There isn't any overworld, the entire game save the first tutorial mission take place inside of a sealed and deserted city called Leá Monde. There are other groups inside the city that you interact with, and there is a decent amount of story that moves the game along. But outside of those story sequences and upgrading your equipment the game is basically pure dungeon crawling.
That totally sounds like my kind of game, going by your description. It's been bumped up a little further on my "to get" list now.

The best character in FF12?
"Penelo" is a funny way of spelling "Larsa"

Seriously, though, I like Penelo as well. I liked all the party/guest characters, save for Vaan, who I absolutely couldn't stand. He's nearly as insufferable in FFTA2 as well.

I enjoyed X up until the big plot twist which I thought was just really stupid and convoluted, wasn't a fan of the romance since Tidus was annoying as all hell, and Yuna was just a dull character.
For me, Tidus was the dull one and Yuna was the annoying one.

I have no beef with FFX-2 Yuna, though. Also, although I love FFX-2 so, so much, agreed with your earlier comment about Lulu's Amazing Invisible Pregnancy. That shit was lazy.

I love X and will always love X until the end of time. I enjoyed X-2, mostly, despite the lazy stuff, but you saw that with XIII-2 and you'll probably see some more of it with Lightning Returns. My biggest problem with X-2 were the characters and how poorly they were done. Outside of the protagonists, I couldn't stand any of the other primary characters, nor their voice actors. But the rad OST and dress sphere system will always be enough for me to play the game again.

I also want to start FFXII since I still have the PS2 collector's edition, but I don't really want to dig my PS2 out, haha.

Final Fantasy IX is dope, have no idea why you guys are bashing it (it's the most polished Final Fantasy game that came out on the PS1), I just want some damn Vita physical releases for the Final Fantasy X HD Collection and my copy of Vagrant Story shipped today, so maybe I'll be able to beat it before Ys arrives at my house!

Because the whole game plays at the speed of a scratched disk? And maybe because Zidane's Sesame Street morals aren't exactly profound? And not to forget the battle system that pretty much makes you immune to danger?

"Oh this boss casts Confuse on my party members? Better switch on "Immune to confuse" in my ability bank. Hurrrr."

It's not like the game is suppose to be hard or anything

If we're going to say things about FFIX's battle system and not say anything about X's, then let's just bash on Pokemon's and call it a day.

Well, if you're comfortable in cross comparing IX's system with a non-ATB 6 party member swap system and a monster collecting game, by all means. Unless your point is that they're all the same because they're simple? Throw in Mass Effect and Skyrim in there while you're at it, then.

Sure, why not. I mean, when I feel like playing a Final Fantasy game, but I don't feel like doing anything, I normally go play FFIX
Fair enough.

It's a really awesome game I totally recommend it, especially if it sounds like something you'd enjoy. It always kind of suprises me how not as many people as I'd expect have played Vagrant Story, but I guess it did come out right at the end of the PS1 era.

Haha, Larsa is a very solid character.

My favorite part about Penelo is that I imagined her reason for coming along is to make sure that nobody steals Vaan away and he doesn't try to go after someone else (which I swear he tries to do with Ashe at one point), haha. Also, the only reason I ended up starting that game again (well technically the Zodiac Job System version) was because my roommate was playing it and was using Vaan who ended up being one of his strongest characters, but who my roommate agrees is a terrible character, and Penelo was a character he basically never even used. So I told him I was going to play the game and make Penelo the strongest character, and Vaan was never going to see combat unless forced.

Also, with regards to non playable characters. Gabranth... :hot:

I enjoyed part of the game, but the final 1/3 of the story is basically terrible culminating in a final boss battle that makes no sense, and which seems like it wants to rip directly from FFIV except IV actually setup who the final boss was.

I didn't say 'yo'.

Completely throws my original sentence out of context.

I put words in your mouth, I apologize.

Only reason Vaan and Penelo feel unnatural is that they create a bloated roster. They're the only 2 that wouldn't classify as combatants in a roleplaying sense, and I could see that as argument for their removal. It already feels dumb having invisible characters with you as you can only have 3 on the field. Other FFs would split your party up, or in the case of X, implement a way to swap them in battle. But in XII you kind of just have useless characters that exist in your menu screen, and that's something I never liked about the game.

What are you talking about you totally set someone up to be a buff bot that you can just hot swap in, haha (Vaan did some of that, and out of combat healing). Or at least in the Zodiac Job System you do since only certain classes learn buff spells. Not to mention you have the emergency, people are dead, swap someone in to do some reviving, haha.

Yeah but having to exchange members in and out of existence from the menu simply for buffs is obnoxious. Mass buffing in general isn't really worth it until late game where you have buff duration fully upgraded and fat MP pools. Switching members during boss battles is viable provided you dedicated your whole game to keeping everyone leveled evenly, and also have them equipped with up to date gear (it's already a financial challenge to keep your core 3 decked out).

That's just how I play XII. I play 3 characters and I think it's just more efficient and enjoyable that way. Not that I don't want to use more, it's just I'm not encouraged to.

It's absolutely true. I had Vaan, Fran, and Balthier over-leveled and couldn't even remember the names of the other 3 characters.

Square Enix clearly stole this promo idea from Xenoblade Chronicles

I like a lot of what's going on in here. While FFIX certainly had it's fair share of shit wrong with it, it remains one of my favorites.

Also, I can't say I've ever been able to take a Final Fantasy main character seriously. Save for my awkward pre-highschool/throughout years where I thought characters like Cloud and Squall were legitimately well-written. Things were easier then.

Either Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy X still remind my favorite Final Fantasy games. I played them a lot growing up and I love each game for different reasons, but I still can never decide which one I like better

I'm glad they REMIND you of your favorites cuz the only acceptable answers are IV or VI.

Crystal Chronicles, guys. Guys?

Is it safe to assume everyone's playing Vagrant Story right now?
It's tempting. It really is. But the lack of an overworld kinda kills it for me. Sometimes it's nice to just wander and explore!

Crystal Chronicles was really fun when you played with 4 people.

Too bad you needed 4 GBAs and 4 of those adapters.

That's fair enough. I guess it boils down to how you quantify exploration in your games. If it's wandering, searching for collectibles and talking to NPCs and the like, I can see why Vagrant Story wouldn't be up your alley. The game instead delivers most of the history of Leá Monde through Leá Monde itself. The names of the rooms, the scenery, the bestiary all play into the big picture. Very much a spoken-without-words kind of affair.

Played it here with two (my husband and I). It was fun, but we gave up after a few attempts at the final boss :whistle2:|

Not the first FF we played together and never beat-- that would be FFXII (we alternated turns at the controller), which we simply got bored of.

I would totally be down for playing Vagrant Story. I've had it downloaded on my Vita for a while now but only ever got to play the first 30 minutes.

So the Persona announcement site now has three Teddies. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!

For the first time, that game actually looks kind of awesome, crotcher. Which one was it?
That was from a Project Eternity presentation at GDC. Unfortunately, while we can see the slides, the presentation itself is behind a ($500-a-year) paywall. Still, it's confirmation that giant feathered hats are in the game.

Obsidian's supposed to have a Big Damn Update next week, so we may soon have actual gameplay footage that goes beyond "this is what water and light look like in our game".

I'm probably going to start playing Vagrant Story tomorrow night (or whenever I get my copy of it) and I swear to god if we are just getting a NA release of P4:A2, you can count me out

It's got Yukari though. YUKARI.
But it needs Koromaru. And Shinji.

Speaking of Atlus, they announced that Conception II will be released in North America - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-11-19/atlus-usa-to-release-conception-ii-ps-vita/3ds-game-in-n-america

When I followed the news about the first game on Andriasang, it sounded both nifty and creepy. The sequel looks a little bit less of the latter, but I guess we'll see?
Still seems pretty creepy. :/

Me and a friend played it back when it first came out, but I didn't think it was really all that fun with just two people, because someone had to be the chalice carrier and then put that thing down when it was time to fight, which I guess would have still been the case with more people, but it didn't feel like all the interesting of a job with just two people. I always felt if I had played it with four people it might have been more enjoyable, if not just for the fact that the carrying job could have been passed around more.

They know what the fans want. :bouncy:
