Grammy nominated King Diamond screams "Metal Heads Unite!!"

Except it's Dream Theater, so the only thing it'll be good for is sleeping.

Holy shit, that IS a fucking awful lineup.

Anybody here play guitar? I have a blister on my right pointer finger from trying to play " the part" in Raining Blood by Slayer. I don't think I'll ever get that shit perfect.

Vader isn't terrible, and I enjoy Psycroptic, but dear god, the tour is headlined by Black Dahlia Murder, and also features Despised Icon.

Alright Kids...I need some more..."suggestions". The only metal I can get thats new around here, that requires me no EFFORT to go and find, is what winds up on MTV 2 saturday nights.

Now unlike you young sons o' bitches.....I am old. Old and feeble. For I too was once young and angry..and one with the metal. Yes, when Adam Curry was hosting headbangers ball I was there...when Ratt was considered "heavy"...I was there. When...well you get the point.

Lately I've found some rock thats worth listening to, but so far no whole albums have grabbed me. I have yet to find an entire disc that made me go "Damn I likes this".

In fact the last disc I bought that I was actually satisfied with was The Misfits AMERICAN PSYCHO (I loved every song on that one, or nearly).

Since then...I've only snagged a few actual CD's....Death Kult Armageddon by Dimmu Borgir (mostly disappointed, was it just me or were the kick drums like a few milliseconds off on the entire disc? Maybe its my speakers)......the last Satyricon with KING on it (hated the whole thing, except for King..and the lead-off track wasn't bad). So I'm like batting zero.

I'll be catching the Priest, Heaven and Hell, Testament show in August.....lookin forward to that, but thats vintage stuff from my youth....anyone got any suggestions? Oh yeah I bought the last...errr...Kreator disc...it wasn't bad. i also snagged the new Testament but haven't listeend to it.

Problem is there's just too much crap to wade through......and I'm not really down with hyper-speed thrash or death growl screamin....

advise.

I am of the same generation as you and like you, some of the newer bands are not to my taste. For awhile I was listening to Stoner Metal because a lot of that draws off of 70's influences. Stonerrock.com is a good place for checking that stuff out. That may be a good place for you to start off too.

Here is something funny. I caught this on Blabbermouth today:

SKITZO Announces New Drummer - June 22, 2008 Legendary Bay Area thrash/crossover band SKITZO has parted ways with drummer Noah Smith. His replacement is 21-year-old Scott Fuller from SENTINEL BEAST who just got back from touring Europe with OMEN and making several festival appearances. Scott will be featured on the next SKITZO full-length CD and will join the band for upcoming live shows.

SKITZO's 17th CD, "Five Point Containment", was released in May 2007 via Open Grave Records. The album includes special guest appearances by Jeff Becerra (POSSESSED), Phil Demmel (VIO-LENCE, MACHINE HEAD), Sickie (THE MENTORS), and John Marshall (METAL CHURCH, BLIND ILLUSION).

So that press release is no big deal. Then I looked at the Judge Judy Clip that was attached:

Then it gets worse! Here is a clip from Jerry Springer:

Here is another clip from Ripleys Believe it or not!

Hey what did you guys think of the new Cynic promo tracks, http://www.mediafire.com/?pdgwy3zgxmy They finished recording the new album, it's going to be released by Season of Mist records(I was hoping they would sign to Relapse). They'll also be doing a world tour shortly after. Let's hope they bring Carcass along with them when they tour the States.

Green Jello tonight! Take that, 14 year wait!

Could be awful but who gives a damn, it's fucking Green Jello!

No foolin', if Green Jello is playing in your area, go see them. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was entertaining as hell. I've been to a shitload of concerts and that's probably the most fun I've had at one. Sort of Gwar-ish presentation but fortunately you don't get shit sprayed all over you. They occasionally pull volunteers out of the crowd and have them dress up as characters during songs. By the end of the concert they have the first few rows of people up there during Three Little Pigs. Great fucking time. A few pics...I may put up a video of everyone on stage later...

To tie it into the site a little...yes, they did play the song from the old Maximum Carnage game.

Re-united Amebix to tour US in 2009?

http://www.cultpunk.com/?p=375

Holy fucking shit. I had no clue they even got back together in the first place. Check www.amebix.net for their paltry website and a few short new recordings of classic Amebix songs. They still sound incredible 20-some odd years later.

- Arise!

- Winter

- Chain Reaction

Also, check out http://www.moshpit-tragedy.com/ for a band-authorized pay-what-you-want download of their last album, Monolith. You can pay nothing for this if you want, and it's a fantastic album.

EDIT: Huh, it appears that Spider (Amebix' drummer) is not part of the new band, and their fill-in drummer is Roy Mayorga (Soulfly, Nausea).

Hoooooooly shit. I MUST SEE THIS.

Also, fuck you Hellnation, for having a tour that only constitutes the midwest.

That's awesome. I hear Hellbastard has also reformed and are touring soon.

two new bands i discovered this weekend.

skeletonwitch - great stuff if you like cheesy lyrics with dungeons & dragons riffs

arsis - pretty standard stuff these days, good nonetheless

They're both very good, IMO. Skeletonwitch made my day when I discovered them, as I realized there would be more than hippies in the town I'm moving to in 3 weeks.

yeah im really diggin skeletonwitch.

i should give arsis more credit, their sound is pretty familiar but they are very technical.

I've seen Skeletonwitch four times. fuck, they're good. It's bullshit that their Danzig/Dimmu Borgir tour is coming nowhere near me.. I might have to make the trek.

Can anyone recommend me a list of bands to listen to? I'm getting fuckin bored with 80s thrash and that's all I've pretty much listened to since getting into metal. I need some new and fresh bands. I'm not into black metal. And please, no metal where there is more piano than actual guitar playing. Death metal is cool I guess but I'm not a fan of the dog barking style vocals. Any help would be appreciated, cause I need to find some new bands.

Do you have a last.fm page? I'd just like to get an idea of you're into. Here's my page, you can listen to my playlist, even though it's not that organized http://www.last.fm/user/ZombieChrist/
Arsis is great, but I've been skipping Skeletonwitch, mostly due to their fans.
I've always bristled at not listening to a group due to their fans (e.g., I happen to dig a good clip of Marilyn Manson's work), though I'd draw the line at ever attending a live show of his.

ICP's another one like that, but lucky for me their music makes me want to kill myself.

So what's the deal w/ skeletonwitch fans? Do they paint their faces or something?

To Blackout542:

I was similar in the sense that I was mostly into 80s Thrash and disuaded by DM's vocals, but I found that that was actually the next step for me.

Due to historical evolution, you'll find that there is a lot of DM that is very similar to Thrash, just with more aggressive vocals, more vicious guitar tone and more focus on riffing over soloing. It's more aggressive than Thrash, but isn't that Thrash's appeal? Just taking it one step further.

As for some recommendations...

Pestilence
Bolt Thrower
Entombed
Massacre

Shame on you, no Death? Hehe.

If it makes you feel any better, I was close to throwing that in there, but I figured he was likely on coming across it on his own ;)

Hah. I think I sent you an invite to the metal group awhile ago, check your inbox or something. On another note, it's amazing how accessible Death is and how they're sort of a gateway band to other "out there" and "progressive" death metal acts.

I enjoy a decent chunk of Manson's stuff too. The problem with Skeletonwitch fans, as they always seemed to be into utter garbage (I'm talking Bring Me The Horizon and Whitechapel and shit like that), and they tend to listen to things that sound identical, so I always just lumped Skeletonwitch into that category.

I'm actually wearing my Death shirt right now. Finally fits again.

No I don't have one. I'll sign up for it. Can I link it with my Zune or something? I don't really listen to music on my computer.

Only DM bands I really listen to are the "older" ones. I like Death a lot. The earlier albums were a bit thrashy so that's how I got into it. I also liked Chuck's vocals. I loved the Sound of Perseverance. That was a damn good album. What else...Possessed? That's more along the thrash lines though. I liked early Morbid Angel. I like Nile, Carcass. Master was good as well. As far as "new" bands go, I thought Ghoul was pretty cool. I ordered a Misery Index cd off Relapse a while back and thought it was good.

The thing with thrash is that it gets boring fast and all the bands I listen to are strickly 80s. There is no new releases, no new tours, etc. That's the thing that sucks about it.

Older death metal is the way to go. I'd recommend looking further into the Florida and Swedish scenes in the early 90s. I see you've already found some great stuff in Death, Master and Possessed.

BTW Carcass is Grindcore, so maybe it would be worthwhile for you to look into that genre, Personally, it's not my thing.

Not entirely true. Symphonies of Sickness and Reek of Putrefaction are goregrind (which is a whole 'nother ballpark), Necroticism is death metal, and Heartwork and Swansong is melo-death.

I'm pretty much the anti-trash (omg the horror), so maybe I can assist. I've been into jazz/doom type metal which is about as far from thrash as it gets.

Neurosis
Meshuggah
Baroness
Bongripper
Callisto
Crowbar
Isis
Kruger
Minsk
Yakuza

What I am essentially saying is that there is a Meshuggah bandwagon and I believe they are heavily overrated and monotonous.

Well shit, apparently I forgot that intarweb forums are all about some thrash/death/black metal. :whee:
Man I hate subgenres.
I can't even keep up with the shit. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've heard of some of the bands, but never actually gave their stuff a listen.
