Say hello to The Snake

26.jpg

From the it's about damned time files, the wrestling topic finally goes to Jake "The Snake" Roberts!

Jake was really one of a kind, from his in ring demeanor, to his off camera antics, to his on camera drunken rants, to his crazy python. While the British Bulldogs had Matilda and Koko B. Ware had his birds, no one in wrestling history had a pet quite as awesome, and quite as downright terrifying as Damien. Truly one of the great gimmicks in wrestling history.

Jake's DDT finisher was one of the best too, when he hit that baby, boy you knew it was over, un-tie the string and bring out Damien cuz this guy is done. What a great way to humble your opponents too, using the Snake after matches to add insult to injury.

Damien was also great for storyline purposes, it seemed as though every big guy in WWE was scared to death of Snakes, be it Yokozuna, Earthquake or Kamala.

I think my favorite memory of Jake though was all the tricks he played on the Ultimate Warrior, dragging him out to the graveyard to try and get him ready to face The Undertaker and then turning on Warrior at the last minute.

Few may recall Roberts' use of John 3:16; however, everyone knows what that eventually spawned when Stone Cold turned that into Austin 3:16.

Perhaps the most stunning thing though, about Robert's career in WWF, is he never held a single World Wrestling Federation title! Perhaps he was deemed to unreliable to carry a strap.

Oh sure, Jake had his faults, boy did he ever have his faults  ; Jake loved Sheik's medicine, and loved hitting the bottle, but there are few wrestlers who can claim to be able to cut a promo, have as unique a gimmick, wrestle a match with such great psychology, all while being as unforgettable as Jake Roberts.

\\:D/ And with that we've hit 50 wrestling topics. MADNESS! \\:D/

I wouldn't say that Angle's verbose, based on those quotes. Talkative, sure. Locquacious, if you wanna use a big word. But verbose? Nobody can top the Ultimate Warrior on that note.

What's the story w/ "Pigpen"?

That interview doesn't really show this "out of control and out of touch with reality" guy, the way people have been framing Angle recently. I just don't see it. Opinionated? Yep. Out of touch or loopy? Not necessarily. I really hope he's right about the direction of TNA Impact, although I'm not going to hold my breath.

On another note, I've decided TNA needs to cut their losses and fire VKM. They aren't wrestling, their act is irrelevant now that Triple H is on the shelf, and those two need to be humbled. Fire them and see them come crawling back when WWE laughs at their phone calls looking for work. Or, oh my god, they could come back as a tag team on ECW. That's punishment enough for ya!

Repeated from the end of last thread. Nice topic, and nice work on the OP, horse.

I was never a huge fan of Jake. Specifically, it always bothered me that Damien seemed drugged -- sluggish, immobile. Then again, maybe snakes are just that way. In general, I don't like using animals as props like that.

I think snakes are just that way.

I also never thought I'd live to see the day that somebody or something seemed drugged and immobile next to Jake Roberts!

I bet Macho Man wished the snakes was drugged.

And on his DVD they spend a good amount of time talking about how the snake would end up loose in hotels and the constant effort put out to find him.

That will happen to snakes when you forget the feed them.

This is a good thread choice, but why are they always WWE wrestlers?

It's not always WWE wrestlers.

We've had a Konnan :)roll:), Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Sting and Double J topics before.

Perhaps you're right. Even so, I always found it a bit laughable that opponents would freak out so badly about a snake that just sat on them like a blob. I mean, if the snake was wriggling around, starting to constrict, I could see it. But, as it was, it was like having a fire hose on top of you. A hose that was turned off.

I also always liked the way Roberts had to drag the snake around the guys body to feign movement. Are we sure the snake wasn't dead?

Man it is awesome to be able to switch back and forth between shows again!

It hurts that both shows are taped, but other than that...they should do this every week. Who cares if it hurts TNA, I demand satisfaction.

ok, first off, is jake dead? or is this just to celebrate jakes career?

ironically, this is the sketch that put jake on wrestlecrap.com. This "feud" got a crapload of airtime, every week jake would train warrior in the ways of the darkside, or heel or whatever, so he would be ready to face the taker. But warrior had a contract dispute and left. Or something.

The finale of that feud was of warrior getting bit by a "cobra" that looked like it came out of a cereal box. it was one of the worst feuds in wwf history.

What i remember most about jake was his appearance in the documentary "beyond the mat" which came out about ten years ago. Jake was supposed to be at an indy fed, but he said he would not show up unless someone brought him some crack cocaine. Oh man. Jake was a real piece of work, even for a pro wrestler.

Jake is still alive. In fact there is a "where are they now" article about him on WWE's website.

Edit: LMAO Steiner was like don't fucking touch me when Christian put his hand on Steiner's shoulder. This heel faction could be great.

I hate to say it, but Impact has been on par or better than Raw so far. Not that either show is amazing, but Raw just seems really predictable so far.
WHAT!?!?!?

Well I've got the one after him then!
I'm tired of telling people - I'm doing the one before Wrestlemania. Fin.

all of those wrestlers were in wwe or wwf at one point, except for sting.

I think my most memorable jake the snake moment was of him breaking up savage and elizabeths "wedding", either that or his feud with rick rude. or maybe the way he always smacked his opponent on the back so his opponent would know it was time to sell the ddt.

BTW this forum really needs a ravishing rick rude thread, if it hasnt already had one.he was one of the all time greats imo.

it just doesnt seem right that jake out lives elizabeth, hennig, bam bam, tenta(earthquake) and whoever else has died recently.

Jake has more mileage on him than anyone. OH i just remembered his estranged daughter from beyond the mat. It should come as no surprise whatsoever that jake was the worlds shittiest father.
Ugh, that is the absolute last diva I wanted to see in Playboy.
I don't even remotely agree with that, but then again NONE of the women in WWE are anyone I'd be breaking down the door of the bookstore to see when the issue came out. Maria's ok but I'm not getting a semi by seeing her name in print or whatever. Torrie was one, but when they finally put her in there they airbrushed her so much it didn't even look like her - and now she's getting a bit old.

After seeing Ashley's previous nekkid photos, I was not exactly blown away. I think I'm just desensitized to porn thanks to the internet.

I guess Raw started early tonight. I started watching at 9.

Man, that was like 10 minutes worth of entrances. I don't know if that's the smartest thing to do with competition on another station.

HOLY CRAP.

WSX Episode pulled from MTV - future questionable?
In the midst of major shakeups within the network's executive end, MTV has pulled the fourth episode of MTV Wrestling Society X from next week's scheduled airing at 10:30 PM.

While the actual yanking of the episode was due to an issue with the MTV's standards and practices department, sources claim that the network is also trying to change their strategy moving forward, both with WSX and other first-run programming. A program titled "Scarred" will run next Tuesday in WSX's usual timeslot.

The pulled WSX episode was slated to feature the debut of IWA Puerto Rico star Ricky Banderas, during an angle where he would throw a fireball into WSX champion Vampiro's face. MTV initially approved the storyline and stunt when it was filmed during WSX's taping in Los Angeles. Once the network received and reviewed the episode, however, the decision was made to not allow it to air due to concerns over viewers possibly recreating the stunt. Since the fireball angle was one of the company's main storylines for the length of their episodes, the situation went back and forth within the network and has yet to be resolved, so the episode was pulled.

In a January interview with PWInsider.com, Wrestling Society X producer Kevin Klinerock discussed MTV's issues with producing a product that would feature violent stunts, commenting, "The biggest issue that standard and practices, and everyone at MTV has - and it's understandable. The concern is, 'How easy is it for some kid, some viewer, to replicate what they are seeing?' They don't want us swinging light tubes. Understood. An exploding casket, however, is not seen in the same light on the same scale of sheer violence of swinging a light tube; a kid's not going to be able to get an exploding casket in their backyard. That's their concern. It doesn't come from a sake of wanting or not wanting something to be seen on television, they have real series concerns. They've lived through a number of lawsuits from kids watching and imitating "Jacka**" and similar things, and it's just their set of standards that the entire network lives by. It doesn't matter if it's a wrestling show or "The Real World." It's just a standard of rules that everyone has to live by. "The standard [MTV uses] is how easy is it for someone to replicate it. That's what we have to look at when it comes to stunts and violence. It's not a whitewash WCW using cotton candy as weapons by any stretch of the imagination. It's definitely got your mix of extreme and your mix of entertaining in-ring high flying action. We give a little bit of each in each episode, the extreme violence and the excellent high flying technical in-ring wrestling. I think we accomplish that. Most episodes were laid out that way."

Additionally, MTV as a network is in a major state of flux at the moment with ratings for their original programming (including their top series, Two-A-Days) down across the board. In response, parent company Viacom has let go of over 250 employees in the last several days including several high ranking executives, with some given two week notices and other departments being completely shut down.

Among those fired, according to today's edition of entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter was Paul DeBenedittis, who held the position of Executive Vice President of "multiplatform programming, content strategy and scheduling at MTV", was among those fired. DeBendittis was responsible for MTV's programming decisions, including placing WSX up against WWE's ECW on Sci Fi.

Sources claim the network is re-evaluating the programming currently airing on the network. Its possible that moving forward, WSX may be moved to another timeslot to get it away from the competition of ECW.

When asked whether the series was in danger of being canceled after garnering just a 0.5 rating this week with its third episode, WSX sources noted MTV had already paid for the production of the 10 filmed episodes and that it wouldn't make sense for the network to not air what they had already invested in.

As of now, those sources indicate that Wrestling Society X is scheduled to return on Tuesday 2/27 at 10:30 PM, although that could conceivably change as things evolve from the standards and practices end.

Please don't kill this already. WSXtra is the best weekly wrestling show available right now.
Well that was Russo-fied.
What was? I really dug Impact tonight, even though I don't need to be beat over the head with all the lousy character development. The Gauntlet match was well booked, although the commercial breaks helped kill the momentum. I don't think Impact needs to change a great deal, but they do need to have a main event about as long as the gauntlet was tonight each week, and to sparingly use the screwjob finish - it loses importance, and it's just cheap. Now that you have Rhino and Steiner, and once Killings is healed, you have three guys who can "main event" an Impact match and do the job without any harm to any guys in the company. Hell, main event an x-division match.

It's also interesting to note the presence of TNA's "parody" of Dick Johnson in the Paparazzi video - that guy's been off of tv for months now, making TNA no longer a parody, but the perpetrators of bad taste in programming. Nevertheless, Jay Lethal's Macho Man was awesome. Ron Killing's segment could have stayed on the cutting room floor, along with the "Adrenaline Rush" video recap. I'm not a fuckin' idiot, it's unnecessary.

Bob Backlund is gonna wrestle next week? Yikes. I like that they setup next week's show in advance. I want to watch (though I couldn't care about that Sopranos guy).

Who was the dude rolling out that skinny-ass Konnan? I completely forget his name.

Steiner's promo was great tonight. Sure, he probably never beat Cena or Batista, and we know he never beat HHH. However, he came across as believably arrogant, and went for the jugular against Angle, talking about his wife. Them's fightin' words in the real world, and the overall setup (you coming to TNA fucked over me and my negotiations) made a great deal of sense. Kudos to that. I hope Steiner does as well as he did in his prior TNA stint.

WSX, ah, we hardly knew you. Oh well, you pretty much sucked anyway, so no harm, no foul. Ironic that the station that brought you "Jackass" and all those other "Ow, My Balls!" quality programs didn't think WSX was appropriate. You can taste that irony.

Raw really booked a show tonight to challenge TNA. Piper at 9PM? Overbooked superstar main event? Ashley's titty? That's overall impressive, but I watched TNA instead.
Unfortunately, I know fuck all about torrents.
Allow me to recommend uTorrent for a client and PWT or XWT as trackers (I guess I can't tell you the URLs, it's possibly against the site rules, but just Google them) also I would try wikipedia to get acquainted with the protocol.

Well.. TNA improved this week, slightly but hey... like they say in NA, you gotta do it one day at a time. Lethal vs. Starr in a Macho Man impersonation contest, book it!

Time for Phrosties Random Fact of the month: Did you all know Jimmy Jacobs holds a win over Eddie Guerrero? It's true... it's damn true.

I missed when they said that the last person eliminated was going to have to be pinned and to me it seemed like a Russo finish when I saw it (my friend corrected me later and said that Don West explained that it was going to occur, but the Christian promo seemed to allude to both Tomko and Steiner exiting the ring at the same time so that he would not have to fight them making me think that the over the top rope theme would continue until the end).

I will say that I did enjoy impact tonight for the most part. The inclusion of more wrestling was deinately a nice touch considering the lack of wrestling the show has had lately, and maybe Angle was correct when he stated that they are going to start giving the fans more wrestling (I sure hope so).
We demand more Phrosties Random Facts. :D
Dude wtf I said "of the month" I'll be sure to have something good some time in the future... but give it time young padawan!

Btw, Raven crucified Sandman and it's funny cuz Raven is Jewish! I guess most of you already knew that though. But here's something you didn't. In Jewish law, if your mother is Jewish, you are considered a Jew no matter what. Well my mother's mother is Jewish, but her father isn't... so in my mind she's 1/2. My father is 100% Jewish. But my whole family (except my weirdo sister) are atheists! We're atheist Jews... isn't that strange?

What would be hilarious is if "Scarred" was actually "Unscarred: The Nick Mondo Story".

Looks like we'll never see the Pirahna Death Match WSX taped for later in the season.

I'm not even a Super Crazy fan, but I love that shirt.

Bad news for me, though... I'm not going to be able to attend No Way Out on Sunday as I had planned. :(:(:(:(
