HD DVD thread - Toshiba: HD DVD DISCONTINUED, REPAIR/SUPPORT CONTINUES, NO BLU PLANS

Here's a scary rumor that I hope is just a rumor:

Rumour: Largest HD-DVD studio, Universal, going neutral

Heise Online, a German IT website, is reporting that during a press conference, representatives from Pioneer announced that Universal will break their exclusivity agreement with HD DVD. This would allow Universal, the only large studio exclusively supporting HD DVD, to freely distribute their movies on Blu-ray. It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal.

It has long been speculated that Universal was receiving monetary compensation for being an exclusive HD DVD studio. This announcement would signal that they have decided to forgo the compensation in order to release titles on Blu-ray. Most would agree that this move would effectively end the war, and no matter what side you support, a single HD format is the best long term solution.

And on other happy news, the HD DVD XBOX360 update should show up between now and the 22nd of this month. Posters stated that Amirm confirmed this, though I can't find the post.

Also, found alternate cover art for Underworld Evolution...Its in English!

The BR one's have been tossing that around Linkin and piss on them. Shake em' off!
Question Ryan, you Type 1 or 2 Diabetes?

Linkin I never pictured you as a married man, thought you were single.

Good to hear. I figured it was just Sony fanboy chatter.

I'm 26, my wife. then Finacee found out she was pregnant back in December, she had no insurance since she took time off from work to relax, we were planning on getting married next year but since she needed insurance, we figured what the hell. Been married since January.
Sporadic bummer to hear about your profiles being fragged.
It isn't that big of a deal.

I was able to do an account restore on my main one, I just lost MrJapans and my friend's account.

note: the thread re: this rumor has been closed at both AVSforum's Blu-Ray & HD DVD forum. people seem to think it's pioneer BSing because they have a crazy expensive BR player coming out in germany soon.

Just got Total Recall in the mail today, and about to watch it. I'll post my thoughts on it afterwards, but no pics (I think Sporadic or someone mentioned that they'd do that anyways).

Total Recall looks awesome. Actually, it's probably one of the best looking movies I have seen on HD. Definitely worth it for anyone on the fence about ordering it or any Arnold fan.

You lucky bastard.

I have that and La Haine on order from Xploited Cinema. It mailed out Monday via Media Mail so I'm hoping to get either today or tomorrow.

Hurry up
Yeah, I know. I ordered it Monday so I was shocked to see it here today.

How's it work on the 360 attachment? Any issues?

Any extras?
How's it work on the 360 attachment? Any issues?

Any extras?
No issues. At the very beginning a screen popped up asking me to select a language. I chose English and from there, I didn't have to turn off subtitles or anything like that (very happy to see that). This is my first imported movie, too, so I don't know if that kind of thing is what usually happens or not. There are a few extras, but I didn't get a chance to check them out. I'll post them in the morning before I head out.

I don't understand why places like Xploited won't sell "Volcano High". It's got no subs, big deal. It's an ACTION flick for crying out loud! I'm probably gonna have to end up getting it from Play-Asia or YesAsia. X-(
edit: Btw I'll be getting "The Fountain" and telling ya'll how it is.

Alright, Xploited Cinema/HD-DVD trip report time.

I ordered my movies (USPS Media Mail) on the 6th, they shipped on the 7th and I receieved them on the 11th.

Shipped in a normal envelope.

My movies were wrapped in a Priority box for protection :)

The front of my movies. Total Recall's packaging is completely in French while La Haine is completely in English.

The back of the cases. Again Total Recall in French while La Haine is in English.

I popped Total Recall into my 360 and was greeted with this menu to select the language. After that there was a little preview movie of the upcoming Studio Canal releases.

The menu of Total Recall. Just a simple menu setup with clips of the movie playing in the background.

Picture of Artie's head about to explode :)

Next I popped in La Haine. It automatically defaulted to English. Same type of menu as Total Recall.

And that's it. I haven't had a chance to watch the movies yet but Total Recall looked great while La Haine looked pretty good for a 10+ year old black and white movie.

Great service from Xploited. Even though I used the cheapest shipping available, it only took 5 days for them to show up.
I checked my amazon preorder for The Fountain and its estimated ship date is a week after the movie comes out, wtf.
I'm guessing you used super saver shipping?

I got my copy from the WB sale in the mail today. (on BR, but still)

I grabbed alpha dog from Best Buy on my way home from my last final. Going to give it a watch tonight. Just to save me from having to read back tons of pages, is the 360 HD-DVD player region free? Or are all these import movies people are getting grouped into region 1?

HD DVD doesn't have region coding, so all HD DVD players, including the X360 add-on are region free.
Yeah but wha'd you pay for that $40?!
$34.22 shipped.
I have no clue why they have Star Wars HD DVD covers though :whistle2:s
People can dream, right? :D
I'm guessing you used super saver shipping?
Yeah, I'm probably gonna cancel it and try to get it somewhere else.

What do you all think of dvdpacific.com?

I placed an order for The Fountain hd/dvd combo for $21 shipped. Also they are located in Florida so the media mail shipping I chose should still manage to get to me in a timely manner.

Well, finally got around to pre-ordering my Ultimate Matrix Collection. I figured the animatrix and random special features were worth the extra $12 as I was only originally planning on getting the Complete Collection but since I don't have the Animatrix otherwise, might as well...

Some people have already somehow acquired the matrix collection. The base version (cheaper) apparently comes with a code for Live to download Animatrix. (not known if it's HD or not, but most likely not.)

So you do get the animatrix with the cheap Matrix collection if you have a 360.

Eh, I'd still prefer to have a physical copy of it. Are you sure the code for the download isn't just for a rental? I don't know of any movies on XBL arcade that are anything but rentals.

Any word on reviews for it thrust?

Also in case anyone is interested I plan to pick up "Volcano High" and "Brave Story" so I'll tell ya'll how they look.
I'd also be getting "Ghost Of Mae Nak" but it has no English Subtitles.
Any word on reviews for it thrust?
Sure.
The people that have seen it are talking about it here. I skimmed through, but it seems the general consensus is about half of the first movie is somewhat grainy (which the master is) and the rest is very very good. Probably tier 1.

Oh and even better, apparently, is the sound. Very awesome booming sound. I expect the HD DVD fix will be out within 8 days.

Warner Home Video is running a limited time offer for consumers who bought The Complete Matrix Trilogy HD DVD set. Those who bought this HD DVD set are entitled to one FREE download of The Animatrix on Xbox Live (FREE download is for use exclusively on the Xbox 360 in the United States. Requires broadband and Xbox Console/Live connection.) See Details in specially-marked The Complete Matrix Trilogy HD DVD Products. While supplies last.

.....

I finally got around to watching FEAST and Children of Men over the weekend (both rentals). No issues with either one also...Feast was a fun movie, not sure how HD it really looked though. CoM looked pretty good though.
Feast was a fun movie, not sure how HD it really looked though
Most of the reviews I read of that film on HD mentioned it had a soft transfer.

I picked up Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (HD) over the weekend. Great movie, nice transfer. It was rated mid Tier 3 on AVS, probably because of the murky-looking dark scenes and some overtly bright scenes. I still thought it was a nice upgrade from the SD release (which I also own) though.

The next couple weeks will be expensive for HD-DVD owners, lots of good stuff coming out. Hopefully the May 21st release of Le Pacte De Loups (French import) will finally stick.

Also I heard the HD-DVD update is coming tomorrow, any truth to that?
When the fuck is Shaun of the Dead coming out already?!?
