Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info
I just started a game and am trying to play through killing as few people as possible. A random guy started punching me and I tried to find 911 so I could get the police to arrest him, but I couldn't find out how to dial the number and he killed me :(.

How do you dial a number?
Hit up twice, as said earlier in the thread.

The driving is fine, taking corners is going to make you slide like in real life. I think they got the driving physics down pat and I love it, it makes me prefer some vehicles in the game over others, just like in the real world.
Has anyone experienced severe texture and graphic problems? I remember seeing something about graphic noise and horrible (and I mean 16 bit--bad) lighting. I can't find anything on it now. I was turned on gta after taking a 2 hour break, and notice the sky was all blocky and weird, then the lights went all crazy, and got severe texture pop-up. it was just really bizarre. Restarted it twice, and adjusted my display settings and no avail.

Then put in skate (since the graphics are similar) no problems. Played it for 10 minutes; popped gta back in and it was back to normal.

Is my 360 dying again? Or is has anyone experience this strange glitch in gta or any other game for that matter?
Sounds like your 360 is overheating, most likely vid card.

I love the driving, I fly around the city and take corners with ease lol. Just need to look at your map judge the width of the street your turning onto and tape brake/ebrake as needed. Love going sideways around corners lmao
Select Roman on your cellphone and then pick "Car Service".
Hmm, that's what I though too, but I don't have that option anymore. Is it only available during certain times of the day?

Man Katt Williams is a funny dude. I can't believe I'm turning on my 360 to watch a television set lol. I'm loving all the little things about the game that they have. Yea I was just doing some tricks with a dirt bike on the beach, seriously fun and humorously realistic.

The game just keeps getting worse for me. The checkpointing is atrocious. You can retry missions, but most missions begin with you driving several minutes just to get to where the mission really begins. Sometimes you can call Roman for a ride (which still takes time as you have to listen to that message again and wait for the ride to show), but more often than not he won't have a ride available. Sometimes you can take a cab... if there's any around. So most of the time you'll have to just drive all the way back. Even worse is that a lot of missions are extremely vague or cheap. One had me following a guy, but I kept losing him, resulting in me losing lots of money and time getting back to the point where I could even begin to follow him (I'm now just reloading my saves so I don't lose all my money on hospital bills). The worst mission I've encountered so far dealt with me having to take a guy out at a train platform, but a cutscene plays when you enter the area and then when the cutscene ends you're in the middle of battle with no cover while enemies machine gun you. It seems like most missions expect you to take cover or follow someone right away before you even get a chance to get your bearings. Argh!

And maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems like I'm constantly alerting the cops and I'm not very good at shaking them. I can usually make it out of the circle, but then they'll still come after me. I've tried switching cars, or hiding in alleys, but that doesn't seem to help. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here.

I really want to see whatever it is that everyone else sees in this game, but so far it mostly just seems like an exercise in tedium.
Hmm, that's what I though too, but I don't have that option anymore. Is it only available during certain times of the day?
I think it's always available as long as your relationship with Roman is OK. Check your stats...I'm pretty sure you've got to be at 100% with him to get access to his "perk". You might have to take him out to play pool or for a burger!

Yeah, the saving system for this game is abysmal. I mean, 1 place to save IN THE ENTIRE GAME. Oh, you can quick save, but turning the game off = you didn't save it.

Also, this might be a problem on my end, but I'm having MAJOR pop-in issues (how to clear cache, anyone?) with the game. For example
when going on the subway for the first time, when entering the station for a second I see a Gray Blob in front of me which is replaced by stairs
. Oh, if you've seen the "Tree of Doom" gif, it's not as bad as that, but comparable.

Oh, and cheats disable certain achievements. I don't know if it's a permanent thing or not. When I got that message I reloaded the save so I had no cheats available. So hopefully I can get the walk away achievement.
How do I participate in missions that don't involve either Roman or Michelle?
play the game for more than 3 hours......

you do realize that anytime you do anything of importance it auto saves? That includes side mission, main missions, and hanging out friends/gf. I have yet to save once at my safe house and I'm 14 hours deep.

Man I am no fan-boy, I'll admits it got its faults, but jeez every website I go to people who either haven't played it, or haven't taken the time to figure how to play it are complaining about absurd stuff. I don't mind the criticism of the driving or the story, but really when I hear people (on other sites mainly) say things like, "this game sucks! You can't take cover at the beginning of the game". I know I sound like my Mom back in 1992 but sersiously she'd be right on this, "well...why don't you read the manuel".

I know that it auto saves after every mission, but earlier today I was in the situation where I was just messing around for about 30 minutes where I got a multiplayer friend invite and I had to spend 10 minutes driving to the safe house.

The game doesn't suck. On the contrary, I think it's great. It's hilarious. Best comedic game in years as far as I'm concerned. Like I said for the pop-in issues, it might just be me.

What did you do in that 30 minutes that you needed to save?

If the game didn't autosave, it wasn't very important.

Free mode is epic. I wish I had sixteen friends
so we could do a city bus drive-by
. I'm going to sink dozens and dozens of hours into wandering around and creating as much chaos as possible.

I've spent about 7 hours with it and I spent most of the first 2 hours giggling like an idiot over murdering civilians and watching their reactions. but once I actually got into the meat of the game I found it a tremendous letdown. So far it's got poor driving, poor shooting, a poor script, and really poor checkpointing. It's not without its' merits. It is after all the most detailed game I've ever played. But all the detail in the world can't make up for the fact that it's just plain not very fun to play. I'll give it a bit more time though before I make up my mind.

Is this game worthwhile? usually i wait it out till a game is $40 or less before buying. but i can use the amazon hd dvd $50 code they sent which makes it basically free. should i wait it out for a lower price or get it?
Good lawd this is awesome on live. I need more people from CAG on my list tho. If you want invite me. :D
I'll add you, but I am going to play single for one more day, before I jump onto live. Thursday after 10 pm I'll be raring to go.

I don't think that's it, he likes me 96% and respects me 100%. It might be because
i'm at the point where he's being held hostage or whatever

Nevermind, It must have not saved yesterday after I unlocked this perk, because as I was just driving around I got a call from Roman offering me his cab service.

Well, I'm 3 1/2 hours in and I'm already loving it. At first I hated the driving controls, but once you realize you can't just floor it and slam on the brakes every time you drive it gets quite managable. That, and I stole one of the Corvette looking cars and that handles quite nicely.

Just looking at the small area of the map I've been exploring compared to the massive area of the entire game, I'll be surprised if I ever know this city as well as the original Liberty City. The GPS system is a godsend.

Also, as someone else mentioned, the police are brutal. I've only had a 2 Star wanted level, but they're persistent even at that. I haven't had any trouble shaking them for the most part though.

Can you find stores, clubs, etc. without doing a mission or date to one of them first? Id like some better clothes, but i dunno if they are closed until later in the game, or i can just go find them now.
No planes in this game, due to 9/11.
Lame. Political correctness at its worst. Just don't allow them to do anything bad or vicious or whatever. They did that for Flight Simulator.

Very good game. Some great innovations, but basically more of the same stuff weve grown to love about GTA. There is a great deal of driving to be done.
haven't tried the multi-player yet. tomorrow, lets get together CAGS

If BB gives me my f*ckin rewards back then I should get it tomorrow. If I get enough single player in, maybe I'll try some multiplayer.

You set out either with the intention to not like it or the idea that you probably wouldn't like it, so your impressions are not exactly a surprise. Your opinions of the voice acting and story are just zany. It's like you're playing a different game than the rest of the world. I will say that it sounds like you're focusing too much on missions and overlooking the 1,000 other great things to do and enjoy in the game.

OMG I just tried all, well almost all, of the multiplayer modes and they are so much fun. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Race are really fun but GTA Race, Turf War, and Cops and Crooks are seriously sick. Singleplayer can wait, I'm going to burn up my 360!

Who here can seriously say that they completed any of the GTA games other than III maybe. San andreas just had too much sh*t, vice city had a better story, but still it was so much stuff. After about a month or two of playing I think most people don't really play the missions anymore. The way I've seen it, its supposed to be a "sandbox" so I just end up typing in the cheat codes and going for broke, trying to see what chaos I can make. But I think now with multiplayer involved, maybe people wont be doing that as much, but its still fun to do so.

No offense, but it just sounds like your not very good at this game... I find it actually pretty easy to get away from the cops, and I have only died once in 10 hours of gameplay...

Absolutely, sir. Absolutely.

I played a bit with Twen and his posse, and laughed my ass off. Literally, I have no ass anymore. ;)

Despite my skepticism, the multiplayer, in its fifteen modes, works, and is incredibly fun. Of course, one of my few complaints, the camera, becomes bothersome in multiplayer, but, good gravy, is it fun to race helicopters and boats, or play Cops and Robbers and dive out of a car while your pal, riding passenger, plays Juggernaut and crashes into a whole squad of popo. They really need to fix the multiplayer, though, as I dropped out of, and couldn't connect to, games too many times.

San Andreas was actually the only GTA that I completed, as far as the single player is concerned (not even close to 100% though, not a big fan of collecting crap). I liked the characters more than Vice City - VC's story lost interest for me once you get the mansion.

In IV, I'm about 5-6 hours into the story line so far, but so far I'm definitely hooked. Aside from the main quest, I'm much more interested in the side stuff than in previous games; the writing and voice acting goes a long way toward keeping me doing the extraneous missions.

Heh, I too feel like I'm playing a different game than the rest of the world. I mean, when a game usurps Ocarina of Time at gamerankings.com as the greatest game of all-time by over a full percent, I take notice. So I wanted to like this game, but mostly haven't. Maybe I have been focusing too much on the missions, but I'm not sure what else there is to do really. I've tried going on killing sprees, but I always end up getting killed by the cops and lose more money than I've gained, so I have to reload anyway. I guess there's the mini-games, but they don't amuse me that much. And the taxi missions are just more driving which the game has more than enough of anyway. Maybe I'll unlock more cool stuff later. The helicopter and boat look neat, so I'll try to keep an open mind.
 I find myself using taxi's and roman's taxis more than actually driving. I love it due to the fact that distance is no longer an issue.
No kidding, being able to use the taxi's is a godsend!

First thing I thought was "wow, this city is so huge and detailed." Second thing I thought: "how the fuck are we supposed to find hidden packages?" It was easy in the old games because the texture work was simple...you didn't have to strain your eyes finding stuff. I walked on top of the bridge in one of the first in-game days and picked up a pistol I didn't even see, some bitch immediately gets out her cellphone and within 30 seconds the cops went all six stars on my ass (probably an immediate six because of the "terror threat" that has the bridge shut down) and I learned my lesson that you don't cross that bridge yet.

The detail in the game is amazing. Cars headlights and tail lights don't work if you damage that quarterpanel, flies are hovering over open trash cans, a couple garbage men now hang off the back of the Trashmaster. The stuff people say when you bump into them is priceless. Then entire game is at least 100x more evolved than even what San Andreas accomplished since GTA3.

Game of the year. Absolutely no contest. People I know who loathe Grand Theft Auto are even more blown away than I am.

You're making this statement in April? Sure, it's a great game, but let's not jump ahead of ourselves here--yet.
