Jake "The Snake" Roberts wrestling topic

Definitely give him one, and I don't think he sold out - he couldn't make money in ECW, so he went to a company where he could. Sure, he left ECW in horrible fashion, but Heyman seemed to forgive him for it - he did put him over Tanaka at ONS '05 after all. I certainly wasn't expecting to read about him passing away anytime soon, and it seemed like he had a good life after retiring from pro wrestling, so I'm really surprised it was suicide. Hopefully the Observer bio that'll certainly be done on him will shed some light on this matter.

Here's the full story from Meltzer that's already been ripped off a bunch today -
Mike Alfonso, better known as Mike Awesome, was found dead on Saturday evening in the Tampa area according to those close to the family. He was 42.

Friends were coming to his home in Tampa to pick him up and go out Saturday night at about 10:30 p.m. and he never answered the door and found him hanging in the home. It is believed the death was due to suicide pending results of the autopsy.

Mike Awesome was one of the top foreign stars in FMW in Japan, who as a high-flying big man was made ECW champion on two occasions in 1999 and 2000. As champion, he signed with WCW, creating a situation that many feel ended up killing the title as Tazz from WWF was brought back to ECW to win the title, yet at the same time the title was jobbed in WWF.

He worked for a few months with WWF after the collapse of WCW, as well as with All Japan, but had not wrestled in some time. He was working as a realtor at Coldwell Banker at the time of his death.

Brother Ray had this to say about his passing on the Death Valley Driver Review Board -
've called and called his cell, his house and no answer. It sucks that another one of my brothers has died. The endless cycle never seems to stop. I have a hard time shedding a tear this time. If the suicide rumors are true, I hope he is rotting in hell right now. There is no more selfish thing you can do, to kill yourself where your family and friends will surely find you. You want to die? Fine, drive out in the woods and hang yourself there where the buzzards will dispose of you. Don't be a selfish cocksucker and do it where you'll be found by loved ones.

So, next question, do we go with the precedent set in the APA topic, temporarily close this one, do the Mike Awesome one, then finish this.

OR

Finish this one and go to the Mike Awesome?

I'm in favor of going with whatever the majority wants to do.

Also, I think someone else (Scorch?) should do the Mike Awesome topic. I saw some of his matches in ECW & WCW, but I really didn't follow him that closely. I don't think I'd do the best write-up.
that's the same story that's been posted here three times, Jay.

He deserves a memorial topic
Sorry about that, I just checked the last page when I logged into the board. I think we should what we did with the Bigelow/APA thread - it seemed to work fine.
Seriously.

Talk about selfishness.
I can understand if he feels hurt by this personally, but to publicly air this, in the way he did, shows that he is one grade-A piece of trash. You simply don't denigrate the dead in this manner, and certainly not this soon. It's simply one of the most common social norms imaginable.
fuck Bubba Ray. What a class act.
Seriously the sooner Bubba Ray dies the better. When that motherfucker goes I hope he has a public funeral, so I can go and bring balloons and shit and celebrate that that fat piece of shit is gone. I'm sure his family shares my feelings.

Happy in life, happy with his new career..

I'm willing to bet this has to do with his wife, either cheating on him or wanting a divorce. It had to be something huge. The man had kids. The only thing that I can think of is that the wife was going to leave him and taking the kids away as well.

Non-Mike Awesome news, but still interesting news:

Vince McMahon was irate backstage at No Way Out last night over the fact that JBL had to call half of the matches on his own. Anyone who watched the PPV saw that Micheal Cole was losing his voice throughout the show, and by the time the main-event started, he refused to speak. JBL was apparently very frustrated at having to call the biggest match of the night on his own, and McMahon shared his concerns. Despite trying to get Cole to at least try and call the main-event, producers backstage could not get him to say more than a few words. Cole left the arena without notifying anyone, and many feel his days in the WWE are numbered.

Cole is already in hot water over the "Mr. McMahon and his Ass" cartoon on WWE.com, something that he produced without the approval of McMahon. With Wrestlemania 23 only 6 weeks away, don't expect Cole to be fired any time soon. The general feeling is that he will stay with the company until after Wrestlemania, or until they can find a replacement for him.

Finlay is expected to have a big match at Wrestlemania, and a possible World Title run later this year. McMahon is very high on Finlay's work rate and feels that he could carry the company. Batista is still set to drop the title to Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and the tentative plan is for a 'Taker vs. Finlay match at Judgement Day.

PWInsider's Elite Area

While Taker winning the title would be great news, Finlay picking it up after makes no sense at all. The guy is what, 60 years old? If you want to keep giving old WCW guys the title, why not put it back around Benoit? He's far more qualified and respected by the majority of the fans than Finlay.

On a side note, Cole getting fired would be hilarious.

Funny thing is, if Cole called the match with a haggard voice, Dick Mahon would have been up in arms, either way.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't really. I'm actually fairly surprised Mr. McMahon didn't like the kiss my ass cartoons, as they aren't any more ridiculous than the actual in-ring segments

I'm not a huge fan of Michael Cole though. I think he's barely passable as an announcer, as he often doesn't know the name of moves, and spouts off utter-nonsense from time to time.

I beleve Jay's weekly post of Michael Cole excerpts is enough evidence.

If I had to choose between listening to Michael Cole or Don West ONLY on a wrestling show... I'd ask if there is an option for the mute button.

I'll just say that JBL did a fucking awesome job last night during the main event. I'd love to see him go solo like that more often. :D

Oh, and RIP Mike Awesome.

I definately say close this topic and start an Mike Awesome memorial thread ASAP. And I fully agree on Scorch doing it.

I didn't like Don West at first, but I'm actually starting to enjoy his work. He seems genuinely exited about the matches, which I admire. Of course, he says some stupid shit, here and there... but he's actually improved over the years -- calls a good mix of moves, observations and story-telling; compliments Tenay quite well, in my opinion.

Cole, on the other hand... just corny.

I know that's all self-presentation for the market and whathaveyou, but he looks and seems very happy and self-assured on that page.

I vaguely recall him being very depressed with the way WWE treated him after the Invasion (possibly during). I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he had been diagnosed with some sort of depressive disorder, though I don't care to speculate on what sort of life circumstances led him to do this.

Very true Brak. He has improved quite a bit since I started watching TNA back in early 2003. He still is a bit annoying and needs to tone down the screaming a bit still. I wish TNA would leave Cornette at the booth alongside Tenay and West. Cornette really does make the play by play a LOT more enjoyable.

QFT. Since well... that is the truth.

Am I the the only one here that thinks that Vickie's gonna be the new GM of Smackdown? That's the most logical direction this storyline of hers can go in after the past few months, IMO.

This is assuming, of course, that other people are watching Smackdown. If you aren't, you should.
This is assuming, of course, that other people are watching Smackdown. If you aren't, you should.
I will second that. Smackdown has been pretty damn good for the most part since the point when Boo.... I mean King Booker won the belt. There are some things that they can drop from Smackdown all together (the diva crap for instance) but I guess we have to take the bad alongside the good.

Are you saying King Booker is your boo?
BOOOOOOOOOOO! Another Wrestlemania where the IC title isn't defended.

fuck Umaga.
Maybe the IC belt will be on the line too.
Maybe the IC belt will be on the line too.
Somehow I really doubt it, but we'll see.

Umaga as champ= good. Jeff Hardy losing= good.

I love me some Edge, but I hope he loses tonight because (1) RVD would be a great fit for MITB, again, and (2) Edge can't afford to lose his Mania undefeated streak.
RVD vs. Edge?

This should be one hell of a job.
I would think at first RVD is going to job to Edge, but I'd rather see the Edge vs Orton match at WM instead.

Suicide is indeed the coward's way out, but I do feel bad for the guy's family so I don't think I'll be calling him a "cocksucker" or whatever on the same day he died. Sheesh.

The focus on Vince-Trump over everything else on Wrestlemania is quickly turning me off on the show.

Oh CHRIST, fucking Mick Foley is back to shill his latest product, and he's doing the Bischoff "WHUH OH, PEOPLE AREN'T GOING TO BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS!" What's the matter Foley? Finally realize that you're not a best-selling author based on talent, but because of the popularity of wrestling as a whole? Why not do another "Tietam Brown?"

Even if RVD gets to win tonight there's no way he'll win at Wrestlemania with him being on his way out the door. Maybe Vince wants to really stick it to him and is gonna make him job at Wrestlemania?
Suicide is indeed the coward's way out
I never met anyone who said that who has any real experience in dealing with depression or have had a suicide occur close to them. That's just the cliche' callous asshole thing to say.

I've never met anyone who sympathized with someone who committed suicide who wasn't a coward.

Assumptions.
Assumptions.
A good companion of the overgeneralizations you make. At least pretend like you have a sliver of compassion for a moment.

Back to wrestling, I can't get into Carlito's finisher. It's unique, sure, and I complained for months that he didn't have one (and that he won every damn match by rollup instead, as if Russo was booking WWE in spirit); now that he has the "backcracker," I'm kinda wishing he'd start rolling people up again. It's unique to him, but doesn't look very painful and it's pretty uninspired.

Personally, I'd like to see someone use the "Rude Awakening" again.

EDIT: homophone problems. Egads.
I second the Rude Awakening love, and I wouldn't mind Roode using it - it'd be better than his current finisher of being pinned all the time.
Yeah it would be a great fit for Roode IMO.
