Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info

Ah. That pic gets my thing springin :whistle2:o

So last night I noticed that The Love Triangle strip club appears on the map when you're on a date with your girlfriend, wanting to see if it would cause any conflict, a funny scene, and maybe make a woman with OCD flip out, I took Michelle up there. About a 5 minute drive later I found out she does absolutely nothing, just follows you, and there isn't a yellow activation point to be seen. So much for that idea.

By the way, I apologize to the few people who have been inviting me to games, I'm letting some family members try out the game and am having a blast just watching them screw around and play the game differently. Keep sending'em though, I'd love to get some CAG matches going.

If anyone is having problems with frame rate, pop ins all stupid things try clearing your 360 hdd cache.

To clear the cache Go to the system blade and then select memory.
Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

Performing this function will also clear any software updates.

How come Niko never has to go to the bathroom? The game should have gotten 9.9's because of this...completely uncalled for! Also to everyone having multiplayer problems, I'm right there with you. I wanted to play with that taint sniffer Zeus Rambo (aka Matt Young), but I kept getting booted after they joined from the party (free mode), really annoying. Don't really like the music either, other than that I love the game.

Edit: I forgot to say that if Frank Thomas was in this game it would be the best game ever. Unfortunately it will forever remain behind this great title http://www.gamespot.com/genesis/sports/bighurtbaseball/index.html?tag=result;title;5
I gotta try to calibrate my TV, the overscan on this game drives me nuts.
Glad someone else mentioned this. I have an very old Sony CRT HDTV. When I play at 1080i, the right hand of the screen is slightly cut off and the map icon is clipped just a little bit on the left.

It is annoying to me so I have been playing on 480p instead where there is no overscan. The only way to fix the issue on my set is to go into the service menu and I don't think I will be doing that.

I hope all 360 games don't do this to me (this is my first game).

Yeah, going into the service menu is just asking for trouble. The fix would be nice improvement, but if anything happens it can turn into a really really big problem.
I had the same problem.

It's more like a freeway than a bridge and it doesn't count unless you go underneath a certain portion.

I'm guessing it's the same one for you because I and a lot of people were having trouble finding this last one.

It's going to be one on the left of this picture.

If I'm wrong, here's a map with all the bridges marked:

http://www.achieve360points.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80341
Huh that's weird because I've gone under all of them. You may be right about the one on the left about going under a specific part. I was so desperate last night that I managed to just barely go under the bridge in Middle Park. Ruined at least 6 Helis trying to do it.

EDIT: Just did that bridge and looks like you were right. I've flown under it a couple times before but I guess it didn't count. To trigger it I had to fly above the middle cement "gate" under the bridge instead of just over the water and under the bridge. So thanks for your help because it was driving me crazy for 1.5hours trying to find it.

It wasn't just you. Well, maybe that was part of it, since you never got brought along with the party in COD4 either, but we tried more games and kept getting kicked. We were able to play maybe 3 games out of 10 attempted.

Jesus Christ. Can anybody honestly tell me they understand WTF Little Jacob is saying without subtitles? Heck, with them I'm still lost...

I didn't have any trouble with multi, apart from the dude I was playing with being a complete moron.

I've had lots of game freezing moments, even though only momentary, and the overscan - which really sucks.
Jesus Christ. Can anybody honestly tell me they understand WTF Little Jacob is saying without subtitles? Heck, with them I'm still lost...
I find it more important to understand the heart of what he is saying ..

Otherwise, I just go check the briefing afterwards.

No, I didn't understand at all. I just turned the subtitles on. They're distracting, but you can see what Jacob's saying, and ti shows the English translation when Niko or Roman speak Russian.

From GameFAQs:

I was going through the internet and did the lucky search (name might be wrong) and kept hitting the more sites button and a site titled "Lucky Lacy's Childs Pageant" showed up and i clicked on it and an FBI warning showed up saying i was looking at child pornography and so i exited and logged off and i got a 4 star wanted level from the site. As soon as i walked out the cops gunned me down... I find that to be an awesome easter egg. I was laughing my a** off while trying to get out the door without dying.

So awesome.
when do you start meeting new hoez lol... michelle is boring already..

also where can you get on the "internet".. where is the pc?
There's a mission where Roman has you set up an e-mail account. After that, you can go to the internet cafes whenever you want.
Jesus Christ. Can anybody honestly tell me they understand WTF Little Jacob is saying without subtitles? Heck, with them I'm still lost...
LOL I just played the first couple of missions where I meet him yesterday. I was driving and trying to read the subtitles at the same time and really still couldn't understand 25% of what he was saying.

Anyone else find this game to be more than a bit overrated? The combat is sluggish and imprecise (the auto-aim is inconsistent at best), the camera is always needing to be adjusted, car controls aren't tight, multiplayer is a bit confusing and unbalanced, and single player is pretty much the same as the last gtas. Why all the hype?

Nope. I wasn't even going to buy the game at launch, originally, but I got hyped up a couple weeks before the release and ended up buying it on Tuesday. I am pretty much a GTA noob... I got the double pack of III/Vice City for the Xbox a couple years back, but I maybe spent 6 hours on III and never opened Vice City. But GTA IV is one of the best games I have played in years.

Turn off autoaim. It was default off for me and I like it much more because it gives you significantly more control.

Even though I am severely disappointed in the gameplay so far, I can respect a 10 score. Much like Mass Effect and Bioshock, the story is being weighed heavily in the scores. It is interesting now that the depth in games has increased, there are top tier games that some people don't enjoy. It's getting more and more like movies. It used to be that the majority of a game's score was driven by the gameplay, which pretty much meant if you enjoyed the genre you would enjoy any highly rated game.

Another part of it is that this game is improved in many aspects over the previous games. If they were 9.5's, then there isn't much room to maneuver.

I guess I just can't get over the flaws in the gameplay. I don't play many games for the story. I tried turning auto-aim off, but that only helped a little. Plus, in multiplayer you have to do whatever the host chooses, which has mostly been auto-aim on. I probably have played too much GRAW, Halo, and Cod and have been spoiled by their tight combat/shooting controls.

I haven't had any problem with the auto-aim, after adjusting to the new vehicles physics I think think the driving is just fine.

My major problem is that the mission design is a step back. San Andreas had a ton of variety with it's missions, I'm about halfway through the story in GTAIV and the missions feel like they were taken right from GTAIII.

What can anyone say? It's a GTA game. Those people who are enjoying it aren't enjoying it for the controls. They're probably relieved just that they aren't as bad as previous games in this series.

If the controls are getting in the way of your enjoyment here, then I can't see it getting much better for you. A linear game will always have a tighter, more-controlled environment.

Anyone have issues with the sound levels? Particularly dialogue being too low at times then going back to normal? In general I have to turn my TV up almost double what other games play at. I've got SFX and Music down half way, but every once in a while the voices get quiet for no apparent reason.

Definitely overrated, but good either way.

Yeah, I'm getting that too. I only have to turn my TV up about three notches though.

I had to turn off the autoaim, seems generally better now.

I find the look system while driving to be better inverted but I prefer it not to be inverted when I'm walking on foot. I wish I could customize it that way. I also hate having to constantly adjust the camera while driving or sometimes walking. That coupled with the inverted problem make the controls sorta frustrating.

I understand to sprint you tap A or hold A but when I tap A he will start sprinting and then stop and start walking again. What am I doing wrong? I wish it would be the other way around where he would run constantly or hold A to walk.

Perhaps you aren't tapping rapidly enough? That's what it sounds like to me.

Yeah I have to turn my stereo up double the amount I normally do.

So how do you hail a cab? I took Michelle out drinking last night and got hammered - when we went outside I was trying to get a cab but I kept pressing Y and hijacking it which is not what I wanted to do...

I'm pretty sure you hit the left button to hail it first. Then when it swings around you can get into it.

Assuming you've gotten the ability to hail a cab, left bumper whistles for one, then hold Y to hop in.

I feel the same way about the game being overrated!
1. Driving is crap with the new physics
2. auto-aim blows (I know you can turn it off)
3. Story is deep BUT still reminds me of San Andreas
4. I have it for 360 and draw distance sucks (seems like i could see further with PS2 versions of 3?)
5. Having to change the camera angle all the time blows too!
5. Final Score 8.5 not even close to a perfect 10

Just my thoughts :)

My perspective of common GTA IV critiques:

'Goddamnit! Driving sucks! Shooting sucks! Graphics suck! Minigames suck!

... I can't wait to play again!'

I agree with all points. The camera is SO frustrating. I didn't have this problem with Oblivion or Crackdown's camera. For a game that deals so much with driving, combat, and shooting, it doesn't do any of them exceptionally well. I don't like hating on this game, but I was so excited to get it based on the fantastic reviews. The reviews and scores didn't do a good enough job of pointing out these flaws. I think the game critics sold into the hype and pressure way too much.

I played for about 45 minutes last night. I thought the camera was average and the controls are really lacking. I know driving takes a LOT to get used too, and even on foot I felt the controls were a bit wonky. Still though, fun game....I barely did anything thus far....still don't have a gun.

Lesson Unlocked: DO NOT BUY A GAME BASED ON REVIEWS/HYPE

I agree with driving and the camera. Its like when you hit a brake then all of a sudden you spine out like the roads are made of ice. If you dont break the cars always make big wide turns that make you end up run into a house or something. I wish you could actually make a tighter turn. Doesnt seem unrealistic if turns were more tighter.

Camera is annnoying at times. It seems its connected to nikos movement. Where in other games the camera and character were not linked together. If you know what i mean.

Plus it wouldnt have hurt if the driving camera was a little higher. IMO its too low and i cant see in front of the car enough. But its always been that way. I dunno why they keep doing this. To make it harder to drive?

One thing that is different is that this is the first gta game where im dissapointed in graphics. I guess because i had an idea of how great it would look. But all the past gta games i didnt even care about the graphics at all. I mean it does look great, just a bit different than i expected. But not anything to complain about.

Yeah, I had to go in and turn the music volume almost all the way down so I can hear what they're saying instead of just some talking over the radio.

I know the game has its problems, but I can personally overlook them just for the intractability of the city. I went running and pushed a dude last night and he started "getting smart" with me so I kept running by pushing him; eventually he started to pick a fight. Or there's the time I got in a car and would drive, then stop, drive then stop, and the guy in back of me kept smashing into the back bumper; he eventually got pissed off and got out of his car to fight me. When I got out and started fighting him, there was another two people fighting (who apparently got into an accident because of me too) in the same intersection.

I'm impressed with the immersion of the game. I know there's people who don't care for it in the same way I didn't care for any of the Haloz. That's your opinion and I respect that.
I'm 6+ hours into the single player and I'm not really having fun with this game. I appreciate the quality of the story and scope of the game, but the fact that I'm not really having fun has me noticing every single thing wrong with the game. I could easily type a full page just on the issues I've noticed so far. The biggest bummer is that I'm failing 33% of the missions I attempt and it always seems like I'm failing over stupid shit that isn't even my fault.

I wanted to finish up the single player story before going online, but I may have to change my mind because so far GTA is the biggest gameplay disappointment I've ever had with a game. Maybe the MP will change that.
How the hell do you manage to fail 33 percent of the missions in the first 6 hours? Those were all ridiculously easy
Assuming you've gotten the ability to hail a cab, left bumper whistles for one, then hold Y to hop in.
Ahhh - I didn't know you had to unlock the ability to hail one. I guess I'm SOL for the moment. Thanks.

Man for those of you hate the idea of having to go back to the mission if you fail (I disliked this too, and I saw at least two posts about this) all you have to do is hit reply when you get a text about failing the mission and it auto restarts the mission for you. Jeez, I feel like an idiot I'm 26% into the game and I just figured this out!

As for the "driving sucks" its realistic and very well done, don't say it sucks just say you dislike realistic driving physics, because they are not "bad". If you want the old Gta feel find a "race car" those things are outrageous to drive and very similar to how a sports car should, and feels closer to the driving in the older installments. Also spend some time driving, its a blast once you get used to it.

The camera has 4 positions while driving and 3 when walking. You can also adjust with the right analog stick, and click it in to auto adjust.

My main complaint (asside from the weird camera work when you are turning in your car) are the combat controls. Why is it so slow and unresponsive when I'm trying to fight/shoot someone. Mainly fist fights, it takes almost 2 seconds for me to throw a punch. I can't even manage to punch a cop.

Agreed about the driving. For the person who says the roads feel like ice, what do you expect to do when you're driving a car, going about 40MPH and up then hit the brakes and turn? It took a little while for me to adjust to the driving in this versus previous GTA games, but it's just fine.

Anyone who messed with the brightness and other video settings now have it nearly impossible to read the cellphone, at least during the day?

As for the driving, I think a lot of us didn't want the simulation experience. I really don't care for the realistic Niko running out of breath after running for awhile either. Oh well, I really hope Crackdown 2 comes out some day....

wow there is a lot of hate for the game and its only been out a few days..

personally i like the game it is more interesting to me then San Andreas was and it looks a lot better.. the art direction is great.

the car hand brake controls seem to always over do it even if you just press it.. although I love the targeting system/shooting system much better..
