I noticed we have a Favorite Games of 2009 Thread. Being a Super Bitch, this was not adequate for me. We must have a Worst Games Thread. Since I play almost all RPGs, my list will be pretty limited. I need CAG's help in posting their shitty experiences of games released in 2009. Also, please post your most disappointing game released this year as well, even if it wasn't that crappy.
Worst Games of 2009:
Winner:
Black Sigil (DS)
This RPG is so bad, it even surpasses Lunar DS as the worst RPG on the DS. I am not kidding. I even finished Lunar DS as a bet with Paco, and it actually gets somewhat more tolerable as it goes along.
Black Sigil was pretty much unbearable for me to play. The characters, battle system, level design, and encounter rate (worse than even the worst 8-bit games) are all atrocious. The only nugget of goodness that could have possibly saved it was the somewhat intriguing story, but it would have been like trying to find a piece of chocolate in a giant pile of shit to play it just for that. To top it all off the game has a ton of glitches and bugs. After losing over an hour's worth of progress due to a lack of save points and a glitch that froze the game for no reason at all, I stopped playing and traded it in. What a piece of shit. I don't care if it was done by a fledgling developer, there was really no excuse for the game's poor quality after years and years of development. It should have never been released. It still plays like a beta RPG Maker game. I have played much better freeware fanmade RPGs that had no such bugs or issues (Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden anyone?). Worst game of 2009 for me and worst RPG on the DS by far.
Runner-Up:
Nostalgia (DS)
This takes the cake as the 3rd worst RPG on DS, below Black Sigil and Lunar DS. I can't believe this game has been in the planning stages since the Sega Saturn era (according to the developers) and yet they came up with the biggest cliche ridden rip-off in RPG history. Even Legend of Dragoon was less shameless than this. Think of the game as a destitute man's Skies of Arcadia mixed with every lame RPG cliche in history and you have this game. The plot is a joke. I was predicting major plot points well before they happened. Everything else in the game is cliche as shit too. I had reasonably high expectations for this game, thinking they couldn't possibly
up a Skies rip off too badly, but they did. They really did. Shameful. The saddest thing is that I bought this game at launch, yet waited until good games that came out around the same time- Half-Minute Hero and Wizard of Oz- were Amazon DOTDs before buying them.
Honorable Mention:
Resident Evil 5
Total shit if you aren't playing on co-op. I didn't want to play online and I didn't want to pay $45 for a second controller for my fiance to play, so I decided to play it like I have every other
ing RE game (except for UC)- alone. The co-op play really disguises how much of a turd this game really is. It has the basic core gameplay of 4, but they took out every aspect of RE4 that made the game interesting and fun and replaced it with something nonsensical. The story and dialogue is a new series low; it's not campy and amusing, it's just a ripoff of B action movie schlock, much like Chris's new look. I guess this is what happens when a series' creator leaves. Mikami must have cried when he played this game.
Most Disappointing Games of 2009:
Winner:
Muramasa (Wii)
This game was hyped up so much, and yet it wasn't even as good as its sort-of predecessor, Odin Sphere. The problem is the game is way too repetitive and easy. Even the harder difficulty was way too easy for me (except for a select few bosses) and I admittedly suck ass at action games. The game was entertaining for the first couple hours, but then you just do the same thing over and over again the whole game. Due to the lack of difficulty, there is no need to ever mix things up or change your strategy of button-mashing except maybe on some bosses, of which there are few. The dialogue translation is an absolute joke and Ignition should be ashamed of themselves for being so lazy (and Nostalgia's translation was just as bad).
Runner-Up:
SMT: Devil Survivor (DS)
This game had so much potential, but several careless design choices ruined the fun. A huge percentage of the game's missions require you to escort and save completely helpless people. The main characters are devoid of any real personality and you can't sympathize with them at all. These and other issues combine to make this game a real disappointment. I hope Strange Journey is better.
Honorable Mention:
Suikoden Tierkreis (DS)
Okay, I think most people knew this game was gonna suck, but I was holding out a sliver of hope. Bad idea. One of the things that immediately pops out at you is how the main character's voice acting is obviously sped up to save memory space on the cart. The voices are horrible enough as it is, and so I played the game muted. The game is way, way too easy, and yet there is no way to eliminate encounters on the many, many times you will be backtracking through dungeons. There is no way to return to the beginning of a dungeon either. Just having an item or spell that lowered random encounters or returned you to the beginning of a dungeon would have made the game a lot more tolerable. The main characters are hard to relate to because they are devoid of personality (like Devil Survivor), and the story isn't that great either. Can we please get a real Suikoden VI that's actually made like someone still gives a shit about the series?
Ok people, now I need your opinions. You don't have to do any long writeups like I did, just post some shitty games that you played that came out in 2009.

Paco's part of the bet was merely to finish one story in Unlimited SaGa, and he never did. The bet was years ago too. What a pussy. SHAME ON HIM
