Iron Man - Movie Thread

Hiring a recovering alcoholic to play a recovering alcoholic, Brilliant!
I really do think this a good call, I hope it pans out well

Iron Man does not seem that great to me. Never cared for his comics when I was a kid. Some rich dude that puts on metal suit to fight evil. BLAK!

I think this is a great casting move. Downey knows about personal demons, and he's a terrific actor when you give him a great part. It's a shame that he's mostly identified with the cheesy parts he played in the 80s.

so iron man to marvel is what batman to dc? rich dude fighting crimes...

best casting move since they picked Patrick Stewart to play Xavier

RDJr. will knock this OUT

his acting skillz are far above 98% of people cast in Marvel films so far

and with J.F. directing, plus the rich backstory of Tony Stark - we're looking at a strong potential for the greatest superhero film of all time

or...

it could suck

regardless, Downey can handle any role thrown to him
I'm going to say this one last time and then I'll be done with it:

TOM SELLECK AS TONY STARK/IRON MAN!
way way WAY too old
Expecting something more like this?

Nah.

I like 2Fast's idea though. Tom Selleck would be cool despite his age.

I'm more concerned with the screenplay and director, but Robert Downey Jr. is one helluva actor.
Are people forgetting about Christian Bale- another great casting choice?
Well, the Batman casting department didn't...
way way WAY too old
Why does everyone have to be so young? Tony Stark isn't all that young when he becomes Iron Man IIRC.

Tom is 61 years old

Stark's father or uncle maybe... but that's it

Well, if Selleck was still in his 40s, he'd be great. Unfortunately, he's 61 years old.

I still love Selleck in Mr. Baseball:

Jack: I'm a World Series MVP!

Skip: That was four years ago, Jack. Last season, you hit .235.

Jack: LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
I didn't realize he was 61. Damn, Magnum PI as Stark would have been cool though.
i've been meaning to pick up Magnum PI on DVD

that show pwnt my face

they should bring it back on Spike TV.. cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and call it "Magnum 2.0"
I didn't realize he was 61. Damn, Magnum PI as Stark would have been cool though.
Yeah, Selleck is one of the best mustachioed actors around. Him and Sam Elliott.

Sam Elliott could say anything and make it sound cool, even something like:

"I just got off the toilet after about 3 spicy burritos. Nearly had flames shootin' out my butthole."

sometimes you eat the bear.... and sometimes... well...

he eats you

Not a big Iron Man fan, but this sounds like great news. Those of you suggesting Tom Selleck are on crack. The only thing iron there would be his walker.

He'd be great for Iron Man Beyond though. It worked for Batman.

Tom Selleck looks like Tony Stark but he's too old. I like your thinking though...
After she calls him Leo, Stark says, "Absolutely rediculous...." and then what?
"I don't paint" I believe

Well... somehow I missed the fact that Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, which is mind-blowing, in a bad way. Looks interesting beyond that.

I like how the suit he makes while he's imprisoned is sort of a prototype. Is that in line with the comics? I don't know much about Iron Man lore.

My interest is piqued thus far.

oh my fucking god!

I guess RDjr got his act cleaned up.

If the effects are this good, they should really push it up to Feb 2008...but I guess they want something to help kick off the summer of 2008.

Yeah, Tony makes a suit that's very much like that at first in the comics. Tony's made so many suits though that it gets ridiculous trying to go through them all. Here's the suit Iron Man debuted in:

Are you crazy? Superhero movies should never be pushed up to February in my opinion. This may entirely be based on chance, but not a single GOOD superhero movie has every premiered in Jan/Feb. Look at the stuff that's come out then: Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider...All mediocre at best. Look at some of the ones that premiered in May or June: X-Men, X2, Batman Begins, Spider-Man. I don't know, but it just seems like only the shitty ones come out early in the year.

Another Ghost Rider?

I think a lot of people in CAG thought Ghost Rider would be good.

Early Rotten Tomatoe rating for Iron Man 37%.

I said it before I'll say it again.
The guys who directed Batman Begins and the Spider-Man movies should be the only ones allowed to make Marvel/DC movies.

The top Superhero film has to be Batman Begins.

Considering the movie doesn't open for NINE MONTHS, I'd say "early" is a bit of an understatement. Who's reviewing a movie that's still in production?
The top Superhero film has to be Batman Begins.
No, it really doesn't.

EDIT: Have any comic nerds been following the casting? I just went to IMDB -- Terrence Howard as Rhodey? Sam Jackson as NICK FURY? If that's true, that's brilliant.
