I've been diagnosed with testicular cancer
Hey folks,

Started chemo on Monday. Full week of infusions, all day. First two or three days I was okay. But it's getting harder. Constant low-level nausea (despite the fact that I'm on like 6-7 anti-nausea meds), feel really weak, got the shakes. Was having a problem with bad heartburn and, believe it or not, wicked hiccups, but got that under control with more meds. Also, I still seem to have an appetite, and my digestive tract seems to be working properly (severe constipation is often a problem side effect with the anti-nausea meds), so I'm thankful for that.

I'm more or less off for the next two weeks (just have to get a quick infusion on each of the following Mondays. Then it will be two more cycles like this. I'm fighting as hard as I can. Not gonna give up. Not going to whine. I'm thankful for this chance God has given me to get better, and I'm pouring every bit of my energy into it. Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming, especially for my wife, parents, and nurses, who have been saints keeping me as comfortable and cared for as possible.

Now to see if I can distract myself with some college football, which I've been focusing on all week. GO DAWGS!!!
UGA will trounce the Gamecocks today, no doubt. Once again, good luck man.

I had my gull bladder taken out this last feb. I know that that's nothing compared to your troubles. You'll more than likely just be knocked out, and wake up. If your in pain, and they offer you morphine take it it works great, but on a lighter note make sure your put out before they put the catheter up your penis lol. It sux believe me.

Thanks for keeping us up to date Tybee and hang in there. I'm settling in to watch the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game myself. It's funny that you update us today b/c I was just thinking to myself last night "It's been a little while since Tybee updated his thread I wonder how he's doing?" as I logged into the site.

Pulled it out. Every year I think we're going to trounce S.C., and every year it's a struggle. Oh well. A win's a win, especially in the SEC.

Up next, a long trip to Arizona State...Lord help us.

Doing okay, man. Somehow seems appropriate that Weiss took the hardest hit in that game. ;)

Thank God, I went in to get my testes checked - I had felt a lump - and it was epididymitis. I don't even have to go on antibiotics.

I came across this thread and read every single post. I hope everything worked out for you Tybee. I know this post is late, but my grandmother recently passed away from liver cancer and my mother has had two major scares with breast cancer- so I am completely surrounded by this sort of crisis. I wish you the best of luck, but after reading you blog- I am not sure you need it anymore- you beat it! Awesome news, and good luck in the future!

Thanks flame! Very flattered that someone checked this out a year after the fact. On the other hand, I'm very sorry to hear about so many of your loved ones afflicted with this shitty disease. My thoughts are with your family.

I suppose an update is in order: My most recent CT scan was at the beginning of October and it was still all clear. No change in my lymph nodes since immediately post chemo. That means no more CT scans (although if something turns up in my quarterly surveillance X-rays, they'll schedule one).

Lately the focus has been on trying to effectively "jump start" my remaining testicle to A) produce testosterone and B) with any luck, produce sperm. We found a new fertility specialist/urologist who recommended an unconventional treatment of Femara, an estrogen suppressant that is most commonly prescribed for breast cancer patients. Basically, this tricks my body into demanding more testosterone and subsequently my testicle into producing it. I've been on it for a couple months and at last check, my testosterone was several times higher than when I was actually using testosterone replacement (Androgel). So that's great news.

We will find out in the next two weeks whether it's helping on that second front. I'll say this: It's kind of awesome when your insurance pays for you to go into a little room and watch porn and everybody's really excited about it.

You want me to put a patch on my WHAT?

Congrats on the positive outcome thus far, Tybee!

I can see it now. Pressing the button for the nurse, and she's a 20-something former playmate in a nurse's outfit 2 size too small. At least that's how it would be if I were king.

I'm surprised insurance would cover that. I imagine without insurance you have to stand out by a dumpster with the Sears catalog.

OK, I just about laughed my remaining nut off.

What the fuck, for real?

Glad to hear you're cancer-free, man.

Man, I had a scare once with a lump, but it turned out to be a normal vesicle or something. But JESUS was I scared. My thoughts are with you and your wife, best of luck buddy.

Oh yeah. I've done the old squirt and squint four times now, and will probably have to do it several more times. Sometime -- likely when I'm drunk -- I'll tell ya how it goes down. It's amusing.
stoked to hear you're still kickng Tybee. I'm still waiting around up north.
Hey man. Been thinking about you. How are you and how's your mom?

Yeah, a varicocele. When they very first found my lump, that's what we hoped it was. No such luck. As your doctor probably told you, a varicocele can adversely affect your fertility, but it can usually be easily corrected with surgery.

I'm glad you're okay, but I felt like I had to post to comment on the awesomeness of NMH and to commend your avatar on being awesome as well.

actually my Mom is in the all clear. Had her operation come thru fine and she's pretty much back to normal. Me I'm still waiting on my OR date annoying but they got growth hormone inhibiting hormone in a needle so long as they give me a bit of that I can wait till whenever. That stuff is great man.
