Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info (PS3) OUT NOW PS3 review score = 99.6%
I beat the game a few days ago, about 31 hrs invested
OK...so can you answer my (and Metaly's) question above without spoiling anything?
I probably won't finish this game until sometime next year. Taking it slow...
Ditto. Savoring every moment. If I hit 100% by Christmas I'll be satisfied. :)

I do want to get a good bit of it done before Alone in the Dark comes out in June, though...I have a distinct feeling that game is going to own my soul.
I've been running my game off of a single save file, but I want to be able to
see both endings.
At what point in the game should I create a second save file so I can do that?

Brucie makes me want to kill. I keep hoping
that he'll turn out to be a bad guy
so I can shoot him in the head.
It will be pretty obvious, basically 2 icons will show up on your map and people will call you and try to persuade you both ways.

If you want to know what the icons are and what they are called click the spoiler tag, there is no other info there other then that.

The icons are a $ for The Deal and a Dagger for Revenge

For those that still have the freezing issues, it's looks like there will be a firmware update sooner or later to fix those issues :whistle2:

"There is an issue with the launch edition of the PS3 and this game, the game was checked over and passed as 100% compatible with the current version of the PS3, of course the earlier version has custom chips which mean that it is a very different animal from the current PS3 on sale.

Sony are aware of this difference and are looking into producing a new firmware just for the earlier version of the PS3."

Linky.

Just finished the game in 33 hours with 70.x% done. Still needed to do some assassinations and car jacking for Brucie's friend along with the ass tons of pigeons and jumps I need to finish.

As for the ending, it's a good thing I chose
revenge since I liked Roman much better than Kate.
I will have to reload my other saved game to see what happens if I chose the later.

All in all, GTAIV far exceeded my expectations. The best one in the series and ranks among my top 3 games played of all time. Hopefully I won't be kicking myself for not having a 360 for the DLC but I might just have to get one if it's not some lame armored horse I can patrol the streets of Algonquin with.

You rock. Thanks for the info!

I started on my second play through last night, I decided to do everything opposite that I did in the first one. Meaning if I choose to kill Mr/Mrs X last time, this time I save them ect. Plus I want to see the other ending as well. It actually isn't taking me that long either, since I can drive a lot better then when you first start, and you basically know what to expect it makes it a lot more fun and less frustrating.

okay I'm trying to beat each person's missions to 100% and now I'm confused as to what is the main missions and what are just friends' missions.

I'm up to the point where (28% main story)
Elizabeta just shot Manny and I did a single mission for Francis and also something for Michelle. Up to this point, what is apart of the main missions and who are just friends?

Bruce is just a friend right?
What about Dwayne?
Playboy X?
Elizabeta?
Francis M?
Unknown guy that works w/ Michelle?
Can I still date Michelle after finding out she was UC?

since I'm so confused on who is who, I just do random missions even though I constantly get phonecalls to do someone's missions. Do missions disappear after some story triggers?

lol sorry but thanks for any help.

Thanks whoever.
Brucie is funny as all hell, but the fact that ya gotta do races(which I hated in GTAIII and the other games)or at least ONE race with him is annoying the hell outta me.

I mean, I don't mind the 'go fetch me this car' missions, but chasing for the #1 spot in a race is a pita.
The races actually aren't too bad in this game. I was absolutely dreading doing them to get my 100%. I always had problems with them in the previous games so I saved them for dead last. They ended up being a total joke. I used the same Turisimo for all of them and beat them all in 1 try each. Just grab a good car and be patient for the first lap or two to learn the course and then go all out. The competition usually makes a lot of mistakes and winning is pretty easy as long as you don't completely screw up.

helicopter mission for UL paper company is killing me! how the hell do you control the helicopter? I'm in the air for ten seconds and my mark has escaped again and again.

The Rockstar Social Club finally updated for me, so now I'm in the 100% club. For anyone that's trying to get in on the contest before it's over it seems like the site takes about 3 days to update so I'd plan on trying to finish by Thursday to make sure your stats get updated by the 19th.

Okay so it seems Sony has acknowlaged the issue. STILL haven't seen an offical comment from R*, but I haven't been keeping up the last few days so maybe it is somewhere.

I think they are waving the $150 fee (for out of warrenty systems) so it might be time to ship your systems in if you've had problems with them. Going to decided if I am going to do it, but I'll let everyone know if it is true.

I wonder what would happen if say... Metal Gear Solid 4 had these kind of issues? I mean, I thought GTA4 was a huge game but they seem to be trying to keep the problem swept under the rug. I don't blame them, but it has been a long, long time without a fix or even a statement regarding the issue.
I cannot complete the first Brucie mission. The driving controls in this game are impossible to use.:bomb:
Are you trying to gun the car as far as possible through the race? Because that doesn't work in this game (unfortunately!).

You have to sort of learn to combine the regular brake button with the e-brake button...if you finesse it just right, you can drift around the corners without crashing and without losing too much speed/momentum.

I found that even driving the racecar fairly conservatively in that "Number One" mission that I was able to win the race.

Agreed. Take the turns slowly and gun it on the straightaway with the Turismo (the car that looks like a Ferrari) and you should have no problem beating any of the races in the game. The AI tends to be overzealous with speed on the turns and lose control. I usually lose sight of them after the first lap.

Tip: You can always find a Turismo next to Faustin's house in the driveway.

Do you NEED to complete Brucie's "no. 1" Racing mission? i've completed almost everything leading to the last chapter and this is the only one left that's on my radar. I keep hoping Peregoni will call me to meet with Dimitri but it doesn't happen. I can't believe rockstar made these shitty racing missions. I keep dying on the motorcycle kills and the racing ones. I've played it at least a dozen times an I still can't win. Also, I updated to system 2.36 and my game freezes 3 seconds now when it never did before.
Are you trying to gun the car as far as possible through the race? Because that doesn't work in this game(unfortunately!).
It's not a race - Brucie's first mission is where you have to steal a cop car, log in to the criminal data base and then chase the guy and take him out.

It's fucking impossible.

7/10 times I get killed or arrested by the cops and the times I *do* manage to get the cop car, I tend to crash and the guy gets away.

I'm pretty close to the point where I am going to trade this in for MGS.

Between the ridiculously unstable online and the shitty driving controls, this game is turning out to be a big disappointment for me.

Like someone said about Contra 4, the game doesn't suck just because you do ;)

j/k, but I did try one cop mission and I was very puzzled by the results.

I'm supposed to take out a bunch of guys who stole a car, so they're in it and I'm ramming them and shooting them at the same time. It gets down to the point where they're all dead and the car is smashed up. Now for some reason it still has the red arrows above their heads, so I shoot them in the head, throw grenades, use an RPG, shotgun, Carbine, Bat, Kitchen Sink, my foot....NOTHING HAPPENS. Red arrows are still there.

I say "screw it", just drive around, I find a ramp nearby so I mess with that, I come back later and those guys are still lying there, so I decide to give it one last shot. I run one guy over and hit the other guy in the car (and they're still dead of course), all of a sudden, the arrows dissapear and I've completed the mission. Now I'm like :whistle2:s, then :whistle2:k, and after trying to figure it out :whistle2:?:whee:

Bikes control a whole lot worse than cars. there is one mission where you have to chase 2 bikers in a dark subway tunnel and shoot at them while trying to thread your bike through subway cars coming at you. you have no leeway. If you even touch a obstacle or make a wrong turn, it's mission over. I think I played it 40 times before I finally lucked out and beat it. Whoever made Race and chase missions at rockstar I hope your children burn in hell.

If all else fails and they're not giving me the 'saving content' thing that tells me I completed the mission, then I'll just stand there and pump the car/truck/whatever the aforementioned 'dead' body is in full of bullets till it's on fire. Then I just stand back and watch the explosion occur and once I hear that bit of music that comes on when it's saving, I know I'm done.

What irks me most, is that even if there's 20 guys shooting at you or attacking you, if you shoot ONE bullet and a passing cop sees it, forget about it, you've got an automatic wanted level.

If I'm having trouble finishing a mission and I'm low on bullets, I'll call the cops for backup and let them deal with the criminals.

That's what I did in the mission 'Holland Hills' or whatever from Francis. I let them deal with 95% of the thugs and then I gave a headshot to the lead bad guy from a distance. Then, I ran like hell and stole a cop car and gunned it outta there.

Just about every youtube video ever.

I seldom agree with you, Cochese...but that's exactly what I was thinking while watching the video. Just horrible.

Wow, I can't believe people are complaining this game is too difficult. So far its been the most forgiving difficulty of any GTA game I've played and I', about 2/3 of the way through the main storyline.

Well it is the first GTA game with controls that are halfway decent, pretty much all past GTA games were hard because the games controlled like shit.

Also if you get jumped by some guy he can easily take off 3/4 your HP if you didnt have body armor on. I can see the frustration since the missions can drag on and then you fail at the end.

See, that's the thing, this game has the same driving controls as the Xbox versions of the last gen trilogy and I hated the driving and driveby controls on that.

The targeting system in a car this time is deplorable. Trying to aim a targeting reticule while driving and having to brake and add gas realistically is just a pita.

Now, the targeting while not in a vehicle is rather nice, but it's still broken in my opinion. I've been doing headshot kills of enemies for years in the prior GTA games and the manual aim was something I didn't have to measure my pressure on a controller button to do before.

It's still a great game, but the targeting in a car is annoying as hell and the targeting while on foot still leaves a little to be desired. Otherwise, I've managed to get used to the in car controls finally, so using the triggers to gas and brake is no problem for me now.

I enjoy the targeting while in a car, it makes things more interesting and pretty cool. I can take out at least two cop cars behind me before having to reload or look ahead again.

When you say it's broken, do you mean it's easy to get HS kills in auto-aim? That is true if that's what you mean.

Yeah, it is easy to get the headshots in, but getting to where you can manually aim takes finite control, which I don't feel like exerting when I'm in the middle of a gunfight.

I actually enjoy that too, I'm so used to FPS games that it comes natural :p

I think all they need to do is make the point at which you go into target lock require much more pressure on the trigger to turn on.

Right now, it's too difficult to maintain that light pressure, adjust aim, and shoot, all with the slower animations.

Can someone here help me out on a mission? I don't want to spoil anything for anybody before 25 or so percent but you'll no what I'm talking about. There is a mission where a certain person is kidnapped and held hostage. I have no problem fighting all of the people off to get to this person but once I get to the guy holding someone you know hostage I have to "free aim" to kill him. How do I do this! Btw I'm not entirely sure its the free aim but I think that's what it said. Any help Is appreciated!

Get a sniper rifle for ez modez. I think you can buy one by the time you can do the mission.

Pull halfway down on the aiming button (left trigger) and
shoot the kidnapper in the head. I used the pistol for this, got as close as I quickly could, and clicked the right stick in to zoom a bit. Nailed'em on the first try.
YES
Nope. I was failing the racing mission and finally the GTA gods took pity on me and gave me the last mission and I didn't have to finish the no. 1 mission. thank god.

hm i keep forgetting that you can zoom in with R3 lol
When I did that mission I free aimed from across the room with the pistol.
took the shot and at first I thought I killed Roman but good thing I didn't cuz I didn't want to do that entire shoot out again lol
Beat it last night! I was at 67% when I beat it. First GTA game I ever beat. It was fun.
just beat it too. 59% completed. beat both scenarios too. The game was great but the story was disjointed and the endings were anti-climactic. They need to get mario puzo (if he's still alive) to write the next GTA. This was the most virtually real game I ever played. I live i NY and live in Brooklyn and Manhattan and am amazed how mucht the developers go right. the level of detail is mind boggling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Puzo

Mario Puzo isn't going to be able to work on any GTA games, since he's been dead for almost 9 years now. But, I agree that if they're gonna do the 'movie style' gameplay in the next one, they need to go all out and get a good writer since the only ending I kind of liked was the one from Vice City. Of course, that was an almost complete carbon copy of the ending of the movie Scarface.

I'm about 30 some percent of the way through the game myself, though I'm sure that instead of focusing on Untold Legends, which is my only other PS3 game right now, I'll probably just mess around in LC for a while, seeing if I can find all 200 pigeons.

when you guys are talking about % completion when beating the game, is this mission progress % or like total completion game % as in all missions etc.. b/c I was thinking mission progress % was the main story only %

Mine is mission progress basically, since I've only found a couple of the pigeons in the game and I didn't save after finding a couple of them, so my total shows only ONE found thus far. I've also RARELY done the stunt jumps in the games prior, so I doubt I'll ever do all of those really.

I like the fact that they glow RED when you're in a dark spot looking for them, it makes them a hell of a lot easier to find that way.

all you get for finding those flying rats is the annihilator helicopter. It's kinda a lame reward for all that legwork when you can just steal one from the airport.
