The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Thanks for everything you have done here.
I haven't really lived up to my promise, but you're welcome. It's a tired song, but I haven't been able to find nearly as much time as I'd like to have worked on this. I've been nipping at it little by little, but I hope to soon be able to devote a whole day to just getting the new catalogue done.

Saw an auction on eBay end for like $22 for a new copy... figure if you're patient, you could get one for less than the import price on eBay.

fuck me... didn't know this. And PA doesn't cancel pre-orders, do they? Well, there goes $50 down the drain.:whistle2:x
Just have them change it to an item you want on PA

Page says you can't cancel and I've heard enough stories about PA's CS that I'm not too hopeful- but I asked them.
Once bought, this item cannot be cancelled or returned.
I have contacted them more than once in the past asking them to either cancel my prorder or change it to order another item. Doesn't seem to be an issue with their CS, it just takes them a little time for them to respond given the time difference. I usually get a response within 24 hours

Alright, that's good to know. Not sure what I'd change it to but at least it's not $50 or something that I can get from Amazon, don't care about the playing cards really.

Not sure if it's appropriate to post this but is there any video games released only in Mexico that I should look out for? Here's a list I have so far.

El Chavo Wii
El Chavo kart racing PS3 and 360
Epic Mickey 2 Vita (got this already)

I had to opt for the EU version of Epic Mickey 2, as those Mexico versions with the US ratings are just to damn high. But I will keep an eye out for a good deal, but I just don't think that is to likely to ever happen(but no harm in trying).

For PS3 there is an NTSC version of Saint Seiya Soldiers called "Los Caballeros: Alma de Soldados" that is extremely hard to find.

Yeah, it was crazy how I found it. I went to an electronic store just to window shop while I was waiting for my Dad and out of nowhere, it was on the display case. The weird thing is that they only sell bootleg games so my guess is that the owner of the store bought a Vita and didn't want the game it came with. It came down to less than $200 pesos which is around $11USD.

Shit I think I saw the PS3 version for $700 pesos earlier. It looks like there's a PS4 version as well.
I should clarify, it's hard to find in the states. I bought mine for $50 on eBay, but there was a hole punched in the UPC, which practically makes the game unplayable :shame:

The fact you didn't pick it up isn't too bad really. Only a difference of 12 bucks or so.

Bought Shadow Warrior 2 Collector's Edition for PS4 yesterday since they're supposed to be shipping soon. Between the numbered copies of SW1 & 2, the steam codes for both games & the cool physical bonus, hand painted Kanji of Empowerment, I couldn't resist.

Damn, that was a super sweet deal. I keep saying I need to go to more garage sales and second hand shops and look for some good "barn finds", but I'm to damn lazy. LOL

I think I saw your post on Reddit, I got a good chuckle out of the guy saying "Love you...". I swear I see that same guy pestering people to sell him stuff/buy his stuff everywhere.

Anyhow, back on topic, I think those are the only ESRB-rated Mexico exclusives. Regional availability is a thing as well, though, so keep in mind that things like Odin Sphere which have become rare in the States may still be common over there. If you care at all about amiibo, I've seen a disproportionate number of posts saying the amiibo stock down there is good, so the Zelda amiibo line would be something to keep an eye out for. Some EU/PEGI-only titles (i.e. Tadeo Jones, Space Hulk) may be more readily available as well.

Go get NTSC, ESRB rated Heavy rain beyond two souls for PS4.

Lol yeah, that was me. I lol'd at the guy saying love you like we're related. My brother found a wind waker 2 pack for like $30USD yesterday while he was shopping with our aunt. I jokingly told him that we should buy a luggage and bring back some amiibos. Long story short, he's looking to ship some back to the states via DHL.

WTF, that got a physical NA release? I had to import mine.

Worth mentioning PA #7 is Ghost Blade... which we announced last week for Limited Run...

We're probably canceling our release or at the very least seriously rethinking our approach to it. Both eastasiasoft and us were not aware of each other's involvement.

Mini update. It seems to be on Walmarts site for $1,000 pesos, which as of right now, it's $54.80USD. It looks like I'll be passing through 5 different Walmarts on my trip throughout the week. If I end up getting multiple copies, would $70 shipped sounds fair?

Lol true. Not gonna lie, I wanna buy an extra copy and throw it on eBay and see how much it'll sell for.
Searching through sold listings, the only ESRB copy I found sold for ~$35 USD via auction. I don't think many people know it exists or to look out for it.

I'd be happy to trade you something worth $70 in value.

Whoa whoa, slow down a minute, lol. Can we go back to the Ghost Blade discussion? I thought that was confirmed as an LRG release, now I see PlayAsia is releasing it? Doomstink, are you guys going to cancel your plans? I want this game, but would prefer the US/LRG release if we are getting both. I guess I'll sign up for the PlayAsia pre-order for now...

Sound fair to me.

I'd buy a copy for $70. Had no idea this got an NTSC release...

Wow. That's some serious miscommunication. PlayAsia it is, I guess....
It's possible we're still going to do it, but our original plans were to launch a standard edition (4.000 copies) on July 28th at $24.99. That's just not feasible when a more robust release is coming out two weeks earlier at only $5 more.

I've proposed to the devs a push to November/December, with a decreased print run, $29.99 price, and premium contents matching the PA release at bare minimum. I don't want to play second fiddle to Play-Asia so we won't release anything less than what they've got.

That's a good approach. Being a shmup, this is likely to sell out fairly quickly, like Soldner did for LRG. And since your version will be the official North America version, it's likely that collectors of that region would prefer the LRG release. I'd probably get both.

I'd be willing to buy one if you get some
