I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

I don't know if any tried this yet but I got the Samurai 7 Set for 50% off under the anime sale at my local best buy. Took it to the counter, it didn't come up as if it was on sale, dude went back and checked the anime sale section looked at the regular dvd Samurai 7, smiled at me and gave me 50% of the Blu Ray one. I wish they had Akira in stock and I would have gotten that too.

So now I have bought: Fullmetal Alchemist 1 and 2 sets, Trinity Blood, and Samurai 7 (Blu-Ray)

Pretty good sale. Thanks for person who posted it.

Can anyone recommend any good anime for someone who considers Dragonball Z as the best thing ever?

I know about Naruto but don't care much for it.

Saint Seiya. The only downside is that they are no where close to finish releasing the whole series. Even if you dont buy it torrent or youtube as it it really amazing.

all of them have a good amount of fighting, with great stories/characters

If i buy whatever anime i want at a non-sale store, and try to return/rebuy at another best buy, will they be okay with this? Will they get upset/turn me down, or are they okay with it?
 
Yu Yu Hakusho is SOOOO much better than DBZ. Stuff actually happens in an episode besides head thoughts and multiple episode charge ups to only miss. ^_^ I'd like DBZ a lot more if stuff like that wasn't present.

I did the first week this sale was on. I just got a price adjustment in CS center. I remember the girl going wow this is a big difference.

A couple things you could try:
1. Do exactly that and say "if I can't get the price adjusted, I'll just return everything here."
2. Go to a 50% off Best Buy and place a Kiosk order for an in-store pickup at the store you prefer.

I was gonna complain that cheapest shipping w/ that route is $9. (Versus free from BestBuy.com w/ my RZ Silver.) But! The current Bandai 40%+ off sale lets me add the other two Gurren Lagann LE's for a few bucks more than if I wait for the DD 20% off sale to bring it up over $49 for free shipping.

Seriously though, I remember how much BB's per-item shipping sucked when I wasn't RZ Silver and trying to take advantage of anime clearances. After ordering all those items and acumulating $10+ of shipping, you think, "man, that could have been another one or two DVDs!"

I got confirmation that the stuff that doesn't sell is going to be shipped to stores that will still be selling all anime. Quite a shame as id love to do some pricematching to 75%

Either way, i picked up a buncha stuff during this sale and saved a lot of money, so it was great while it lasted. Best Buy, you rule.

Good thing a ton of the older shows I researched last night weren't showing up with a discount at the kiosk. My last order consisted of:

Now to arrange something with my apartment complex about gathering the packages off my front door next week since I'll be away at GDC. looks like Mine :D, besides the first day I pretty much came back every day to see the shelves untouched. It helps that my store is on the yuppie side of town. the South side of town's BB got hit like a ton of bricks.

I tried to find Akira on Blu Ray, but the BB was all out. Should I have looked in the anime section? I figured it would be with the rest of the blu rays.

If only mine had BERSERK....only bought the Ghost in the Shell Innocence dvd for 7.49$....Anyone had an extra Berserk....?
 
The store we drove an hour to get to had crap in stock, maybe two quarter-filled shelves. After a LOT of work, I managed to get Princess Tutu and Ghost Stories ordered off the site for "half off" (I use quotes because I am going to have to wait for the shipment to come, and then go to my local best buy and get the prices adjusted to the 50% point) did anyone else find it a pain in the ass to get Princess tutu at 50% off? Anyway, I also bought Tsubasa season 1, and Ouran high school host club, and the guy who came with my wife and I got Witchblade, and a volume of Devil may cry.
 
Yesterday, I was able to get Bleach seasons 1 and 2 and Kiba Collection 2. Other than that, most of the box sets were cleaned out of the store I went to. The only box sets they had left were Naruto and DBZ. The rest were individual dvds.

Man, Berserk is what I was hoping for today too.

Anyway, I decided to blow more cash today so I went to the Burlington, NC store. Slim pickings there. There were almost NO box sets to speak of, not even Naruto. I was an hour and a half from my house so I was determined to buy something.

Thanks to everyone for all of their help. I wasn't quite done wasting money, so I sent in an instore pickup for Yu Yu Hakusho season 4. Also placed a preorder for an anime called Chrono Crusade. Any good? I guess it has some religious aspect to it or something? It was 21.49, so while on the cheap side, it was 14.99 like some of the other complete collections I got, so if it's not amazing, I may just cancel the preorder.

The anime section got raped badly by the end of the sale for the particular sale store I went to-- I scoped some non-sale stores, and they have a nice selection. Hopefully they wind up getting rid of anime altogether one day and we see another round of 50% off (I wouldn't mind really, it's no big deal to have to order anime online, especially with some great places like Rightstuff.com around)

Chrono Crusade isn't so much new as, I think, a re-release in a slim pack full season setup-it's ok, some people were blown away by it, but I wasn't one of them-it had that mid early 2000 feel (it was made around that time, by that I mean you have a show that has a decent comedic cast, and then throw in some darker past, and wind up with that "compromised" ending between the extremes-as far as the genre go, you have that supernatural setting, think of hellsing or trinity blood kind of world and that'll give you a pretty good feel of what kind of conflicts that'll arise in the series

Yep, I can confirm that at my store the discount signs are down and the kiosk prices are back to full price. Looks like this sale is over...

Total cost (including an accidental $2.05 sales tax on one): $530.78
That more than tripled my collection, likely quadrupled. It's a rough estimate, but I'd wager overall I probably paid an average of $1.50 an episode, less on larger series and more on smaller ones and individual volumes/broken seasons. And I still wish I'd picked up Fate/Stay Night, Yu Yu Hakusho, and some DBZ movies.
 
Thanks to everyone who gave me recommendations. I picked up Saint Seiya Collection & Yu Yu Hakusho season 1.


Now....the kiosks WERE displaying the 50% off prices until about 2 hours ago. I went to 3 Best Buy stores (all within a train ride away, so no gas wasted for me!). 1st store was displaying 50% off prices. 2nd store wasn't part of the sale and I only went there to pick up anime I ordered at a kiosk last night. The 3rd store was showing SOME anime at 50% off while the rest were full price. I brought some things up to be scanned and they were all full price. Finally, I went back to the 1st store to check the kiosks again and everything was full price. :(


Oh well, fun while it lasted. Really wish I got those Full metal Alchemist season sets but I'm sure something will come up in the future.
 
Shigurui: Death Frenzy [2 Discs][Box Uncut] - DVD, why didnt I know about this while the sale was on to preorder this. Darn it.
