So, I picked up Children of Men from buy.com with the GC offer. I picked the free shipping option (7-9 business days) to get the best deal. Now the order says the disk is "On Order," meaning they don't have any in stock. Was there a recall of these disks due to the incomparability issues people were having?
Anyone know how to cancel an order through that wb site? There's no option on their site, and they won't respond to my emails.
wow atleast you got your emails through.. i replied to the email address that sends you confirmation and it kept bouncing back.. lucky for them they shipped my movie so i gave up

Hopefully you don't use a 360 to play HD-DVD's, because all 4 i tried from BB wouldnt work and that would be a pain in the ass to keep returning to buy.com till you get a working copy.

I can't believe so many people are buying a Scanner Darkly. I thought that movie was horrible.

Loved Scanner Darkly. Waiting on that one too.

Well, it sounds like Amazon just got new stock on Children of Men, so maybe they've repressed the movie.

Any word if the 360 fall update will deliver a firmware update for the HD-DVD add-on? I have heard that it will update the issues with DTS and TrueHD sound problems (crackling and popping on NIN disk).

You mean Spring Update?

Yes, though, it's actually supposed to hit before the Spring Update.

Its not the 360 add ons fault. People are having issues with all types of players, while others work perfectly in the same players. Seems to be Universal disc issues. All 4 you tried from BB were probably pressed at the same time.

For those having trouble with Children of Men, or other HD DVDs not being recognized:

Try washing the disc with some dish soap--just once, not every time you play it. Seriously, it helps. A lot of people (but not everybody) on AVS have found that discs that have never played in any player read fine 100% of the time after being washed once.

My theory is that there's some outgassing from the lamination process that deposits a film on the surface and makes it difficult to read. It could be something completely different, of course, but that seems most logical to me.

OK... I have been really frustrated with these HD-DVD issues and my add-on. Had to play COM on SD since I could not get it to play at ALL. I was very skeptical of this solution but I gotta say that I just tried it and it WORKS!!! After 10 failed attempts at playing this movie, just a little dishsoap and the thing plays flawlessly. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! :applause::bouncy:

Now we'll have to test the Good Sheppard since it seems to have the same issue.

Thanks again!

Victoria
I bought one copy of Children of men, and it played flawlessly on my add-on.
Almost the same here as the movie did have a slight stutter through the first few scenes the first time I played it. Wheni played it after it that it has played perfectly.

The Good Shepherd I bought on the other hand never played and since it was the last copy at CC when I bought it I figured I was SOL. When I returned several days later I asked them to try the disc in their setup and it still didn't play at all. Luckily they had received new copies and when I tried that one at home it played just beautifully.
Yes sir! I think you are the first person to point out where my name comes from. :D
That's one of my favorite songs. Too bad they broke up. Fire Theft just isn't the same.

Diary is one of the best CD's I ever heard!
Pretty lame.

Almost all of them were already 30% off MSRP.
Oh sorry about that. I didn't know they already were.

I saw the transfer of COM at circuit city. We need COM on blu ray like now, that thing looked real nice. Speaking of which, if you go to your local circuit city they seem to be having a looping BluRay player ad which shows Spiderman 2 on Bluray and it is jaw droppingly beautiful. Well thats my spam for the day.

Have you guys seen Scanner Darkly on DVD? I walked in on my friend watching it on my TV, played through an upconverting Samsung, and I honestly thought it was an HD DVD at first. I actually asked him - it looked that good. I couldn't imagine the HD DVD being worth the price difference considering the DVD looks so damn good.

I watched Children of Men on my HD DVD addon this weekend and it played flawlessly (rental from Netflix).

i have yet to see a dvd that comes close to looking as good as a native hd dvd. It really depends on the transfer but scanner darkly looks damn amazing on hd dvd

To be fair though, animated titles are generally more conducive to upconversion than live action. So the visual style of ASD might actually look near-HD on a good upconverting player. True HD will obviously have more detail and look better, but the gap likely won't be as wide as with a more "normal" title.

Scanner in HD looks completely bizarre. It's awesome. But I don't actually know what happend in the story. Was he some sort of drugged up chameleon?

I got my Scanner today from the Warners store, but my flipping 360 got the 3 red lights over the weekend. I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to enjoy it in HD.

Just wondering how a Scanner Darkly was as a movie itself? I heard it's PQ is amazing but I am not sure if it is worth a purchase.

I could not sit through the whole movie. I tried 3 times and everytime I ended up falling asleep. Movie does a good job at beating around the bush and basically just dragging for however many hours it is.

Watch it for eye candy, but don't expect much out of the movie.

I thought it was a little slow until the end.

The twist makes up for everything.

Its one of my favorite movies of 06. I upgraded from my SD version, since I got it for $14.xx on the WB site through the coupon deals.

So this is strange. Buy.com just canceled my Children of Men order because the product is no longer available from the supplier. Was this title canceled because of the playback issues? Seems strange that the supplier would no longer carry a new release HD-DVD.

Where else can I use Google Checkout for HD-DVDs?

The copy I order from buy.com arrived before the release date. Played perfectly every time on the Xbox addon.

I ditched the addon, switching to A2; that night mode bug is awful.

I have the X360 HD DVD add-on...what's this night mode bug you speak of?
I have the X360 HD DVD add-on...what's this night mode bug you speak of?
He's talking about the audio bug. The DD is permanently set to night mode. That's why the audio has to be cranked up to a pretty high db level just to hear the dialogues of movies.

Should be fixed with the DTS output problem with next update.
I never have to crank the audio on my HD-DVD 360 drive...seems comparable to my DVD.
your lucky, i had to raise the volume on my new lcd screen to 96 to listen to the dialog in children of men (which played fine on my hd dvd drive), when 360 games and normal tv content only need the volume set in the 30's-40's

Wow, interesting....are you running through a receiver? I have a Sony receiver which goes from (0 -high to 110 low)

TV I keep at around 50ish (some channels need 40)
DVD around 45-50
360 around 50-70 (I keep it low sometimes)
HD-DVD around 45-50

that's on my tv! the reciever is deafening at 40 (it's an old cheapy sony.... before dolby digital was standard in recievers).

I just watched children of men on my A2. The audio difference is astounding. The DD+ doesn't souns so bad compared to TrueHD now.

It looks like the Warner Brothers site has two coupon codes that worked for me: RNDIS and WBWEL.

Got from dealmein.net. Looks like it expires today.

Picked up Planet Earth on blu-ray for $57.56 + $4.75 tax = $62.31

THANKS!! Just used the codes to preorder the Matrix on HD-DVD :applause:

Thanks HakFoo! I finally got two coupon codes to work in my cart, and ordered The Matrix Trilogy, Last Samurai, Troy, and V for Vendetta... all for JUST over $100. Was about $35 in savings!!! :D

I couldn't get to two codes to work for other hd-dvds or bd, untl I did the following:

1) Added Planet Earth
2) Added all other hd-dvds and blu-rays I wanted
3) Added the two coupon codes above
4) Removed Planet Earth

Voila! All other blu-rays and hd-dvds were discounted!

I ended up ordering the Fountain, Matrix Trilogy, and Batman Begins. I should have ordered V for Vendetta. Oh well. I picked up Troy, Departed, Last Samurai, and Constantine the last time this deal was up.

Thanks HakFoo, coupons worked for me and I got the HD-DVD version for the same price you got, thanks a bunch. I cancelled my Amazon order and saved almost $9

So, you run the optical cable to your TV or your receiver? I think it all depends how you set up your system. I do NOT use my TV speakers for anything.

I run the optical to my receiver. And for me the HD-DVD add-on needs to be cranked up about 10-15db to equal the audio of a regular dvd and 360 games.

optical to receiver and rca cables to tv..... both require a HUGE crank in volume.
