FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.
It's great to know you got more with the trade in, edge, etc, but it'd help to just post the base trade in values to avoid confusion.

Fair Enough:

PS3 Base TIV's

DAO 19.25
MW2 23.00
Borderlands 23.25

Yeah its not rocket science, MP games like Battlefield are worth buying new to me, games i'll finish in 10-15 hrs i.e. Bioshock 2, Killzone, Infamous, I can wait until GS has their inevitable B2G1 free deal.

Here are my trades from today:

PS3:
DiRT - $14.40
IL 2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey - $12.80
Guitar Hero: World Tour - $4.00
Fallout 3 (not GOTY) - $9.21
Fairytale Fights - $13.19
CoD: MW2 - $36.80

PSP:
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee - $1.99

Total: $92.39

Not too shabby of a deal, especially seeing as Fairytale Fights is pure profit due to getting it for free from the BB deal a while back.

Okay, updated the lists with all the values up to now except for birdrules & nflsonic lists above. I will be updating the database and get back to updating values in the list again. Also will update the 1st post with the state information as well.

EDIT: nflsonic, any way of posting the base values?

There's a lot I want to buy this year, like the new Zelda for the Wii, Halo: Reach, Fable 3, Project Natal, and E3 is not even here yet.

Bummer, I know this can be a good deal but some of those things I just don't get why you traded in. Most of those Rpg's would have sold on amazon quickly and for much more.

Honestly, the first couple of days are pretty much terrible. After that everyone seems to slow down on the trading. Mainly because in the first days the values don't drop super quick but after that they start taking a major drop. If Mass Effect 2 stayed $35 after tonight I would be VERY surprised. I would expect to see it at $25 tomorrow, if not a little lower.

I especially went "WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!" to Skies of Arcadia and Nocturne.

Just traded in a couple DS games

2/22/10

Professor Layton and The Curious Village - $15.00
Professor Layton and The Diabolical Box - $15.00

After 50% plus Edge I got $48 for the two games.

Seriously GS may be in completely dire need of games but with certain flukes like these and ME2 they cannot seriously think that their stores are not going to be abused as hell this week.

Yeah, but unlike BBV, GS can quickly change TIVs. They'll realize the ME2 "error' very quickly. If you're even thinking about trading that one in, you better go now.
I especially went "WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!" to Skies of Arcadia and Nocturne.
I know, there's always a better deal somewhere. Been sitting on these games for a while, and decided to unload them at GS because it's quick, easy, and this is a fairly decent deal.

The clerks at Gamestop were "pretty sure" that sales tax applied to games sold on store credit.

The State of Ohio Tax site is cryptic (imagine that) but seems to confirm.

"For all other sales [not-auto], a trade-in allowance does not reduce the tax base."
I think that was in response to you posting the trade values with the 50% and not the base values as stated.
Wow... I can't believe some of the games you traded in, and how little you got for them. Such a quality list with so many games worth much much more than the TiV, with or without a 50% bonus.

base TIV

360
Dead Rising - $5.50
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empire - $8
Mass Effect 2 - $35

Wii
A Boy And His Blob - $9
EA Sports Active - $15
Pikmin - $6.25

DS
Brain Age - $4.75
Brain Age 2 - $5.50
Clubhouse Games - $4.75
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - $5
GTA: Chinatown Wars - $6
Henry Hatsworth - $5.25
Izuna 2 - $2
Lux Pain - $1.75
Personal Trainer: Cooking - $2.25
Tokyo Beat Down - $2.50
Space Invaders Extreme 2 - $6.25

got $199.59 for all of that

didn't trade it in but (for the DS)
Theresia - $3
Might & Magic: Clash Of Heroes - 9.50
Dragon Warrior 5 - $9.50

Meh, I'd take the credit just to get Demon Souls off of my hands. Boy did I ever fall for the OMG ITS SO HARDCORE hype on that turd.

Traded in Darksiders for 360 with base TIV of $24, ended up getting $38.40 with Edge Card bonus and the +50%. Pretty sweet deal seeing how I only payed $25 for it at Best Buy.

Got about $200 in store credit after trading in Mass Effect 2 (x2), LoZ: Spirit Tracks, Transformers: The Game, and DJ Hero with Turn Table for PS3.

The one GS I went to had a surprised clerk. He even triple-checked Mass Effect 2 to make sure it "wasn't a glitch" in the system. He then gave me this nasty look and told me that they're taking a $2 hit. =p

This deal was pretty amazing, one Mass Effect 2 trade in paid off Metro 2033 for 360 (which gets an additional $10 off for pre-ordering, btw) and still had $6 left over from that. =D

I think those "refurb" fees are a bunch of crap. I have bought plenty of games there that are scratched a lot worse than what I bring in and they hit the "refurb" button on.

Dude go back there and get them back, and put those up on CAG here for a lowball sell thing, you would get at least twice that. Doesn't GS hold the game for 7 days or something before they put it up for sale?
I know, there's always a better deal somewhere. Been sitting on these games for a while, and decided to unload them at GS because it's quick, easy, and this is a fairly decent deal.
Actually, it was moreso in response to you dumping them. :p
Wow... I can't believe some of the games you traded in, and how little you got for them. Such a quality list with so many games worth much much more than the TiV, with or without a 50% bonus.
Well, there's actually a reason Ikaruga gets so little: no one wants the GameCube version. After a quick look on eBay, you'll find a bunch of auctions with no bids, along with over-priced sales prices.

The reason no one is shelling out the cash for it is because it's $10 on Xbox Live Arcade and comes with online co-op and other features.

eBay's $21 owns Gamestop's $2.75.

Man, Pikmin 2, The Twin Snakes, etc... he could've made a couple hundred with some of those games on eBay.

Depends highly on the store and state.

At our GS, we sticker and shelve the games as soon as possible. Trades are 100% final, no deciding you want your stuff back.

Here's what I traded in.

360
Gears of War - $2.00
CoD: WaW - $5.50
Lego Batman - $4.00
Halo 3:ODST - $17.00
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection - $8.00
Battlefield: Bad Company - $7.00
Mercenaries 2 - $4.00
NBA 2k10 - $15.00

Wii
Super Mario Galaxy - $15.00
Mario Strikers Charged - $10.00

Got $143 in credit after promo

Anyone do madden 10 recently? I see as of 2/11 the tiv for the 360 version is 21.75 so that would be $30+ after edge and deal? Has it gone down since then?
Traded in Darksiders for 360 with base TIV of $24, ended up getting $38.40 with Edge Card bonus and the +50%. Pretty sweet deal seeing how I only payed $25 for it at Best Buy.
How'd you get that TIV for Darksiders? I thought it was only 12.50 base. Did it go back up?
What percentage does GS take off if you want cash and not store credit?
20% and the promos do not apply
Honestly, the first couple of days are pretty much terrible. After that everyone seems to slow down on the trading. Mainly because in the first days the values don't drop super quick but after that they start taking a major drop. If Mass Effect 2 stayed $35 after tonight I would be VERY surprised. I would expect to see it at $25 tomorrow, if not a little lower.
I'd also be very surprised to see it remain at $35 tomorrow. I'd expect $25ish.

Loving this promo. Took in Borderlands, L4D 2 and NHL 08 (360, 360 and PS3 respectively). Walked out with a new copy of MAG and a 20 dollar gift card. Total credit came to $85.76, IIRC.
All XB360:
Left 4 Dead 2- $29.75
Best buy has l4d2 for $39.99. If I trade in my copy to gs, I would get 47.60 after promo and edge. I can make $5.21 after taxes. Is it worth the drive? :bouncy:
