I worked out for the first time in 2 years and I feel GREAT (33 lbs. down!)

Wow... I'm so psyched. Back when I was young (in my 20s - I'm 32 now) I used to be a huge gym-rat. I got up every morning at 5:30, went straight to the gym, worked out for 45-50 minutes, did cardio for 40 minutes and then went to work. I was in really good shape. The day my wife went into labor over 2 years ago was the last time I ever went to the gym. I have a treadmill at home I ran on periodically but never with thew consistency that you need. There was just no time anymore between the baby and commuting to NYC. Ever since I quit going I've kind of felt like shit.

About a month ago I transferred jobs to be 20 minutes from home and this morning I finally got back to the gym. I am going to be sore as hell tomorrow and I was barely able to lift 1/2 of what I used to be able to but I feel fantastic. Hopefully I can shed the 30 lbs I gained over the last 2 years - at least by the summer (when baby #2 is due!!). Woo hoo!!!

Congrats!

One glaring omission: no mention of hot chicks? ;)

I've been sick for the last month of so, and finally got over a bad cough. So I'll be returning tomorrow after a 4 week hiatus.

And considering its javeryh, he forgot to talk about bowel movements:D

Well, I was trying not to scope out hot chicks because I'm still in the "embarrassed to be there because I'm so weak and out of shape" stage. I couldn't help noticing a few though. I'll post impressions later on. I actually saw a few people I recognized. When I was in law school I used to go to this gym except it was a Bally's and now it's a NYSC. There was about a year gap between one closing and the other opening though so I'm sure a lot of people just found a new local gym to go to. As for me, I graduated law school and got a joib in the city so I found another place as well up until I stopped going altogether.

As for the bathroom situation - not bad. Individual showers are probably the biggest selling point for me. The lack of a shelf though is disappointing. I need a spot for the shampoo bottle, soap and razor. Believe it or not, I've never taken a shit at any gym in the 12 total years I had been going so I can't really comment on that. Its a NYSC so overall everything is pretty top-notch. Individual TVs at the treadmills and elipticals are great. It was also not crowded at all. No waiting for anything. So far so good but it's only been one day.

It's good to hear you were able to go back. That's my big fear when Im older, that I just wont have time to do it. I've been going consistently now for a year and a half, and even though thats tiny compared to how long you've gone consistently, I love it.

Now what I dont love is how all my friends want to go now (last year no one came with me). They always tell me I have to wait for them to go, so we can go in a group. I dont know about you, but when I want to go to the gym, I want to go then, not when someone else wants me to lift. Another thing I hate about going with friends is they seem to talk to me more then actually working out.

Ah well, thought I'd share a small rant.

I hear its hard to lose that pregnancy weight but good luck and congrats on getting back. Hopefully one day i can find the time to return to lose the 30 pounds i gained from eating horribly and not working out. :)

oh man ive had to cut down cause school kept me so damn busy, but nothing like the feeling of a great workout :)...except when you shit your gym shorts..nothing says accomplishment more than a nice brown undie trout!

one time i was playing soccer and i had to go poo so bad i couldn't help myself and it started streaming down my legs man that sucked.
Story about showers.
Make sure you wear some flip-flops or something in the shower. They make you do that in boot camp because of the fungi you can get on your feet from others, so I'd imagine it can be about the same at a place like a gym. In fact, my brother got in trouble for forgetting to wear his shower shoes in boot camp. Luckily he didn't get teh atheletes feets too :hot:!
Prediction for tomorrow or day after tomorrow:

javeryh> OH F*CKS I HURTEDS :(
I'm already feeling sore - tomorrow morning is going to suck. Three weeks is all it takes to get back in the habit. I hope to lose about 1/2 of the 30 lbs. by then but the other 15 are going to be brutal. I'm kind of a big guy anyway - 2 years ago in the best shape of my life I was really slim (like abs showing and people telling me I needed to gain a few) but still hovering between 195 and 200 - I'm around 225 now and no one really notices that I've gained any weight over the last 2 years except for me because it's true and I feel like shit.

You know you're in trouble when you start getting man bloat face. No one loves a fat skinny guy.

Shit, I need to hit the gym... I got a little fatigued playing Nintendo Wii Tennis the other day.

Oh my God I can't move. This morning was tough because I had zero mobility in my arms - I also didn't sleep well because of it. I can't wait until 2 weeks or so go by and I don't feel sore anymore...

I had the weigh-in and it was very disappointing... 231 which is about 25 lbs. heavier than I've ever been. Plus, the dude that weighed himself before me was FAT and I mean his joe was covering his junk kind of fat and you couldn't see his neck and he was only 224. Granted, I have about 6 inches on him but still depressing as hell. 3-4lbs a month and I'll be in fighting shape in no time.

A great man once said "They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!" and goddammit that's how I feel.

Wow cool deal i just started working out on Thursday of last week. Its been almost two years on the dot that I quit. My brother moved back from California and has been staying with me until he gets set up up here. So we hit the basement gym and finally put it to some good use again.. I have been so damn sore and I also cant wait for that magical two week period when all the pain goes away.

Tonight is a workout night and I fear and relish it at the same time.

God damn. Day 3. My inner thighs are effing chafed and it hurts like hell. Other than that, it was another successful day!

Gold Bond medicated powder is your friend.

Took me two years of basketball camp to figure that out; it's my gift to you.

You freaking rule. I'm on it. My legs are just generally close together - they are like toothpicks (even still with my recent poundage) yet they have always chaffed. Typically I was working out and running regularly so I became immune to it but right now I have some serious fire crotch.

You can put it on after the fact and it will help while you're walking around during the day, but make sure you put it on before you do any more exercising to prevent it from happening again.

I've been working out since February 21st of this year. I was fat all my life, then dropped down to 125 pounds 3 years ago (I'm 5'8") but in the time I've been working out, I have gone from 125 pounds to 158. :)

Optimally, Cardio should be done around 5 to 6 hours before lifting, if you plan on doing both in one day. If you must do both in the same gym trip, I would definitly recommend you do the cardio first and then doing your weights.

When you do cardio, 99% of the energy you use is from fat when your heart is at 65% of its max rate. When you go above that (like sprinting fast), your energy is taken from glycogen storage, which obviously isn't optimal. I recommend using this http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calhr.htm
to find your heartrate.

Now I recommend you doing long duration cardio for 45-60 at your 65% max heartrate. If you dont have that long, you can also do something Called HiiT training, which you can do for about 30 minutes and is more intense. Long duration cardio burns more fat though.

I've been lifting for 45 minutes and then running for 45 minutes this week. If I do it the other way around I find that I am too tired to lift. I've always done it like that.

Just out of curiosity where are your tips coming from? (IE im a trainer, im a phys ed. instructor, i read a magazine once)

afedock is a 100% correct, you'll get results either way... its good that you're doing anything.

But he's right, about the 65%, long duration thing... I dunno about the 5-6 hours before lifting thing. I've always been told that you should at least do cardio for 10-15 mins before lifting to get the blood movin.

When I saw the mention of chafing, my first thought was of nipples, but I guess not. I was gonna recommend putting some ductape over your nipples. I don't exercise, but it still works for me in various situations.

I went to the gym the last two days in a row after not going in a long time. I barely managed to do an hour of cardio today (after lifting), I nearly barfed. I am sore as hell....

My nipples always get chaffed as hell when I exercise, but I can't bring myself to put tape on them. It's just... too... weird. I might break down one of these days and do it; I know it will help, but I'm scared someone would end up catching me with it on.

And Gorilla, that quote in your sig is sooooo true. I think everyone can learn a lesson from it.

I heard that you can get more of a workout if you do your cardio after you lift because your muscles or more tired and you have to push yourself harder to meet your goal.

Today was my first weigh-in (well, my second one since I weighed myself on Monday when I started). I plan to weigh myself every Friday so I don't get depressed doing it daily.

I lost 5 lbs. this week (since Monday)! I'm also not really sore anymore. It went away faster than expected...

Man javery.

That must have been one helluva bowel movement!

Well, I did shit about a yard yesterday. I didn't think it would flush even without TP in the bowl. I think I finally got rid of all the crap building up inside over 2 years of eating like shit and not exercising. I actually felt vacant for the first time in a long time.

I'm going to start going after New Year's. I figure it's going to be too hard now with the get togethers and stuff. Are you guys cutting down/watching what you eat also or do you just use the gym as an incentive to eat what you want while keeping the weight down?

I've decided that, since I started working at UPS and have gotten even skinnier as a result of all the running, I'm going to start doing situps atleast. My projection is that in 2 weeks of doing situps of every night, I will be able to alteast somewhat see a 6 pack. Reason enough for me to start doing them.

Well, the pre-lifting cardio is merely "warming up." It's about as much cardio as an appetizer is a meal.

Congrats on the loss, javery!

Well, I'm a bit disappointed this morning. Today is the end of the second week and I only lost 1 more pound so I'm down to 225 from 231. I had a bit of a rough week though - I had to rush my wife to the hospital at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday night (she's fine for now we think) and I was there until Wednesday afternoon so I missed the gym that day. That threw off my sleeping and eating a little bit but I'm back on track now. Christmas and New Year's weeks are going to cause me to miss both Mondays too. I think I'm in a good routine though heading into the new year and even if I only lose a pound a week I'll still be where I want to be by July 4 weekend which isn't that far away.

Obviously you are going to build muscle to which would be a reason the lower measurable weight loss could be happening. I am into the 4th week after this saturday. Its been a total bitch balancing work, working out, shopping, working on my car etc. Getting out of bed in the morning is challenging sometimes.... The cool thing is I was only sore for about a week or a bit longer before it went away.
Obviously you are going to build muscle to which would be a reason the lower measurable weight loss could be happening.
Not in two weeks he wouldn't be building substantial muscle tissue to offset weight loss. I don't care what stack you're using, if you're cycling on or off testosterone...nothing short of anabolic steroids would help you get that large that quick. Besides, I think javery's routine was cardio-heavy and light on the weights; it's not as if he's going to be building mass muscle tissue by hitting the treadmill.

What's more likely is that you're getting to the "real" weight loss now. That 5lbs/week was a fluke, and probably "the crap being skimmed off the top." The average rate of healthy weight loss is 2/week, according to the US Deparment of Health (I think). Now that you're seeking to lose extra weight that's been with you for a number of years, you're going to find it very difficult.

You're still going in the right direction, b/c you're losing weight. Be happy with that. Remember: any more than 2lbs per week loss is not considered healthy (but it will likely happen, though not more than 3-4). Also, be consistent with the time of day that you're weighing yourself (it gives you a more accurate measurement).

I'm measuring every Friday at 8:30 a.m. I don't want to do it more than that because fluctuations in the week might depress me. I'd be thrilled with a 2lbs. per week rate of loss. That would put me in fighting shape in a mere 13 weeks!

The muscle is definitely going to factor in to the equation - I'm naturally big and I have broad shoulders. My "regular" size when I'm active is a size 46L jacket and a 34-35" waistline. Even if the numbers don't go down I'd be happy with looser fitting clothes but I do have to get to 200lbs. eventually.

Well another Friday and some really good progress. In some miraculous way I ended up losing 6 lbs. this week! I don't really know how it happened because I only worked out 3 times due to Christmas on Monday and the fact that I didn't get home from the in-laws until around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and had to get up for work so I skipped. I did add an extra 10 minutes of cardio to the mix to try and make up for it and I increases all the settings on the eliptical and treadmill so I have to work harder but I still think a 6 pound loss is pretty crazy.

I was also very very good over the holiday - no desserts of any kind and I didn't snack either. I did have one soda for the caffine on my car ride home (4 hours in the middle of the night by myself - I needed to stay awake) plus I didn't have any alcohol which sucked (this weekend is going to be a different story, I think). Anyway, I'm now down to 219lbs. and it's not even 2007. 19 more lbs. by June seems completely doable.

good luck, ive been at golds gym (CA) since i was a senior in high school, (on off a few months) but i love it, a work out gets rid of most if not all of my stress, and after a few days without one i just feel jittery and not good at all... As for the chafing, if it hasnt gone away try getting some of those tight spandex like bicycling shorts that are really smooth, put those under whatever you wear, they work like a charm for me... also are you on any supplements? vitamins? ive found that they help alot if you get the right combination, but that argument could go either way, good luck, and 12 lbs down is great so far!
I didn't have any alcohol which sucked
The past few weeks have enlightened me to the fact that wine is actually worse for weight gain than beer.

:(

Great news on your front! The diet is absolutely crucial, and it's good to see you sticking to your guns.
