Imports Links: Exclusive Titles and Suggestions:
Anybody interested in imports, EzyDVD is doing a 2 for 50 (or 25 a pop) sale for Universal titles.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/promo.zml?pid=647&ddat=1&dsal=1&dper=1

Import exclusive titles include

Rambo 1-3
The Holiday
Total Recall

And there is also non-combo versions of

Children Of Men
Smokin' Aces
American Werewolf In London
Miami Vice

for you combo haters.

The really nice thing is that the AUD is weaker than the US dollar. So I was able to grab Rambo: First Blood for only 27.23 AUD (US $22.39)
Was at my local WalMart today and they still had two Toshiba HD-A2 players left so I couldn't resist picking one up. :)

So anyone else having problems with the A3? It won't play all of my movies, keeps giving me error codes. I play them on my XBOX 360 HD DVD player and it works fine. Wondering if its defective or if I'm missing something.

Did you upgrade the FW yet?

strange.. the a2's played everything ive thrown at it..

the online downloading is also a lot faster for me...

what they really need to do is improve the performace on the web menus.. especially for universal titles... its slow as shit and horribly painful to enter account info..

atleast transformers didnt require registration
Did you upgrade the FW yet?
Yeah...no change. It also boots up and loads pretty slow compared to my 360's. I'll take it back today or tomorrow and see what happens with the new one.

nice.. my a2 is still "in process" on bb for biz site

its confirmed, the A30, 399 2 in box, 5 mail in, 3 free, now they dont say the price on any of the 3 nor do they say what other HD DVDs it includes

wait...explain to me how you are doing that?! pleezz!!!

Why the big fuss over a player that only does 1080i? Is there a firmware update, or can it be updated to provide a 1080p signal? I realize that much of what is out there is 720p, but most of the new stuff is all 1080p, and there does not seem to be THAT much old stuff to want to invest in a 1080i player. Sorry that this is off topic.

on a side note saw
the last samurai, alexander revisted, and unforgiven( clint eastwood) at walmart for 14.96 each i guess their getting ready for black friday it was in card board display

ordered off the website a few days ago through google cache. They called me and said the item was backordered and they werent expecting more so they were changing my order to the newer model the a3 which is considered the same thing lol. I made off pretty good I think. Also got an a2 at walmart last night when I didnt think id be getting the a3. O well, have an extra for once I buy a newer hdtv.

$399????

Why are people saying $199? What am I missing?

I like the A3 with 9 movies at $199 and pick one up yesterday at BB. Wish someone would post all of CC's sunday ad!

The A30 actually does 1080p and 120hz/24p. Its a much better unit.

I think the big fuss is because many of us have lcd tvs that only show 720p/1080i (and as we know there is no real difference between the two on LCD screens). I do not plan on upgrading tvs until this one dies (when I buy a tv I expect to have it a minimum of 15 years). I (and other) have smaller tvs anywy (32" here and nothing bigger will fit where my tv goes) and I won't miss the 1080p resuolution. So...given that I don't need a player that goes 1080p, this is a great deal. Just last week I was looking at upscaling dvd players and this hddvd was a mere $20 more and came with a more reliable upscaler. Sure, I will marvel at the detail of 1080p from 2 feet away at best buy, but when I watch a movie, I am not noticing detail so much after the first few minutes.

Ultimately, I think we will see the bluray/hddvd dual format player win the war (much like the DVD+- writable drives won that war).

Those are just Blu-ray fanboys trying to get you to buy their player over the HD DVD.

20% of people own an HDTV, and less then 10% of 100% of HDTV owners een have a 1080p TV. 1080p is not needed that bad, and most 1080p TVs can deinterlace the 1080i signal to 1080p.

You WON'T tell the difference.

With that said...

Just got back from my local BB and grabbed a new A3 for $199 and an open box A2 for $99 (they refused to give me a 10% even though it was open).

I will be bringing my receipts back on Tuesday to grab 2 copies of Chuck and Larry.

The ad clearly says "ANY HD DVD player" so the A2 shouldn't be an issue.

I'm not too worried about the price as the A3 price is $199 at Bestbuy.com RIGHT NOW and will stay that price from here on out. If they give you issues, return it, and rebuy it right away for $199 with the 3 free movies.

cause it might include the a3 too, which could be 199

i also rather have an a30 but not at 399..

i have a 1080p set but again im not noticing a big diff from my addon and my a2..
I guess it is true about size and viewing distance with 1080p..

i guess the tv's specs itself (contrast ratio, size) is more important..

any word if people who ordered from the business site are getting the same email.... nothing yet.:(

How about people who bought a 360 HD addon a couple weeks ago during the free Heroes + 2 others deal? Think they might give you a 3rd HD DVD free?

I wouldn't try it if you got 2 boxsets free, but if you just got 2 regular movies free, might be worth a shot?

so wait...man i guess im really confused today...how is everyone going to get a Toshiba A3 w/3 free dvds (plus 300 and bourne identity?) + 5 hd dvd MIR for $199?

Ok, this is what's going on:

Best Buy:
HD-A3 $199 (w/Boune Identity & 300 + Any 2 HD DVD's + 5 HD DVD's via Mail)

Some people got the HD-A3 for $99 when they placed an order on BestBuy.com for the HD-A2, they sold out so they upgraded them to the HD-A3 at the same price.

Circuit City:
HD-A3 $199 (w/Boune Identity & 300 + 5 HD DVD's via Mail)
HD-A30 $399 (w/Bourne Idenity & 300 + Any 3 HD DVD's + 5 HD DVD's via Mail)

What kills me I have a $40 off $200 coupon plus $15.00 in rewards cards for CC but for some dumb reason those 2 extra DVDs at BB are making want to get it there instead.

ehh we dont know which player comes with the 3 extra at CC, it says select player, so its a wait and see situation

you will display 1080p on your 1080p set with a 1080i player

on a 1080p capable TV a 1080 signal is 1920X1080 resolution no matter how you look at it. most 1080p TVs have good quality built in descalers/deinterlacers

almost all HD media (Blu/hddvds) are encoded in 1080p

from the source (HD media) if 1080p is presented to a 1080p device (HD/blu ray player), it delivers a single 1920x1080 frame . the 1080p tv will receive the single frame and display it in one pass ie. Progressive

from the source (HD media) if 1080p is presented to a 1080i device (HD/blu ray player), it delivers 2 1920x540 frames . the 1080p tv will receive the 2 frames in buffer the descaler/deinterlacer will combine the frames and form a single 1920x1080 frame and display it in one pass ie. Progressive

there is no upconversion required in this process only deinterlacing. this means all data is always exactly the same as the source material and is displayed as such in the final result. there is no delay as there is an expected frame cadence and the tv handles the deinterlacing immediatley. you will get a 1080p picture

also it is most likely that you would never be able to tell the difference between a 1080i and a 1080p picture in the first place. there are very few people that can see the frame rate difference

its all marketing BS to make average joe consumer think there is a difference between different technologies, just to sell you a "full hd" item.

My HDTV is 720P, but when I hooked my computer up it automatically went to 1080i. I wasn't epecting that. Is it wrong, or can it display 1080i? Is it worse than 720p since that wasn't it's native resolution? And, can that damage my tv? Btw I have an Olevia 32" 232v.

No, your TV does both 720p and 1080i, it will harm nothing. I would set it to 720p though, it should look better.

We have a winner!
There seems to be 3 different mail in rebate forms:

The original with Swordfish and Troy:
http://thelookandsoundofperfect.com/_pdf/perfect_hd_dvd_offer_redemption_form.pdf

Two new ones with TMNT and Syriana as options:
http://download.sears.com/misc/5Free_end022808.pdf

http://promotions.newegg.com/toshiba/102307/images/5Free_OnlineForm_R08.pdf
does it matter which rebate is used..? would the receipt have to match the store.??

im kind of partial to the old one since i already have tmnt

It seems like they're both legit. I searched the TMNT form with Spotlight and "Sears" didn't come up. Both forms seem to have the "Place of Purchase" blank.

I prefer the one with Swordfish in TMNT's place as well. With the TMNT one I own all 3 movies on that line (and I would avoid that copy of Full Metal Jacket... the re-release is a lot better and looks like a recent release instead of a 20 year old film)

im still trying to get the A2 to output dolby digital..its doing the same thing with faceoff even though i have dolby digital 5.1 plus selected in the movie's menu.

noticed this in the manual...

When you play a
disc recorded in Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD,
the sound is converted to a DTS bitstream. If the AV receiver or
processor does not support DTS, select "PCM".

kinda gay

This is excellent and should be put in the OP!!!!

It's very easy to understand.

Is TMNT the animated one or the ones w/ the guys in turtle suits? Is the animated one any good?
or the ones w/ the guys in turtle suits? Is the animated one any good?
hahah yea right.. i wish.....

the animated one is decent though and looks amazing...

whats the difference between the hd-a3 and hd-a30? Best buy messed my in store pickup but I think it was for the best? Will this have a problem with the rebate since the receipt says hd-a3 and the upc hd-a30? What box would I check for the dvdp layer I bought for the rebate?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I just don't feel like scouring right now....

Will I get any advantage with the A2 over my 360 add-on with my 52" 1080i TV if I decide to go that route?

I'm pretty happy with my 360 add-on, but for 5 more discs, I may just try to snag one of those A2s if there is a noticeable difference....

I did. I just got back from BB and got the a3 for 180.00 w/ tax. I used the 12% off coupon and since they didn't have it ready at the counter(ordered online & chose in-store P/U) I got an additional 10.00 off my order. I chose Bourne Ultimatum & Shrek 3 as my "any two" movies and just re-confirm YES it does come w/ Bourne Identity & 300. Box has a sticker showing both movies.

I am going to order the HD-A3 tonight from BB. But, they are now advertising that you get 3 free HD-DVD's in tomorrows add. So if I order online at BB.com tonight will they PM this in store and give me an additional HD-DVD for free even though I ordered it online.

I had an issue with the A3 as well, change the sound setups to Bitrate instead of PCM and it should do it.
