the songs. Kind of slow for me. The one after that I didn't even bother checking into (I think like 5 of the song titles had the word fuck in them). I dunno, it pains me to say but I couldn't get into later ST stuff, and they're one of my favorite bands. He got too much into that Infectious Grooves shit, took away his time from ST. But from their first album up until Lights... is just killer stuff. I love every song on those albums. Rocky was a FANTASTIC guitar player. IMO they haven't fully recovered since he left the band. I think he's spending his time playing in a ska band now though. I don't remember Freedumb (I kind of got out of music for a while but recently have been getting back into it). I'll have to give that another listen.

Since it wasn't a metal discussion, this should make up for it:
If wikipedia is to be believed, Rocky George is playing with Fishbone (?!?!?!?!) now.
Yeah I think he's still with them. Why did he leave ST in the first place?

Also, it's amazing how drastically different Mike Clark looks nowadays. Back in the day he had long black hair, no tats. Now he has bleach blonde hair Eminem style, all short, and tats all over his body. He kind of looks like a poser:)

He sounds like that one asshole on Food Network, with the spiky blond hair that belies the fact that he's neither cool nor young.

I dunno what happened with George. Did they steal and burn his Pirates painter's cap?

Yeah Mike Clark looks like one of those 40 year old guys who's like "yeah man! METAL/PUNK/HARDCORE/WOOOO!!" yet only listens to Sabbath and Master of Puppets. He seriously looks like a jackass, lol. It's amazing how drastic all these guys look. I know it's part of the whole growing up thing, but it's kind of funny to do a before and after look at a lot of these 80s guys. But then again, I don't know how much a person has really "grown up" when they're wearing the Suicidal flip hat and bandanas. :D

I think Rocky left the band because all he wanted was a pepsi, and Muir just wouldn't give it to him. He was that S.T. sound. That combined with Mike Muir's lyrics/vocal delivery just put the band over the top for me. Deep down I hope for a How Can I Laugh reunion (hell maybe even get Trujio away from his billion dollar contract with Metallica to play a few shows), but I know it will never happen. Just like I've been waiting for a Cro-Mags Quarrel reunion but that ain't going down anytime soon.

Ok guys...Here is something I digged up from my past
MarkSlayer.jpg

Here is a picture from 1990. I was working at a store called the Record Exchange in a suburb of Cleveland. We had an in-store autograph session with members of Testament and Slayer. You can see Eric Peterson, Chuck Billy, Tom Araya and Kerry King in the group photo. I'm the guy with the black Sepultura t-shirt standing next to Chuck.

Yeah...I'm dating myself here but those were the best times! Thrash Metal's glory days. Both of those bands were in their prime and they played a killer show that night.

Awesome picture Xevious! Especially love Tom's facial expression, sucks that Slayer might retire, you kiddies better see Slayer live if they do! I should find my old pictures, back when I had long hair. Man, that long hair got me a lot of ladies. Now I just keep it short.

Good. Slayer sucks. They need to hang it up. Another band living off albums from the 80s. They haven't done anything good since the early 90s. Plus they tour with shitty ass poser bands nowadays, yet keep claiming how "metal" they are. Good riddance. I'll always have a soft spot for those early Slayer albums but they haven't really done much since.

Is Nuclear Assault still around? Holy crap. I thought they stopped playing. Third World Genocide was a pretty terrible album, but that old shit is killllleer.

Thanks man! I have long hair again (I cut it during the mid-90s and grew it back out several years later) but I noticed only girls my age like it. Girls from generation Y are not so into long hair. At least thats my experience.

Out of all those guys that I met, Tom Araya was definitely the coolest. Kerry King was very business like. The Testament guys were cool but they were very quiet. I think spending 3 hours signing autographs can make you pretty tired though...

It was definitely a day to remember.
I can't even listen to them anymore. Bore the hell out of me.
To me, their newer albums are boring, but stuff like Zombie Apocalyse, Hacked Up, and Chainsaw Dismemberment are classics.

Haha I started listening to Jungle Rot again. Damn, I wish those guys would play MDF, I love their style of primitive DM.
Well I'm excited.

Gigantour!
Wow, that's terrible that High on Fire has the lowest billing, when they're the only thing even worth seeing.

Those albums are pretty much all I had, and they were just so boring. There was absolutely zero variation between songs and albums, everything was the same (and this is coming form someone who listens to mostly grindcore).

Strange that you don't like Job for a Cowboy.
Strange that you don't like Job for a Cowboy.
Never have. They started as really crappy scenegrind, then changed on later album(s?) into really generic death metal/deathcore. Not worth the time.

Has anyone listened to these two compliations, Thrash Like A Maniac and Speed Kills...Again? I've been feeling nostalgic lately and came across these two comps. They have like new bands playing old thrash type stuff. I recgonize some of the band names but can anyone vouch for this stuff? A lot of the new thrash is terrible but I heard these were pretty good. Any opinions?

I was reading that all these new thrash bands are getting signed to major labels just like it was back in the early 80s.

Can you site some examples?

Well from what I read, bands like Evile, Merciless Death, etc. I forgot what site I was reading, but I think it said a few of these new thrash bands have signed to Earache records.

I thought he did a good job considering he had no budget. Of course, I'm biased.
Woah, that's awesome. I've been enjoying War Metal Battle Master. Great video, fits pretty well with the music.

That is pretty sweet.. I've listened to the album a couple of times, it's pretty decent. I'm not the biggest thrash guy, though.. I guess that's what they are.

The music is silly, never take this kind of stuff seriously. It's great to listen to for those times where you just want to sit back and listen to whatever.

EDIT: Just noticed that two of the members are in 7000 Dying Rats and Christpunchers, good bands.

There is a rumor posted on Blabbermouth about a Heaven & Hell/Judas Priest/Motorhead/Testament tour! Shit...I would totally fucking be there!

Holy schnikey......
listening to the new meshuggah album. freakin awesome.
growing my hair out.. im at the beatle stage lol
Yeah, I can't stop listening to it. Some of it is even borderline catchy. The new album has more of a song structure on top of the insane time signatures and really works well. Complex riffs are best when they have an overarching 4/4 thing and this album has a lot of that. On the next album I'd like to hear a lot more of Thordendal's legato lead playing like in the quiet sections on Destroy Erase Improve. Mix that with the new style found on obZen....
http://metroidmetal.com/

Interesting stuff. Not good, not bad - but an appreciable spin on Metroid.
I've been a fan of Metroid Metal for many years. I've loved the Super Metroid soundtrack since the game came out and always thought that a metal take on it would be perfect. Luckily someone followed through on that. And these aren't simple covers, Stemage puts a lot of thought into new arrangements for the tunes and it's just sweet. Super Metroid Brinstar theme FTW.

Yeah, there's this thrash revival thing going on apparently. Unlike 99% of metalheads I don't like thrash at all. I don't have a problem with new thrash bands starting out, but this whole thing has infected bands that never were really thrash to begin with (Machine Head).

I believe Rob Flynn of Machine head was part of a Trash band called Vio-lence. So Machine Head does have their trash roots.

Without a doubt they have a thrash influence. Even so, Burn My Eyes is way more groove metal than it is thrash metal. In my opinion they started out in uncharted waters and now have disappointingly waded back into an already well-traveled area.

Uncle Glenn says a new Danzig album may be out by the end of Summer and once again shoots down Misfits rumors (although seems to be a bit more receptive to it than in the past).

Well, I'm still kinda stunned by the idea of him talking openly about the "M-word," which his publicists would for years and years prep interviewers by saying "don't ask about it."

Knowing a handful of folks who are far too into the Misfits and like to divulge all the drama going on over the years that I didn't really ask about in the first place (such is life), I would totally believe that issues b/w Doyle and Jerry are a bigger obstacle to overcome than the "Danzig factor." I have no idea who the assholes are here, but all signs point to Jerry Only (christ, IIRC, he was such a fuckin' bastard even the wrestler Vampiro comes out lookin' good in their little tiff).

At this point, I'd much rather see Danzig doing old Misfits stuff with (or without) Doyle:

At least I got the chance to see AFI/Samhain/Danzig a couple years back, right about the time AFI made the fullblown transition to fruitbat rock and were just another opening act.

I'll tell you what, KR: the other interview clip w/ Danzig talking about an all-acoustic blues album is far more intriguing than anything else right now. A whole record of nothin' but stuff like "Killer Wolf" or "I'm the One"? Sign me the fuck up.
