$43 for Equilibrium, the price at Amazon japan
Back on topic, can you order from amazon.jp if you don't speak Japanesse?
Back on topic, can you order from amazon.jp if you don't speak Japanesse?
Yes, there is an english version of their website, just look for the english button in the top right of the site.

As a side note, this is one of the most, if not the most, expensive imports. Most of them I've seen are around $30-35. There are rumors of Equilibrium being a limited edition run so that inflated the price.

Not to mention that Equilibrium was made by the same guy who directed Ultraviolet, one of the worst movies ever made. But I haven't seen Equilibrium. > : )

In regards to the BR rebates, I have four eligible titles from four different studios. Should I send them in four seperate envelopes, or has anyone had success with sending multiple rebates in one envelope?
Not to mention that Equilibrium was made by the same guy who directed Ultraviolet, one of the worst movies ever made. But I haven't seen Equilibrium. > : )
You gotta check out Equilibrium though. Its got one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. Probobly even better than some of the fights in the Matrix trilogy.
I thought this was a deals thread...
Thank you for restoring order (or at least trying to) to this thread.
I bought my 360 before I knew of any HD DVD add-on, I bought it for games. And for a measly investment of $160 I got the add-on to enjoy HD movies. No HD player is worth more than that, that's for sure.

Oh and might I remind... Many HD DVD's CAN work in regular DVD players. Little thing called value add...

For the third time, I am talking about people that were willing to buy an add-on for $200 or less, not spend a minimum of $600 to watch movies and hope for a good exclusive game some day.

Those imported HD DVD's ARE on the format that I want to see. And they are as easy to order as Amazon is.

Subtitled? Who cares? Almost all movies have subtitles. You can turn them off and on. Try it, it's pretty handy.

And paying $600 for a machine that can't do much right now but play HD movies, strictly based on the success of it's predecessor, is absurd if you ask me.

I will order maybe 2 or 3 imported HD DVD's a year and still save hundreds more than you did for jumping into bluray. And the only good exclusive game I might miss is God of War 3. So I feel kind of the opposite of absurd, how about you?

Disney and Fox alone aren't enough to make Bluray win. And not enough people fell for Sony's trick of charging $1000+ for bluray players until the PS3 came out to make it look like an amazing deal for a bluray machine. They are collecting dust on store shelves everywhere.

Everyone knows that if it weren't for the success of the Playstation 2 alone, the entire Bluray format would have been laughed off the market before it even launched.

Both formats will survive for a long time. If you think two of any movie is enough to ruin the other format, you're delusional.

Sorry to everyone else for derailing this topic.
- HD-DVD COMBO discs can work in DVD players.

- Purchasing an add-on at $200 does not negate the initial $400 investment, since you would not be able to watch HD-DVDs without it.

- 2-3 imported HD-DVDs a year is a pretty small amount. The standard US releases are far from exciting in my eyes, and most are available on BR.

- The cheapest HD-DVD players at both Circuit City and Best Buy(the largest electronics retailer in the world) are $499.99. The cheapest BluRay player at either store is The $499 20GB PS3(if you can find it), otherwise $599.

I'm not debating about how you paid $200 for your HD-DVD add-on. It's a good deal, I own the same one. I'm saying that if you are the average joe with no interest in gaming, you would pick the player that had the exclusive movies you want to see. The price difference between HD-DVD and BluRay is negligible if you are going to regularly be paying $40 to import movies from Spain or wherever.

As for the Pirates movies, they were both HUGE hits, and they are already advertising the BluRay versions on many Disney/Buena Vista DVDs. When you go into Best Buy in late May, every TV in the place is going to be advertising for it as well. HD-DVD doesn't have a hit of that caliber on its horizon any time soon.

Shut up, it's over.

If you want to argue, take it to another thread.

Back on topic, any deals on standalone HD-DVD players? My Dad is looking to pick one up and I'm hoping there is another deal where you can get some movies free with purchase.
You gotta check out Equilibrium though. Its got one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. Probobly even better than some of the fights in the Matrix trilogy.
Very true. Awesome movie. And probably singly most responsible for making Christian Bale an action hero.

I know more than a couple people who like it more than the Matrix. I know one guy who says it's his favorite movie of all time (he's the one that showed me the import disc, because he got it).

From what I've read in AVSforum, the equilibrium import HD DVD has tier 1 picture quality, and actually looks better than it's bluray counterpart.
If you went the 360 + HD-DVD route, that's $500-600. Standalone HD-DVD units are still pretty expensive too.

I have a feeling that with the 2 Pirates of the Caribbean movies hit May 22nd, it might spell the end for HD-DVD.
1. Standalone HD units can be purchased for as low as $300 online or $500 instore. There have been MANY deals in the past few weeks ($500 for an A2 with 9 free movies) while the Blu-Ray stand-alones are still $800 in store with n2 free movies. If your smart, and go online to purchase a standalone HD unit, valueelectronics.com has the A2 for $400 shipped to your door tax free with 2 free movies RIGHT away and 5 more mail-away. Pretty DAMN cheap.

2. This is not the 'end'. Both movies are already on DVD and have sold millions upon millions there. While people WILL upgrade their discs, not everyone will. Remember their are only 2 million or so BR players sold (including the 1.8 PS3s).... even if every single owner of a BR machines buts one thats not even close to a top selling title on DVD.
Thank you for restoring order (or at least trying to) to this thread.
Yeah, there really needs to be another thread for the arguing. The last few pages of this thread have been about which one is better. Not much about deals at all....

sorry but if the common consumer can't walk into a retail store and find that price, it doesn't count :)
Yeah, there really needs to be another thread for the arguing. The last few pages of this thread have been about which one is better. Not much about deals at all....
This could've easily been avoided had the powers that be split the topic, giving both HD-DVD & Blu-ray their own as I suggested.

You, of all people, need to quit bitching about an argument starting in the deals thread.
You, of all people, need to quit bitching about an argument starting in the deals thread.
I didn't start anything in the other thread it was blown out of proportion and I apologized if I came off wrong which you obviously can't accept. And I'm not bitching I'm just saying that if we want to have a discussion about Blu-Ray vs HD DVD we should start a new thread about it.

Yeah, we should really split the topic. At another forum I visit, a lot of the Blu-Ray fans are jerks and start trouble at every opportunity with their FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) tactics, i. e. constantly saying HD DVD is dead, etc.. The BR fans here at CAG seem to be a lot better, but we should segregate and keep it even cleaner IMO.

I didn't agree before but I do now. That way we separate and there won't be any Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD discussions...hopefully.
i look at it this way.....why are all the Blu-ray disk gettikng the great sales? probably because the HD-DVDs have no problem selling
I doubt it. If you take a close look at the sale, it looks like it's specifically Fox, Sony, and Magnolia studios that are involved in the sale. I'm sure this was something put together by Sony and the other studios and they cut a deal with Amazon to offer them for these prices temporarily and they would reimburse them back for the difference. Same thing with Best Buy doing a buy 1 get 1 free on Sony titles (select titles) a month or two back whenever it was.

IMO otherwise you would have a variety of different studio's titles on sale at amazon and it would be based on poor sellers. I doubt Rocky is some huge seller for Blu-ray while Kingdom of Heaven, Ice Age, etc. are really poor sellers. Fox just chose not to put Rocky on the list. What about Paramount and Warner? I'm sure they have a few duds in there, but Amazon didn't put a sale on them.

I think people think blu-ray will be the winner because they're finally outselling HD-DVD (even if it's just a little). Add in the fact that Samsung, Sharp, Pioneer, etc. are backing them up with hardware and Toshiba is basically all alone (I think Onkyo is suppose to come out with one and maybe some no name Chinese brands or something). Then you have only Universal while blu-ray has Fox, Lionsgate, Buena Vista, etc. Blu-ray has a lot going for it.

Price drops should never be an indicator of how well a particular item is doing, as these types of sales are part of marketing. Really, these exist to entice you to spend money now(even if it's at a loss to the seller), rather than waiting it out. To say that HD DVD is dead is a pretty big jump to make, and to say that Blu-ray is in trouble is also not really fair either. A sale's a sale, no need to try to predict things without solid evidence. Even if you're an analyst, it doesn't make your predictions anymore true....all you're doing is enticing the other guy into an argument. Anyway...I just want more titles...I don't even care if they're on sale or not. >_>

I think its because most of us CAG Blu-ray fans are also HD-DVD users. I personally love both formats. Ill take either Blu-ray or HD-DVD over a regular DVD any day of the week.

AGGGHHHHH.....we cannot stay on topic. Please, someone give me the power to delete posts....I know I have debated also, as it's easy to get caught up.

So, what Blu-Ray discs did people get via Amazon? ;)

I had a bunch of Borders gift cards I wanted to deplete, so I got:

AVP
Fantastic Four
District B13
Transporter 1 & 2
Ice Age: The Meltdown

On a side note, I also picked up Layer Cake at a CC that put it out early.

You can get the Toshiba HD-A2 for $375 shipped from Amazon, no tax.

You can wait for the coupons valid for this weekend from Best Buy. I believe the 12% RZ coupon is good on the HD-A2.

Or you can order it from here for $399.99, but it comes with two free HD-DVDs on top of the 5 you can get from Toshiba through mail in rebate. The 5 free ones are valid with the purchase of a Toshiba from any authorized retailer, actually.

http://valueelectronics.com/Toshiba_HD-A2_and_HD-XA2.htm

Good luck.

Pretty sure the rebate is from toshiba. So it doesn't really matter where you buy it.

Does it come in the box or from their website?

Thanks for the heads up Zman. As you say, shipping kinda kills the Casino Royale deal. I got excited, because the cheapest I'd seen prior was about $28, but that's what it winds up being. ;)

Anyone else seen a deal anywhere on CR? I really want the BR version, so I have a NEW movie and not just all the older titles I got from Fry's instore for basically $10/each. ;)
I just bought Casino Royale (Blu-Ray) from Buy.com with the Google Checkout discount for $16.99.
Yeah honestly that sounds like the best idea to me aswell. It's a little more then $15 which is my sweet spot for BR movies.
Got my $5 copy of Babel from GameznFlix. Yipee!
What's their return address listed as? Did anyone get both the refund email and Babel?

Didnt get a refund email, just the refund. Was extremely suprised to get it as these guys are big theives who dont like to talk about money (or the "r" word) at all.
I got the refund email. No movie so far though.
Are people getting BOTH? I hope the company is not THAT dumb. I got a refund though....I said something though, so that is probably why.

It's ok though....I rented Babel on HDDVD and thought the movie was boring.
Except for some Asian muff ;)

v was a pretty good movie.. i have it on hd...a lot of ppl dont like it for some reason

anyways i prob wouldnt own so many hd movies if it werent for gc..

i really want rocky next week.. tempted to buy at retail price... gotta find a way to get it cheaper on release day

man, i was just leaving the babel thing alone, hoping they'd just send it to me, but i got the refund email about two days ago. so much for that.

i'm still sitting on a copy of land of the dead on hd-dvd i got at the best buy buy two save $10 sale that i haven't decided if i want to keep or not though. i was curious to see how good the zombies and stuff look in hd, but then started remembering all the really gross stuff about the movie, and kind of don't want to watch it.
Not a huge deal but still good:

Deepdiscount.com has some good HD-DVD's for $19.39 shipped.

http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewcategory.htm?categoryId=462364&start=1&keywords=&sortby=price&count=

Scroll towards bottom of page for listing in prices from Low to High.

On another note: Since TMNT is by Weinstein, It means that it should be coming out exclusively to HD-DVD, this will probobly be my first animated HD-DVD.
Thanks linkin! Now I hate myself for wasting a GCO to get Discovery Atlas: China for about that same price.

But I'm in for Discovery Atlas: Brazil on this deal.

Quick Note: (sorry if old) My local Costco has HD-DVD dual-format discs for $29.99. Not the best deal, but interesting that Costco is finally carrying some HD content.
