HD DVD thread - Toshiba: HD DVD DISCONTINUED, REPAIR/SUPPORT CONTINUES, NO BLU PLANS
That's funny. These days I more and more seem to enjoy foreign (subtitled) movies than American movies.

And dubbing a foreign movie ruins it horribly.
I couldn't agree more about dubbing. They especially do some bad Dubs on Anime.

Currently Own:

King Kong (pack-in)
Fearless
Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Shipping to me this week:

Scooby Doo

Will probably get in the near future:

Mission Impossible III
The Break Up
Serenity
Worth it for "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", picture et al?
Phoebe Cates topless in slow motion is worth it, HD or no HD.

Seriously, it looks good enough for me, considering the movie's age. It gets a solid recommendation from DVDtalk. Probably a tier 2 or 3 in PQ, though.

I'll peruse this thread tomorrow when I have the time, but if anyone could give me ideas on the best demo discs for the format, I'd greatly appreciate it. I wanna see what the best the format has to offer. King Kong looks fucking sick.
Worth it for "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", picture et al?
Topless Phoebe Cates or not, I've heard this disc is definitely not something that "shows off" HD-DVD. If you have to have it, I'd stick with the much more affordable DVD.
Nice... Gotta say I'm disappointed the Fugitive is in the worst tier. That's always been a favorite and one of a select few that I might have considered rebuying on HD.
Same for me with Full Metal Jacket.

As long as HD-DVD sticks around, I'm sure we'll see some double dipping in the future, so hopefully some of these early releases will get cleaned up later on. If you were around when DVD first hit, comparing an early (97-98ish) DVD to the same movie, rereleased and cleaned up in 2006 often reveals a large difference.

Only the Sting interests me this week.

King Kong
Serenity
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Damn I love this movie)
MI: 3
Batman Begins
Last Samurai

This may be the wrong thread, but I have a couple of HD-DVDs from my collection that I'm interested in trading (couldn't find a HD trade thread on CAG). Here's what I have to trade:

Ant Bully
Serenity

Anyone interested?

^^^You should post what you're looking for too.

Nothing for me this week except Clerks II, which I already have ordered from Amazon. That Weinstein exclusivity is nice, for as long as it lasts anyway.

Mato you MIGHT wanna pick up "Black Rain" on HD-DVD too. I've read GREAT reviews about "Black Rain"'s pq.

I know you didn't put it in your trade list, but I have a sealed Serenity HD-DVD that I would trade for Pitch Black, Fast & Furious or Casino -- just a thought. PM me if you're interested.

Also, did you mean Bourne Supremacy or do I need to go to BB and grab a Bourne Identity??

It's part of my list of wants, no upcoming news though. However if a region free or region 2 NON-Subtitled version was released on HD-DVD I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've seen it enough times. Doen't make sense tp me "Oldboy" would get released but not this. I know it's done well enough in the Korean market though perhaps "Oldboy" did very well in the Japanese one.

So what is the scene right now as far as HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray? I havn't really heard anything in a while, so perhaps you guys can set me straight. I am REALLY considering picking up the 360 HD-DVD drive for $160 with the CC coupon, but I don't want it to be worthless in a year or even two. The last I heard both formats were garnering support from the various camps but HD-DVD is selling better.... thoughts? What is the relative risk of picking up an HD-DVD now before the format has been chosen?
Clerks and Mallrats are coming to HD DVD?
"Mallrats" I'm pretty sure since it's under Universal but "Clerks" I don't know since it's under Miramax and I'm not sure what movies Weinstein got after he split, if any.``

Blu-Ray has the advantages on paper, and had a more noteable showing at CES. With the PS3, the overall Blu-Ray disc sales have started to catch up.

It's hardly "over" though. If one bad showing at a trade show was all it took to sink a format, the PS3 would have been dead before it was released. Blu-Ray has an impressive lineup for 2007 and more studio support, but HD-DVD is still doing very well (compared to Blu-Ray at least...overall high def format sales are a bit sluggish). The recent "Pornogate" thing may give HD-DVD an advantage, and keep in mind Sony's media formats have tanked more times than not in the past.

It's still too early to say. HD-DVD does have 300 titles slated to come out this year, so there's bound to be at least a couple films each month you're interested in.

For 160 bucks it's pretty impossible to go wrong, I'd definitely get it while the coupon is valid if you're thinking about it. You're getting a player, a remote, and a movie for that price. Even if Blu-Ray does "win" a year or two down the road, it's not like all of a sudden the movies you bought on HD-DVD stop working.

If you don't want it to fail "a year or even two" down the road, then you shouldn't buy either format since there is no guarantee on either side. For me, the choice was easy - risk $500 on Blu-Ray, or risk $160 on HD-DVD.

i dropped $200 on it and i think it was one of the best purchases ever...

Anyways... poseidon got a great review.. looks like a must own

What can I do with that remote that came with the HD player?
Think anyone would buy it? I already have the Harmony which rocks.
What can I do with that remote that came with the HD player?

I really wish they would come out with a radio frequency remote instead of IR.

I have the Harmony remote, too and I don't think it works well with the HD drive. There are issues with the in-movie menus (scene selection, etc.) on HD-DVDs that the Harmony has no button to directly correspond with.

But I have trouble with the pack-in remote ejecting the standard DVD tray and not the HD tray, as well, so who knows.
I really wish they would come out with a radio frequency remote instead of IR.
They do. It's called the Harmony 890.

I use an 880 with my HD DVD ad on with zero problems...the center button in the middle of the directional pad is my "click" for everything that needs an input in the menus...and there is a menu button on the harmony already.

With the recent Google Checkout deals, I now own:

2 Fast 2 Furious
Cinderella Man
King Kong
Pitch Black
The Chronicles of Riddick
The Fast and the Furious

I got all of them besides Kong for about $12 shipped. I'm glad that it lasts until March because I'm looking forward to Babel, Children of Men, The Departed, and the NIN concert.
Wish Google Checkout worked for me, I'd love to pick up Hulk.

Oh well.
You try different browsers and maybe emailing them?

This months EGM ranked the XBOX HD player as the worst player available. They also gave the PS3 Blue Ray as best current player. Are you guys satisfied with your HD DVD? I'm thinking of purchasing but don't want to waste 200 presidents on a cheap HD player with "Choppy Sections.":bomb:

What do they mean by "choppy sections" cause I've never noticed anything of the sort.

Have had my HD drive since day one and absolutely love it. Own around twenty HD-DVDs and none of them are choppy.

EGM is a publication of full of sophmoric, unfunny douchbags who will soon cease publishing their piece of shit magazine as Ziff Davis continues to be picked apart. The HD-DVD player is fantastic, and shame on them for not at least trying another player (or another disc, for that matter) if they were having those kinds of problems. I own one, I know a friend who owns one, and I've tried nearly a dozen HD-DVDs (and dozens of DVDs on it) and have never had a single problem like that. Neither has he. It's pretty obvious from the hardware thread here that the many people who bought it on this forum are happy as well.

The main gripe is no HDMI, and that is a glaring issue, but as far as technical issues, none.

At least the HD-DVD player is capable of scaling properly thanks to the 360's software updates. The PS3 Blu-Ray is the best Blu-Ray player? Wow, Blu-Ray players must suck ass. They probably think it's the best because it has HDMI 1.3 or some other farce of a reason.
You try different browsers and maybe emailing them?
Yeah. I'm guessing it's because I use the same card, that's about the only variable I haven't changed yet. I may try it with another one.

I shows how uninformed EGM is to say it is the owrst. There are only 2 HD-DVD players out that can do 1080p and the 360 is one of them. I have had great picture quality and no problems.

I also have a PS3 and it is good as well. Still, I don't like the fact that the remote does not have an on/off button and is not universal.

It may do 1080p, but only through VGA and into a monitor that accepts it, my 1080p JVC RPTV has the input for VGA, but will only output 480p from it, kinda sucks that I ordered the cable just for this, oh well, Ill probably just find an RGB cable for one of my old systems that accept it and plug it in that way (probably my model 2 genesis)

...and EGM's review on the player defiantely seemed biased, since all reviews Ive seen on the player have been glowing

i agree with most of what you say, but egm is the only people claiming the ps3 blueray player is the best.

this is the biggest garbage i have read in a long time.... are the fucking nuts? The 360 hd drive is actually a second generation drive and is quite good...

Ok, we LOVE the player....let's not dwell on EGM. I finally started Clerks II last night....funny movie, but the child interupted, so I'll finish this weekend hopefully.
Have had my HD drive since day one and absolutely love it. Own around twenty HD-DVDs and none of them are choppy.
Same here. I was a little reluctant at first to buy one, but I'm glad I did.

Ok, I got my free EGM today and had literally only about 60 seconds before I had to get back to work. I did not see the comment about "choppy" playback (it's possible I missed it, I will look again when I have more time). I did see the reviewer, who only had a small corner box, say that they noticed add-on's picture was not as "sharp" as the PS3's, which is almost as asinine as the choppy comment, but whatever.

The overall tone of the article is certainly favoring Blu-Ray as far as who will win the format war, but I can't say I blame them in that regard.

And not to get too far off track, but the magazine looks like one of those starving kids on the commercials. I've seen gossip rags that are thicker than this month's issue. Back when EGM was relevant, once they got around to the holidays they'd frequently have issues that rivaled the size of your local telephone book. Yeah, that was partially due to ads, but there was a shit-ton of content to go with it....and it wasn't stuff that insulted your intelligence and tried to put humor before info.

Doubledown - did you have the DVD version of Clerks II? Just wondering if there really are exclusive extras or whatever. I should have my copy tomorrow if not.

Usually the magazines (seen this with alot of them) all seem to have less content around this time of the year. EGM also favored BR in the article because they were supposed to be getting porn, which we all know is not the case anymore... kinda stupid for them to pin so much of a formats success on whether or not they get porn movies. What annoys me with EGM is the frat boy insulting tone of the magazine, such as insulting reader mail with the frequency that they do. The worst was the article on Rumble Roses (I think, it was one like that) which featured a picture of some dude in a bathroom stall looking at pics of the game and jerking hinself off, it was stupid.

I prefer Tips and tricks but dont want to pay for that or any mag

and on topic, Clerks 2 was pretty nice in the HD, you can see every little crater in these actors faces
