So, I'm new to this thread, just picked up my 360 add-on (used at EB games :whistle2:D)... I just read news that Heroes, the TV show, is coming to HD-DVD (no date yet). Sorry if its been mentioned already, but I think its awesome news.

It was mentioned, but it's worth repeating. I know people that are buying an HD DVD player mostly for that show.

I wish Universal would announce "House MD" Season 1 already. I'm sure it's a lock.
Hit me up on XBL when you get it.

I want to make sure you can turn off the spanish subs (on the 360 add-on) before I order it.
The site says you can:

Spanish subtitles (can be removed - see below)

The following must be done in order to remove the Spanish subtitles for English audio playback (only applies to the movie itself):

1. Begin the movie
2. Within a few seconds of playback pause the movie
3. Push the "Chapter Back" button in order to "move" the movie back to the very beginning (0:00)
4. Use the Menu Button to Select "Idiomas"
5. Select "Ingles" and then "Sin Subtitulos"
6. Hit the Menu Button and then push Play

Universal Breaks Silence on HD DVD Playback Issues; Announces Disc Replacement Program

"Universal is currently investigating reports that Children of Men, The Good Shepherd, and select other discs not playing properly in some HD DVD players. While we believe this is limited to a small number of HD DVD discs, Universal is offering a replacement service for any customers who are experiencing this problem. We are still investigating the cause and will provide further updates as we get them. Any customer problems should be directed to [email protected]."

Good news for all those out there that had issues.

I've been having trouble with them lately.

Try PMing MovieMinded over at HighDefDigest. He's the owner of the company.

My Planet Earth preorder still hasn't showed up even though he said that they had plenty to fill all of the preorders and the fact it was mailed Priority last week.

Anyone looking for Clerks II HD DVD? (Used Complete/Mint)

If anyone's willing to trade I'll take any of these for it:

HD DVD The Mummy
HD DVD Accepted
HD DVD Smokin' Aces
HD DVD Van Helsing

did anyone get any of the new hd dvds this week...is it worth spending the extra money for the visuals on either dreamgirls or alpha dog...

also did anyone order planet earth from amazon..mine still hasn't even shipped
also did anyone order planet earth from amazon..mine still hasn't even shipped
I'm honestly wondering if that April 15th blitz kind of caught them off-guard. I ordered stuff that was shown as in stock, but it has not shipped yet either. This may be at least partially due to the fact that I put in a few pre-relases alongside it, though. Did you order anything else with it?

For what it's worth, they're trying to get another "buy HD DVDs" day for 5/28 going on AVS. I don't know how well it's going, they seem to have some support, but having it only a little over a month from the first one seems like its pushing it. Once every three months would be more than enough.
The site says you can
Thanks LP. I saw that menu trick last night when I almost ordered from Xploited Cinema.

It probably will work on all players, but I sort of want to make sure 360 add-on owners can do it before I drop $40

I did order some other things, but it was vhs tapes from the marketplace they have...I have a co worker that does a lot of fixing up thing on stuff i break...so he does the work for free, and I have to buy him a vhs tape on occassion...they have shipped but I haven't gotten them...I did look at my credit card balance online, and it looks like the planet earth dvd charge is in the temp auth file...so I would imagine they should ship b4 the end of the week:bouncy:

Going back a page or two, here's something from Amir regarding lack of auto-resume on HD DVD, from the highdefdigest forums:

Resume is a lot more complicated to do in these new formats. The menu system that you see is a full (HDi) application which is running. If you turn off the machine, there is no way to know what the app was doing. You have to do the equiv. of suspending your laptop which is too complicated to implement in an HD DVD player. The application could easily to do it, as it does with bookmarks and some titles may attempt this soon. We are also working on another solution but it requires firmware upgrade and some title changes to work.

I wasn't expecting much from Dream Girls but it is a really good movie and it looks pretty damn nice in HD, i was very much impressed. So if you have any interest in it I would say it is worth it.

I bought Alpha Dog but I haven't opened it yet, I'll try it tonight and get back to you.

I pre-ordered The Fountain on hd-dvd/dvd(combo) despite not having a HD-DVD player...it's probably not worth it since i think my parents tv can only do 480p and my monitor does whatever the vga thing is close to 720p

I watch on a little 19" widescreen monitor and I don't regret my jump into the HD arena.

The 2:31 ratio movies are a little hard to really see the difference but 1:78/1:85 ratio movies really shine since they take up the entire screen.

Interesting, The Fountain is in 1:66. I have a 22" Acer widescreen. You think it's worth getting a hd-dvd addon for my 360?

I'm looking for deals for it but nothing really hot yet.

EBgames has the $25 gift card with purchase, or you can check Samsclub and/or Costco, supposedly they have them at $150 or lower.

If you ask me, yeah it's always nice to make the jump while you can.

If I remember right KaneRobot also has the HD-DVD attachment with a 22" Acer. You should PM him.

Also, if you don't mind a used player, go to the gamestop website and search for the hd-dvd player. On the search results, look at the bottom and make sure it says "show backordered items" or whatever. You can then click on the "used" HD-player, then do a search for stores in your area that have it used. Its $150 used, plus 10% off if you have the edge card (or if you say you forgot your edge card at home, store employees are usually nice enough to let you use the Store's edge card), plus another 10% if you have the Game Informer coupon.

The only downside is that it doesn't include the remote or King Kong. The remote is $15 used.

24" Dell....I do remember someone else talk about buying that Acer though. SHOW YOURSELF, WHOEVER YOU ARE.

As far as the player itself, I'd recommend just holding out for a deal on a new one, rather than getting a used drive. Better to wait, get $50 off (or whatever) and get a free movie and remote.

Yeah, it did kind of suck not having a remote and movie right off the bat, but the coupons and edge card brought it down to about $120 before tax, and I traded in some stuff, so it worked out. If you add a used HD-DVD movie (typically under $20) and a used remote (the 10% card + 10% coupon work for both of those, too), you get the whole "package" of the new drive for $150. Even less than that if you do it this week since its "Buy 2, get 1 free" on used accessories, dvds and games... you would be able to get this package for $15 less since the remote is free.
thanks...
I got home from work last night and since the weather was bad nothing was on TV so I decided to pop in Alpha Dog...............then my power blew out. So I didn't get a chance to even test it. I'll try tonight.

Just noticed that you live near me. I bought my used HD-DVD player at Gamestop in Winter Park. There should be used ones on the other side of town, one on Kirkman and another on Sand Lake. If you're interested in buying a used one, check there, call first though, sometimes their inventory is different than what shows up online.
I'm about to bite on this as well. Have you received it yet? If so, any quick impressions? Thanks.
Still being shipped. Took the fastest delivery option so it should be in either today or tomorrow.

Sweet! Let us know how it goes. If this one's good, I hope that they release the first one as well on HD DVD.

HD players are more prone to not playing scratched HD discs versus DVDs right?

I just got my order for Planet Earth and disc 2 has horrible scratches on the outermost part of the disc from the holder it was placed on (you'll see a small ridge if you have the packaging). So should I expect skipping/errors towards the last half of the disc then? I wanna test it out and fast-forward to possible problem areas before I ask for an exchange from Amazon. Outer-most part of the disc = end of videos?
Those who enjoyed Planet Earth, this should be good news for you:

"Blue Planet" announcement
:applause: It is.

If only HDDVDWorld didn't lose my Planet Earth.

----------

Some more good news.

Warner also will release One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Amadeus in both high-definition disc formats, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, in February 2008, in time for the 80th anniversary of the Academy Awards.

Well I was in Orlando up till a week ago. I'm actually home for the summer in the St. Pete/Tampa area. Thanks for the info though.

I did a search according to your tip and a Gamestop somewhat near me has "1-3". I might go check it out. Looks like the Game Informer coupon is expired though.

Heads-up (and I should have mentioned this earlier) - this is not the "Blue Planet" that was done by the same people that did Planet Earth, this Blue Planet is an older IMAX film. However, from what I recall people seemed to really like it, so it probably doesn't matter and still should be a worthy purchase for those who liked PE.

Yeah, I looked it up before I commented.

I love space so this is a must buy for me.
