Don't bother, no PCM or Dolby TrueHD track on either.
That's ok, I have an add-on so lossless doesn't matter. And I don't have a receiver that would support it if I did.
because chicks are impressed by HD
Nah they aren't impressed usually by HD. The HD is for me, if I have to sit through it. The movie itself is for chicks.

Ugh, I almost don't want to buy Breach now.

So which studios use that kind of case design? The case like Breach where if you're looking at the spine, it's much more squared off at the tops and bottoms like the BR cases, unlike the Warner cases? It seems like Universal is the only one using it and they have that damn flap on the side which is so irritating.
Awww fuck, got my first, fucked up combo disc. Smokin' Aces, thing locks up right in the middle.
My saga of Smokin' Aces:

ordered from Amazon on "buy HD-DVDs from Amazon day" which was 2 weeks ago as of tomorrow. Disc ends up being sent to the wrong address for some unknown reason and is then returned to Amazon. I got an email about it yesterday morning and that my money will be refunded. Then last night I was at Best Buy and saw it was only $29.99 so I just bought it on the spot. I got home, started watching the movie, and about 1/2 way through it locked up. Returned it today and got another one. The second one wouldn't even load at all. I returned the second one and got a third one. Now, *knock on wood* I'm watching the third copy and despite taking a little while to load the main menu after the Universal opening logo, I haven't had a problem yet.

I've had no problem playing any other HD-DVD (well except for a super scratched up one from blockbuster.com) until this and it really has me wary about buying Universal combo discs online due to having to return this one so many times. They need to either get their shit together with these things or drop the combo format altogether (which I'd prefer anyway...) because this is ridiculous.

Did you try running it under hot water?

I heard that fixed most of the issues with the combo discs.

I don't mind the flap, what's so irritating about it?

What's irritating is prying open a dvd case to have the disc go flying because it wasn't secured well enough.

No but if the third disc was fucked up that's what I was gonna do next.

I'd really like to know what the support for combo discs is.

It has nothing to do with the Combo discs. This, along with Good Shepard and Children of Men are having issues. Universal is fixing them via new discs or a firmware update shortly.

I hope Universal rereleases some of these combos to HD only discs. I wanna pick up some titles that are combo currently, but I just hate the combos.

They are. Army of Darkness is the 1st one to be re-released.

It wasn't terrible, but I didn't like the fact that they tried to cash in on the Fast and the Furious name. Unless they actually get Vin to come back for the fourth, in which case I won't mind as much.

Finally started Planet Earth...don't know if I agree with 5 star PQ when you base it against King Kong or Hulk or Batman Begins, but considering it's a documentary and they can't always have the "nice" equipment a regular film would have, it's definitely the best it can be. Entertaining as hell too, I've only watched the first two episodes so far but I'm hooked.

Anyone know what Amazon's behavior for shipping early is on multiple-item orders? A lot of times when I order two or three things and one is a pre-order, they'll ship part of it early at no charge. I've currently got the NIN film/concert, Mallrats, Big Lewbowski, and Eternal Sunshine all ordered/preordered. With Eternal Sunshine hitting stores this week I figured they would have shipped what was there, but nothing yet. It's not a big deal, but I want to know if I'm really going to have to wait until the first week in July to get it.
Tokyo Drift sucked ass! One of the worst movies ever! I loved F&F 1 & 2 but TD was horrendous.
IMO TD was the best

Is there any truth to the HD combo discs having problems during pressing? I heard that it was from the dual press (press one side then the other) that is causing all the problems. Some how the discs get warped on second stamping. Just curious if anybody else has seen this, especially with all the crazy rumors and lies going around about both formats.
IMO TD was the best
Oh come on, the acting was horrible and the plot was useless. Specially hated the end, when the guy returns the money and the Tokyo mobster is pissed and he says "what you think just because you brought it back you can go home safely?", and then the other guy goes, "lets settle it by racing"...that was so fucking cheesy. Also the part where the redneck almost gets shot and the dad saves him and the other guy takes off, he tells his son he's on the next flight home, and he says "no I have to do this..." and the dad looks at him and goes "ok"...that was just plain horrible writting. The only good part of the film was the driving chase seen where that one dude dies in his car.

Out of all the Combo's made, only these 3 have issues. So its not a pressing issue with those 70+ Combo's already on shelves.

Fast and the Furious went downhill after they got rid of Paul Walker. Any movie with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker starring screams box office gold.

While I'd love for them both to be in 4, only having Vin would still bring in plenty IMO.
Has anyone see Alpha Dog? I was put off since Justin Timberlake was in it, but the previews looks pretty good.
Alpha Dog is pretty good. Its not at all what you're probably expecting and surprisingly enough Justin Timberlake is a pretty decent and convincing actor. Remember, there was a day when Marky Mark was breaking into acting...
Has anyone see Alpha Dog? I was put off since Justin Timberlake was in it, but the previews looks pretty good.
I didn't like it, but I thought Timberlake was the best part about the movie. He acted really well in it.

That's not even remotely close to how combos are made. Just like all double-sided discs, the sides are pressed individually and then glued together. Here's what it looks like when the glue doesn't hold:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=80810
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=80811

The prevailing theory is that Universal has screwed something up with the process recently, and some outgassing from the glue inside the keepcase causes a film to form on the surface of the disc which interferes with the laser reading the small pits of the HD side (as the SD side is apparently unaffected). Boiling the disc for a few seconds or washing it with dish soap fixes the problem in most cases.

I tried the hot water trick and it let me watch the disc no problem on Saturday afternoon but when I put it in last night, it wouldn't even load the disc. I'll keep going back to Best Buy until I exhaust their entire stock of unopened Smokin' Aces.

...and you will get a movie from the same batch.

Is there a way to quickly add bookmarks on the 360 HD add-on using the controller? If I press the B button on the controller it just brings up the controls.
Is there a way to quickly add bookmarks on the 360 HD add-on using the controller? If I press the B button on the controller it just brings up the controls.
I could have sworn that there was an option...this is what I dug up from the XBOX support side:

Five-disc resume (bookmarking): Xbox 360 maintains a single bookmark for each of up to five DVD movies. When a movie is stopped or if the console is powered down during playback, the console will remember, or bookmark, your location in the movie. The next time you load this movie, playback will commence from the bookmarked point. Bookmarks work only if the console is connected to either an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an Xbox 360 Memory Unit.
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/media/viewvideo.htm

I thought the B or Y button added a bookmark for the HD-DVD drive...although, maybe the movie has to support it.

The auto resume seems to work also.
I thought the B or Y button added a bookmark for the HD-DVD drive
It will add a bookmark on HD DVDs that support it (ie, Planet Earth doesn't support it). Most titles seem to though.

DVDs are just resumed from where you last played them, no bookmarking necessary.

And for those who didn't know, there is a more advanced bookmarking system on Smokin Aces.

You can actually save entire clips as book marks, and then go back and watch them all together.
Auto resume never works on my HD-DVDs. Whenever I shut off, it starts the movie up again at the start. Works fine with DVDs though.
Are you pressing "Stop" then shutting off? If you're just shutting off, it won't bookmark.

that's the sort of cool shit i was hoping for from next-gen dvds!
that's the sort of cool shit i was hoping for from next-gen dvds!
That's probably just scratching the surface. One thing HD DVD definitely has going for it right now is more bells and whistles like that. If used properly, the internet-interactive features of upcoming discs could blow this thing wide open.

I really wish the downloadable subtitles feature would be added as I want to buy the Dutch import of "Ghost Of Mae Nak" already and download English subs for it.
Are you pressing "Stop" then shutting off? If you're just shutting off, it won't bookmark.
Am I doing something wrong then? I just tried with Serenity on the 360 HD-DVD add-on. I tried both pressing "Stop" on the media remote then shutting down using the "On/Off" on the same remote. Then I tried pressing stop through the user GUI when using the controller and then shutting down by holding down the Guide button and selecting "Shut Down Console". Both times, it didn't auto-resume. Goes right back to the very start of the disc.

That's weird...Sounds like youre doing it right. Maybe it only works on certain movies?...maybe the next update will fix it?---Sorry I couldn't be more help.

...or my money refunded in store credit, which is what I got today.
That's weird...Sounds like youre doing it right. Serenity didn't have a "My Scenes" feature anyway so maybe that has something to do with not being able to resume. I tried it as well with Fearless, trying to add a chapter and seeing if it'd restart, but it froze up for a bit. I'll attribute that to it being a combo disc. I'll check my other discs though out of curiousity. I find it odd that it won't auto-resume on every disc since DVDs work just fine.

Is there a parental lock/control on the Xbox 360 HD add-on?

I put in Clerks 2 today and it loaded up a black screen. After cleaning it off, I put it again and it mentioned something about a parental control, but then loaded up the menu.

I am confused.

I haven't tested this yet, but I don't think auto-resume works at all for HD DVDs, only for DVDs.

On the flipside, bookmarking/my scenes only works on HD-DVDs, not DVDs.

Mine does that too. It's likely checking for the parental controls before loading the menu. No big deal. The black screen was probably just a one-off thing where it failed to load. I get those once in a great while.

Thanks. I just thought it was weird since I have other HD R-rated movies (Slither, Smokin Aces, etc.) and that screen has never popped up before.

well, I bought a copy of Dream Girls, Hitcher and Alpha Dog each for $25.99 and this was the first time I had a real hard time deciding if HD was worth it. I'm still not convinced it was.:whistle2:k
