Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info (PS3) OUT NOW PS3 review score = 99.6%

I was only kidding with the Nico line, but some optional purchases would be nice. I don't currently have a reason to earn more money, so it's all just a meaningless number for me.

Hope that changes.

WTF? Disturbing #-o
Question/Problem

How long does it take for the mandatory install to finish and into the game?? I've been sitting here waiting a nd for more than 10 minutes, nothing, just stuck at the 'Starting a new game...' screen.
Same thing happened to me even after I deleted the original install (I tried it twice). I looked online and disabled my internet on the PS3 and it works fine now. Sucks though that we won't be able to try out multiplayer:bomb:
btw, does anyone think that Roman's cab driver is f*ckin hilarious. I don't know, indian accent + cab is just funny to me. "I get so much Poosy" I always wait in the cab until he stops talking to Niko, then hit A.
I used the free cab service last night and thought the dialogue was hilarious. I'm gonna use it more often in the future.
BTW what's the best way to get money in this game?
Here's a neat tip from gamefaqs. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like it'll be easy to pull off as long as you can find an ATM. The only ATM I've seen so far is at the strip club though (I got there for the free combat shotgun  ).
Easy money

Go to an ATM, then cause a traffic jam to the area. Wait for someone to take money from the ATM, then kill him or her. Make sure to block any nearby roads so the ambulance cannot get to the murdered victim. Take the money they dropped on the ground. Then, run a short distance away, and go back. The money should have respawned on the ground. You can repeat this as many times as desired. You can also kill more people taking their money from the ATM to increase the amount of money that respawns.

I just have fun just messing around knifing people for money, and then running from the cops, stealing their cars and then proceed to run people over. It's a nice break from just doing missions.
I actually did a ton of that yesterday...just put the phone on "Sleep Mode" and go on an old fashioned GTA-style RAMPAGE.

Good times, indeed.

There's an ATM in the wall of the building directly across the street from your Bohan safehouse, too.

Nice! Thanks hehe. I'm going to try out the ATM trick tonight and stock up on weapons. It's a PITA driving everywhere to pick up free weapons

That's an interesting tip (ATM). Will have to try that tonight.

I wonder, though, would you have to block both directions of the one-way street?

can you pick up people if you drive a cab for cash?

I liked being able to do firetruck/paramedic missions, at least cop ones are still around.

Finally, where can I pick up another knife? I was busted.

Does anyone know if you can dial any of the phone #s in the game that's on the billboards and signs?
I was in front of the first clothes shop you get in the game and their sign has the phone 555-123-4567 (or whatever the phone # is).. so I figured.. what the hell, I would dial it.. and it just beeped at me like it was a bad number.

Haven't tried that out but it sounds interesting. Will have to drive around and write down some numbers and give it a shot.
I do like being able to call 911 to get a cop, ambulance or firetruck to come to you. Was useful with that one mission where you needed to use the police computer to track the dude down without having to cause a ruckus.

Did you hit 1 first? ;)

Ya know, like dialing to another area code? Kinda doubt it'll work but might be worth it to give it a shot.
Hopefully you can listen to some fun stuff over the phone just like in The Darkness.

Complete waste of time.

Hmm no I didn't try.. I thought it was all the same area code.
I only tried it with one phone number though. not sure if the other ones have messages with them

Has anyone heard any 800 numbers mentioned in the game yet? I ask because I know for Vice City, they had working 800 #'s(actually 866 numbers)in the game. Most only had funny recordings on them, but it's those little touches that make Rockstar the #1 publisher/dev for me in my book.

Here I am 57% of the way through and I've played for 26 hrs and 14 minutes. Although I'm not doing all the side missions, no assassinations and no stealing cars for stevie.

Ouch, these later mission are getting difficult, especially since many are multi part, and often involve chases, being chased by cops, etc...

It's also getting frustrating in chases that everyone you chase is all of a sudden a master of evasive driving, pulling off quick turns that would make any stunt driver envious.

So the mission is The Snow Storm, which is Elizabetha's mission (thanks Vanigan :]), and I basically had to retrieve a bag of coke from some abandoned Old Hospital. There was a gang of thugs there, and I had to take them all out (surprisingly, lol :p ). So after killing them all, taking the coke, and avoiding the cops I get to some alleyway because that where L.Jacob told me to meet him... and Michelle is there.

That bitch Michelle! :bomb:
She took the coke away, and she admits to spying on me for the government! I risked my life for that coke...I would have never known she would betray me!
Now I don't know what to think of her...

Freakyzeeky, please also remember to explain a little what the spoiler is about. Your spoiler is about the mission, The Snow Storm. However others might click on it thinking that your spoiler is about some earlier mission.

I just finished the same mission.
I don't really identify with the criminal mindset well so I was a lot more empathetic towards Michelle's situation, especially since it's clear she has feelings for Nico.

Things get interesting with her though. I'm glad I got her rating up to 100% so that there was more character in their break-up.

Hee. I clicked on freaky's spoiler and even though I'm not there yet, it just makes me want to play more. Plus now a lot of the dialogue I hear makes more sense. :whistle2:k

LOL I'm lucky then, since I may not have to deal with Michelle later on in the game. I whipped out a pistol inside Cluckin' Bell and popped some guy with a headshot right in front of her. She took it upon herself to walk home from the date at that point. LMAO

I've been SUPER tempted to free aim and give HER a headshot at times, since I hate doing the gf thing in the game. It's just an annoying side mission, if you ask me. I used to always try to bail out at the last second from a speeding vehicle while aiming it at a gas pump with one of the gf's inside it in San Andreas.

LMAO that's awesome
I'm glad there's a Jazz station on there, makes everything that much more kick back

That and they threw Bob Marley in there :D
I'm just happy R* decided to include R.Kelly's 'Bump n' Grind' in the game... Which is like, my favorite song to make out to! :)

Haha, I heard that song too, and I first heard it with Michelle in the car on the first date XD
LMAO that's awesome
I would always try it with the police woman in Los Cabrados or whatever the town name was in the back country of Las Venturas. I never did manage to get out of the vehicle before hitting the tanks though or she would bail out too.

Of course, I did away with her finally by taking her 'swimming' just down from the police station. I jumped in the water, she followed me into the water, then I gave her a headshot when she was stuck under the floating dock.

I went to a local GS with my one buddy earlier today and the one clerk there said that Rockstar is supposed to have a patch/update out by THURSDAY. I don't know how true it is, but for those of you with the problem, be on the lookout for it just in case.

Oh and bostonfrontier, I know in prior games they had a way to shut off the dizzying camera effects. They were called TRAILS on the prior 2-3 console only games. But, I'm not sure if they kept the ability to turn the weird effects off in this game as well.

What exactly aren't you liking about the game, if I may ask, aside from the camera?

Ugh..... I'v been playing this for the past 4 hours trying to like it, but I can't seem to.....
This game is more of the same, if you didn't like the previous GTA games, it's doubtful you'd like this one. While there are graphical and combat improvements, I think the biggest improvement is the attempt to tell a more realistic story.

thanks for the spoiler tags guys..

got my longest playtime in the other night.. a little over 3 hours straight. I love the stat tracking in this game

I don't know much about the hippity-hop music that you kids are into, but doesn't R. Kelly like to videotape himself urinating on 14-year-old girls? That alone would ruin it's make-out potential for me.

That would be R&B, not hip-hop ;)

R.Kelly is nowhere near hip-hop, I don't consider much on the game hip-hop, even on the Classics radio station (I heard an old Nas track though, that was chill). It's mostly crap rap n' such, but my favorite by far is the J'N'R' Jazz Station, I think that's my favorite genre of music

JNR is an awesome station, definitely one of my favorites as well. You should check out the fusion station, as well as IF99 for some sweet Fela Kuti tracks.

I'll check em' out.

The other radio station I love is the Tuff Gong Radio station, basically all Marley so it's a rastafarian paradise :p

That's a good one too. I forgot to mention my nice little run in with one of the fine pedestrians in Liberty City. I was walking down the sidewalk and purposefully bumped into someone holding a coffee so they would drop. The guy apologized to me, and then after a few seconds, asked me to hit him. Of course I obliged his request, which led to a fist fight. He kept saying how much fun it was, but stopped talking after I beat him to the ground. Has anyone else encountered this?

Hahahahaha, wtf?!?

That sounds like a trip, I gotta go try that sometime :D

Usually everyone I run into (or run over :whistle2:$) just curses me out or runs away screaming

Yeah, the best part was that there was no cop around to try and arrest me. Speaking of which, does anyone know anything about resisting arrest? I heard someone mention it on the gamefaqs board, but haven't heard much about it.

Yea, when they have their guns on you and you put your hands up, if you keep tapping X you resist arrest and can run away.

This usually results in taking some shots though, so make sure you have a good amount of health just in case

Thanks for clearing that up. With the exception of Saul Williams and El-P in the last year or so, the most recent hip-hop album I bought was Run DMC's Tougher Than Leather. In 1988.

I mostly listen to Radio Broker and Electro-Choc. The talk-radio station is always good for a laugh when I'm on a long drive, too.

Haha, that does say somethin' about the road Hip-Hop has gone though..in the USA.
It's still goin' strong in other countries, my main squeeze is in Japan though, Jazzy Hip-Hop is my fav and they provide plenty of it, but that's a whole different discussion for a thread we already got up :p

Has anyone bothered to "watch TV' in the apartment? I saw about 15-20 minutes of Republican Space Rangers, man, biggest mistake I ever made, in fact, everything that shows up there is pretty explicit/perverted, but I did notive a stand-up comedy show in there, might check that out sooner or later. It's something to do when I grab a bite to eat and have some time to kill.

According to this, GTA IV sold 6 million copies in it's first week...that's $500M in sales.
The New York Times, who seem to have got hold of Take-Two's data a little earlier than the rest of us, are reporting that the publisher's going to announce some hard GTA IV sales figures later today. Those figures will reveal the game has already sold 6 million copies, with an astonishing 3.6 million of them going on the first day. This means the game's racked up sales of over $500 million in just one week. Hoo-boy. If the NYT are on the money, expect Take-Two to confirm this later today.

well just beat it, somehow it feels like the game didn't quite live up to the hype, good fun nevertheless.
Starting to think the same way. After the first few days of euphoria and delirium passed I now see this a mid 8's game. It's good fun and but the hype got a bit too much IMO. Online is where this has limitless potential, it's just a shame the online is spotty right now and the fact that with a whole bunch of people blowing shit up it can at times literally slow to like 10fps.
