Hiroshima Mon Amour
I didn't particularly care for it. I liked the opening minutes, but then it basically lost me. The film never seemed to let me grasp it, to get a basic feeling of comprehension from it. It creates something of an impenetrable wall that doesn't allow you to tap into the essence of the film and, along with the film's slowness, creates an effect not unlike what I encountered in Woman in the Dunes of not allowing any of it to really stick with you. It's not a bad movie, but it really strikes me as a film that will require multiple viewings to allow me to have any kind of a grasp on the foundations of the film, which really frustrates me. I believe that repeat viewings should be used to enhance and clarify the basic understanding and enjoyment of a film, and shouldn't be necessary to simply establish those features. In that way, it reminds me of Mulholland Dr., and while I'll be giving that film another chance pretty soon, I have the feeling that I'll be watching this again someday too.
