Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info

So...I just beat it. The final mission was pretty tough. It had
lots of variety
. I beat the game in just under 27 hours...but no Liberty City Minute.

Ah, I did the same thing. I had cops shooting at me though, and Vlad told me to go get a car wash so it wouldn't be dirty :).

the middle island has 2 new shops ( one place is for suits, the other is sorta like the GAP). Besides the russian place(which has terrible clothes) @ start of the game you have to wait awhile to get new threads. I was about 15hours in before I unlocked the 2nd large island with the new shops. I did do a lot of side missions & drove everywhere so it probably take people a lot less then that.
 
I'm still looking for gloves .. Starting to think they're just not in there.

I realized the clothing options would be toned down, but it really feels sparse at the moment.
 
Seriously, a fucking hardcore station on the radio? That's the most badass thing ever. The electro station doesn't look half bad either. The celebrity DJs are really just the icing on the cake. I must have this game!

lol yeah I kept surfing after that... so it was a while later. I walked out of the building...

Then noticed I had a 4 star level and was surrounded by cops. I managed to get into my car and after a very intense car chase in which I had to swap cars twice and drive places so the copter couldn't watch me. I managed to lose it.
 
This has probably been discussed before but the controls are pretty bad (as evident by the 80 topics at GameFAQs when I did a search for "controls). With that being said, anyone find an easy way to make turns? The car camera centers back too slowly so I'm often making blind turns in not knowing what is around the corner and thus almost always hitting a car. It is even worse when I have to do a three-point turn. My only temporary fix is to quickly hit the R-stick to center the camera but that gets annoying.

I almost wish they had a Halo-esque control and camera system when turning so I could see what the fuck I am turning into.

Yeah according to the gta map that comes with the game there arent any clothing shops on the third island. So seems as though we are stuck with those 3 different shops. Hopefully more will be available via DLC.

I also dont like the new controls. Its like all the cars make wide turns. There is no way to make a sharp turn unless you break, and then you start spinning out of control.
 
I just do the same thing I do in lots of games. I adjust the camera with my right thumb while turning/braking with the left thumb and RB aka ebrake with a little LT(middle finger) as needed to keep the car under control.
 
Okay, I got a pretty big problem. My multiplayer isn't working at all. My NAT is open and I can't join peoples invites or invite people to a private match.. I haven't tried public. Any help?

I know there are others complaining of the same thing. I can join public matches and play with no problem. I haven't tried private matches at all.

Speaking of multiplayer, does anyone know if weapons gained in multiplayer carry over to single player? I know I didn't have a shotgun in single player, but then I played a multiplayer deathmatch game, and when I went back to single player, I had a shotgun. Anyone else notice this?
 
At what point can I get to the main island? I am a couple main missions after you
get the new safehouse after the fires.

I can see now how a lack of a checkpoint system in some missions can be frustrating. I just tried the
Deconstruction for Beginners
mission. I was setting it up so nicely and being methodical by
using the cranes and picking the targets off from a distance
. I get to the last target and I decide to drive over to his side and my car just blows up. It wasn't even in bad condition. I set it there as a getaway.
Are there explosives in the area or something? Why the hell did it just explode randomly? And no, I didn't set off a grenade. I had the sniper rifle going in and I switched over to the Uzi in the car. I never even touched the LB button.
 
I love euphoria. a few days ago I was forced into RPGing a chopper down. as it exploded in flames I turned around to enter my getaway car and right as I walk up to the front car door, the helicopter pilot's charcoal black burning body lands right at my feet infront of the door lifeless... that totally blew me away and made me lol

a few of us, including me, have that same exact problem. I hope rockstar fixes it or something seeing it's really annoying. most player matches are fine, but ranked matches have never worked at all for me :(
 
I tried some multiplayer and I've got to say I'm disappointed, at least in Ranked. I say that because NO ONE is playing. The game shoots you into the first available room, but some of the time (1 out of 5 currently) you're sent to an open room where you're host and no one else is there.

Also, some things about achievements are bugged I think
like Dwayne not being available...EVER
so I can't get the Friend Achievement.

Read it again: After meeting all possible friends, the ones left alive all like you above 90%.

Seems plenty plausable to me. Pretty much means anybody left on your cell phone you'll need to go out and do darts/bowling/hit up bars or strip clubs/whatever to get their "like" up towards you.

I beat the game. The person I mentioned IS ALIVE, but he likes me about 65%, and I cannot get in contact with him. He's the only one.

Ugh, glad it's not just me... I really hope they fix this :(
 
So far my complaints with the Multiplayer are as follows;
  • If i start a room, i can't adjust the number of friend slots
  • Once i start a room, i can't change the game type (without playing the current game) without losing hosting abilities
  • Games take forever to load
  • No way to leave a game that isn't loading without restarting the game
  • No way to instantly mute people (like in Halo 3 or COD4). More about this below.
When it comes to the kids, I would place this as my #2 priority because all they do is talk shit. It's like they see GTA and immediately think they need to talk like a 'gangster'. Very annoying and i NEED to be able to quickly mute them without being killed in-game.

They also need to fix the voting/kicking of players and the way that system works. No one really understands how to do it (go to the bottom of the list and select the player, press A). You should be able to select the players' name and vote, simple as that. No having to scroll to the bottom of the list. Also, host should have complete control over an unranked game, including being able to boot players without the vote system.

I played ranked matches for about 3 hours straight last night/early this morning without a single hiccup. The only real problem I had was with the first round quitters in Cops and Crooks (One for All). They get killed and can't respawn, so they just quit, so then round 2 is usually way out of balance.
 
I cannot for the life of me get the "Three strikes in a row" achievement. If it were "Three splits in a row" or "Make every pin fall over and let one fucking pin wobble until it finally settles three times in a row", I'd be all set.

Just so you know, there are two different endings, luckily you chose the same as me so the scenarios are the same.

I just flew really high up to his right. I thought you had to shoot him while he was in the boat, but he'll crash on Happiness Island and you continue the chase on foot, so just stay back but in range of his boat.

I'm kinda mad that
Dwayne
will not contact me after beating the game. Meaning I'd have to go through the entire game AGAIN to get the Friendship achievement. Super annoying.

Well I beat the game and called him and I have no problem contacting him. Neither does my friend, but of course sometimes contacts are unavailable. (God knows it took me fifty phone calls to get one particular guy to talk to me. After that I didn't have too much trouble.)

What was his like percentage? Mine's like 55-65% range for him. At what time were you able to make contact with him? I need to boost his like for me.
 
well, just beat the game and can say I'm very happy. Nikko has to be the most likable character I've come across in gaming in a while, with solid snake being the last one I can remember.

Oddly I felt Nikko is alot like Jack Bauer :lol:

also, the game had some moments of Mass Effect feel to it (ie. choices).


I can finally make it a point to just fuck around in the game. I've barely spent time exploring the city or doing random shit because I wanted to get the story out of the way... time to fuck around.

I contacted him wednesday in the early morning. Right now I'm bowling with him in attempt to get the achievement and it's the end of the second game at 6:54AM.

EDIT: % is at 40 right now.
 
Disk Read Error...what the fuck! And now my GTA IV disc is scratched on the outer ring and it was perfect when i received it. Oh, and Halo 3 is getting DRE's now too. Thank god i'm under warranty until May 20th. Coffin should be here next week, fucking Christ!
 
I haven't had the biggest problem but I play at night when all the kiddies are usually sleeping but that doesn't mean I don't run into retards. Turn down the volume on your headset, problem solved. Don't let them get to you, that's what they want lol. Man after every date I get some, lol.

I tried around the time you mentioned (early Wednesday, 12n-8am) and still nothing. I keep getting his answering machine.

in terms of depth, almost. the story aspect I never expected to be epic as I never had any presumptions about the story to be honest. It still blows my mind and is definitely epic, but not 100% what I was thinking. I still stand by what I said before release, but with a minor mental shift I guess :lol:
 
i cant fuckin beat this one mission
the one where you rob the bank with packie, everytime i get out to the street i cant lose my wanted level, everytime im out of the area another cop pops up and i somehow end up dying. anyone have any tips?
 
So what day are we going to setup to get a game going? Kind of tired of getting in games and hearing half my team go "Hey I found a bike!". Really I found the objective and got massacred by the 5 members of the other team
