Hip-Hop ain't dead~!! It's the D-d-d-d-d-discussion Thread!

I am going to do everyone a favor, if you like actual hip-hop and you do not know who Brother Ali is then you are missing out on some of the finest shit there is.
Brother Ali - Truth is Here = Best Album of the year. Also check out Shadows on the Sun and Champion Ep.
Black Bastards for a dollar? fuck! That was one hell of a find, worth a lot and quite rare. The best gems I've found were Ras Kass's Soul On Ice for $9 and Kool G Rap's Live and Let Die for $3.
Is it really that rare? I know I'd never seen it on shelves before but I figured that it only saw release a few years ago (despite being recorded well over a decade ago) so it can't be that rare, can it?

Those are some nice finds on your part, by the way.

Wow, have we really not mentioned Ali until now? Good check on that. The whole Rhymesayers collective could be worth a listen if people have been sleeping on that. As for me, you know I copped The Undisputed Truth, especially since it only cost me $9 for the CD/DVD package. I also managed to pick up Ali's first two CDs for $4 apiece at Tower's closing sale.

If you ever get a chance to see him live you owe it to yourself to do it. He rips it. Shows are cheap too. I have caught him twice. Met him both times and he is a cool cat.

First time I've heard that being rare

edit: By the way, has anyone else checked out Memo's newest instrumental disc Lake Effect? IMO, its the best one he's done to date.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned him yet either, like the other poster said. I want to see him in concert but the only time I can is next week or so and I think it's the night before a final, so that's out.

Anywho, anyone else here a Mr. Lif fan? He puts on a fuckin' amazing show and I hope I get to see him next Saturday.

You people do need to check out the Sol.illa album if you haven't already. I picked that album up last year when it dropped because I thought that the art looked interesting and I've got to say that it is the most pleasant musical surprise I've stumbled upon since Extended Family back in 2002 or whenever that album dropped.

If you like stuff like Sol.illa though, you guys should check out Level Jumpers. It's some local Detroit stuff (that I somehow stumbled upon out here in Arkansas through the magic of the inter-webs) and the two albums they made (specifically Simply Complx) are both incredible chill, pure hip-hop albums. They've sort of broken up now, but Skrapz (one of the guys in the group) came out with a solo album last year and it's got to be one of the better albums start to finish that I've listened to in a long time.

Anyway, that's all I'm going to say for now, I could rant for days though. Good thread idea I think. Peace.
Anyone here like 2pac's work (I'm sure more than a few of you do)? While I'm not a huge fanatic like most of his fans are, he had a few great albums under his belt. Did anyone here like 2001's 'Until the End of Time'? I personally think it might be his best work, despite him not having much to do with it besides the vocals. The production is sound and it represents all the sides of Pac.
I have always been a pretty big Pac fan. Lyrically he was one of the greatest.

Anyone listen to Sage Francis or his stuff with Joe Beats as Non-Prophets?

Joe's a really chill guy, actually working on an article about him...and I'm procrastinating, of course.
but he was dead for a few years in 01 -_-

still, Me Against the World is the shit, but it's also sadly the only album I really kno him for...

not having heard All Eyes on Me is a bigger shame than never listening to The Infamous until 2003

btw Del's album is prolly never gonna come out, he's become the new Fatlip!!!

and yeay the Coup is dope, but I never heard of these soliloqui cats or whatever, I hope they're on emusic!
I still dont have anything by Mobb Deep :hot:

I plan on picking up 'the Infamous' sometime this year though.

Sage Francis is the shit, like with Slug I just wish he wasn't called emo. Maybe art fag (since he is more of a poet than anything) but not emo.

I remember seeing Sage at the first Rock the Bells... He had about 5 colored wigs on that he used in his performance for "The Strange Famous Mullet Remover" and at one point he brought out a big brown paper bag and started slinging fried chicken drumsticks into the crowd.

You should get Joe Beat's solo stuff. It's really good instrumental hip-hop, at least in my opinion. Also, his Indie Rock Blues album is great.

I've got Diverse Recourse and Reverse Discourse and I have to agree, that shit is pretty sweet.

I cant stand Sage, my friend dragged me to a Sage/Sole concert once... it sucked so bad.... there were so many high school kids in the crowd too.

regarding Brother Ali, one of my problems with music is I have too much Backlog, so I try to listen to music while preoccupied with other things. Like I had an ipod in college, but sold it coz I never used it afterword. Now since my phone is an MP3 player, I carry headphones with me everywhere just in case a convenient time arrives to turn on some Planet Asia or 7L Esoteric shit I got loaded on the mem stick. It's only 1gb on there but that's all I need.

I also burn a crapload of CDs for the car since I spend a lot of time in there.

but umm... o yeah Brother Ali. So I heard his Shadows of the Sun album once, and I cant even remember it!!! so many ppl say about how good he is, but my memory is blank with him! I really like his track on the Molemen record tho.

Rozz>> if u havent heard them before, you will definitely dig the Infamous. But personally Hell on Earth is one of my top 5 records ever. But that's becoz I useta listen to it when I was still in grade school on my walkman.

anyway I'ma D those deepspace5 tracks now to check them out. In the meantime, here's some music videos for u guys, Pharcyde edition:

Tre Hardson (slimkid3) - Something to Live for

Fatlip - Worst Case Sceniario

Pharcyde (sans Fatlip & Tre) - Knew U

I Never heard Humboldt Beginnings (the last Pharcyde album, which the 3rd vid comes from), but heard it sucked. The only non-solo post Labcabin stuff of their's I heard is Chapter 1 and it did indeed suck. These dudes need to either completely break up (coz Pharcyde aint 2 members) or reunite

edit: Supreme>> Soul on Ice is a real good record. Altho I cant say the same for Rasassination, which is like half dope half commercial. I guess he was tryin to crossover. I havent listened to any of Ras Kass stuff since, I kno I got Institutionalized & Revenge of the Spit somewhere. I still needa listen to more G Rap tho, not too familiar with his stuff.

and if you like Ras Kass u should check out Vakill. His style is extremely similar, but Vakill is just amazing!!! He's currently my favorite emcee, and that's from listening to a record he made in 2003 (The Darkest Cloud). His 06 album, Worst Fears Confirmed, isnt any worse either. His lyrical skill aint human

These dudes need to either completely break up (coz Pharcyde aint 2 members) or reunite

The new Jazz Liberatorz track has me psyched as Tre, Omni and Fatlip still know how to bring it and there isn't a hint of animosity (more like 3 friends getting back together, trying to find their groove again).

Jekki, I have heard Mobb Deep and I plan on getting both the Infamous and Hell on Earth this year, though I heard their last two albums (especially the one on G-Unit records - Blood Money) sucked.

Jazz Liberatorz wtf?!?!??! I gotta google dat shit down~!!!

anyway has any1 heard of Marco Polo?? He's like some new (or old?) underground producer who did the beat for Yeah (among others) on the latest Boot Camp album.

He's comin out w/ an album on the newly revived Rawkus (who recently put out records by The Procussions and Kidz in the Hall). The first song features Masta Ace, I saw the vid and I just HAVE to share it!!!!

Marco Polo f/ Masta Ace - Nostalgia

I can seriously listen to masta Ace all fuckin day. I think if I were to put a lot of thought and effort into it, Masta Ace would be one of my top 5 emcees of all time.

some other real interesting tidbits of news I read at hiphopsite.com forums:

Pete Rock Announces New Album "NY's Finest" This Summer On Nature Sounds
PETE ROCK will return with his latest full-length opus, NY's Finest, scheduled for release on Nature Sounds this summer.

Following in the tradition of his Soul Survivor series, the new LP will spotlight Pete's beats, with guest emcees rhyming over them (with Pete himself appearing on five tracks).

Focusing mostly on NYC based artists, the LP will include appearances from Papoose, Jim Jones, The Lox, Raekwon, Ghostface, Masta Killah, Cappadona, plus additional support from MF Doom, Slum Village, Redman, and others.

"914" featuring Styles P. and Sheek Louch is the first song leaked from the LP.

hot shit~!!!

All of Doom's albums are pretty much hard to find. I believe this ones rare because the cover was banned/controversial, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah, Soul On Ice is one of my personal favorite west coast albums. Rassassination though, was pretty much what you said, his attempt at being commercial. It's sad that he didn't get his big break thanks to the shit with him and Priority. It would've been cool to see how him and Dre could work together. And about Kool G Rap, you need to peep his shit ASAP! In my book, he is the greatest of all time.

Yeah, I've heard some of Vakill's stuff. He's dope, but I'm not too crazy about him. Maybe I just need his stuff to grow on me over time.

If I remember correctly, Bl_ck B_st_rds was never released back in '94 when the album was recorded. There was some controversy over the lynched Sambo cover, and the label decided it was easier to shelve it than deal with the media coverage.

However, the album was released in 2001, seemingly without any controversy. Seeing as how that was only 6 years ago, I have a feeling that it's not too rare, though I don't know how limited the release was.

---

My brother got back from Coachella and said that Brother Ali's performance was so good that he actually won over my brother's rap-hating friend.

Jazz Liberatorz wtf?!?!??! I gotta google dat shit down~!!!

Yeah, they only release VLS but those cats are bad ass who has worked with some great talent (Fatlip[different song than the new one with Tre and Omni], Wildchild and Raashan Ahmad)

If you dig The Procussions's album, Mr. J Mederios' (the white/hispanic dude from the group) solo album Of Gods And Girls is really good if you happen to dig the song American Fado.

I never listened to the Procussions album. The dudes were friends with some of the hiphop crowd at my school so they were always down to perform at our events so I got to see them live a few times. Not too impressed... also one of the dudes who had connections went on to become the DJ for this other group, Deux Process.

anyway has any1 ever seen this site, Biff's hip-hop???

It's all himself, there's this one song he has w/ Metohd Man called "Hold You Down", it's a great song

I totally forget to mention on my first post, that i was going to a Busta Rhymes concert at my school that night.

Well, that totally kicked ass. I think he might have appeared briefly during the Roc Da Mic tour when i went to that, but a full concert was even better. Even more so i think hes one of the best possible performers you can go watch.

and yeay the new Jazzy Jeff is the Return of the Magnificent. I already downloaded it illegally !_! but havent listened to it yet. I'll prolly go out and buy it instead.

I also DLed the new Bone Thugs album. I havent heard Thug Stories yet either, but Thug World Order was one of the worst things ever~!!

E1999 Eternal is another top 5 album for me, I wanna spend some quality time with the group's post-Bizzy work and see how they been doing

New Bone Thugs album is ok nothing special. Better than there last one but not even close to E1999.

That Marco Polo ft/ Masta Ace song is nice. Only place I know of Marco Polo from is some of the production on Pumpkinhead's last album. Which was quite good by the way. I'll have to be on the look out for the Rawkus album though.

El-P's "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" is my favorite album as of yet this year. Exceeded all of my expectations. The new Sean P and Brother Ali are close behind but I expected more out of both. Beats could have been better on "The Undisputed Truth" and "Jesus Price Supastar" just isn't quite "Monkey Barz." Still...they're both great albums...

Going the see Brother Ali on June 8th here in Minneapolis. Seen him once before and he puts on a great show. Wish there were some better opening acts though...oh well.

Also Kottonmouth Kings, Tech N9ne and (hed)pe in July...should be good shit.
New Bone Thugs album is ok nothing special. Better than there last one but not even close to E1999.
That's the only I actually bothered getting from them... There are some interesting secrets about the cover and booklet in E 1999.

 • This album was released twice. The original version contained the song "Crossroad" (track 8). After the death of Eazy-E, Bone remade the song as "Tha Crossroads (D.J. U-Neek's Mo Thug Remix)" and re-released the album (featuring the new single at track 8). At some retailers the re-release bore a sticker reading "Includes the bomb hit: Tha Crossroads!"
 • There are a few differences in the art on the actual CD between releases. Newer versions of the second release (i.e. the one containing "Tha Crossroads") have a different pattern on the CD bearing the number 9 (or 6) on the CD eight times. There are also several symbols appearing on it resembling characters in the Hindi alphabet.
 • Inside the cover, in white letters on a black field, are the words "Eric Wright RIP 11523". This appears on several other albums, including posthumously released Eazy-E albums. "11523" is the number of days Eazy spent on this Earth (approximately 31 and a half years).
The symbols, in order of appearance, (and excluding the "x" in the beginning) are: B 1 D E M 0 N R 4 1. Each of these letters corresponds to a key on a telephone. The code spells out a phone number, 213-360-6741, which at one time may have greeted callers with a special message.
 • Behind the CD in the jewel case is an image of the group with an overlay of a circular pattern flanked by skeletal hands in the corners. The image is representative of a Ouija board, with the words "Invoke" and "Suppress" found around the circle and one hand possessing a very long index finger extending into a smaller circle, probably representing the planchette (pointer) used in spelling out words on a Ouija board. Written along the left and right folds of this insert (one what is the opposite side of the long, thin edge of the CD where the album name and artist are usually printed) are the following: "Don't Give Props To The Devil" (left) and "Believe in the Last Day" (right). This style of hidden text is repeated on Eazy-E's posthumous album, Str8 Off Tha Muthaphuckin Streets of Compton, which bears the phrases: "Thou shalt not kill" and "You find yourself without morals".

nah, when the single 'Crossroads' was released, they released a version of E1999 which had BOTH versions of the songs (the single was a last bonus track).

I guess that would make the replaced version, the one I own unfortunately, the 3rd version. still those r sum interesting facts.

and jus coz I dont really got anything new to add at the moment, here's sum more music videos:

Louis Logic - The Great Divide

Lost Boyz - me & My Crazy World (I loved this song back in the days~!!)

OC - Far From Yours

I own the second one then I guess. It's a fantastic album though, I havent even bothered checking out anything else by them and dont plan on doing so anytime soon.

so I listened to the new El-P today.

it's too weird man~!!! I mean, it was refreshing definitely, and I can't say that I didn't enjoy it, but I prolly won't be listening to it ever again.

what's interesting was the remaining space on my cdr was filled with the bonus tracks from the latest Styles P album, which was quite an interesting way to balance things out.

but anyway, new El-P isnt even as good as Fantastic Damage, which I loved when it first came out. When I listened to it again a few years later I was like wtf how did I ever like this?!?! lol but FanDam had some great songs like TOJ and Dalorean. Best song from this new album was probably chuuuuuurryyyyyyinnnnngggg~~~~

well, i did get the album of emusic so at least I put a little change in his pocket. Can't say the same for Styles P unfortunately.

Rozz>> I thought Art of War and Resurrection were great followups!!! However, most ppl will disagree becoz E1999 is just so damn good. Art of War has less of a chemistry vibe in the album, it's more like each member rapping seperate verses not really blending well with each other. Resurrection just didnt sell well as the others (it only went 1x platinum, and 2 of the music videos fell into obscurity)

I still suggest u check them out, but for a real recommendation I highly suggest krayzie Bone's first solo, Thug Mentality. It's 2 discs of magnificent krayziness!!!

here's the music video for the title track, along with the 2 rare music videos of resurrection:

Krayzie Bone - Thug mentality

BTNH - Change the World (extended version)

Krayzie's verse in this song is just... beautiful!! I wish he would make an album where he is just singing

eh... the 3rd music video I was gonna post, Can't Give it Up, was removed from youtube... so I'll post my favorite bone song instead!

BTNH - Dayz of our Livez

damn doodz, if this thread falls back a few pages, then DO NOT FORGET ABOUT IT~!! bump this shit like u bump your rap music!

if it werent for this, I woulda never heard of Jazz Liberatorz, Sol.illa, or Deepspace 5. Nor would I be snatching the new Brother Ali this month off emusic.

see?? dat's why I made this thread, lol

So what are some of your favorite old school albums that no one knows about?

Couple of mine

Y'all So Stupid - Van Full Of Pakistans
If you like Black Sheep, this album is a must listen

Da King & I - Contemporary Jeep Music
IMO, the song Tears is one of the best hip hop songs of all-time

Kurious - A Constipated Monkey
I've worn out a few tapes through the years of this and it still doesn't get old. It warmed my heart to hear him on the King Geedorah project.

Another one that I still love though its a bit more known than the other three

Boogiemonsters - Riders Of The Storm: The Underwater Album
This is an absolute classic and it doesn't sound dated at all. Mark of The Beast is still one of the coolest songs of all-time

Although this is meant for hip hop, I have a question about a jazz group.

Does anyone here own or have access to Down to the Bone's album "From Manhattan To Staten"?

Any of their albums would be awesome, but that one in particular b/c of the song 'Staten Island Groove'.

I haven't been able to find any of their albums around here and am not to fond of buying cd's off the internet (i.e. Cracked cases, bootlegs, WAITING for it to arrive, etc..)

Mr Lif - I Phantom
Mr Lif - Jugular Vein
Deltron - Mastermind
Pharcyde - Runnin
Wyclef Jean - Apocalypse
Gangstarr - Above the Clouds
Gravediggaz - Bang Your Head
MF Doom - Hey!
Various Artists - The Points (Bone, Notorious BIG, etc)

I think I'm the only one that actually owns 'Free Us Colored Kids' by the Juvenile Committe, yet it's great. It's from 1992 or 93 and features production by the Bomb Squad (of Public Enemy fame) and Dr. Dre (it's funny, the credits list him as Doctor Dre though)
