It was bound to happen: GameStop not able to fill all PS3 pre-orders

Something's not adding up. How are there 400k units out there? No no is getting more than 20 and there have been limited to no online pre-orders!

This is the sad part:

"For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system."

big whoopdie doo. free used game 19.99 or less....when most of there good shit is over 19.99 :whistle2:(

I heard rumar that the shipment is 200K now.

Maybe this is a blessing that will lead to eBay and Paypal's collective destruction.

I haven't been this shocked since Tomonobu Itagaki was hit with a harrassment suit.

Not all that shocking. The PS3 doesn't even exist in my eyes until sometime in 2007. I'm leaning wii360 this gen.

Or is this the first news of an even further reduction in units available? I am thinking that is a more likely issue.

Damn you Strell!!!

Yikes

I am a little surprised simply because places that took pre-orders kept it to single digits...even that can't be fufilled. I wonder if TRU (who I believe did around 6-7 pre-orders), will suffer the same fate.

darn, 5th in line out of 16 (well 18 including the 2 employee preorders). i hope i didn't camp out so i can get a free dvd...
I'm shocked. I wouldn't expect such a thing from an establishment as illustrious and reputable as Gamestop.
 It's not really their fault though, it's Sony's. But the real kick in the ass from GS is the free used DVD/game. fuck that. At least I'm damn near certain that this is not going to happen with my Wii, and even if it did, I'm pretty sure I'm safe.

EDIT: I figured this would happen though. Anyone remember how they were going to do online bundles? That never happened, and I'm betting it's because of lowered numbers by Sony. I'm thinking the 200k launch rumor is more and more viable now.

probably doing those folks a favor and saving them from the first batch of hardware that has the most problems. Plus honestly what game are you going to play? There is nothing promising in their launch lineup
big whoopdie doo. free used game 19.99 or less....when most of there good shit is over 19.99 :whistle2:(
They could have said "tough fucking shit; just wait like everyone else."

It seems like GS is handling this well, IMO. We'll see how this translates to Friday.

Now my task is to find out what number I am in preorders. I won't be able to get to GS until Friday afternoon (doctoral exam! fuckin a!); if I can find out ahead of time that I won't be getting one on Friday, that will save me some time as I can leave my test to go straight to the bar for a few pints, then the theatre for Casino Royale.

I like to plan ahead, y'know.

EDIT: Now, of course, the true humor comes in the form of all those shitknockers who sold their preorders early and guaranteed a refund if it wasn't able to be shipped out on 11/17!

EDIT2: GS tells me they're getting all 16 in. Guess I've got to go get it before I start drinking on Friday. Not that I don't appreciate getting a PS3 so much that I won't play it on day 1, but:
1) you can do one of two things after comprehensive exams: drink or drool while starting out of the morass that was once your brain. I prefer a bitter, personally
2) Casino fucking Royale!

I agree with Myke, the free game/DVD is much better than nothing for those unfortunate enough not to be getting their PS3.

Hell, Gamestop even gave me $5 cash back when the Gears of War shipment was late a day since I had it pre-ordered. I think it's good a company tries to compensate somewhat for late arrivals/smaller shipments even if it's not entirely their fault.

if i'm reading this correctly, you don't get your free game until you actually buy a ps3?

Well, I'm still hoping I get one. I was #3 in line at my GS. Maybe I'll give them a call tomorrow to see if they've heard anything. I can't remember how many preorders they took but it wasn't many.

I wonder if GS, TRU and any other presale outlet could get together and somehow punish Sony in some way. GS was ULTRA conservative this time in accepting preorders so much so that I wouldn't be surprised if they were working directlly with Sony in figuring out haow many consoles to allocate per store.
if i'm reading this correctly, you don't get your free game until you actually buy a ps3?
Exactly. GS is not doing you ANY favors by giving you the free game.
Exactly. GS is not doing you ANY favors by giving you the free game.
Uh, these are for PS3 pre-orders. If you don't buy the PS3, why are you entitled to a free game?

Some of you people need to get over yourselves. GameStop was incredibly conservative during PS3 pre-orders, they got burned by Sony, which isn't their fault, and they are trying to make it up to some people by giving them a free game. The value of the game is meaningless.
I may have been last, but I was the only one to order a 20GB, so I'm pretty sure i'm still getting mine.
That's my situation too, last to order out of 8, BUT the only 20GB. I'm going out right now to check.

I just called and they said that they will PROBABLY be getting enough in for the pre-orders because there were only a "handful" of us and I should be receiving a call in a day or two.

I think I'm 6th in line, I really hope I get mine.

Maybe Gamestop should have just not even fucked around with pre-orders to begin with.... they should have seen this coming whether they worked directly with Sony or not. I wonder how many times they have to get burned on console pre-ordering before they just don't do it?

Regardless, in many people's eyes, it will be EB / GS who get the bad rap again, and not Sony.

First EB / GS dosen't get Gears of War in on time, and now this... they are taking some big hits to their credibility lately.

Well I stopped into my Gamestop today (before this hit) with the intention of prepaying the rest off. Asked whether it would guarantee me getting one, and was told my 100 dollars was what guaranteed it. But it's hardware, I say. Doesn't matter. You're guaranteed. Don't need the additional money now.

Anyways, the day of the preorder, we asked the manager which they were getting: 8 or 16? He smiled slyly and answered what makes you think were not getting more? And he also said they were doing a midnight launch.

Today: After my 500 hundred dollars was rebuffed, I asked whether it's gonna be midnight launch or Friday morning. Employee replied they didn't know yet, but since they were only receiving 6 units, he doubted it would be midnight.

Glad I was second in line.

From what I understand:

- Most stores were cut 33 to 50% in number of units
- Employees cannot pick up their PS3. If they do, they will be terminated
- Rumor is 200k now for launch
- Rumor that Target #s were also cut

apparently there was some article on the tribune talking about a mob hit to a ps3 shipment, and how it played a role in the current reduction, but it's not there any more.

Next system launch needs to be much more organized. I think the "quickly try to churn out a couple hundred thousand by reducing quality control" method is wayyyyy off. they need to start manufacturing earlier and keep their mouths shut about it so they don't get people (and rival companies) hyped.

I'm sure a lot of GS employees will be terminated.... Seriously, who the fuck wants to stay around for a shitty minimum wage job with crappy benefits (15% off discount has been lowered from 40% over the years)? Also, they'd be getting out right before the holidays. Sounds like a damn good deal to me.

I doubt Wiiorders will be cut in half. There are a LOT MORE to go around and Nintendo seems a lot more organized than Sony when it comes to production, numbers, etc. Even if they are, I'm covered.

I'd love to see the lawsuit for firing an employee for buying something he is entitled to. That employee may have waited in line JUST like everyone else, why should he give it up?

It's really sad that Sony hasn't given Gamestop their final allotment numbers until today. Sony has had to know about how many units they'll have ready for weeks now. It just seems unprofessional.
And if the 200k rumor is true it's truly pathetic. 350k 360s was bad enough. 200k PS3s is abysmal.

My GS got their allocations cut to 60%, so roughly 2 units. 2 employees reserved a PS3, so that means the rest of us should get ours. Should.

Should.

I wonder what ebay prices will be now?

I just don't understand the whole camping out thing. Maybe for concert ticket to see a band but not for a game console....
I'd love to see the lawsuit for firing an employee for buying something he is entitled to. That employee may have waited in line JUST like everyone else, why should he give it up?
I agree, though no employees of the 4 that got in on the Wiiorder were waiting in line.
I'd love to see the lawsuit for firing an employee for buying something he is entitled to. That employee may have waited in line JUST like everyone else, why should he give it up?
Stores do reserve the right to sell their products to whoever they want and as an employee you do have to abide by company rules so I'm pretty sure the employee has no shot at winning that lawsuit. Well, there's always a chance but I just don't think it's a very good one unless you are suggesting that the employee waited in line with everyone else on his own time to preorder and didn't use his or her connections at the store but even then I'd say it would be a longshot at best.
I just don't understand the whole camping out thing. Maybe for concert ticket to see a band but not for a game console....
I wouldn't camp out but I understand it. I used to camp out for concert tickets back in high school but unless someone figures out how to bring Bonham back from the dead and turn back time 30 years there isn't a single band I'd wait in line for even an hour for.
I just don't understand the whole camping out thing. Maybe for concert ticket to see a band but not for a game console....
A concert lasts what, 4 hours? The PS3 will last ATLEAST 91 days.

I love how everyone is shitting on GS/EB for being conservative on PS3 pre-orders and act like they magically cut their numbers and will lose many potential sales on purpose. Laugh at Sony for being a big fucking moron douchebag company that doesn't know how to properly launch a system with such shitty numbers. For once I agree with VG and a few others that it isn't really the Mega Corps. fault. Blame it on Sony, not the register monkeys at the stores that are getting screwed too. Bitches.
I just don't understand the whole camping out thing. Maybe for concert ticket to see a band but not for a game console....
Camping for a console makes more sense to me than camping for a band. 2 hours (if you're lucky) enjoyment of a live band as opposed to years enjoyment from a console.

Kind of apples to oranges but as far as my money goes, console camping wins hands down.

This whole PS3 launch has been one messed up puppy. The consumers are actually losing more than a spot in line. Imagine how game companies feel. You have a market penetration of 200k US units..and you spent awhile on R&D for the PS3.

I have to agree that Sony is to blame but at the same time with GS/EB knowing how the xb360 quantity issue from last year..why not push sony for a definitive answer? It is costing them quite a bit of $.

KICK ASS!!!

I just got a call from Gamestop and they said I get a PS3 on Friday!!!

Store is opening at 8am for me to go get it!!

Cant wait :D

im number 3 at wherehouse music, and i am going to be extremely happy if i get that, but i am doubting it... time to break out the camp chair
