Don't get too excited. With so many BD players out in the world that won't be fully BD-J compatible, combined with the fact that Java, by nature, will take a lot more resources to implement than HDi, don't expect a ton of titles to use it much.
Not to go off-topic here in the deals forum, but I don't see why they wouldn't go all in for BD-J. Sure, the older players won't be able to play them, but I would think the 95% of people who own Blu-Ray's plays them in a PS3, which we know will have no problem playing BD-J. Sure, they are pissing off those other people who own a Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, etc...but that can be blamed on not launching with everything working properly, like HD DVD. So glad I have a PS3!

Word, the PS3 is worth the money if your actually looking to utilize all of its potential. The machine can do so much more than just a stand alone BD player can do, I'm not sure, but didn't Black Hawk Down on Blu Ray take use of some new feature also? I forget what it's called.

Not takin' a stab, but I did find it funny that you said your glad to have a PS3 but in your sig it says you're not playing anything b/c all the games suck. I just found it a bit ironic :p [/Off Topic]

I don't own, nor play any games on the PS3. Its simply a Blu-Ray player. All the games on PS3 that I would want I already own on 360.

PS3 is the best BD player out there.

Firmware updates are great on it.
HDMI 1.3
1080/24 support.

The last thing it needs is the update to will allow it to support DTSHD and TrueHD codecs.

Ahhh I see. Hopefully you'll find Ninja Gaiden Sigma interesting.

I'm waiting til' Fall to pick up a 360 Elite. I hope those rumors about the 65 nm processor are true.

I can't wait for those codec updates as well. I just like that with every update they make the console more and more worth it.

Isn't BD+J a mandatory part of the spec that all players MUST support with firmware updates? I don't see that as much of a problem. Hell, the first Samsung BD player had a 3.XGHz Pentium 4 in the beast IIRC!
I wouldn't call it bashing either technically, but if people want to discuss differences in releases we only have about 4 other next gen DVD threads to put that discussion in (not that we haven't had it already). Last I checked this was the deals thread, and it's long enough as is, we needn't make it harder to find said deals by discussing previously established points of format releases.
Actually, pointing out the inferiority of the film on one format over another puts the deal into perspective for the CAGers shopping for either format, so it's a welcome point. That said, none of those features look interesting. That's like saying "I want my InterActual Player force-fed bullsh!t content on my BD movie so I can have web links and advertisements with my movie! Boo hoo!"

Same here except it's because the games just plain aren't worth what they are charging for them.
IIRC, The Descent 'faked' the picture in picture. I can't remember all the details but I'm sure someone does.
I thought they just included a second copy of the movie with the commentary picture overlapping the movie, same as Crank.

I enjoyed Ninja Gaiden 3 year ago on the Xbox. Sure, it may look great on the PS3, but I'm not paying $60 for a 3 year old port of a port with some extra crap. They should have taken a page from Resident Evil 4 and atleast offered the game at $30/$40. I'll get it when its cheaper.
same here...0 games and counting
Yup, yup. Still waiting on Lair and MGS4.

Xbox Live is a real killer app.

The graphics are bad ass, difficulty is up to par still, and I've always wanted it on my PS system. RE4 was re-released on the Wii w/ the PS2 content, plus all Wii games don't even start at a higher retail than $50. PS3 NGS graphics greatly out-do RE4 and the extra content has never been released before, excluding anything they'll carry over from NG Black (i.e. Rachel's missions).

Anyways, we should leave the debaccle for another thread, this thread is for deals

Anyone find a bundle deal for the POTC BD's other than Amazon w/ the PS3 remote?

I agree, I downloaded the demo off the PSN and couldn't even finish that. Not a good sign. It definitely is prettier than the Xbox version, but I've already played this game years ago, and honestly it might have been a little bit over-rated back then too. No way am I paying $60 for it now.

Gah, I can't help it. What didn't let you finish it? I couldn't stop til I got to Very Hard.
This is no way near over-rated, only painly difficult.

PS3 is only better than the stand alone player because their stand alone player's controls are so awful & slow.

HDMI 1.3 is altogether useless except for that lip synching system which honestly, ive never even noticed lips being out of synch even on vhs. so not sure how beneficial that is. xvYCC isnt going to appear for another 10 years, and by then there will be something to replace HDMI.

1080/24 doesnt really do anything. its the same picture as any other 1080i or p signal, just not sending repetative timing info. if a TV can display w/o the 3:2 pulldown (right now only a few Pioneer Elite plasma sets can), it can do it w/ any signal since the frame timing will just be adjusted by the set.

I'd agree where this the first time someone commented on it, but it's only abou the 10th time. I can't really blame the guy who made that post, it's not his fault (same goes for the responder), but at the same time it'd be nice to see some more deals in thread more often rather than the typical bickering over formats. As I said there's plenty of space for that.

Dam! Just ordered both POTC BD's from Amazon!!!

(Tries to cancel online, order being "prepared for shipment and cannot be canceled," :bomb:, calls amazon, speaks with a CS rep, cancels order, orders new one with PS3 remote...)

Whew! Can't believe I missed that. Dam fine prints!!!

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out!

( Hmmm... I do hope rep follows through... still showing as uncancelled online...awaiting email confirmation... 8-[ )

You're right, none of that matters.
Better stop improving technology where we can.

Kinda harsh to say that the PS3 has no good games... Resistance and Motorstorm are pretty decent. I do agree that the PS3 does make a fantastic BR player and it really has turned me on towards the format.

What is the Pirates w/ PS3 remote deal? did i miss something here?
...What is the Pirates w/ PS3 remote deal? did i miss something here?
It's on any of the 3 items on the site:

Limited time offer: Buy both Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on Blu-ray and save $10 off a Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray remote

Again, not sure if it's a new deal or I just missed it because of the small print. I just ordered last Thursday, 5/31.

Anyway, got the email...but it wasn't a confirmation. Turns out it already shipped, so they couldn't cancel it.

:bomb:

Oh well, good thing they allowed me to refuse shipment so I don't have to pay for shipping it back. Just kinda inconvenient though.
You're right, none of that matters.

its not really an improvement. that was my point. its like having an extra blade on your swiss army knife but its too dull to cut anything.

I would do the amazon potc remote deal, but I already got the remote for 15 because my Wal-mart had them clearenced for 15. That lasted for about a week and now they're back to normal price.

Does any one know the details on the release of Hellboy that is coming out tomorrow on Blu-Ray?

On Amazon the image for the cover says "Director's Cut."

But the image on High Def Digest doesn't show that.

With the sale going on at DDD, you can get this for less than the price of the Standard Definition Director's Cut, so I'm just curious if anyone has heard anything about which release this actually is.

Thanks in advance.

I had my brother place the order for both POTC movies on Amazon and even though we own a PS3 remote he wanted Amazon's $10 off PS3 Blu-Ray Remote deal... unfortunately there appears to be NO way to get it without calling unless they just send you a coupon or something. Adding the remote to your cart just adds the remote at full-price.

I'm still buying Blood Diamond on BD tomorrow... perhaps a 110% price-match is in order.

Edit: BTW, Blood Diamond is reportedly a BD50 disc. If it has the exact same encode as the HD-DVD as is also reported, then I'd imagine that even uncompressed audio wouldn't spill it into BD50 territory. Is there another simulated IME on the disc? I wonder...

I wouldn't expect "double-dip" BD releases until the standard editions are much cheaper, so I would expect Director's Cut or both on the same disc regardless of the art shown out there. All conjecture of course, but filling up the library with double-dip releases or releasing inferior versions is not the way to support transitioning to the next format. That said, Talladega Nights is only available in "Unrated and Uncut!" edition for BD even though the standard PG-13 theatrical version was given away with PS3s. The fact that it exists and yet isn't for sale shows restraint in needlessly selling two different versions.

Thanks for the info.

I think I'll wait until I see which edition is in stores tomorrow so I can make sure that I'm getting the Director's Cut and how the features match up with the SD Director's Cut.

God damnit, i ordered Curse of the black pearl a while back and already opened it. God damnit.

Yea, I had bought Dead Man's Chest from the Fry's sale about a week ago, then I spotted this deal. I was glad I didn't pop it open although it was tempting.
Sweet. I'll be ordering it tomorrow then. Thanks!
Same. Should be $19.99 at Fry's tomorrow (hopefully), so I will dump my 3 Disc DC tonight.

got my Blood Diamond BD along with Terminator and Fifth Element today from the DeepDiscountDVD glitch...very surprised that it slipped through

VERY fortunate.

I only placed an order for Blood Diamond and it got cancelled in a jiffy

OK, I watched The Prestige enough times on DVD to be willing to wait to find it sub-$20. Has anyone ever seen it around that price on BD? I'm tempted to go with Amazon again for just under $24 but not when I watched it three times less tahn a month ago. :D

BTW, I see from some comments that Hellboy is expected to be $18 at some places. Where? I've never seen it, but it sounds like a keeper (though I didn't like the guy's other movie all that much... Pan's Labyrinth).
God damnit, i ordered Curse of the black pearl a while back and already opened it. God damnit.
Personally, I bought it at Blockbuster Video for $34.99 so I could start watching now as my POTC: COTBP and DMC shipped from Amazon with the full intention of returning the one from Amazon at Blockbuster. Thanks to the BBV tag being on a slip-cover, there should be no problem AT ALL provided it ships fast enough (been almost a week). I'm ready and waiting for Dead Man's Curse so I can then go watch At World's End... where is my package Amazon?!
i don't see the $10 off mentioned in the gc checkout link
None of the sites list it anymore, but the deal is still good. Has worked fine for me on Buy.com, MTV, VH1, Video Universe, Best Prices, Suncoast, etc.

Oh yeah, forgot about stupid Frys shipping.

I went ahead and picked up Blood Diamond BD on my way to work this morning. They had about 12 copies showing.

Does the 10% off stack on top of the Amazon Remote deal? The 10% off I'm referring to is for High Def they offered a while back.

Is there a code to input for the 10% to take effect or is it just automatic?

Stupid !@#!$ Fry's. I live very far away from the two metro Atlanta locations. The distance difference from me is .1 miles, so either store is as good as the other.

So, I called on Sunday to ask if BD movies will get the same priority as DVD releases. In other words, should I show up there at opening time and risk being told that they'll get put out sometime in the afternoon (thereby requiring me to stay in Atlanta all day) or should I show up some time in the evening/afternoon and risk being told that they are already sold out? I was told that they put out "all" new releases first thing in the morning. I knew that their definition of "all" was likely different than my definition of "all" (mine includes HD-DVD and Blu-Ray), but I had clearly specified that I was talking about the $14.99 Blood Diamond movie on Blu-Ray Disc.

Sure enough, they had NONE and all they can tell me is that "it's weird because we got them and we just don't know where they are." I asked about a rain check because they can't just bait and switch and they said "no, because it's a sale price." Well duh. F#$kers must not know what a rain check is for!
