Hello, I am a Chicago guy so I would like to start a Chicago thread so maybe we can help each other out by letting Chicago area cheapasses find cheap deals.

GO WHITE SOX AND CUBBIES! Maybe next year!
Ok, we should start planning for the next meetup. I enjoy going to galloping ghost but I don't feel we communicate that much together or do trades/selling items as a group. My first meetup was at bakers square even though there were only five CAGs meeting up that day we chatted for hours and did alot of trades.

I suggest maybe having a BBQ at a park this year and just chill as a group with verbal interaction, play some portable games, trade games and maybe play some softball.
Set it up! I'm down for going to a laid back place where we can just relax, trade, and tell stories of our great CAG conquests. I know some of you had to get lucky with all the BB DOTD's and are sitting on tons of crap to trade off. The BBQ thing is cool too, if you want to wait 6 months. I'd like to do more frequent meet-ups personally, like every 2-3 months. Just post it here and I'm there.
I always say I'd like to go but I chicken out. Maybe a 2012 resolution for me to join a meetup?
Why haven't you gone to a meetup?

I fine meeting every 2-3 months. Any ideas on where to meet up?

I think I mentioned this the last time, but Evanston has several parks which include beaches. There is also free parking available.

Is there any fees to do a BBQ on the park premise?
What suburb you stay at? In the meetups we have had people from suburbs join. So if your interested on joining us on any meetup don't be shy.
Between Aurora and Wheaton. I plan on moving again soon, but it will be somewhere in that vicinity.

Maybe we can shoot for a summer meet up BBQ in the Northern Burbs and have a winter/spring meetup closer to/in the city (maybe at a bar).

That way we can have an all ages type of thing closer to the burbs for some of the CAGs who haven't been to a meet up before.

I think most all of the regulars are over 21, (except maybe one of us) and I think someone brought up a bar/lounge setting before.

Just throwing some ideas out...I'm fine with pretty much any location. (It allows me to check out a new area) :)

I'm all for a bar, cause I'm drunk a lot, but at the same time, it's not really ideal for a video game trade/discussion area. There's noise, and, well, drunk people. Decent spots for trade meets would be some laid back lesser crowded restaurants, someones house, or the galloping ghost(early in the day it's slow and empty-ish). If you want to meet to have a few drinks, hit me up anytime in the Wrigleyville area, however.

Hey just curious what are your guys' favorite retro video game stores in Chicago? The only ones I know that sell retro games are People Play Games and The Exchange. Anymore I should know about? Thanks :D

Also Any of you Chicago CAG's going to UFC on Fox 2 January 28th at the United Center? I'm going and can't wait!!

Since it's the nearest by my and since they have a good retro selection, Videogames Etc on Harlem and montrose. No on the UFC.

Section 315. This is my first UFC fight as well so I am pretty excited as well.

I've been a CAG'er for a few years and just tripped across this thread!

Grew up in Arlington Heights, lived in Lakeview for a few years/worked in the loop, and now I bought a house out in Carol Stream...I'm down for a meetup as well, I'm sure most of us aren't serial killers or bite...haha

I'm from Aurora but my gf is from Chicago. She's not too much of a gamer but its cool cause she supports my gaming craziness. She's actually taken part in getting some of the deals for me so shed probably come with me to a meetup.

Just let me know when. I have to take off work because I normally am only off tues and weds.

Hey guys,
I'm sure people are familiar with it here, but I was looking for info on People Play Games in the city. I've heard big things about it, but I'm wondering of it would be worth a trip to the city. Is it truly a place to get some rare stuff at a good price, or is it just another game place that gets away with bad prices? I live in Oswego, so I'm wondering if the drive would be worth it.

Eh People Play Games is ok, I used to go in there a bunch when I lived in Lakeview and it was right around the corner from my apartment...it's got a TON of classics (most of them are rip-off priced), but the worst part is that most of my friends that have gone in there since have been treated very rudely when they asked questions or what not.

One of the last times I was down there, I asked to take their last business card on the counter to give to a hard-core classic game friend of mine and the guy huffed and puffed and gave me sh*t about it...I was like "shouldn't you be begging me to take a 5 cent piece of paper that could net you some new business and not act like I'm stealing your only child?"

To answer your question...if you happen to be down on the north side of the city with some extra time to blow, check it out...but I wouldn't drive the 40 miles just to potentially be disappointed by the high prices...

Last thing I picked up from there was Basewars for NES and it was like $7.99 or something plus tax...which if I went to Amazon, it would've been $2.99 plus $2.99 shipping.

I didn't want to be the first one to comment because I've only been there once a few years ago, but I had a similar impression. The wow-factor is high with all the old games you never thought you'd see again, but the atmosphere feels like they successfully transplanted the snooty hip record store vibe. I went in looking for some Dreamcast cables and left with a strategy guide, I think, but I wanted to buy a bunch of older PC games they had in the original chunky-ass boxes.

OHHH, I've been to that place. It was years ago. They had a lot of decent stuff, but it is pretty much overpriced/about right for internet pricing. The only advantage is you can inspect the item in your hands.

Yeah they were kinda hipster dicks when I was there. The music store description is appropriate.

I wanted to like the place so bad because I could walk there in five minutes and find almost anything classic I'd ever want to play (if I was willing to pay for it), but with the guys attitude, it kinda sunk it for me.

It's probably not easy to afford a store front in that area without charging an a** load since I bet they could count on two hands the amount of transactions they got in a day.

OK, here is a possibility for our next meetup:

Gameworks Schaumburg Meetup either Jan, Feb, or March

I have a link below that gives each person 2 hours playtime at Game Works.

There are 3 coupons per person. One for Jan, Feb, and March.

It will probably cost $2 to get the card (if you don't already have one) once we get there.

http://hunt4freebies.com/free-2-hour-video-game-play-at-gameworks/

What do you guys think? There is usually plenty of room at GW to sit in the non gaming areas where we could make some trades.

The parks don't have any fees for a BBQ in Evanston, it appears to be first come first serve. I'm not too far from the beach so I'd probably just bring my portable Weber gas grill. This is the location: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=Dawes+Park&cid=2809099313806911762

You get a great view of the lake, but the beach itself (if you have the need for sand) is $8 to get in (I usually have a few resident passes), but the park and the parking is free.

It's probably been a good 7-8 years since I've been to GameWorks. I enjoy the place, and would go for sure, just give the date. I stopped going mainly because I always had leftover points on the card that never let me get another game in. For example, I'd have like 3 points left on a card and all the games needed something like 4 or more to play. Don't remember exactly, but something like that. It always left me feeling short changed. Well, this and Galloping Ghosts game selection made me not go there at all for the games. But, it's a good place to have a few drinks and just have a good time. Sounds like it would be a fun meet.

BTW, that link says to sign up for the free rewards membership first. Then it says you can get the card to play the games free with membership. So, you guys might want to at least take advantage of that whether going to a meet or not.
I live like 10 minutes from that gameworks. How does all the trading work? Do u guys just bring all the games you want to trade?
games, guides, whatever. Some of us set up trades ahead of time, so we don't have to lug a lot of stuff, others know they want to get rid of stuff and trade/sell everything. It's pretty casual.

I love that Gameworks. I know every Thursday they have all you can play games from 5pm - Close (which is 1 am) for only $10. Maybe everybody can stop by after work for a little bit.

Also I personally love People Play Games. Probably one of the best retro video game stores I've been to. Some of their prices are outrageous, but some are pretty good. If your looking for pretty common games for retro systems I think there prices are fair. I've bought tons of stuff from them and have never had a problem with any of the employees or the managers. They have always been kind and generous every time I've been there.

People Play Games is a huge disappointment. Yeah, it's great to see all of these old games again, but they are marked up heavily and the staff is less than hospitable (as others have stated). Don't waste your time driving in.

I hear there are some great shops in the burbs, but I don't have a car to drive out that way.

Which shops in the burbs are you referring to?
So after seeing this: http://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/ok646/6_kids_just_had_the_balls_to_post_a_video_of_them/ I am fuming, and feel ashamed to call myself a Chicagoan. Just what we needed on MLK day too, a wonderful hate crime...
I saw this on the news and it got me so pissed off also. I hope all assholes go to jail and get what's coming to them up there ass.

Slowdive, I will be down for a meetup at gameworks on a weekend on February or March.
Which shops in the burbs are you referring to?
I couldn't remember any names, so I did some digging. I think "Videogames Then & Now" in Norridge was the main one I was thinking of. Anyone been there?

Been ages, so I have no useful commentary.

re: the beating, that shit happens so often, it's just the media attention this time making it notable; the guy didn't have any life-threatening injuries. When that kid got stomped to death near school last year was worse.
I couldn't remember any names, so I did some digging. I think "Videogames Then & Now" in Norridge was the main one I was thinking of. Anyone been there?
Decent place, but some of the prices are whack and NOTHING is organized so it can be hard to find a specific game. After being there for years they still don't have a computer inventory system up and everything organized properly. Nice to look around the shop though.

Videogames in Norridge is MILES better than People Play Games and it's a closer drive for the suburbanites...sure nothing is organized and there are always 100 kids playing LAN party games on the back computers, but they always have more rare stuff and it's usually better priced.

Has anyone ever been to Game Pazzo (http://gamepazzo.com/) in Downers Grove? I've always wanted to go check it out since it was on TV a bunch right after it opened, but never have made it out...

^ No idea, but it wouldn't surprise me; every time I went into one, I was unimpressed with the selection, service, and prices.

Snow today stretched my commute from 40 minutes to 3 hours. I had to pee.
Hey Chicago CAGS,
I heard a rumor that Play N Trade was going out of business. Any truth to it?
I hope not!
There's only one remotely close to me (about 30 mins away, in Bloomingdale) and I've found a handful of great games there over the last few years.
Plus the people running that specific shop are always really friendly and helpful so I'd hate to see them lose their business.

I'm actually heading down that way today (to use a K-Mart coupon that's about to expire, haha) so I'll probably pop in P&T too.

Bad news, man. The Bloomingdale one's gone. That's why I'm wondering if it's true.
Bad news, man. The Bloomingdale one's gone. That's why I'm wondering if it's true.
Yep. I unfortunately found this out yesterday when I drove down that way.

My old boss and buddy that I play Fantasy Football with ran the Bloomingdale store and he called me one day when I was supposed to swing by and pick up our league dues to tell me that his owner just up and out closed the store without any notice....

I guess the guy owed the plaza and PNT thousands of dollars that he didn't want to pay out of his main business, so he just closed it.

I feel bad for my buddy, but I guess the franchisee was a d-bag and he even kept my shrink wrapping machine that I loaned the store for the holidays...so I'm not a fan of him either

^^^I think you have to be a d-bag to franchise a play n trade. I would always see the owner at TRU whenever there was a deal and he would literally spend $10,000+ when he came in. He would then take everything to his store and slap on a price $5 above MSRP on everything. I asked the kid working there how much he spent and he responded over $17,000 today. I asked, "Do you guys even have $17,000 in merchandise in the gaming section?"

Long story short, that play n trade is closed now.

It's kind of a shame, too. I always used to buy parts and stuff from the Naperville one, but their selection and price has turned sour, plus Slowdive, I think you're right. The Naperville owner's out-of-touch, too.

Yea, that is just straight up shady. Unfortunately it happens across America.
