You just press X. That's what I do, takes you directly to the text.During the cellphone tutorial at the start of the game, I'm pretty sure it mentioned a shortcut to displaying your text messages. You're supposed to hit...some button...when the "new message" icon first pops up down by your HUD. Does anyone know what button it is? I can't figure it out and it's making me batty.
Mike Richards here from R*. Be alert around 12:00 GMT tomorrow for a patch for both the 360 and ps3 versions of GTA IV - we've been working 'round the clock to fix this issue, and seem to have found the problem. For those of you who care, we render the screen in the backbuffer and then flip it onto the front buffer. During those freezes, the code hits a glitch and stops flipping - the reason some of you manage to only have freezes for a few seconds while the sound still runs.
This isn't an official announcement, so the patch time is subject to change. It shouldn't, but if it does don't shoot me!
And I see you guys went through the trouble to create a special GTA IV section on the forums. Very nice.
P.S - Good luck with those last few missions for those of you who get there soon![]()
Indeed indeed. I visit this site on a regular basis to see what gamers think, but I don't have the time to bother with the social aspects of it.
That said, I know that this site is a culmination of news from other sites, and I figured it'd be nice for you guys to get the news first for a change.
I don't fully expect you to believe me now, and I see the validity of your skepticism. You should know tomorrow that my posting is valid.

If that's what you say then I shall indeed wait until tomorrow to confirm your posting. I don't like to be too judgmental so I'm not going to make any assumptions right now.
Have fun you guys.
I wasn't planning on coming back up here, but some things have changed.
I'm not with the main group working on the patch. They only needed me to fill in some blanks about the section I helped code. This lead to a misunderstanding on my part.
The patch deadline is 12:00 tomorrow - the date it will be uploaded to the servers is unkown. My supervisor says sometime this week most definitely. It could be tomorrow still, but it's not in our hands any more after we get it finished.
As for the pc version of GTA IV SerratedDrums.....well I've got to get back to work. Can't say on what though![]()
My apologies. I jumped the gun - live and learn, right?
At least you can look forward to the patch soon, as it IS going to be this week - probably in a couple of days.
After waiting two days for a word, any word from Rockstar about the problems plaguing some Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 owners trying to play Grand Theft Auto IV, I returned to the phone this morning to give tech support another call and see how things are on their end.
This time through I talked to a person who walked me through a much longer list of things I should check to make sure it wasn't effecting my gameplay:
Did my harddrive have enough space?
Do I have the latest firmware?
Is my screen saver turned off?
Is vibration turned off?
Are my video settings turned to 720?
Is Autosave off?
If none of those work, I was told, than I need to call back later to tech support to see if they've come up with a solution. The person I spoke with said they haven't heard a thing about a patch coming, but that the problem has been bumped up to their "second level" and a "fix" could arrive in a matter of minutes or three to four days. This elite team is "working around the clock" on a solution, I was told.
"It's like the cure for cancer, people have been working on that for 40 years."
Unlike Rockstar's rapid response to the problems that plagued Bully for the Xbox 360, their reticence to address the issues arising with Grand Theft Auto IV leaves everyone wondering how many people it effects and how serious it is or isn't. Perhaps it's only a small, vocal portion of those who bought the game, perhaps it's much more, but without Rockstar's direct input we have no way of knowing.
