Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info

For anyone who works at a GameStop, is there going to be any kind of early release? I remember back when they let people line up for San Andreas (preorders) the night before it came out here.

Curious.
 
Well of course OXM is going to give it a 10, GTA is like the Mass Effect of Action/Adventure games! I'm surprised they didn't give it a 11 lol.
 
My GS is planning on doing a midnight launch.

Personally, I don't know if I want to stand around 4 dozen+ people who want to play GTAIV that bad for several hours at a time. Yech.

I, too, am assuring myself that I won't ..

But I'm bound to be of a different mind over the next fourteen days ..
 
No joke. I promised my dissertation committee that I'd hand in a full draft in early-to-mid May, which gives me about 4-5 weeks to write 100 pages or so. That by itself isn't bad, but with the Metal Gear Online beta and GTAIV, man, the temptation will be overwhelming.

I'll just treat myself to 30 min sessions of GTAIV at that point for every 4 pages or so I write.

The worst news of all this? I'm only 13 hours into Lost Odyssey, and I just *know* I'll throw that dude, unfinished, by the wayside the moment GTAIV comes out.

Like I said before.... the pre-launch madness for Halo 3 was unbelievable here.

I went to GS the day before, and a bunch of people had lawn chairs lined up outside. Everyone that went into the store they started shouting "IF YOU WANT HALO THE LINE ENDS BACK HERE!", "We have CHECK LISTS of everyone who's in line!" just assuming you were there for Halo. One nerd even had his laptop playing Halo 3 music all day for everyone (even if you liked it or not).

I think I'm going to most likely skip the midnight launch as well. I'll probably go to sleep at a reasonable time and wake up bright and early to pick it up in the morning. :D

It's funny .. It sure seemed like April cleared out of new releases almost in deference to the GTA juggernaut.

But immediately pre-GTA would've been the absolute best time for a mid-range game to come out. The fans are starving! I know I'd have blown a lot of money just to get me by. I'm thinking of Iron Man, in particular. One week earlier and they'd probably have raked it in.

I'm somewhat lucky in this case to live in a lower population area.

My strategy will be to cruise the local Gamestop at midnight and see just how bad it is. If it looks untenable, I'll Nyquil up and hit the first store that opens.

I'll be taking Tuesday off ...

This will be the first time in many years that I've completely succumbed to my inner geek, and lack any ability to hide it.
 
I don't pre-order games really ever - what are the chances that there really aren't enough copies of the biggest game of the year to go around. I've got a $50 gift card for Best Buy that I got for Christmas and I've been saving it for GTA4... wow, I can't believe it's the middle of April and I haven't bought a single game in 2008 yet.

Yeah, it's been a somewhat lame year so far. The end of last wasn't so hot, either.

I normally do not pre-order. But the idea of a midnight release was too tempting, and this is the one title I am willing to make exceptions for.
 
Seen a video of a guy on youtube who has the game already. The video only showed the introduction and him showing off the case, and cd.
Guy must be related to or be part of the production team or something, considering it doesn't come out for another 2 weeks.

I saw it and it's fake. That's why I didn't bother posting it here.
 
Yep, I noticed it was fake as soon as I saw the disc. The label goes clear into the center, over where the hologram should be.

Ive had to punch my 2nd refurb 360's drive everytime on startup to get a game to read for months now, its on the verge of dieing and I do NOT want to sit 3 weeks (at least) without GTA4, and Live would cost me around 50 bucks which Id rather save up for Europe this summer, etc...

The DLC is the only thing thats making me want the 360 version, but I could just play it at my friends' houses and my first console was a PS and GTA became what it is today because of the PS2, so it just feels more normal to get it on PS3 for me...plus Ive heard its better on PS3, but im not all too sure about that. On top of that, all my friends/family back in England and France have PS3s so I could play with them.


Trust me, it wasn't easy deciding on which to get. MS made it a real bitch to pick and choose.

If I am not mistaken, those holograms are only for games that have gone gold.

I hate lines MORE than I like early, so I'm thinking of nixing my Gamestop pre-order and just ordering it from Amazon Prime. Just don't think I can deal with the parade of 12-year-olds at midnight at the mall.
 
I was hoping I'd be able to get through more of my backlog before the 29th rolled around, but now I'm just hoping to be able to finish up Orange Box and CoD4 before then. Most of my collection will be gathering dust for the next few months I think.
 
Hopefully I'll be working the closing shift so I can just swing by GS or something to pick up a copy if it isn't too bad. If not, then I finally have a use for my BB GC's the next morning.

Ok. I'm finally on the band wagon with this game, but I think I'm going to remain dark until its release. Hopefully we'll see a few places break the release date of this game.
 
Yeah, just what we need. More motivation for dumb fucks to go abuse the homeless...

Maybe they're annoying people on their cell phones. I wouldn't mind curb stomping those little text devils (the phones of course, well maybe both)...
 
does anybody know how long it takes to ship a red ringed 360, get it fixed and the get it back?

My fucking 360 red ringed last week and it should get to Microsoft tomorrow.

I think i will buy gta4 for both ps3 and 360 and then when my 360 gets back i will ebay the ps3 version.

I am so excited about this game!!!!!

Yea lol this is a great idea, man I haven't used my free prime membership either. Always been holding off on this and I actually got a ton of free shipping with the black friday sales so I didn't use it for Christmas like I was planning.

I tracked mine and a buddies from work and it took about 3 weeks from the time we shipped ours out until the time we got it back.

Depends on your location.. as it is shipped down to Texas. I live in Michigan, and after Microsoft received my box, I got it back about 3-4 days later.

Same here, I had a launch system go bad in less than 3 weeks and had it back within a total of 6 days. I too am in MI.
 
I just ordered this last night signing up for my Amazon Prime trial. I then added 4 bucks to have it shipped overnight, hell that's cheaper in gas if I had to drive to the store and back for me, I live in the country. Yea this is a great idea, thanks bmachine for mentioning it. Amazon will give me a code for 4 exclusive gamerpics for the preorder and an entry into the GTAIV sweepstakes, wooo lol
 
 
Not to nitpick, but I fear they cheaped out on the wheel/tire designs. Check the first pic. The tires on that SUV are directional, but the driver side tire tread is going the wrong way.

I hope this is a level of realism (the tire shop guy mounted the tire wrong on that particular vehicle) and not a blatant oversight.

I used to be a tire monkey, so I subconsciously check for things like that.

UPDATE: It's a definite oversight, because the tires on the car in pic #3 are facing the wrong way, as well.
 
Whats up with some of the pics looking like complete ass, graphics wise? I also hope the tree's look better when you play the game. Sure it's not the biggest thing in the world but Saint's Row had some nice looking tree's ;)
 
so i'm sure these questions have been answered but here it goes...

1) is gamestop still taking reserves for the limited edition? and is it going to be like the halo 3 where you can find it for dirt cheap three weeks later?

2) i know the 360 has downloadable content...will the ps3 have this in the future or is it just locked in a contract between rockstar and microsoft?

3) what does the ps3 have that the 360 doesn't? faster load speeds....better graphics?
