Is it really that rare? I know I'd never seen it on shelves before but I figured that it only saw release a few years ago (despite being recorded well over a decade ago) so it can't be that rare, can it?

Wow, have we really not mentioned Ali until now? Good check on that. The whole Rhymesayers collective could be worth a listen if people have been sleeping on that. As for me, you know I copped The Undisputed Truth, especially since it only cost me $9 for the CD/DVD package. I also managed to pick up Ali's first two CDs for $4 apiece at Tower's closing sale.

If you ever get a chance to see him live you owe it to yourself to do it. He rips it. Shows are cheap too. I have caught him twice. Met him both times and he is a cool cat.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned him yet either, like the other poster said. I want to see him in concert but the only time I can is next week or so and I think it's the night before a final, so that's out.

Anywho, anyone else here a Mr. Lif fan? He puts on a fuckin' amazing show and I hope I get to see him next Saturday.
 
You people do need to check out the Sol.illa album if you haven't already. I picked that album up last year when it dropped because I thought that the art looked interesting and I've got to say that it is the most pleasant musical surprise I've stumbled upon since Extended Family back in 2002 or whenever that album dropped.

If you like stuff like Sol.illa though, you guys should check out Level Jumpers. It's some local Detroit stuff (that I somehow stumbled upon out here in Arkansas through the magic of the inter-webs) and the two albums they made (specifically Simply Complx) are both incredible chill, pure hip-hop albums. They've sort of broken up now, but Skrapz (one of the guys in the group) came out with a solo album last year and it's got to be one of the better albums start to finish that I've listened to in a long time.

Anyway, that's all I'm going to say for now, I could rant for days though. Good thread idea I think. Peace.

I have always been a pretty big Pac fan. Lyrically he was one of the greatest.

Sage Francis is the shit, like with Slug I just wish he wasn't called emo. Maybe art fag (since he is more of a poet than anything) but not emo.
 
I remember seeing Sage at the first Rock the Bells... He had about 5 colored wigs on that he used in his performance for "The Strange Famous Mullet Remover" and at one point he brought out a big brown paper bag and started slinging fried chicken drumsticks into the crowd.

You should get Joe Beat's solo stuff. It's really good instrumental hip-hop, at least in my opinion. Also, his Indie Rock Blues album is great.

I cant stand Sage, my friend dragged me to a Sage/Sole concert once... it sucked so bad.... there were so many high school kids in the crowd too.

regarding Brother Ali, one of my problems with music is I have too much Backlog, so I try to listen to music while preoccupied with other things. Like I had an ipod in college, but sold it coz I never used it afterword. Now since my phone is an MP3 player, I carry headphones with me everywhere just in case a convenient time arrives to turn on some Planet Asia or 7L Esoteric shit I got loaded on the mem stick. It's only 1gb on there but that's all I need.

I also burn a crapload of CDs for the car since I spend a lot of time in there.

but umm... o yeah Brother Ali. So I heard his Shadows of the Sun album once, and I cant even remember it!!! so many ppl say about how good he is, but my memory is blank with him! I really like his track on the Molemen record tho.

All of Doom's albums are pretty much hard to find. I believe this ones rare because the cover was banned/controversial, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah, Soul On Ice is one of my personal favorite west coast albums. Rassassination though, was pretty much what you said, his attempt at being commercial. It's sad that he didn't get his big break thanks to the shit with him and Priority. It would've been cool to see how him and Dre could work together. And about Kool G Rap, you need to peep his shit ASAP! In my book, he is the greatest of all time.

Yeah, I've heard some of Vakill's stuff. He's dope, but I'm not too crazy about him. Maybe I just need his stuff to grow on me over time.
 
If I remember correctly, Bl_ck B_st_rds was never released back in '94 when the album was recorded. There was some controversy over the lynched Sambo cover, and the label decided it was easier to shelve it than deal with the media coverage.

However, the album was released in 2001, seemingly without any controversy. Seeing as how that was only 6 years ago, I have a feeling that it's not too rare, though I don't know how limited the release was.

Yeah, they only release VLS but those cats are bad ass who has worked with some great talent (Fatlip[different song than the new one with Tre and Omni], Wildchild and Raashan Ahmad)


If you dig The Procussions's album, Mr. J Mederios' (the white/hispanic dude from the group) solo album Of Gods And Girls is really good if you happen to dig the song American Fado.
 
I never listened to the Procussions album. The dudes were friends with some of the hiphop crowd at my school so they were always down to perform at our events so I got to see them live a few times. Not too impressed... also one of the dudes who had connections went on to become the DJ for this other group, Deux Process.

I totally forget to mention on my first post, that i was going to a Busta Rhymes concert at my school that night.

Well, that totally kicked ass. I think he might have appeared briefly during the Roc Da Mic tour when i went to that, but a full concert was even better. Even more so i think hes one of the best possible performers you can go watch.

New Bone Thugs album is ok nothing special. Better than there last one but not even close to E1999.
 
That Marco Polo ft/ Masta Ace song is nice. Only place I know of Marco Polo from is some of the production on Pumpkinhead's last album. Which was quite good by the way. I'll have to be on the look out for the Rawkus album though.

El-P's "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" is my favorite album as of yet this year. Exceeded all of my expectations. The new Sean P and Brother Ali are close behind but I expected more out of both. Beats could have been better on "The Undisputed Truth" and "Jesus Price Supastar" just isn't quite "Monkey Barz." Still...they're both great albums...

Going the see Brother Ali on June 8th here in Minneapolis. Seen him once before and he puts on a great show. Wish there were some better opening acts though...oh well.

Also Kottonmouth Kings, Tech N9ne and (hed)pe in July...should be good shit.

That's the only I actually bothered getting from them... There are some interesting secrets about the cover and booklet in E 1999.

  • This album was released twice. The original version contained the song "Crossroad" (track 8). After the death of Eazy-E, Bone remade the song as "Tha Crossroads (D.J. U-Neek's Mo Thug Remix)" and re-released the album (featuring the new single at track 8). At some retailers the re-release bore a sticker reading "Includes the bomb hit: Tha Crossroads!"

I own the second one then I guess. It's a fantastic album though, I havent even bothered checking out anything else by them and dont plan on doing so anytime soon.
 
so I listened to the new El-P today.

it's too weird man~!!! I mean, it was refreshing definitely, and I can't say that I didn't enjoy it, but I prolly won't be listening to it ever again.

what's interesting was the remaining space on my cdr was filled with the bonus tracks from the latest Styles P album, which was quite an interesting way to balance things out.

but anyway, new El-P isnt even as good as Fantastic Damage, which I loved when it first came out. When I listened to it again a few years later I was like wtf how did I ever like this?!?! lol but FanDam had some great songs like TOJ and Dalorean. Best song from this new album was probably chuuuuuurryyyyyyinnnnngggg~~~~

well, i did get the album of emusic so at least I put a little change in his pocket. Can't say the same for Styles P unfortunately.

I still suggest u check them out, but for a real recommendation I highly suggest krayzie Bone's first solo, Thug Mentality. It's 2 discs of magnificent krayziness!!!

This is an absolute classic and it doesn't sound dated at all. Mark of The Beast is still one of the coolest songs of all-time
 
Although this is meant for hip hop, I have a question about a jazz group.

Does anyone here own or have access to Down to the Bone's album "From Manhattan To Staten"?

Any of their albums would be awesome, but that one in particular b/c of the song 'Staten Island Groove'.

I haven't been able to find any of their albums around here and am not to fond of buying cd's off the internet (i.e. Cracked cases, bootlegs, WAITING for it to arrive, etc..)

I think I'm the only one that actually owns 'Free Us Colored Kids' by the Juvenile Committe, yet it's great. It's from 1992 or 93 and features production by the Bomb Squad (of Public Enemy fame) and Dr. Dre (it's funny, the credits list him as Doctor Dre though)

Great album but I honestly thought Will Rap For Food was a better album, either way they are still two of the best hip hop albums this century

I think the best CL album is Southernunderground, it's start to finish one of the more solid albums I've ever heard. "Seasons" with Masta Ace is definitely a potential classic I think.
